5 ways to stay in shape without paying for it

The Peachtree Road Race is finished. That doesn’t mean it’s time to put the brakes on physical fitness. Neither does it mean shelling out big money to stay in shape. Exercise doesn’t have to be a big expense. Here are five ways to stay fit for cheap:

1. Keep running: Like Forrest Gump, you’ve gone this far, why stop now? Some people might consider an iPod an essential component for a running regimen, but it doesn’t have to be. Try a natural soundtrack: the sound of birds chirping and squirrels scrambling up trees your my footsteps approach.

2. Play with the kids: As a kid, you probably used to climb trees in the yard, play kick ball and race your siblings and friends down the road. Ah, the good ‘ole days. Imagine doing all of those things and more – like tag football and dodge ball — with your kids today? You’d have fun, bond with your children and stay in shape in the process.

3. Go off the deep end. Well, not literally. Many people opt for swimming over running because it’s less pounding on the knees. And here in Atlanta, there’s another reason: to stay cool. Swimming is a great aerobic workout. The Piedmont Park Aquatic Center is an affordable option, but there are several other places in the area where you can dive right in.

4. Take a hike. There are lots of challenging trails around the area that will test your physical endurance and mental toughness. All you need is some water and a good attitude. Check out these trails, which you can visit for just $3 on average.

5. Down and dirty. I’m not much of a yard-worker. I contend it’s mainly because I think it’s too hard. All that bending and kneeling, pulling and yanking. Whew. Wears me out, and reminds me a lot of, well, exercise. This is a way to break a good sweat and work your muscles. The end result – on your yard, that is – makes it worth it, I’m sure.

I do yard work, but the neighborhood I live in, like most built in the last 20 years has no sidewalks. Walking in the street means taking your life into your hands. That is when it’s not toooooooooo hottttttttttttt

Cycling is where it’s at. I just can’t seem to find the time to do it the way I enjoy it, which is for 45 minutes or more at a time. Easy on the joints, which is an issue for me. Faster than running, too, so I don’t get so bored. Can be dangerous at times, though, especially with the way folks drive.

I do my share of yard work, too, and have spent a lot of time in recent months finishing construction of a lake house in N. Ga. No question that activity has kept me in better shape than if I had not been so busy.
