Fantasia made a surprise appearance at the Ferst Center for the Ron Clark Academy graduation. CREDIT: Rodney Ho/rho@ajc.com
Five years ago, I covered “The Ron Clark Story” on TNT starring Matthew Perry. It was based on the true story of Ron Clark, a North Carolina boy who landed a teaching job in New York City and found a way to touch the kids. He eventually wrote a book outlining his philosophies on teaching. Oprah Winfrey put him on the show and even recommended to him he use the monies for bigger and better things.
That led to the Ron Clark Academy in South Atlanta, an incubator of sorts where he teaches about 80 students but also brings in thousands of teachers a year from around the world to see his practices in action. The work is rigorous but the atmosphere is nurturing. He’ll even teach kids songs to help them learn. And he’s a ball of energy, with a tendency to jump on tables to prove his points. He and fellow educator Kim Bearden raised millions from individuals, corporations and foundations and opened the school in 2007 with fifth and sixth graders.
Last year, Oprah made a surprise visit to the first graduation of the first class. Last night, at the Ferst Center at Georgia Tech, the academy graduated the first 20 students who spent the full four years there. It was a touching three hours, full of inspirational speeches and videos, plus appearances by Bow Wow, Nelly and actor Brandon Jones, who was in the original movie “The Ron Clark Story.”
Near the end, Fantasia popped up to sing “I Believe,” her coronation song on “Idol” in 2004. I can’t say she performed it with the passion of 2004 but she did tell them that she regretted dropping out of school. She spent her early post-”Idol” years struggling with finances, partially because of her lack of education, she said. Her daughter, believe it or not, is now almost 10 years old!
Here is the performance:

Are you sure Fantasia was at the Ferst Center? Looks more like she was dressed for Caesars Palace! (Maybe adding a Roman helmet would have prevented her from singing.)

I see Rebecca Black’s video has been pulled from YouTube over a legal dispute between the Video Production Company and Rebecca’s representation – on who owns the rights to the video. Appears her mother paid the video compnay to produce it, so she bought and paid for their services.
But now the success of the video has the production company coming after the money it may produce for other connections in advertising, promotion or sales related revenue. Welcome to the Music Business.

I love it. Fantansia is an excellent example of how important education is for todays youth. She dropped out of school and the basic fundamentals almost ruined. She went back and received her GED..and now understands the game..Im so proud of her..such inspiration…and the haters will always be around..She;s far from perfect like so many of us are, but she’s in the game and doing it..I love it…The main point was her story and how the kids will benefit from a good education…

Why in the hell would they let this idiot in at the Ron Clark Acd? She can’t even read past a 4th grade level and that is a fact. She had a child out of wedlock and can’t read and she sure as hell wasn’t my American Idol.

Sometimes we can be so negative at times. Fantasia’s story was very befitting to the Ron Clark Academy students. They all have overcome obstacles in life. For anyone to make a negative comment on this story, you are a HATER. A negative person who needs to get a life and some business about yourself. We should all LOVE each other, on this earth. If you can’t say something positive, don’t say anything at all.

WOW…I am appalled at the level of ignorance spewing from these comments about Fantasia. I would hate to see the skeletons that fall from your closets. Fantasia had a child out of wedlock like so many others who are making power moves in Hollywood, Wall Street, politics and the list goes on. You don’t have to acknowledge her accomplishments or even care for that matter, but to spit fire on her name is childish, irresponsible and just pure ignorant. And the fact that she dropped out of school and did not get to a reading level that society deems as appropriate, does not hold weight to the fact that she recognizes the error in her ways and has made mends to improve her academic abilities. And to whoever said that she is not their “American Idol”, I can assure you that she is not losing sleep. In fact, she wasn’t chosen by alot of people, but alas she was the winner.

First of all Ho, I disagree with your review. She did a phenomenal job. It was sung differentl becaue whe she won Idol it was about her and she “cried” this rendition was about the students and to enurage them. And to all the “white” haters who do not have a clue who better than Fantasia t encourage these young grauates, because it’s people like you who have spoken the negative into their lives ant they too like her have overcome many obstacles. She and the song were both very appropriate.WHITE AMERICA does not have a clue all you know to do is hate…and you got some folks in your own race who need to hear this…there is a showon MTV that proves this everyday pregant @ 16 mostly all WHITE!!! People have a right to their opinions whether y’all like them or not. Please stop the name calling. Just because someone doesn’t like the person you like is no excuse. Fantastia has a lot of fans. Be happy with that and don’t worry about the people who are not her fans.
And seriously, before you start calling someone “illeterate” learn how to spell it!

Deirdre, I agree that people have the right to their opinions. I know that better than anyone because I ALWAYS have an opinion about something, however I think the reason that this post received the responses that it did in support of Fantasia is because although you may not like a person does not give you the ‘right’ to speak such venom about that person. Truly it just takes up too much energy to be speak negativity. I’m not a fan of the likes of Lady Gaga for example, but she has plenty of fans and is not starving for my support. However, I don’t have anything negative to say. If I don’t want to read the article, I don’t…if I don’t want to hear the music, I turn the station, if I don’t want to watch the video, I switch to another channel. It’s less energy in that than me speaking negatively about her. She has proven to be a huge success amidst all of her craziness and difference, but people love her so who am I to spend time responding negatively against her?

I see nothing of “venom” in any of the posts by people who do not care for Fantasia. I see a LOT of venom in the posts from people who do like Fantasia. Some people believe that when they are disagreed with they are disrespected. Isn’t that a bit like thinking that you are always right and therefore everyone else should bow to your opinion?
This is a blog about American Idol, not a Fantasia blog. Many people on here have opinions about each of the winners, both good and bad. For instance, if this particular thread was about Lee DeWyze, you wouldn’t be reading a whole lot of positive comments.
The point is that both positive and negative comments are common on this blog. If y’all can’t handle someone being negative about one of your favorites, that’s a problem you’ll have to deal with. Because, the world is made up of different folks who have different opinions. And they ALL have a right to express those opinions.

@strangedaysindeed I can feel you but Fantasia has some real supporters and times they come out fighting. The industry is bigotted and bias.I don’t think they put you all in same category, but the internet and media as a whole has been brutal to her and not completely honest,so I understand their support. She was GREAT choice for these students.Unless you have had obstacles to overcome then you could or would not have a clue.Congrats to your daughter.
To the Ho guy your comment about her performance is classic example of how you all throw rocks at this girl. That was a different time and that performance was emotional or a reason she won against ALL odds.

EVERYONE has obstacles to overcome! No ONE has a life free of sorrow OR mistakes OR regrets. These things do NOT make Fantasia any more special that anyone else in this world.
I don’t like Fantasia’s VOICE. I don’t know her personally so I can’t say whether I’d like her as a person or not. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. As a singer, she is not for me. The Idols winners whose voices I like: Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, David Cook.
The Idol winners whose voices I don’t like: Fantasia, Lee DeWyze. The Idol winners that are just ok to me: Taylor Hicks, Kris Allen, Scotty

I personally enjoyed the performance. Then again I personally like Fantasia.I don’t think she is losing any sleep over who does and does not like her. She is probably somewhere resting and getting ready to perform and make some money. She may not have what some other Idol has, but it’s millions of people who do not have what she has and I would guess that none of us has the money she does,so we all may as well get over it.She is not going anywhere and still is getting paid.So you can like her or not.The girl has lost and regained more than you will evr see in this lifetime unless you hit the lotto. If you have not gone through obstacles in life you won’t like her or the performance.

One of the candidates to replace Regis on his show is Ryan Seacrest. I’m not buying into this one. Live is “live” every morning in NYC. Idol is live twice a week in L.A. Just don’t see it happening.

Morning! And, D, do not worry about this “The Killing” newbie. I am going to go back and re-watch it anyway, since I had already forgotten who some of the characters were from my reading. But, after you see it, I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Today is going to be very boring at work. Boss and second in command in south FL until Thurs. Keep thinking I should have brought my guitar to work.

Speaking of the “Boss” – very sad news about the passing of Clarence (Big Man) Clemons from complications from a stroke.
Saw them at the Omni decades ago.. and the man could outplay any one on the saxaphome.
RIP “Big Man”

Hi y’all,
Man, how do I always manage to miss these weekend parties y’all throw?
D, I SO want to hear what you and the “newbies” think about The Killing’s finale last night. HOLY. CRAP. is all I’ll say for now.
Other than that, eh, I got nuthin’. Hope all the dads on the blog had a nice Father’s Day!

kcf…trying VERY HARD not to reveal anything about “The Killing”… but I didn’t care for the show’s choice of murderer. Which leads me to believe the show will continute next season with the same cast of suspects… and a STILL unsolved crime. After all, the Danish original consisted of 20 episodes and we only got, what, 12 or 13?

I am up with everything on The Killing now, and join KCF in her observation of “HOLY. CRAP. D, I am respecting your wish not to discuss until you’ve seen it.

Hi ya’ll. Had a wonderful Birthday and Father’s day yesterday. Spent some of the day cleaning up broken trees and limbs from Daturday evenings storms.

And, what about the “Thrones” finale???
I love the blonde with dragon eggs!! That was a way better ending than the lame one offered by “The
Killing” .

Lordy, glad I don’t “do” computers on the weekend! Re the “F” word, she certainly has a number of “fans” who should be enrolling in the Ron Clark Academy immediately! Education seems sparse to lacking in many of the posts above!
That woman has certainly proven, over and over, to have extremely loose morals and terribly poor judgment. Add to it that her singing and speaking voices are, in the opinion of many regulars on this blog, like nails on chalk board (for those who’ve not been to school and therefore don’t know how that sounds, let us say extremely screetchy).
A very bad Saturday night in the storms. We set off at exactly 6:12 to go out to dinner, when the storm was just starting up. Turned out of my street going south on Powers Ferry. Stopped a couple mins later at the light at Terrell Mill when a fire truck went flying by headed North.
When we got home, PF was blocked about 50 ft south of the entrance to my street. A huge tree had fallen and killed a woman driving N on PF. The 911 call came in at 6:15 – meaning if we’d been 1 or 2 minutes later leaving, we’d have been hit by the tree. Must have passed that poor woman on the road. I feel really, really lucky to be alive right now!

Sam-A,so glad you’re still with us. We live not far away from where a tree crashed on top of woman’s Mini-Cooper last week. She managed to climb out through the one surviving window with help from people. Point is, when those winds start up, try not to be on the road.

Just finished The Killing. Although the killer was not on my original list I started suspecting him when he came up with that gas station off the beaten path. My first thought was that was way too convenient, my second was maybe it wasn’t, maybe he already knows. I think the whole idea of dirty politics made that ending totally plausible. And at the end, the announcer said next season would feature a whole new killing to solve.
As for Game of Thrones…I’m really looking forward to next season.

Great performance. She had an even greater one at Chastain Park on Friday night. Very enjoyable to watch. It’s sad that a young person can be judged so harshly. I remember being young and DUMB, making mistakes and finally coming to my senses and making better choices. I now have the pleasure of watching my 23 and 20 year olds, being young and DUMB, making questionable choices that only maturity and wisdom will correct. The beauty is, they don’t have a blog judging and criticizing their every move. Imagine how hurtful that would be for “your” child to be called Fangtasia and Stanktasia. Instead of judging and being mean about our young people, try praying for them….that’s what my mom and others did for me.
Did I spell all of my words right????:)
