NFL Madden 10 hits the shelves at 12:01 a.m., sending gamers into blitz mode as they rush retailers in hopes of getting their hands on the game while it’s still hot.
And this year, the game’s developers have taken it to another level, outfitting Madden 10 for a reportedly more sociable and interactive experience for the Wii platform.
Gamers will plop down $59.99 to get the new release for PlayStation3 and XBox360. As we know, though, first and frugal don’t always meet nose-to-nose. Wait a minute, in this case, and you stand to save a lot of hard-earned cash.
Two days ago, I went to half.com and saw NFL Madden 2004 — with No. 7 Michael Vick on the cover — for 97 cents. A browse through the same site today delivered these gems, among countless others:
NFL Madden ‘09 — $9.49
NFL Madden ‘08 — 75 cents
Is it golf you prefer? How about this? Tiger Woods 2010 is $33.43 on the site; the 2006 version is 75 cents.
If you’re someone who has to have the best, and have it first, then this note isn’t for you — unless you have an open mind. But, if you’re patient and a savvy spender, you’ll heed these tips for getting the best value on video games. Game Crazy, the second-largest video retailer in the nation, including many locations in metro Atlanta, has some suggestions:
1. Buy used. Used game purchases have increased 16 percent since the beginning of 2009, according to a recent Nielsen report.
Note: Before you buy a used game, ask to try it out in-store to make sure it’s in good condition. If you’re buying it as a gift, make sure the store has a good return policy that will allow you to bring back games in poor condition.
2. Out with the Old. If you’re nostalgic — Do you still have an ’80s Atari game stored somewhere in the basement? — don’t sell the old game. But if you’re just looking for the next charge, you can use the money from your sell to help you buy a newer game you may be more interested in.
Note: You’ll get more if you trade in your used games quickly. Now, you may want to hold onto it for a while, but if it’s no longer challenging or entertaining — or you haven’t even looked at it in months — go ahead and sell it to maximize your return.
3. Know your product. Some games hold their value longer than others. Sports games and kids’ games with popular cartoon characters drop in value pretty quickly. Others, like role-playing games, driving and flying simulation games, and top-tier action games hold their value the longest, according to Game Crazy.
4. Here’s a non-Game Crazy tip. Rent the video games. You can rent video games for a few nights, or even a week, if you can’t afford to purchase them. Pay less than $10 a month for rentals at GameFly.
5. Free Downloads. On some systems, you can download for a free demos of new games. It’s generally only about 20 minutes long, but it’s a good way to try out a new game for free and have fun in the process.
Top 10 Games Trading at More than $20 as of July 28 (All games; information provided by Game Crazy):
1. UFC 2009 Undisputed
2. Call of Duty-Wold at War
3. Prototype
4. Fallout 3
5. Resident Evil 5
6. Fight Night Round 4
7. Infamous
8. Killzone 2
9. Red Faction 3: Guerilla
10. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Sports Illustrated is running a deal now where you get Madden 10 for free if you sign up for a subscription, which is only $49. https://subs.timeinc.net/SI/si_madden09.jhtml?experience_id=240532&source_id
And Rana, work on your subject lines, and stop trying so hard to rope people in with something so misleading… If your getting Madden 10 this week you’re paying full price, and this blog isn’t going to help you.

I refuse to pay over $40 for any game. I’ve had pretty good success with Game Stop (and Movie Stop for DVDs) In general it is MUCH cheaper to wait till something has been out for awhile. There is nothing really gained by being an early adopter.

Hi Basketballjones,
My hope is that if you’re thinking about getting the game this week, you might read the blog and reconsider. Or at least give it a little more thought, even if you end up moving forward anyway.
And I like that SI deal. I’m a big SI fan, and have been a subscriber for years. Not a bad way to get two products — a hot game and great mag — for a nice price.

great tip about games holding value and some games dropping in price
there is a playstation 3 role playing game called folklore that still sells for 60$ and it was one of the first games out on ps3, been out for years. call of duty modern warfare has held up value overtime as well.

I like your suggestions, but the problem with comparing Madden 10 with your finds for ‘09 and ‘08 is that they are outdated. Waiting the amount of time it would take to get 10 for $9.49 will require you to forego purchasing 10 in place of purchasing 11.
I see your point, but it probably applies more to cars than sports video games where rosters and things can change a lot over the course of 1 year.

He will be on there later like how they did Brett Favre last year. Give them time to update his stats.
Also, if you dont want to pay full price on Madden trade in your older Madden game. That will at least take off the taxes if not more. I do it every year and save a little bit.

FYI, the Tiger Woods ‘10 you referenced at half.com is for PS2, not PS3.

Just stopped by half.com again; that Tiger Woods 2010 for PS2 is now $29.37. I’ve noticed that prices drop on that site all the time, and inventory — not surprisingly — moves quickly on the popular games.
Has anyone played Madden yet? How is it?

This blog is beyond retarded. The reason people want Madden 10 is for updated rosters or improvements. If they wanted Madden 08 they would have it already. Perhaps next you’ll suggest people that want to dine out should check the dumpster behind the restaurant first? AJC should be embarrassed to have you on the payroll.

Believe it or not, Joe, not everyone can afford to pay $59 for the game. Or they don’t want to. If you like the game experience, but don’t have the money, it doesn’t make you a loser to wait a bit before purchasing it. Or you can save some on the front end by selling your old games, which is also suggested in the blog. If you enjoy playing the game, waiting to get it in a few months isn’t exactly like eating garbage, now is it?
