James Durbin talks about his family, metal music, Lady Gaga

AP photo

AP photo

Here’s my interview from Tuesday with James Durbin, the rocker who came in fourth.

We discussed his family, his love for metal and a beef he has with Lady Gaga. And he is enjoying the lack of pressure on tour, not that he didn’t consider “Idol” that pressure packed.

“I didn’t take it as pressure on the show,” he said. “I took it a week at a time. I used everything I could to my advantage. Acted wild and made new friends.”

He also implies he has things cooking for an album though it appears he has to stay mum until he is off the tour and freed of any contractual ties with 19 Entertainment.

Just talking to him, I could tell what a fun dude he can be. That mischievous grin of his says everything, eh?

As the video above shows, Durbin also had a beef with Gaga beyond her grabbing his butt. He believes her current hit song “Edge of Glory” rips off a portion of Kiss’s song “Sure Know Something.”

And since he brought it up, here’s Kiss song “Sure Know Something.”

And Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory.”

You be the judge on that one.

Durbin compared it to the Lady Antebellum “Need You Now” closeness to Alan Parsons Project’s “Eye in the Sky.”

Could be “first”, but I got nothing to say I didn’t say in the last thread!

Thanks for another “Idol” interview, Rodney. For some reason the videos always take awhile to work for me; must be my outdated hp or something. Will check it out later when it appears.

James changed my mind about him as the season went on and now I really root for him to have success.

Thanks Rodney! I really liked James a lot and would have been very happy if he had won. I think his voice is fantastic and with a little training, he’ll be a really great singer.

James… ditch the knit cap. No self-respecting metal denizen wears one of those. (But then again… it does cover up his hair… which has always looked weird to me.)

And LOVE Clarence Clemons in the Lady Gaga video.

Good to hear from James and it’s nice that he has an album coming out. However, he “believes her current hit song ‘Edge of Glory’ rips off a portion of Kiss’s song ‘Sure Know Something’”??? Does James somehow own the rights to ‘Sure Know Something’? Is he a representative of KISS? If not, STFU! Hey James, your style of rock is not doing so hot right now, it’s probably best not to burn a bunch of bridges.

JT, you can tell James is still “young in the business”. He needs to be careful steping on toes. Hope he didn’t just pick this to have something to talk about. I really liked the guy on IDOL. He is a fine entertainer. Hope he does well after the tour is over.

I agree Woodpappy. Hopefully he gets smacked around by Lady Gaga fans and learns from it. Sounds like he still has time to hone his interview skills prior to when his album drops.

I love james-& everyone has to calm down-this is still America & he can have an opinion he loves talking music & hes right it does sound pretty simular but who cares shes not God. He’s in the entertainment business hes not running for President-half the entertainers you probably wouldn’t like if you met them.I choose to listen to his music not judge him by an interview. You go james!

deber: You are the one who needs to calm down/ All the guys said is James’ stepping on toes of really famous/popular stars will not be taken kindly and could cause him a great deal of animosity in his career. We the regular blogsters don’t really give a flying fig – liked him ok on the show and wish him well, but if he flops, who’ll care or even remember him in a couple years. (Case in point, we all have to think awhile to remember the name of Lee DeWyze!)

Thnaks Rodney! James was my favorite this season… but he needs to appreciate his highpowered fans and see it as a compliment when they slap his butt!”From previous thread, THANKS Deirdre, for sharing those clips of Helen and Cilla!!
And to Sam-A, My fave GatP song was “Ferry Cross the Mersey”. Also liked “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” and “How Do You Do (What You Do to Me)”.

Of the other “invaders”, I liked the Searchers, esp. “Don’t THrow Your Love Away”; Billy J. Kramer, the Hollies (”Bus Stop”, “Look Through Any Window”), The Zombies, and of course Peter and Gordon (”I Go to Pieces”, “A World Without Love”, “True Love Ways”).

I’d say something here but I’d probably just be called a bully again. ;-)

Sam, I forgot to thank you for the Gerry and the Pacemakers video. Loved their music, too!

I think you guys are right about James needing to step a little more carefully during interviews. No sense in pissing off the rich and powerful in the business until he’s rich and powerful, too. Then, if he wants to make Elton John’s opinions look mild…I say, go for it!

James is entitled to make a comment…& he did complement her, but he is right IMO… GAGA does rip off alot of other artist’s music especially Madonna…Many of her songs have elements of older songs mixed in…Lady GAGA always says to speak the truth…I’m sure she can take negative comments..& she is not God or untouchable…& like James said maybe she cleared it with KISS…

“GAGA does rip off alot of other artist’s music”

And those artists ripped off other artists. There is nothing new in this world. Except maybe to the group that needs to say James is entitled to make a comment. I don’t recall saying “James is not entitled to make a comment” I’m just saying that his comments regarding Lady Gaga and Lady Antebellum are dumb and mostly unfounded. He is entitled to being dumb, I’ll give him that.

Come on Deirdre, it’s great to have fans!

Mercedes: Forgot all about Billy J K and the Dakotas – loved them, and the Searchers – my faves were “Every Time That You Walk In The Room” and especially “Needles & Pins”. And Peter & Gordon. Most of these guys were wonderfully lucky – managed by Brian Epstein and given great songs by Lennon/McCartney – what a way to launch careers, with the best of songs possible!

Deirdre: Welcome – thats such a beautiful song, love to share it. Have fun in lovely CA!

Oh man, I love this guy. His honesty is truly like a breath of fresh air. I didn’t get to watch American Idol this year because I work nights – I heard about James Durbin from friends and started watching his performances and following him – he is unbelievable! I can’t believe he didn’t win the show. I haven’t been this excited about a new performer in a long, long time. Can’t wait to hear his debut CD!

As for “Crazy. Stupid, Love”, poor Steve Carell! Here’s a rom-com that’s supposed to build him up as a funny, ROMANTIC lead – and then the movie is stolen from him by Ryan Gosling, who’s character is everything Carell’s isn’t – funny, smart, sexy and YOUNG. Gosling’s scenes with Emma Stone are so yummy you keep wishing Carell and Julianne Moore, his wife in the movie, would stop intruding.

Speaking of James Durbin, during the AI season when there were 4 left, I did a blog on another site after the performances, where I predicted that James would be eliminated the next night. Made no negative comments or said anything unkind, just a prediction, like many of us make based upon how we think it might go.

I incurred the wrath of a lady from Canada, after his elimination occured as predicted, and she blamed it on me and all of America. She ranted caustically on and on — so I guess some fans in Canada like the hard rock as well.

I am neutral on Durbin as a fan and am not a hater , but it seems that his calling out of Gaga is a stretch, and a big one at that. The hook is similar for a few notes but that is it… In my view he would be wise to worrry abount himself right now and not call out the hottest thing in music right now … a little humilty james?? at least until you accomplish something in the music business…

Whats funny is pretty much everyone agrees she rips off other artists- he has the guts to come out & say it-gives an example-which is a pretty good one (agree or not) & hes told to STFU. Thats what I don’t get. When he makes his album I am sure other artist will have something to say about him and if it stinks You know they will be all over it.
But I cant wait to see what he does for Rock -I think alot of people are waiting for someone like him-there is a market out here-maybe small but they are out here-And I am one of them-very excited.

Never liked Durbin and always thought he is over-rated. If he can actually attain some success as an original artist then he can shoot his mouth off but until than he really needs to stop acting like a douche bag. I’ve never heard anything in his pre-idol career that hints to anything original, so he is living out a rockstar fantasy and getting caught up in his own hype.
