Crystal Bowersox does OneTouch diabetes ads with B.B. King

As a fellow Type 1 diabetic, I was thrilled to see season 9 runner-up Crystal Bowersox get an endorsement deal with OneTouch, which manufactures blood test strips. She is in a series of ads with fellow diabetic and blues master B.B. King. I happened upon one of the commercials during Sunday night’s “Glee Project” on Oxygen. Bowersox must have been thrilled to work with such a legend.

Morning!

I saw the first ad while I was in CA. She did a good job. She’s a pretty girl and very talented.

How will Neg handle this? First all the Haley pictures and now a Crystal thread.

Happy for Crystal. For a guitar player, that’s pretty high cotton! Best of luck to her.

Jerry Lewis? When was the last time he was relevant? Meh.

Crystal is doing a great job of keeping herself in the public eye with endorsements, causes and touring. She also just bought a home in Nashville, and will be relocating there shortly to begin laying the groundwork on her next album. She’s getting herself connected with all the right music people to continue advancing her career to the next level, and the future looks very bright for her.

Here’s a live video of one of her new songs that’s slated to be on her next album:

I think I will submit an idea to American Idol for a “filler” show to take up time between season 11 and 12.

We’ll call it “American Idol: 2nd Chance @ The Crown”. The concept is that all 10 second-place finishers return to duel it out for another try at being an Idol. No auditions, just live shows each week and one person eliminated each time. No judge’ save; in fact who cares if they judges are even there?

Now I know that folks like Crystal, Adam, and Clay don’t NEED it, but heck it could be fun. Now, who would I root for? ? ? ? ? ;-)

JTesla

Rickster hit the nail on the head in the Fantasia thread: basically hits = $. If a racially charged issue generates more hits, AJC will highlight it for the money. The argument could be made that lots of hits means lots of interest and the AJC is giving the people what they want. It only follows that giving people what they want makes them money.

So is it bad to give the people what they want? If profiting off giving people what they want is bad, then Apple is evil incarnate.

Nutmeg

JT, I think that responsible journalism and capitalism (i.e., “give the people what they want”) are inversely interrelated, meaning that they do tend to be in tension but aren’t in perfect opposition.

There are four models I can describe of journalism funding: for-profit, state-sponsored, not-for-profit, and “free” or citizen journalism.

For-profit journalism dominates the US. State-sponsored journalism we have rejected. Non-profit journalism (where the proceeds go back into the enterprise, where it’s supported by donations/charities/foundations) is rarer but present. Citizen journalism is made much easier by the Web; people post their images and thoughts about local events without expecting money in return.

Each has upsides and downsides.

Citizen journalists can only highlight what they see, which isn’t everything, and they don’t have the time/energy to put in hours of legwork.

State-sponsored journalism too easily turns into propaganda.

For-profit journalism reinforces the worst parts of our society and, if something isn’t interesting, it doesn’t get highlighted. Far more has been reported, for instance, about the personalities surrounding the debt crisis than what has led us here, which is a bit of a dry story. If it’s dry and complicated, for-profit journalism doesn’t really want to go there. There’s no money in it.

Non-profit journalism is my favorite, but it does tend to have an ideological bend. The thing is, so does capitalist journalism: the ideology is that of the corporation and profit-seeking engine. I don’t like that ideology, so I’m not a fan.

All that to say: yes, Fantasia hits = money, as do comments, and yes, that’s terrible for a functioning democracy. Such is what I attempt (usually in vain) to get through to my media writing students.

JTesla

August 2nd, 2011
6:20 pm

Very enlightening points Nutmeg.

“that’s terrible for a functioning democracy”

I would argue that it is democracy that is terrible and for-profit journalism simply showcases one aspect of how it can go wrong. Hence the need, in my mind, to reinforce our republican form of government.

At the moment, imo, journalism, whether for profit or non-profit, thrives on keeping readers in a state of fear or agitation. Shark attacks, healthcare, the debt ceiling, medicare, social security…if we worry enough, we’ll keep reading.

Mercedes S.

SOME journalism thrives on keeping readers in a state of fear or agitation… others thrive even more by giving us celebrity muck… to ward off the fear and agitation, I suppose. Newsweek, which used to carry well-researched news articles, turned into an opinion magazine (that’s when I cancelled my 25 year subscription) and now it’s like one of those British red-tops… gossip and sensations.

Mercedes–the last act of AGT tonight is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

Nutmeg, I think that just means you have great taste in nail polish. Or you secretly want to form a girl group?

As far as journalism, take everything with a grain of salt and do some research on your own. News have been dumbed down in favor of the sound bite or snippy quote. Newsweek lost me with the tabloid trashiness I saw regarding what Princess Diana would look like now if she were alive. I mean, really?

Sam-A, thanks for the welcome back! As far as I know, there’s talk of a single coming in the next month or so. Album was scheduled for September, but I’m thinking that’ll be delayed.

In the midst of the latest round of leaks, she’s gone to record some stuff with JillandKate (her back up singers). I believe most of the material is a bit more singer/songerwriter type stuff. Like the originals she sang during the All I Ever Wanted pre-shows. If you want to get an idea of the sound, I suggest youtube. Most of them are still available there. Seth T

August 3rd, 2011
3:28 pm

I think part of the problem with AGT is Howie and Sharon. Howie pushes for slapstick stupid, or juvenile stuff and Sharon is more into her own abstact thoughts and reactions than actually evaluating talent.

That’s why so many silly or so-what acts are still on the show, as seen last night. With all their auditions, there has to be better acts and talent than some of those acts put through by this crew. And most of them won’t be seen on any of the clips shown in the beginning of the show.

Some of the acts have been so bad that they have tried to provide dancers and props to make the act look more entertaining, but still boring and a promoter/booking agent in Las Vegas would not touch it.

After tonight’s elimination, things will at least get better, since Howie and Sharon’s opinion won’t mean anything except for the one save.

Harriett

August 3rd, 2011

Howie makes annoying Piers his number one project, to the point of tedium. It definitely takes away from the show.

Sam-A

August 3rd, 2011

Glad I don’t watch that (mostly) Gong Show retread! The few moments I’ve seen of it, most of the acts are fit for street corners. I do admit that little girl last year was amazing, but how much sword-swallowing, rope swinging, inane “dancing” and “singing” would anyone, especially paying Las Vegas prices, want to be subjected to!
