Cash for Clunker Appliances: Georgia gets $8.6 mill in rebate program

Consider it Cash for Clunkers, part 2. This time, the clunker consumers can discard of in place of an upgraded, energy-efficient model applies to appliances.

Georgia has received $8.6 million in federal stimulus money as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The funds will go toward purchases for Energy Star refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers and other select household appliances. The program launches Feb. 12.

However, it isn’t as easy as walking into your local appliance store and getting cash knocked off your final total. This is a first come, first-serve rebate program, so those who make purchases must follow the guidelines to ensure benefits ranging from $25 to $199. Here’s how it works:

– Before you go to the store, make sure funds are still available by logging onto Georgiarebate.com or by calling 1-866-296-1633. Available rebate funds are updated automatically as applications are received.

– Purchase an Energy Star appliance in person. The Energy Star logo will be visible on the packaging and/or product. For a complete list of appliances, go to to Georgiarebate.com. Online purchases are ineligible. Purchases made before Feb. 12 are ineligible.

–Apply for the rebate online. You will need the receipt from your purchase to complete the application. Print the application confirmation reserving your rebate and mail it with the sales receipt within 30 days of your online application. If you phone in your application, you’ll receive a confirmation page by mail, and then have to mail it in with the sales receipt within 30 days. You’ll then receive a Visa prepaid debit card with the rebate value.

– Georgia residents may apply for one rebate per category, per address, up to $1,200. That means you can purchase a washer and a dishwasher, for instance, but not two washers or two dishwashers. Keep in mind, though, that separate applications must be completed for each appliance.

– Finally, remember to make arrangements to have your old appliance recycled or donated.

Some of the available appliances include: dishwashers, air conditioners, tankless gas water heaters, solar water heaters and gas furnaces. For a complete list of appliances, go to Georgiarebate.com.

I hate anything to do with Cash4Clunkers. Here we are pushing new cars into a market already saturated with countless used and repossessed cars (i.e. repofinder.com). Now new cars depreciate faster, more Americans are in debt, and more repossessions are on the horizon.

Where did this appliance cash4clunkers debacle come from? What a waste of taxpayers money. How more irresponsible can the presidential coconut become. Well he best enjoy himself as his re-election odds are dwindling by the day.

The only good part is many people will yet again refuse to read the fine print, not qualify for reimbursement and make the 6:00 news whining and crying…I guess that will be the only entertainment I receive from yet another of the kenyans ill-conceived notions.

Perfect timing for me. I need a new washer/dryer, dishwasher an refrigerator, I’m using my original ones and they’re, like, 20 years old.. At least it’s a rebate on something that I can – and will use

I love the idea. I need a new washer right now. The president is looking towards our future. Everything can’t continue to be old and failing like the policitians in DC.

We all should want to have energy efficent applicances. Who doesn’t want to save money on their electric bill? Geez people!

I wonder what interest rate we’ll owe the Chinese on the money we borrowed from them to buy their appliances. I also wonder how many people will bite on this deal and borrow money they can’t afford to repay. Since when did it become a constitutional function of government to ensure our appliance and shiny and new?

What a horrible idea! We shouldn’t help get the economy going by boosting sales of new appliances and cars AND helping purchasers save money on utility bills. This is so crazy. We should just not do anything and let the geniuses who kicked us off the cliff pull us up with two spools of dental floss. /facepalm

I refuse to take money away from my future grand-children by participating in this program. However, I will go buy a energy efficient dishwasher, two air conditioner units, and a tank-less gas water at Home Depot. I can count on receiving money back on my investment this way.

I’ve been waiting for this program to come into action since it was announced last year. People, this isn’t a new rebate program, if you read deeply into the stimulus bill, you would have seen this on the horizon. I’ve been holding off buying appliances waiting for this. Yayyy! I hope the stores also run sales simultaneously!

FYI: Dryers are not included in the rebate program. I’m told there have been few energy efficiency advancements in dryers in recent years and replacing your old one for that purpose isn’t necessary. Therefore, there are no rebates connected to purchase of dryers.

OK, Why is it these people are suddenly concerned about the national debt now, but did not say a word about it when the previous administration was BLOWING money on the Iraq war (which we should never have been in), or giving out $300 and $600 checks to practically every American citizen because we had a brief surplus (from the Clinton Administration). Bush turned a surplus into a deficit, but that was OK.

Now, Obama either has to do something to stimulate the economy or watch it collapse. So he chose to at least get something out of it by via green incentives, infrastruvcture improvements, etc., but HE’S the BAD one??????

Give me a freakin break!!!!!

The reason MOST Americans do not support this program is simple. It will NOT help create JOBS in America. It, like the Cash For Clunkers will show a temporary bump in Americans spending money but over 60% of that money ends up in a China, Korea and Japan. Another reason is, it’s ALL our money (If you PAID TAXES) going to those that didn’t pay a dime. It’s simple Socialism! But do not fret, Mass just showed us all what’s coming this November to a ballot box near you.

Well thank you, Rana, for reminding us of this. If I can find an efficient water heater that will save me enough money each month so that it will eventually pay for itself, then I’ll seriously consider it.

The gasoline savings on my hybrid vehicle has MORE than made up for the premium I paid over buying a regular model. For me, the break even point was about 2 1/2 years. Since then, all my savings at the pump has been money in the bank.

I’ve had a similar experience with switching out all my regular light bulbs with compact fluorescents several years ago. The savings on my electric bill have paid for the bulbs many times over. Tax savings and energy bill savings… Makes sense to this accountant.

I’ll apologize in advance in case the tone of my comment isn’t hateful enough to get posted here… I’m just trying to offer up some common sense to balance out the mindless rhetoric from people who insist on politicizing every little thing.

I purchased an energy efficient washer and dryer almost 2 years ago. It was before the clunker money was vogue. I can say the money saved on my electric and water bill is almost invisible. The special detergent is double in price. I’m now going to pay more in taxes for every yahoo who decides that the government subsidizing their purchases is a good idea. Wake up America! If you happen to be a lucky American with a job and a paycheck you will hate this current adminstration in about 13 months…that is ticking time bomb for all the tax increases to pay cars, appliances, healthcare, green jobs, etc.

Another point that really bothers me is getting the “rebate” in the form of a Visa gift card — that will more than likely have an expiration date and most people will not use up every penny on the card. Then, the purchaser will probably have to pay taxes on the “rebate”, just like the people who participated in cash4clunkers. How about using the $8.6 million to open up satellite job banks where private sector jobs are promoted? Until the unemployment situation improves, any so-called stimulus is a farce.

KC

January 21st, 2010
6:04 pm

Actually dawgmom Democrats in congress championed for and passed legislation that prevents expiration and penalties on gift cards such as the Visa gift card used for the rebates. Now, I don’t like the idea of the Visa card either. But I suppose the genesis of this would be the hope that it would be used for further retail purchases. I approve of the idea, but the execution could be better.

Have a great day everyone.

Great point dawgmom.. You buy an expensive new energy efficient appliance for this great rebate, and then rather than getting a discount on the purchase, they give you a gift card; you dont get cash back for your gift card, you HAVE to go spend this money by a certain date (typically 1 year) or you are charged penalties. This is a horrible idea, people will not fully understand what they are doing before they make these purchases and will have to deal with the consequences.

Hopefully there is a clause of some sort that encourages the purchase of AMERICAN made appliances, that might make me feel a bit better about it.
