Theater of the Stars cancels third show, ‘Anything Goes’

Attempting to raise $1 million in an emergency fund-raising drive by Aug. 30, Theater of the Stars on Friday cancelled “Anything Goes,” which was to have run Aug. 20-25 at the Fox Theatre.

It’s the third show of its 2013-14 season TOTS has cancelled. On Wednesday, the 61-year-old troupe cancelled “Dreamgirls,” as it had done with the season opener, “Buddy.”

That same day the Fox terminated TOTS’ lease but said it would work with the company to rebook shows as space allowed.

In a statement Friday, TOTS said it was continuing to fund-raise and “working very hard” to save the reminder of its season: “The Little Mermaid,” “Stomp” and “Cats.”

In late June, TOTS announced that it needed to raise $500,000 by July 12 and another half-million by Aug. 30 or that it would be forced to shut its doors.

The company is operating with a $650,000 debt, but officials said the bigger issue was that it needed cash to launch the season. (Donations can be made via 404-252-8960, www.theaterofthestars.com.)
