Diana DeGarmo nabs regular role on ‘The Young and the Restless’

CREDIT: Her Facebook fan page

Diana DeGarmo, fresh off a year-long starring role on the national tour of “9 to 5,” has found a potentially longer gig as a regular cast member of the top soap opera around, CBS’s “The Young and the Restless.”

Sure, soaps are a dying breed but this one has been No. 1 for years and is guaranteed on CBS through at least 2013. So if viewers like her character, Diana could have a long-term gig.

TV Guide broke the news and DeGarmo confirmed it yesterday in a Tweet.  They say she is going to play Angelina, the daughter of a Jersey mob boss. So after working a Dolly Parton accent for “9 to 5,” she’ll now be honing her Jersey lilt. Boning up on “Jersey Shore” reruns should help!

It seems like every few months Diana lands a new job. First theatre and now the top rated daytime drama. She’s proving slow and steady wins the race.

I’d estimate Diana is one of the top 5 or 6 former Idols – she’s creating quite a career (and a stunning resume) for herself. Girl can do anything. First saw her sing when she was a single-digit age at the GA Music Hall of Fame show years ago. She was the “new Brenda Lee” back then, with a truly powerful voice. Far as I’m concerned, once LaToya London was off, she should have won the Idol title!

Congrats to Diana. She is definitely one of our hardest working non-winners.

She’s going to have an uphill battle with diehard soap fans, who are already in meltdown mode all across the internet, over an American Idol star on THEIR precious soap. Are soaps really that sacred or are soap fans just as nutty as American Idol fans??

She’s arguably the most successful non-winner.

I’m not young but often I am restless. May have to watch this soap to see what the fuss is about this DeGarmo girl. She sure is a cutie…but is she talented? Hmm…..

While this is not intended as a diss at all toward Ms. DeGarmo, may I ask what is the criteria for being the “most successful Idol non-winner”? I honestly don’t know the answer, because its not clear in terms of CDs sold, most internet hits or whatever. If that’s the case, then where would a non-winner like Jennifer Hudson fall? Can’t wait to see her in Genoa City!!

@Rickster I’m a big Diana fan, but I can’t agree with you on her being the most successful non-winner. That title belongs to Jennifer Hudson. That being said, I love them both.

Sam-A, I can go you one better! I’ve been watching Diana since her kindergarten days at Annistown Elementary School (Gwinnett) where my wife organized the PTA talent shows during the ’90’s. I have a tape of her first show, singing the theme from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”.

We were channel-surfing one night back then and stopped at “The Nashville Network” during an Opry broadcast, and there she was, being introduced by one of the old stars!

I don’t think Diana can objectively be called the MOST successful non-winner but she IS successful and has shown much more longevity than other former AIers. She’s just out there quietly plugging away, and always employed in one great project or another. I could see her doing a short Y&R stint and then returning to Broadway.

So, with JHud and Diana we apparently have two enormously successful Idol non-winners(”success” having different definitions for both women) and they are from season 3 which has to be one of my least favorite seasons. Hmmmmm.

I think this proves that you do not have to win the contest be be successful in life. This show has given many talented people the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. On the other hand, there are some winners we hardly hear from.

If you want to talk about money made, Kelly and Carrie are way ahead of anyone else. And since Idol was a singing contest, record sales and Grammys would be the biggies, and again, Kelly and Carrie. JH has an Oscar, but is not a big money maker. Probably her Weight Watchers gig pays her far more than anything else she’s ever done.

Diana has a very diverse career, and while probably not making the really big bucks, she’s most likely considered in the top 10 at the very least in success of former Idol contestants.

Interesting, approximate numbers from Wikipedia:

Jennifer Hudson = 1.23 million album sales between two albums
Daughtry = 6.102 million album sales between two albums
Diana = 168,000 album sales

To be fair, and for comparision:

Fantasia = 2.78 million album sales between three albums

I think what people mean is that Diana is one of the numbered past-Idol contestants who’ve had to work their own way up the ladder and have done so successfully. Her career in theater may have been jumpstarted on the Idol premise but she has really taken every opportunity and made the best of it. She is well respected in the theater community, by fans and peers, and most of all, she’s managed to lead a good, normal life and is morphing into a fine, young lady. I wish her the best and hope she finds a lot of success.

It is more likely that Diana has not had plastic surgery and instead has just lost a lot of weight. I wish her the best on the soap since many are getting canceled!

Plastic surgery? Diana looks different because she’s 24, brunette, and much thinner. Her nose, eyes, and lips haven’t changed at all. LOL

I hope Y&R is a great experience for her but that show has some true divas who don’t make life easy for newbies. If Diana is prepared for the “4 Witches” aka Michelle Stafford, Jess Walton, Sharon Case, and Eric Braeden, she might be ok.

American Idol Auditions we’d love to have heard: Mick Jagger (You Can’t Always Get What You Want)

Old Judges:

Randy: “Dawg, I’m not sure I love the whole “chicken dance” vibe, and the vocals were a little pitchy. For me, it was just a’right.”

Paula:”Jagger? Do you have any Jaggermeister?”

Simon“I can’t always get what I want…. but I’d settle for a really good singer – which you aren’t.”

New Judges:

Randy: “Dude… I love the whole British Invasion thing. The vocals were a little rough in spots, but I definitely wanna party with you.”

J-Lo: The singing was okay… but the dancing left a lot to be desired. I definitely didn’t get “goosies” from that.”

On AGT tonight, PopLyfe appeared a poor version of our local High School Jazz Band, so the choices are a uniformed dancing light show, interpretive shadow Silloutte dancing or a replay of 50’s Rat Pack songs.

If one of the bigger groups wins, I wonder how much in-fighting there will be over how the million is split-up.

While the dancers are good at what they do, it would get a little old watching an hour of it in Vegas. Either AGT is not getting enough bonafide talent with wide appeal, or the Judges are very poor at getting real talent into the public eye. Mandell especially, wants to push/cast cheesy acts from the auditions to get on the air, rather than serious talent.

Oh well, maybe the X-Factor will be more entertaining – doesn’t that start soon?

Good morning, gang!

Seth T., I couldn’t agree more regarding many of the acts put through on AGT! I think the judges and producers often forget what the final outcome is supposed to be. Not just a $1,000,000 contract but one that purports to include a Las Vegas show!

Who is going to pay to see a dance group or a silhouette performance for 60-90 minutes? Or a high dive belly-flopper, or a male pole dancer, or a bunch of people in over-sized head costumes, etc., etc., etc.!!!

While there have been some good acts discovered, overall it looks like the producer’s idea of AGT is as a larger version of The Gong Show!

And, back on topic, congratulations to Diana. She has certainly been able to keep busy in the entertainment business.

Kind of an interesting discussion about who the most successful non-winner is. If we rank it on music success alone, then Daughtry is the hands down #1 so far (as JT showed).

And, of course, we ALL know who the LEAST successful WINNER is…

I watched AGT for the first time in weeks last night thinking at least the top 4 ought to have some talent. Not so much.
