GQ psychoanalyzes Simon Cowell

AP photo of Simon Cowell

AP photo of Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell is an odd man, GQ magazine decides in a very GQ-ish profile.

Sure, he prides himself for his mainstream tastes which may be why he’s so successful. And as we all know, he was really bored by “Idol” in its final years but he was financially obligated to pocket the tens of millions “Idol” was paying him to be Simon, the judge. But the writer has more fun picking apart Cowell’s habits. And it’s a good read, perhaps just as good as a vitamin drip!

- He has the same breakfast every day. “Hot water with lemon. Then papaya juice with lime. (”Tastes delicious, looks great,” he rhapsodizes. “It looks fantastic when it’s brought in in the morning. It’s just the best-looking thing in the world.”) Then oatmeal. Then tea. Then three different smoothies—a spinach smoothie,11 an antioxidant smoothie,22 and a super smoothie with seven fruits.”

- He watches old-school cartoons such as “The Flintstones” and “The Jetsons” in the morning, not the news.

- He is supposed a health nut who smokes and won’t stop.

- As if this somehow compensates for all the nasty stuff in his lungs from the smoking: “Each week, Cowell has an intravenous drip with B12, magnesium, vitamin C, and, he says, ’something for your liver.’ “

He’s very anal, but at least he loves dogs, which is my top priority in liking anyone

What? Did they make this up, an intravenous drip? So Simon is a nutter, who knew.

If Rodney ever gets an interview I insist that he asks if Simon has a colon cleansing regimen.

“it looks fantastic when it’s brought in in the morning” is the line I remember…wish I had someone who would bring me breakfast (and lunch and dinner and afternoon tea) every day.

I agree Mercedes, and to get that person to make three silly smoothies is an added bonus.

Morning!

Aw thanks, JT.

Ya know, if we all had Simon’s money, we might all end up having someone bring us breakfast in the morning….except for the spinach smoothie, of course, I can’t see many of us wanting a spinach smoothie. And the intravenous drip…..really? I agree with Woodpappy’s Michael Jackson comparison.

We had a great time out in the wilderness(or what passes for a wilderness these days) The Adirondacks were delightfully cool and pleasant, no bugs, Mercedes, black flies are usually gone by mid-August. Sleeping with the window open, riding a ski lift to the top of a mountain for the amazing views, hiking through the woods next to a mountain stream with waterfalls(and bells on our backpacks to warn the bears). Then back to civilization and a wonderful dinner with the man who introduced hubby and me. We haven’t seen him or his partner in nearly 25 years so there was a lot of catching up to do. We asked them if they would get married now that it’s legal in New York but they said, after 30 years together they really didn’t see the point.

Good times!

Morning, and welcome home, D! Missed you.

And, D, you and I agree about Simon. I said “ick factor” and you said “ewwww.” ;) He certainly has had no trouble adopting all the trappings of wealth and is now working hard on the eccentricities.

Simon didn’t create much activity around here. Wonder how it bodes for his “X Factor”? Hmmmm.

Sad to see Steve Jobs’ health issues forcing him to bow out of Apple – not a good sign for his health issues. Smart man.

Sam, I don’t think we “know” Simon anymore. He’s been off the tv, as well as our radar screen too long. For me it is almost like “whatever.”

I think Simon will be back on our radar in Sept. X Factor is getting a lot of publicity but I haven’t heard much “buzz” about it. If Simon doesn’t show Paula any more respect than he did on Idol(deserved or not) then I’m afraid I’ll have to dvr the show and fast forward through his adolescent gropings.

Hi y’all!

Spinach, um, no. I mean come on, we all know kale is much better. I do find his “health” regimen a tad hilarious considering he is a smoker, but to each their own.

I’m sure I’ll check out X Factor, but I still don’t see what the hoopla is about.

Sad about Steve Jobs…wonder how this will impact Apple. I saw that after the announcement, shares were down 5% in after hours trading.

My son was wondering what the ripple effect of the Jobs retirement would have on the Silicon Valley. He IS Apple but he’s been very smart about finding the best possible people to carry on. I think the stock might be down for awhile but it is an extremely strong company with or without Jobs. My best wishes go out to him and his family. He fought the good fight against his cancer and the word in the valley is that the battle is over.

Jon Caramanica who covers AI for the NYT, writes in todays paper about the post-career of Idols and Voices. He wasn’t too impressed with Scotty at a performance in Uniondale, N.Y. “… he looked bored…When Mr,. McCreery finally emerged about two hours into the night, he chuckled a bit during the pening lines of Josh Turner’s ‘Your Man’, the song that he sang ad nauseam during the auditions and that trails him like a lonely puppy. But it was during a duet of ‘When You Say Nothing at All” with the runner-ip Lauren Alaina that Mr. NcCreery’s mind appeared to be elsewhere. maybe it was – just half an hour earlier, while his comrades wefre sweating it out onstage, he was watching Vince Gill videos on YouTube, ‘Simple incredible’, he wrote on Twitter.”

Well.

Scotty… meet Lee. A few months from now you two can get together and swap stories about when you were kings of the world.

Deirdre

If you’ve ever done a show where you don’t appear on stage until after the intermission you’ll understand that boredom is very hard to shake off. Sitting doing nothing while everyone else is singing and dancing and interacting with the audience is hard. It takes a lot of experience to build up your energy after that much down time.

Scotty is 17……experience is not his friend yet.

Harriett

He’s young and should be so excited he’d explode onto the stage after the wait. I can see that from seasoned performers and know this can be the case, D, but a youngster who has been given the opportunity of a lifetime? Uh uh. Lauren is the oen who seems excited to be there. Every. Single. Time.

Harriett

And, you go, Haley! The article was especially complimentary of her performance.

Deirdre

But Lauren gets on stage during the first half. I’ve had experience with kids in this area and getting them on track after sitting in a green room for over an hour twiddling their thumbs(or in this case tweeting their whatevers) is very hard. Scotty has never been a ball of fire on stage and sitting around bored sure hasn’t helped him any. At some point(if he still has anything remotely resembling a career) he’ll figure out how to dial it up 10 notches. For some, like Lauren, it just comes naturally. For others, it’s a learning process.

Deirdre

I wanted Haley to win when it was just Haley, Lauren and Scotty left. I think she’s a much more interesting performer than either Scotty or Lauren. She is also a much more seasoned performer than the 2 kids…obviously coming from a performing family gives her an edge.

Of course, the fact that the person bringing it in is a gorgeous brunette in a “French Maid” outfit has nothing to do with how good it looks.

Sam-A

I think Scotty is too immature and maybe too much of a “country mama’s baby boy” for all this. Doubt he’ll ever prove to be dynamic on a stage – he sure never showed a spark of it on Idol. Still cannot figure out how the devil that sweet, lightly (very) talented young boy ever won the whole enchilada!

D., did you see any bears while roaming around the great Northeast?

I remember the amusing “National Forest” sign regarding bears:
“All hikers should carry small bells attached to their clothing to alert the bears and pepper spray to ward them off. Also, be on the lookout for Black Bear and Grizzly Bear ’scat” (droppings) and know the difference. Black Bear droppings are usually golf ball sized and contain remnants of berries. Grizzly droppings are larger and usually contain small bells and smell like pepper spray!”
