Atlanta Symphony plans three free summer concerts at Piedmont Park

BY HOWARD POUSNER / AJC

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has announced that it will return to Piedmont Park for three free summer concerts. The “Performance on the Promenade” concert series — 7:30 p.m. June 12, 19 and 26 — will be presented on the Promenade at Piedmont Park.

The first concert will be led by guest conductor Gemma New and feature Xavier Foley, a former member of the ASO’s Talent Development Program, performing Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2.

New ASO Assistant Conductor Joseph Young will lead the second concert, to include Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien and the Overture to Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

Young also conducts the final concert, “An American Salute.” It will include selections from Copland’s Rodeo, the Overture to Gershwin’s Crazy Girl, the second movement of Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony, Sousa’s Washington Post March and John Williams’ Superman March.

General admission seating is free, but reservations required. Tickets for the June 12 performance will be available online June 6, for June 19 on June 13 and for June 26 on June 20. Details: aso.org/piedmontpark.
