VH1 promo photo of Adam Lambert

VH1 promo photo of Adam Lambert

The Hollywood Reporter provides a nice summary of what you’ll see in two weeks on the Adam Lambert “Behind the Music” on VH1 at 10 p.m. August 7. It goes through his life, from the time he realized he was gay in sixth grade to coming out at age 18 to his eight years doing stage productions to his “Idol” days to life since then.

Featured in the one-hour docuseries is never-before seen home video footage and interviews with industry experts and musical bigwigs. Guests include Lambert’s parents, childhood pal Scarlett Cherry, Island Def Jam exec. Barry Weiss, Idol’s Season 8 winner Kris Allen and The Hollywood Reporter’s very own Idol expert, Shirley Halperin.

Anyone remember when “Behind the Music” would feature artists who had many years experience in the industry and multiple hit songs? Nothing against Adam, but “Behind the Music” seems to have run out of people to cover.

Oh goody! An Adam thread. This should be almost as much fun as the Clay threads.

And before anyone decides to hang me out to dry, I love Adam, voted for him and think he’s very talented.

Maybe they’re featuring Adam because he has been in the entermainment business for ten years and because he is interesting and people will watch. I think Adam is a great musician and a great person!

There are a ton of no-name people who have been in the entertainment business for 10 years or more. They don’t receive the “Behind the music” treatment. Adam’s highest charting single hit #10 (a song that I like), his album peaked at #3 (great album) and he was nominated for a Grammy and won one Teen Choice Award. Those are decent accomplishments, but they are not worthy of landing an episode of this show.

So, what sets Adam apart from the multitude of artists who have done better than him, and been in the industry even longer? Well the only thing I can come up with is the fact that his is gay. What confuses me about that is that I was under the impression that Adam wanted to be known for his music, not his sexual orientation. So, why didn’t Adam say “no thanks” to the “Behind the music” people? Perhaps tell them that he is flattered, but perhaps it should wait until after his next album (which hopefully will provide some big hits). Befuddling.

I have to agree with JT re: using Adam’s sexual orientation as a focal point of the show. Of course, the show IS called “Behind the Music.” So, it’s focus is obviously not the music.

Deirdre

But when are we going to stop focusing on it. Thinking of the I Have a Dream speech…isn’t it about time we found something interesting about Adam other than his sexual orientation…..yes, that’s part of who he is but it isn’t all. And yes, this country is somewhat obsessed with “who is sleeping with who” no matter what orientation they may be but I hope the show focuses on his career moves rather than his orientation. He’s been through the show circuit long enough to have some interesting tales to tell…and wouldn’t we all like to hear an honest discussion about what it’s like for a contestant on Idol?

JTesla

Very interesting “whatever”, but this is the only AJC blog that I frequent. I occasionally dip into Rodney’s other blog, but rarely comment. So maybe you are a tad delusional. Just a tad.

Sold out world tour… yeah because no one else has ever done that. I’m not saying that he hasn’t had a great run so far, but not “Behind the music” worthy… unless the show has run out of ideas.

ROOF ROOF ROOF ROOF…

Translation:

uhh..hmmm..first I have to say Adam is interesting to watch and hear when hes not Screaming. Thats the same way I feel about Fantasia. Take take out the screaming and you have a rather Unique(different) sound thats not bad at all.

I dont always agree with Jtesla but have to Bark in(his?)favor, thanks Deirdre for saying “him” I thought JT was a girl sans Tesl(a):-) any who, I am with JTesla..behind the music should be reserved for folks who been in the music business(Successfully, for 25yrs or better and that does not mean One hit cd and a solded out Tour) I mean it aint like every time you turn on the TV or radio Adam comes on blaring across the airwaves or screen with Hit after HIT (NOT).

I have had a problem for Quite some time on how they loosely place titles on new comers..such as Diva, and Superstar. As far as Smokey never having been on Behind the Music, hmmm I dont remember him Ever being featured on much of anything and He really has payed his dues(bursted on the scene with his group the Mircales aka 1958 with Bad Girl not to mention wrote many Mega hits turning some folks into Mega Stars(He discovered Diana Ross(Supremes) wrote Mary Wells My Guy and the Temptations My Girl to name just a couple, as well as for himself and his group.

What has Adam wrote and produced for anyone, aside from himself? Dude was Unheard of by the masses before American Idol(sorry Never heard of him before AI).

My Point IS:

It seems folks can be labeled a Superstar very eazy these days Unfortunately..and they Really Have NOT payed their dues as far as Time in the business. Let him rack up atleast about 6 more No.1 cds and solded out TOURS..and add about 20yrs and see if hes Still making No.1 Cds 20yrs from his Last No.1 Then perhaps we can take a LOOK into Behind His Music and what’s kept him HOT. Not interested in his sexual orientation as it has nothing to do with his Music or Talent, sorry.

Oh well its Quite a different World from the fabulous 1960s,70s, and 80s where people had more Talent in one finger than some folks(Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Others) have in their entire body.

I would give anything to go back to the Beatles and Motown Golden Years. both in the Fabulous 1960s of course.

When Smokey Sings by ABC:

Debonair lullabies in melodies revealed
In deep despair on lonely nights
He knows just how you feel
The slyest rhymes – the sharpest suits
In miracles made real

Like a bird in flight on a hot sweet night
You know you’re right just to hold her tight
He soothes it right – makes it outtasite
And everything’s good in the world tonight!

Chorus:
When Smokey sings – I hear violins
When Smokey sings – I forget everything
As she’s packing her things
As she’s spreading her wings

The front door might slam
But the back door it rings
And Smokey sings… he sings

Elegance in eloquence – for sale or rent or hire
Should I say – yes I match his best
Then I would be a liar S
ymphonies that soothe the rage
When lovers’ hearts catch fire

Like a bird in flight on a hot sweet night
You know you’re right just to hold her tight
He soothes it right – makes it outtasite
And everything’s good in the world tonight!

(chorus)
Smashing the hell With the heaven she brings
Then Smokey sings… he sings

Luther croons
Sly’s the original – originator
James screams
Marvin was the only innovator
But nothing can compare
Nothing can compare
When Smokey sings

(chorus)
She threw back the ring
When Smokey sings…
Smokey sings…
Smokey sings…

I agree with JTesla. In order to be on BTM, I thought you had to achieve stardom, submit to and then overcome heroin or alcohol addiction, total at least one car, kick out and then reunite with an unrealiable bandmate and then chuck your current gig as a teacher/realtor/producer to go back on the road one more time.

Nowadays, people are on BTM before I have even heard of them, which either means the bar has been lowered or I am getting really old. Or both.

He absolutely has the right to do what he wants with who he wants and look how he wants. But I reserve the right to be offended by some of the things he does or says.

Am I old fashioned because I don’t like his outlandish behavior or wardrobe? Proudly so!. But no homophobia here.

From wikipedia:

Much has been made of whether her first name ends in an “a” or an “e”. According to Ross, her mother actually named her “Diane” but a clerical error resulted in her name being recorded as “Diana” on her birth certificate. She always went by “Dizzy DJ” at home and at school. Her high school yearbook listed her as “Diana” and as early as 1963, when The Supremes released their first album, she was listed in the liner notes as “Diana”.

Actually Harriet when it comes too DIANA, I can handle anyone..Except..Ms Ross herself of course.

Deirdre
Randy Tarabello(chk spelling of last name) who wrote several bios on Diana..said it was Diana’s father who named her and was quoted as saying He named her Diana. But whether it was 1963 or 1965. When they the Supremes became Big she was started using the name Diana. I ACTUALLY remember when she was referred to as Diane, I was 7 years old in 1963,. Their first Lp. Meet the Supremes shes listed as Diana.and that Album which was released in 1963 and my family bought the Album.

But the Fact of the matter is..a Person can call themself Whatever they want regardless of what Mommie or Daddie named them.

Example..NO ONE REFERS to Marilyn Monroe as Norma Jean..No One. If Marilyn was allowed to Keep her Made up name as Marilyn Monroe. how come Diana cant keep her name as Diana? Sounds a little Bias to me. Go on ANY video..or any history reference and See if you see folks calling Marilyn Monroe..Norma Jean. I bet you wont. other Legends that did NOT use their real names. Tony Bennett, born Anthony dominick Benedetto…NO ONE calls Tony Bennett Anthony Benedetto.. Judy Garland..Francis Ethel Gumm Where do you see ANY ONE calling Judy Garland FRANCIS GUMM? You wont..yet Francis Ethel Gumm is her Real NAME.

Frank Sinatra..born. or real name FRANCIS Albert Sinatra…Would have like to see what old blue eyes would have said if you called him Francis. Probably punch your lights out or Curse your ass out..Frank had a temper.

Beth says I think I am Diana Ross..well she/he must be Mary Wilson or Martha Reeves because they are the ONLY ones that still call Diana Diane and that probably is stemmed from Jealousy or because they Knew her BEFORE she became Famous and Eclisped them leaving them in the DUST.. .
There are Many Many others who changed their names. So my point is..why Single out Diana? its called BIAS.

If you were country, everything you sang was country. If you were jazzy, everything you sang was that way. Even Bucky, in season 5, tried to lose his country sensibility here with a bit of success, according to the judges: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2qeLXYWf5A

Ridley Scott , filming his first movie in 3-D, is so taken with the project he swears all his movies from now on will be made in 3-D. Fortunately there are more directors in the world. Unless James Cameron is involved, I hate 3-D with a passion. It’s usually fake 3-D, i.e. filmed in 2-D, with a few “effects” added… and an inflated budget AND higher ticket prices for us, the consumers.

I enjoyed Transformers in 3-D, made the movie all perty. Of course it didn’t make or break the film because in the end it was still Michael Bay schlock.

He is a good singer. I loved his version of Mad World. That’s about it for me.

Oh goody! An Adam thread. This should be almost as much fun as the Clay threads.

And before anyone decides to hang me out to dry, I love Adam, voted for him and think he’s very talented.

I enjoyed just about every one of his performances. “Tears of a Clown” was classic!

Maybe they’re featuring Adam because he has been in the entermainment business for ten years and because he is interesting and people will watch. I think Adam is a great musician and a great person!

JTesla – A tad bit of a hater I guess…First what sets Adam apart…is his extroadinary voice and performance ability…I truly believe it is hard to understand this unless you see him live…My daughter and I saw him twice last year…He is truly incredible…There are not many stars today…who when performing live…sound better…need no editing or auto-tuning…and can dance and perform like he can. His Glam Tour was extremely successful and and his fan base in US and worldwide is huge….He is as Paula on Idol said…going to iconic…He is humble still, gives a lot to charities (has helped raise over one million dollars in his last two extremely busy years, for three charities), he takes time to give back to his fans with his twitter parties…his occasions where he pops in to listen to young stars perform (children)…he is always promoting other rising artist work on twitter and elsewhere…Yes …why not feature the hottest new male singer…makes total sense and I can not wait to see it.

Deirdre – News flash…Durbin copied artist who had already sung the songs he sang…including Muse…his performance on Idol was a copy of Muse’s performance on Grammies…The guy also is a jerk…so stuck on himself it is not funny….Nothing original ..Although he claimed so….he was not the first person to rock the Idol stage…let’s see Daughtry, Vice, Cook…and Adam…rocked it before him…

kmmorgan: “JTesla – A tad bit of a hater I guess”

Here is an idea, instead of blindly copying what was already typed you should try reading it. Let’s see what I said about Adam:

“Nothing against Adam, but…” was a statement about Behind the Music, I, again, have nothing against Adam.

“Adam’s highest charting single hit #10 (a song that I like), his album peaked at #3 (great album)”, so I like his single, and his album and that makes me a tad bit of a hater? Boy, that must make you a huge hater.

Try again kmmorgan because you failed.

Also: “Durbin… The guy also is a jerk”

Talk about hater! Why do Adam fans feel so threatened by James?

kmmorgan…perhaps you missed my point…which was, imo, he successfully stepped out of his “arena rock” box with this song. I never said it was original. May I point out that Adam did some copying as well during his stint on Idol…they all do. Cook”s Billie Jean, which I also linked on this blog thread was taken in part from another singer.

And not once did I EVER say that Durbin was the first rocker on Idol. Read the context please…we were talking about last season, specifically that the themes didn’t allow much change for the singers. My point, again, was that Scotty and Lauren WERE given the opportunity to change it up and they didn’t…or couldn’t.

If you don’t like ADAM LAMBERT what are you doing writting about him? Go and do something instead of read about him. IGNORANTS!!!!!!!!!!!! ADAM LAMBERT is the best singer in the world and if he is gay are his bussiness. or maybe you are mad because you are a closet person.
