Top ‘Idol’ earner past year is Carrie Underwood; Pia Toscano gets pimped

AP photo of Carrie Underwood

No surprise here: Carrie Underwood was by far the biggest “Idol” earner, according to Forbes, drawing $20 million from May 2010 to May 2011.

Tied for second: Daughtry ($6 million) and Adam Lambert ($6 million.)  Daughtry had a moderate follow-up album but pocketed a decent amount of cash from touring. Lambert earned much of his cash from his world-wide tour.

No. 4:  Fantasia pulled in $4 million from her reality show and her new album and tour.

And here’s a surprise at No. 5: Jordin Sparks earned $3 million. Honestly, I have no idea how they got their figure. Her album has not done well at all, with no hit singles and she’s not a big concert draw.

No. 6: Kelly Clarkson: $2.5 million. She got some more radio airplay from a few hits but didn’t tour that much.

Jennifer Hudson, at No. 7, also barely toured and earned $2 million based on her new album. She has a film coming up starring as Winnie Mandela. I expect her earnings estimates will go up significantly this coming year.

No. 8: Kellie Pickler drew $1.8 million, primarily from touring. She had no new album to promote but has one coming up soon.

No. 9: Clay Aiken brought in $1.5 million, mostly from touring and a new album.

No. 10 (tie): Kat McPhee earned $1 million. She stars in NBC’s “Smash” next year.

No. 10 (tie) David Archuleta also brought in $1 million. He had a memoir and a second album that didn’t do particularly well.

No. 10 (tie): David Cook tied for 10th with $1 million. He also brought in some bucks from past singles and a modest amount of touring. His new album just came out.

Forbes said Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox and Season Two champ Ruben Studdard just missed the chart.

- Pia Toscano is being pimped heavily by the Powers That Be, despite her ninth place finish. It’s easy to say she’s being promoted more heavily than anybody who has finished in ninth before. She even has a single “This Time,” which she sings on tour. It’s not getting much radio airplay yet.

Check out this promo that aired on Fox this week:

The other ninth place finishers over the years:

Season 1: Jim Verraros
Season 2: Corey Clark
Season 3: Camile Velasco
Season 4: Nikko Smith
Season 5: Mandisa
Season 6: Gina Glocksen
Season 7: Ramiele Malubay
Season 8: Megan Joy
Season 9: Andrew Garcia/Katie Stevens (save created a situation where both kind of finished eighth/ninth)

Morning again!

9th place has changed over the years. There used to be 10 finalists, then 12 and sometimes 13.

Mandisa is making a pretty good living for herself on the Gospel circuit but Idol didn’t do any promoting of her as far as I know. Too bad since she’s probably a better singer than Pia. Popularity is a fickle thing and how a person looks sometimes is more of a factor than how talented a person is.

I’m assuming that the earnings report doesn’t just include singing. JHud, for example, has probably made quite a bit of cash hawking Weight Watchers.

Since “Idol” is going to promote 9th-place so heavily, they should go back and do the same for the best of the bunch from the list above. Namely, Katie and Gina. And of course, Ramiele!

In the “Sad but not surprising” news category –

Amy Winehouse spent the last week of her short and troubled life in an alcoholic, drug-fueled fog — which she capped by purchasing a stockpile of powerful narcotics at a London bar just hours before her death, according to British news reports.

Her final days were squandered in such a haze that even those who had watched her tumble from the top of the charts to a 27-year-old train wreck were left stunned.

Unfortunate that Amy joined the 27 club, but not surprising.

Jordin Sparks continues to be a “head-scratcher”. I still don’t know how she pulled off the win. I’m beginning to wonder about JHuds music. I’m not really sure if her music is branded properly. She’s definitely an r&b/soul singer, but her current album straddles the pop line. Although she can probably “sing the phone book”, I don’t think pop is her best suit. JMO

Thanks for link, Rickster. Feel sad for Winehouse parents and any other parents who have adult children addicted to drugs and alcohol. Since you can’t commit adults to treatment there really is no hope for the Amy Winehouses of the world. Incapable of change or looking out for themselves the addiction seems to lead to either death or the street.

And if I hear one more comment about the “27 Club” I’ll scream!

Good morning, by the way. Cool (80s) temps in Atlanta expected and RAIN

Saw “Captain America”, enjoyable enough escape from this horrible heat, and Chris Evans is a doll! Grrrr (oops, my cougarism is coming out). Saw “Harry Potter…” for the second time, this in plain old 2D (couldn’t agree with you more, Mercedes!) and without the expectation that the things I considered very important would all be in it and unchanged, and enjoyed it much more – great movie after all!

Seems like Ms Harriett takes lots and lots of beach vaca’s! Wish she’d take me with her on one!

To be totally honest, while the vodka and needles may be tasteless, I think honoring someone who basically killed herself is pretty tasteless too. She may have been talented but she was a train wreck, and celebrating someone who flat out refused to help save herself is not my idea of a good thing to do.

I didn’t see anything about needles either. I think someone is making stuff up, get a life loser! Sheesh, some people!

I guess I’m even more callous about this than Deirdre (well maybe not, it’s hard to tell). With a lunatic promoting his manifesto of stupidity by gunning down children, and countless masses starving to death in the horn of Africa, I can’t work up one itsy, bitsy, teensy, weensy bit of concern over Winehouse’s passing. I don’t care at all.

I do feel sympathy for her parents, I truly do. No parent should outlive their children. However, while an 11 year old being dumb and drowning in a lake last week brought tears to my eyes, Wino’s passing won’t.

More on the Haley Goddess signing…

This move continues what is in many ways Haley’s incredible underdog story, having been in the bottom three for many weeks during the season before coming into her own thanks to a stellar cover of “Bennie and the Jets.” She started to get an incredible fan base behind her, and ended up being a rallying cry for many fans after they felt she was treated unfairly by some of the judges in comparison to what they were saying for Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.

Maybe Scotty will get to through out the first pitch?

And I thought that Haley’s was one of her worst performances of the season. Her “What is and What Should Never Be” however, (with dad on guitar) was one of her better efforts.

Have a great evening, everybody.

Casey Abrams is at the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead with the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America folks. He just answered a bunch of questions from fans. I also interviewed him for a few minutes. Nice guy, as you can imagine. Learned a bit about bowel disease ulcerative colitis and the problems he faced. He’s in control now, no flare ups recently.

Was I callous? Maybe. I have little tolerance for people who won’t lift a finger to help themselves. This idea that addiction to drugs or alcohol is a disease bothers me, too. If you have a disease, don’t you try to do whatever you need to do to get better? If you’re diagnosed with cancer, wouldn’t you look for ways to fight it? This woman knew she was addicted, she knew it could kill her. Did she not care enough about herself? What about the people who loved her, her parents, her friends? Did she have no regard for them?

Jordin Sparks coming in there makes perfect sense to me. In this past year she took on the lead role in the Broadway musical “In the Heights,” which did very well. (She announced it in early May 2010 and did it August – November.) She also did her 35-stop Battlefield Tour in May/June 2010 and released a fragrance in October. She’s on the NKOTB/BSB tour right now, which began May 2011. So she’s not doing as badly as people seem to think. I can see how she’d pull in $1 million from all that combined.

The internet has given voice to judgmental people, and that’s not a good thing. I understand that Ms. Winehouse basically killed herself, but the loss of her unique voice and quirky style is lamentable. Had she lived, she no doubt would have eventually fell off, and drifted into irrelevance, and her inevitable death would rate no television coverage. I guess that unless you die well, your contributions are overlooked…PEACE.

Deirdre

Honor her contributions all you want but please do NOT put the drug and alcohol addicted Ms Winehouse on a pedestal. By all means, buy her music. It will help her loved ones deal with the tragedy in their lives. Ms Winehouse chose this hell on earth for them. Now they get to live the rest of their lives thinking that they couldn’t help her when in reality, it was her choice not to be helped.

Simon said Carrie would be the biggest Idol ever, or the biggest selling or biggest money maker, something like that.

Good looks, better than average voice, and more importantly…real hit songs will definitely do it. Plus, Carrie’s got a pleasing personality.

But hit songs will even make someone with less than average looks a star.

Lee DeWyze? ? ? I’d rather watch an Idaho potato up on stage.

Remember all that Adam pulled down 2nd place after his first post Idol album, his first world wide tour, compared to however long Carrie and Chris D. have been out, I think we will see Adam continue to soar to the top, and the most amazing of all is he is still as generous, giving, as he was coming right out of Idol. Also, I don’t think that money is the only measure of artistry.

You honor people in death by the way they lived their life. If a person lives an honorable life then you honor their memory likewise. Amy Winehouse was a fool, a talented singer yes, but nevertheless still a fool. She loved her alchohol, drugs, and sadly her life became more defined by that more than even her talent. So I do not find it tasteless for people to leave vodka bottles (or even drug needles) at these makeshift memorials (which I detest anyway) because that is how the girl lived.

Deirdre

Deb, you missed the qualifier on this….the revenue listed is ONLY for the past year. What Carrie got her first year out was about equal to Adam but irrelevant for this list. And May 2010 to May 2011 was NOT Adam’s first year out of Idol. That was May 2009 to May 2010.

Hello, you don’t know me, I don’t come here much. I’m only here because Adam’s name was mentioned (btw congrats to his amazing placement on the Forbes list, he worked his sweet ARSE off and earned every penny).

Diedre, I think your comments about Amy Winehouse are the most cold-heart, judgmental ones I’ve seen short of those that are just pure hatred.

I truly hope you nor anyone you love ever falls victim to addiction because you will have some hard lessons to learn. Amy has been in and out of treatment numerous times. She was an addict. You ask why she didn’t care enough about herself or her friends and family to seek help? Because she was an addict. Do you think addicts actively using have clear thoughts and proper judgment? Of course they don’t! Disregard for one’s self and friends and family are symptoms of her disease yet she still voluntarily went into treatment several times. She tried, she failed, she obviously gave up. She had to be in a tremendous amount of pain and self-loathing to points lower than most of us can even fathom. Why not show her some respect instead of casting stones….because you know what they say about that. RIP Amy.

Deidre, thank you pointing out my errors, but I don’t think I said it was his first year out of AI, but it still remains, he has put only one post AI album out, and has one worldwide tour. I was not trying to diminish Carrie Underwood’s accomplishments in any way, shape, or form. I think she is a wonderfully talented woman. However, I still think Adam showed phenomenally and will continue to soar,(ah yes, I am probably one of those devoted and advid Adam Lambert fans), and I still believe amount of money earned is not the most accurate or meaningful measure of artistry, just one person’s opinion, and again Deidre, I apoligize for any perceived lack of clarity in my first response.

umber8gurl “she obviously gave up”

And so I have given up on her. With scores dead in Norway, countless numbers starving in Africa, normal people suffering with addictions every day… I don’t care about her at all. The coverage of her passing is grossly misplaced, and showcases one of the things that is wrong with the world today.

Well the autopsy was inconclusive which means no heart attack, stroke, burst appendix, aneurysm, asphyxiation, etc…which leaves only the toxicology report. It’s obviously going to be an accidental overdose or some fatal combination of alcohol/drugs which Amy had a history of doing. Exact same situation as Heath Ledger. I guess you heartless people hate him too.

BTW Amy was addicted to opiates which is an affliction Dr Dru states has a worse prognosis for full recovery than most cancers because of the patients irrational thought processes and a false sense of feeling ‘cured’ early in treatment and thus leaving treatment too early only to relapse and repeat the cycle. I’m not championing her by any means and I wasn’t really a fan (although I’m realizing now how amazingly talented she was) but I am giving her respect as a human being who had a disease not a character flaw.

JTesla

Hate, no. Don’t hate either one. I’m just disgusted with the adoration being heaped on her after her death. Why would I hate her for what people do after she dies? That’s just silly. What happens regarding Heath and Wino and Michael Jackson’s after their passing is not their fault.

“I am giving her respect as a human being”

And I’m saying give some respect to human beings who deserve it. Have you heard what is happening in the horn of Africa region regarding famine? I’m not going to bother myself with the dead, when there are so many living that are suffering.
