Sorry, Kara: Bravo’s non hit ‘Platinum Hit’ bumped to Friday nights

I’ve enjoyed “Platinum Hit” for what it’s worth. But clearly not many others are. The show, which features Jewel and “Idol” refugee judge Kara DioGuardi, has been drawing fewer and fewer viewers each week since its debut.

On June 27, the last time it aired on Monday, the show drew a mere 397,000 viewers.

That is far less than any of Bravo’s “Real Housewives” shows and even fewer than its “Project Runway” ripoff “Fashion Show.”

So Bravo, instead of canceling it outright, is burying it at 8 p.m. Fridays. I have it on DVR so  I’ll keep tracking it. What do you think went wrong with this show?

I have found both Kara and Jewel a bit chilly but not repulsive. A handful of the contestants have shown enough personality to be passably memorable, including Jes Hudack and Jackie Tohn, the two former “Idol’ contestants. Mr. Eye Roller Nick Nittoli is the token villain. Jes and Johnny Marnell have fallen in love (or at least, deep infatuation.) Overall, the songs they’ve created haven’t been bad considering the circumstance.

Personally, I am a softie for competition shows. I watch most of them, from ‘Top Chef” to “Food Network Star” to “HGTV Design Star.” Too bad this one didn’t work out.

I really enjoy competition shows like you Rodney. I watch “Top Chef” and “The Next Food Network Star”. I also enjoy “Platinum Hit” so far. The songs that the contestants manage to come up with are really great. It’s unfortunate that most people don’t seem to enjoy it.

It’s not my thing, but that is too bad that it is not doing as well. It was nice to see something other than just another song and dance competition.

I think the problem may be Kara and Jewell more than the kids writing/performing, Some of us felt that Jewell was sometimes a nasty self-serving (person) , as a judge/mentor/coach on Nashville Star in the 2008 season. She is a little more professional now, than she was then I believe.

The show that year also produced a winner that was “won and done”, never able to move upward enough in the Country Music biz to fully capitalize on the brief fame of the win. Another technically very good singer and very likeable person – without the props, appeal and pzazz (the x-factor) to be the “Star” the competition was supposed to be creating in the business.

Morning!

I’ve seen bits and pieces of Platinum Hit and it feels scripted to me. At least as far as Jewel and Kara are concerned. Sometimes it feels like everything they say has been written by someone else…or at the very least, they are edited so strictly that they have little or no personality.

I haven’t seen this show yet. Is it advertised properly? I don’t even know what night it comes on, or day of the week. Glad The Voice has made it through to another season. I’m looking forward to the Sing Off and Sunday’s Best coming up. Oh yeah, and X-Factor.

I am following SYTYCD with great interest. Two Atlanta-area dancers are in the running, with one of them–Melanie–likely to be top two, if not take it all.

Also, AGT will begin getting better, now that the Hollywood rounds begin.

Good Morning……

Have a few minutes to myself right now, since I have both kids intertained with cartoons. May have bitten off more than I can chew with watching the great grands while their mommy works. I’m constantly on the move with the 1 y/o since she is into everything and loves to eat Memory and Molly’s dog food. Going to purchase a couple of gates this weekend to keep her out of the kitchen. The 5 y/o does okay with the TV until he throws a temper tantrum. The good Lord knew what he was doing when he let the younger ones have the babies!!!!!

I have never seen PH and don’t plan to, so if Bravo wants to move it to Fridays, it won’t bother me any. I will stick with my regular shows (SYTYCD, AGT) until AI and DWTS come back on. And of course, I will watch X Factor and see how I like it, and may become a fan of it. However, it WON’T replace idol for me.

Don’t know if any of you have heard it, but the country radio stations are giving alot of airtime to Scotty’s first release. I heard it about 6 -8 times in July 4th. So, good for him.

Nana, there is no shame in telling your granddaughter that the job may be too much for you. Maybe you can share days with another relative. Hubby and I will be babysitting Lucas soon and I know how tired we’ll get. It’s a big job no matter how much you love the little tykes.

harriet, AGT always get a little better after the prelims but I’m still not all that enthused about the circus-style acts although I know Vegas likes them.

Nana: agree with Deirdre – these are your “golden years” and not meant to be spent 5 days a week as a totally mental and physical wreck. Your grandkids would certainly understand if you asked them to make additional arrangements, so you could do a couple days, and then rest up for the next week!

At the moment. I’m the only one not working and she can’t afford a day care centert. She doesn’t receive support from the father so it’s all on her to do it. This is just the second week, so I will stay with it a while longer and see if things get better and easier.

@carla. I guess my cooking is okay since I haven’t killed anyone yet. Having a fish fry tomorrow for some friends and making homemade hushpuppies, cole slaw and french fries to go with the catfish filets, all this topped off with a peach cobbler and vanilla ice cream.

I can not pick it up on either the console or the portable in the den so this Bravo television network must be on UHF which I do not watch because I do not like Ted Turner or that that television program about the girls and a professor and I mean the ones on the island and not that other one. Also not familiar to me are these girls and mean the Jewel and Kara ones and not the ones on the island. But do not go by me please because I do not get out as much as I used to unless my wife is home.

G has a point – except for Rodney’s writing about “PH” i haven’t seen ANY advertising or editorial article about the show. I keep thnking I’d like to check it out…forget to record, other things to do and see, etc.

hello nana, and how I feel for you… these last ten days hubby and I have “entertained” three young cousins, 10, 11 and 14, and they are wonderful kids, with great manners, but child care is draining, Kept thinking my dvd-library would keep them amused, but the movies are either not age-appropriate, or a family member dies in them. Two of “my” kids lost their mother a few years ago, so I try to stay away from that subject.

Mo! So glad to hear from you–especially when you bring tidings from the Dark Ages of television. Love you!

Best of luck, Nana. I know you will do it, and the gates are just the thing!

D, re: AGT–I sift through most of those circus acts to get to the good stuff, and there are quite a few good ones so far this time. The guy who sang “Angel” did not make it to Hollywood, but Lys Agnes (my favorite so far) did, and there is a wonderful little 11 year old keyboardist/singer who will go far, too.

Nana, who are you liking so far on SYTYCD? I love Melanie and Marko, and also Mitchell (he’s from Atlanta).

The problem with the show is definitely the judges, they do seem to exude little or no personality.
But also, sometimes you think, “wtf are they listening to that i can’t hear?”
Jackie Tohn should have been cut loose long ago, and so should the girl who’s Johnny’s (scripted?) love interest.
The show just needs a revamp and better advertising.
Maybe better casting too.
Really? Blessing?… Really?

I’m halfway keeping up with SYTYCD. What’s the girls name with the strong “Nair” legs. Not only is she easy on the eyeballs, but I really like her style. They have some pretty decent hip hop/street dancers, but not quite as good as ABDC standouts. Tadd is pretty good.

Master Chef has been drawing my attention. It’s funny how a lot of these contestents can cook extravagant dishes, but can’t fry fish or grill burgers. It’s like being book smart but having no common sense. LOL!

@ Harriett – My fave on SYTYCD are the same as yours. Although, I think Mitchell is closing the gap between him and Marko as my fave male dancer.

As for AGT? Definitely entertaining as usual. I like the way the separate the categoies to determine who goes through. That creates good balance. I think the vocalist are strong this year. For some reason, I’m not all that impressed with magicians this year, and the animal acts are a major FAIL. I usually compare the dance groups to ABDC. Kind of so-so at this point. I’ll probably solidify my favorites after next week.

Saw Javier Colon on Jay Leno last night with a full band. He actually did very well with the song, better than what I had seen him do on the show, without a lot of wild high-note screechy runs. He got a good plug from Leno on his newly released “Voice” album of his songs from the show.

Glad for Javier. Nana, I think Mitchell is a very close second for me. I really love the talent this season.

G, I am like you in that I will pick favorites next week from among those who get through. However, I really loved Lys Agnes when she was on, and she got thru without having to perfom again.

I held on for as long as I could. I am giving up on PH. Jewel is boring and Kara has ZERO personality. I can’t go another week watching Nick slip thru the cracks and survive. He is full of himself and the world will not be his fan after seeing his true personality. PH SUCKS!

I watched the first few weeks and then gave up. Agree with previous comments regarding the judges and the overly scripted format and editing. But there are other mistakes too. It was very monotonous: Create a hook, then turn it into a song. Over and over again. Why? Some hooks were bad enough they were not worth being turned into songs, yet we had to watch the train wreck unfold. Why this limitation in how the show is set up. I would be interested in other scenarios too: Give everyone the same base rhythm, so what melody and lyric they can set to it? Or start with a certain given melody and focus on the most interesting instrumentation. Or take a starting point, like certain lyrics, now work them out in different ways – dance, pop, electronic, rock, etc.)….These are just a few ideas, but I think they would let us viewers get more insight into the music writing process and in the end I think that those that would watch such a show would probably want to find something out about how a song is made. I am not really sure that the few weeks I watched really showed me anything substantial, I did not know already.
Additionally, the playing up drama between the contestants comes across as very artificial and not really working in this setting.
I lost interest and tuned out, but I am sad that it did not work out, I was interested in the theme of the show. But the execution of the whole thing sucked, starting with the concept and all the way down to the editing of the show.

The show has not been advertised properly- it is like they gave up on it. Theyleave it up to people to figure out that this show exists. They don’t even do reruns of the show like the do when they air all the other shows on Bravo that you don’t want to see more than once. Multiple airings help people to catch the show that may have missed it or find out that it exists. This show is by far better than some other competition shows and some shows that Bravo has on the air. If they make another housewife show I will yell- who needs another one those? I love the cast and the best part is there will be a different one each year but it looks like Bravo is struggling with that decision. I for one hope they save the show!
