Veterans Day specials and free admissions at area attractions: Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Imagine It! and more

Veterans Day specials

The tragic event that took place this week at the Fort Hood military base in Texas has brought into the forefront the tremendous service of men and women in the armed services. Veterans, active military personnel and reservists will be honored throughout the week as part of the Nov. 11 Veterans Day holiday.

Several attractions in Atlanta have extended discounts to these men and women.

The Georgia Aquarium is offering $20 tickets to active, retired, veteran and reserve military personnel and their families Nov. 7 through Nov. 15. Plus, they will get a 10 percent discount in the gift shop. You have to show a military identification.

The World of Coca-Cola is free for active and retired military personnel Nov. 7-14, and 50 percent off for up to four family members or friends.

Imagine It! Children’s Museum is free for active and retired military personnel from Nov. 7-15, and tickets are discounted to $9.50 for an additional friend or family member.

The CNN Studio Tour will offer free admission to active duty service members, reserves, national guard, veterans and retired veterans Nov. 7-15. Their guests will receive admission for $10 each.

The National Museum of Patriotism is also free to all active and retired military personnel, while all their guests will get 50 percent off admission.

Also on Saturday, Nov. 7, Pemberton Park Place will host U.S. Armed Forces Celebration Day. The activity is free from noon-4 p.m. and will take place between the World of Coca-Cola museum and the Georgia Aquarium.

Priscilla The Pink Pig

If your child has always wanted to write a letter to Santa, he or she should get busy. If children bring a letter to Santa at the Believe Station Nov. 6-7, they’ll get a bracelet which will be their ticket to ride Priscillia The Pink Pig for free. The Pig will be at Macy’s Lenox Square from Nov. 7 through Jan. 3, 2010.

It’s refreshing to know that those of us who are NOT active duty, NOT retired, and NOT reservists, seem to be perpetually left out of the roll call. Many of us served during Viet-Nam, and it’s disgusting that the discriminatory attitude toward veterans of an unpopular war are still being treated as second-class veterans. Discounts and freebies for everyone but us – the forgotten (and often ignored) veterans who gave just as much as those in Iraq, Afghanistan, or any other conflict. Very sad – thank you for remembering us for our service – NOT.

lawdog…bring your DD214…..do you really think any of these places would deny you?

I didn’t retire out of the navy, just got out. I do this all the time.

Allen – I’ve got my VA health card – think that would work ?

My point is that they would even make the statement about “active duty, retired, or reservist” – it’s VETERAN’S Day – not active duty or reservist day. While I respect those currently serving this country, they are not VETERANS yet. Reservists are no less honorable than full-time active duty, but THEY are not VETERANS yet. The issue is the “freebies and discounts” should be for ALL Military or ALL Veterans or a combination of ALL – the statement specifically excludes non-active duty, non-reservist, non-retired VETERANS.

I agree completely LawDog. I know you served during Vietnam, but I gave alot of blood, sweat, and tears during my time in the Army for the eight years I served (mostly in the 1st Cav as an infantryman). I got out and am in law enforcement and am glad that veterans are appreciated as they are today. It seemed like Americans had forgotten about all of the sacrifices before 9/11. I hate that there had to be more sacifice for those that have gone before to be remembered.

While I am not asking specifically to be remembered as that my time in service was largely uneventful as compared to others, I just hope others can be remembered and appreciated as well as their families for all of their sacrifices so the younger generation can learn that life is a gift, freedom isn’t free- instead it is earned, if not by military service, then by pulling your own weight in the workforce and working hard to make our country the best it can be.

Lawdog, how can you sit there and say that those who have not ETS’d yet aren’t veterans. I’m currently serving in Afghanistan, and already did a tour in Iraq several years ago. My buddies all fought hard, and some didn’t come home, but we still did our jobs as infantrymen. And you’re going to tell me that I’m not a veteran? Certain people think that you are a veteran simply because you get out of the military, and others believe that you have to have seen action, well, what would you say to the senior NCOs and officers that have been in multiple conflicts over the years and still have not retired? Are they not veterans in your eyes? Are you going to tell me that I’m not a veteran until I ETS in 6 months? Be sure to point me out when you see me, so that I can go out of my way to make sure you’re comforted, because I’m apparently not up to your par even though I’ve been in 2 wars.

Happy Veterans Day to ALL military men and women, current and past. I’m grateful for your service. I hope you’ll take advantage of some of the discounts and freebies available in honor of your service.

Thanks, James for the reminder. Applebees, Krispy Kreme, Outback and Golden Corral are among the restaurants with freebies

OIF Vet – my definition of a Veteran is taken from the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs. I realize you are a veteran of 2 wars, as you say, and I respect that service and sacrifice that you’ve made for all of us. My intent was to show that the distinction between “active duty” and “veteran” was being overlooked.

Never would I disrespect you by not giving you the recognition you deserve. This is a matter of semantics and definition. You are not considered by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs as a Veteran of military service until you have ETS’d. Yes, by other definitions, you are indeed a Veteran, but you are a Veteran of conflicts. Please don’t confuse the two, and also, please don’t take this personally.

What about families? I am an Army wife, and haven’t seen my husband since May. I don’t get to take myself and my three children to a nice dinner because Daddy’s not here to flash _his_ ID? It’s exactly _because_ Daddy’s working hard and not here that Mommy could use a night that she doesn’t have to cook or clean up. None of the sites I’ve looked at mention families at all. Am I wrong to want a little something in honor of the sacrifices I and my children have made?
