Paul McDonald provides “reality check” to his younger Idols 10 mates

To the Press-Democrat, 26-year-old Paul McDonald provides a reality check to his younger, more naive mates in the Season 10 “Idols Live” crew:

And as we all know, the show is very very scripted. It leaves very little room for improvisation.

“I don’t know if they get it. I keep sticking it in their heads like guys this is a misbelief of what rock ’n roll is like. It’s not gonna be like this always. When a half-dozen of them are complaining I want to like shake em …

“We get to pretend like we are rock ’n roll stars for a summer. We are seeing what it’s like to play before thousands a night. After the show it won’t be like that unless you have like hit records. You don’t go from arenas and then back to arenas. You go back down to the club circuit and build your own name.

“I tell them to soak this all in cause you aren’t going to be cruising in six tour buses and a crew with catering. Normally you are loading in your own gear and hopping back in the van and cruising to the next city.”

-”Idols Live’ is going to the Phillipines in September. They went there season 3, when Jasmine Trias was popular. Are they going there this year because of Thia Megia?

I think Idol makes a lot of money in the Phillipines. Archie and Cook are hugely popular there.

I think Paul has a better understanding of what the Idols face post tour. However, it shouldn’t take a genius to look at past Idol seasons and pretty much figure out what they have in front of them.

I really like this guy. Obviously he’s right. Deirdre–I think it’s easy for the Idolettes to lose perspective. They’re in a bubble right now, and nobody normally tells them “Enjoy this, because your 15 minutes are just about up.” He’s doing them a service by reminding them of it when it’s too easy to forget. Everybody thinks they’re the next Carrie Underwood and they’re only going to go up from here.

Remember when Chris Sligh wrote his message on the same subject? It was very well worded and directly to the same point Paul is making.

As I said, I think Paul has a better understanding of what the Idols face post tour. But if their heads are that much in the clouds then telling them won’t make much difference. Sometimes experience is the only lesson from which people learn.

I do remember Chris’ message…I wonder how many of them listened to that.

Wise man. The club circuit doesn’t normally take you to the Phillipines.

Idol is big in the Phillipines, we even have a fairly-regular blogger from there.

Wednesday, Bravo and Ryan Seacrest Productions announced plans for a new docu-series, “Shahs of Sunset” (working title), which will follow a group of young Persian-American friends who juggle living and working in Los Angeles while balancing the demands of their families and traditions.

Really?

Why not just call it “Even Richer Than the Khardasians” ?

Nice to hear from you KPH.

Deirdre, that sounds like the dumbest television show since the Jersey Shore mess… which is maybe what they are going for. Let’s see, take a stereotype and exploit it for $. I guess this one could work too.

So this show is going to be about Persian crossed with American shorthair cats! They dont work all they do is lay around and lick themselves and I will lay odds that they can’t juggle either! They do have great balance however but I don’t think the show will make it! :-)

Never thought much of Paul McDonald as a singer but he might just make it as a philosopher! …That’s if there’s a huge demand for that kind of thing in the reality TV “celebrity” crowd!

If you watch the show billings/ads for your State Fairs, some County Fairs or City “special annual events” – you see a lot of double billings and “openers” for the bigger name artists that have the event booked.

After the AI tour, some of the idols will be able to shag-in through promoters to: level 3 – open,(maybe a $2,000 to $2,500 check or more – if the promoter stays afloat. Or level 2, if their name & game is a reasonable draw by itself, they may get cuts as a co-bill of $5,000 and up for the bigger events, and perhaps on a percentage of door/ticket fee. The main draw usually will get a gauranteed base plus or against a good % of ticket sales.

Paul should have enough name recognition at this point, to get some add-on billing money, and not just 4 guys splitting $850. and tips after a Friday night gig at the Casino. Doubt that he will ever be a #1 draw in a larger venue, but may have some chances to Buddy-up with some bigger names in Country Music to warm-up the crowd and get paid enough to buy some mighty fine sport coats.

And who knows, he might marry a lady of means, and he should have a little bankroll by the end of the tour and from the show. . But even the idols in their fame-bubble right now, can get cranky with how things are done & run on the road. Every stage & venue has it’s own strange twists, sound problems, inconveniences, etc. Paul is used to it, some of the others are not. He likely appreciates the opportunity a lot more than.
