Art of abolition at AUC’s Woodruff Library
The Atlanta University Center’s Robert W. Woodruff Library has opened the exhibition “Jacob Lawrence and the Legend of John Brown” through Oct. 31.
The exhibit puts into an art historical context Lawrence’s 1941 series “The Legend of John Brown,” a suite of 22 silkscreens (represented in digital images here) inspired by abolitionist Brown’s historic raid on Harpers Ferry, Va., in 1859 that many historians believe led to secession and the Civil War.
The display panels provide a descriptive overview of Lawrence’s life and work as well as of Brown’s life and involvement in the struggle to end slavery in the United States. Complementing the display are Brown publications and correspondence.
The exhibit is open to the public but it’s best to call ahead to check library hours (subject to change because of midterms): 404-978-2052. Tours of the exhibit are available; contact email@example.com or call 404-978-2067. The AUC Woodruff Library is located at 111 James P. Brawley Drive S.W., Atlanta.
