Free ASO tickets | 1/2 off ballet | 1/2 off Toby Keith and Creed | Much more

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is giving away 4,000 tickets to its last concert of the season at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta.

Four free tickets and a parking pass are available to Fulton County residents with valid identification for the Aug. 15 performance. The tickets can be picked up at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre box office or the Woodruff Arts Center box office.

AJC.com’s Arts and Culture blog reports this show will mark the U.S. debut of 16-year-old guest conductor Ilyich Rivas. Featured pieces include Verdi’s “Vespri” Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, performed by Elena Urioste. The performance will conclude with a fireworks display.

$10 off Dora the Explorer Live

In my house, Diego is slightly more popular than Dora. Nevertheless, Dora can generate some excitement, as she does for lots of children. To see her up close, go see Dora the Explorer Live: Search for the City of Lost Toys. The show is Aug. 21 through Aug. 23 at the Fox Theatre. A special Nordstrom discount offer allows you to get $10 off when you purchase your tickets online using promo code “Toys” to get the deal. The fees through Ticketmaster are about $7 each, so if you can purchase them at the box office using the same code, you’d certainly save more money. Also, there are tickets available for $8 through Ticketmaster.

Something old, something new

Still trying to squeeze into your favorite jeans even though you’ve, shall we say, outgrown them? Now is the time to trade up, and trade in at the same time. Through August, Barneys Co-op will allow you to trade in your gently used or “previously loved” blue jeans in exchange for a 20 percent discount on a pair on new ones.

LiveNation.com

No fee Wednesdays is in effect today at LiveNation.com and for the first time includes not only amphitheatres, but includes more than 1,500 shows in theaters and clubs. In Atlanta, the ‘no fee’ applies to eight upcoming shows at the Tabernacle, including Mos Def on Aug. 14 and Chickenfoot on Aug. 30.

There may be a better deal, though, in the buy one, get one free ticket offer for shows at Lakewood Amphitheatre. You’re paying for just one ticket, and it does include the service fees. Participating shows are Crue Fest 2 on Aug. 29, Depeche Mode on Sept. 1, Creed on Sept. 11, and Toby Keith with Trace Adkins on Sept. 17. The half-off and the no service fee tickets can be purchased only on Wednesday, Aug. 5, during the 24-hour period. For the full menu of half-off shows and no service fee shows, click here.

I wish the Habitat for Humanity Store in Coweta County was also hosting the plant sale.

And I also wish the free ASO tickets were being offered on a first come, first served basis, rather than just to Fulton County residents.

Uhhh… Fulton County taxpayers support the ASO through the Fulton County Arts Council (FCAC) .

First come first served wouldn’t be entirely fair since Fulton County tax dollars are what actually pay for programs like this.

“The mission of the Fulton County Arts Council (FCAC) is to enhance the quality of life of all citizens through support of the arts.

The FCAC assists the Fulton County Commission in the development of public policy on public support for the arts industry, makes recommendations to Fulton County Commissioners on funding the arts and generally oversees the development and implementation of publicly assisted programs that address the diverse cultural needs of Fulton County’s citizenry.

Fulton County and the Fulton County Arts Council are dedicated to the arts for the passion they inspire, the quality of life they afford us, and the economic impact they make.”

This is one of the many reasons I love living in Fulton County…
