DIY: 10 steps to a successful home paint job

Good point, Dixie. If you decide to use the “oops” paint, just make sure they have enough of the color you’ll need. Once it’s gone, there may be little you can do to replicate the color.

A few things:
The blue tape is useless. The green frog tape available at Lowes works perfect.
Primer is over-rated. If you use primer, then you are painting the room twice. If you skip primer, most likely it will work. If it doesn't, then you paint a 2nd coat which is what you would do if you used primer anyway.
Paint the trim first and then paint the walls. When painting the trim, don't worry about taping it off. When you paint the walls, tape off the trim after it dries and any trim color that got on the wall before will be easily covered. Taking the tape off sheetrock can sometimes peel off the outer layer. There won't be any issues with taking the tape off the molding. It sounds strange but this does work better.

Thanks for this tip Rana! I painted my entire home myself and saved $1500. Painting is really not hard to do yourself, and given the economy its the best way to go.

Be sure to check out the "oops" section at Home Depot and Wal-Mart for already mixed paint. Maybe a shade or two different from one you picked out, but usually way cheaper than the one off the shelf!
