Culture notes: High honors Houston curator; Avery Brooks bringing ‘Robeson’ to Ga. Shakespeare

High honors scholar

The High Museum of Art has named Valerie Cassel Oliver, senior curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, as the 2011 recipient of the David C. Driskell Prize. The honor recognizes a scholar or artist in the beginning or middle of his career whose work makes a significant contribution to the African-American art or art history field. Oliver “represents the new generation of innovation and influence in the field of African diaspora and African-American art,” High director Michael E. Shapiro said. “Her work as a curator, writer and lecturer qualifies her as an important voice in this group “ The seventh Driskell Prize recipient will be honored at a dinner in Atlanta on April 16.
