Before the “Idol” finale last week, 15 past contestants popped up for an AT&T event outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. I had polled you guys for who to interview. I managed to get the top 3, including Elliott Yamin and Michael Johns, already posted. Here is my talk with Diana DeGarmo.
Last week, she took a break near the end of a nine-month run as buxom Doralee on the national tour of “9 to 5″ in Dallas, flying to Los Angeles for the event. She was scheduled to sing first, then take a helicopter back to LAX to make it for that night’s “9 to 5″ performance.
“AT&T is repped out of Georgia,” she said. “I got to represent for the Georgians.”
She is still enjoying the gig. “The show has evolved with us as actors,” she said. “We have found subtext within the text to keep us entertained as human beings and keep the show fresh and exciting.”
The most difficult part: wearing those Dolly Parton heels. “I’m usually a boot kind of girl. Moccasins. Tennis shoes. It’s tough running around with those heels. It’s crazy hard on my feet!”
To stay in shape, she’s big in yoga. “We could to a travel blog on yoga studios,” she said. “Some are fantastic. Some are awful. Yoga is such a great balance between exercise and serenity. Our industry is always so crazy and so fast paced. Go go go! Take an hour and a half to really center yourself, take a moment just to breath.”
DeGarmo recently was a passenger in a car accident, caught in a nine-car pile up. “I had a good case of whiplash and muscle spasms,” she said. “Thank goodness for pain medicine! We were the final domino. I heard the tires screeching, saw a semi clip a little Honda. I turned to cast members and said, ‘We’re about to be…’ ”
“I could laugh now,” she said. “At the moment, it was a little intense. Everyone had to go to a chiropractor.”
She got to visit Atlanta once this year for a week to take care of her mom’s house. She also attended a Hawks game. And she filmed a “Wyatt Earp” film two months ago with Val Kilmer.
“It was amazing,” she said. “I got to ride horses and my character dies.” She’s one of the flashback love interests to Wyatt Earp. “I got to kiss a cute boy,” she added. She had to readjust her acting. “In the theater, you’re trying to portray emotions to the grandma in the back row. Here, it’s almost mentally acting more than physical acting. Your eyes betray so much more than your body. I had someone work with me on it. It was a good leaning experience. I had a really good time.”
Post “9 to 5,” she said she has a job booked in Los Angeles but can’t say yet. Then she is planning to “go with the flow.”
The flow has worked for Diana. Over the years since “Idol,” she has had steady work in theater, with a few breaks in between to do “Gone Country” on CMT and record songs in her current town of Nashville as well as Los Angeles.
As for “Idol,” she watched snatches of it when she could. She already knew Paul MacDonald from Nashville. “We’ve crossed paths,” she said. “We worked with similar people. He’s such a good guy, a really amazing performer.”
DeGarmo said in this day and age, you have to be a “quadruple threat” to be a bonafide artist – acting, singing, dancing, et. al. “I like to say I can do it all!” she said.
She is also buds with Bo Bice. “He’s like my brother. I just love him to bits. He and his wife are so sweet. We’ve done a lot of things together the past few years.”

Nice interview with Diana, thanks for posting. I’m glad she’s doing well.
The new job she referred to was announced last week, I think before this interview. Diana’s reprising her role as Penny in the Hollywood Bowl production of Hairspray. A musical is done over a summer weekend each year at The Hollywood Bowl in LA and is cast with all celebrities. She’s doing it with Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur from the original cast, Nick Jonas, Drew Carey, John Stamos, Corbin Bleu, Darlene Love, etc. http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/press/press-release/index.cfm?id=2649

Thanks for the interview, Rodney. You’ve made Branch Loveless very happy. Looking forward to seeing her in the film…and it’s a western so hubby won’t complain!
There’s gotta be a better picture of her than that one.

I didn’t get a lot of clear closeup photos of Diana from that night at the Ga. Music Hall of Fame. That was the best shot I had. And thanks Chris for that update. Sounds like a really fun one off. So she’ll have her summer open to pick her shots.

She’s working on an album with Ace Young. It’s a country album but he has written some songs with her and is producing it via his company, Herrick Music. She’ll probably go back to Nashville after Hairspray in August and start doing acoustic shows again.

Here’s Diana on Good Day LA last week. She looks like she’s lost a lot of weight.

Morning!
Like we’ve seen often, Diana is part of a friendly and supportive Idol alumni group.
Checked out The Voice on my DVR last night. I had a couple that I hadn’t seen yet. I really like Javier Colon. I also liked the bald rocker(male) The little 16 year old girl who is really shy has an interesting voice with unique phrasing. The last show, I would have picked Cherie over Lily(Rodney had the right girls, just switched their names)but I wasn’t very impressed with any of the singers.
I actually had more favorites during this past season of Idol than I do on The Voice.

Morning, everyone. Good to see our “home town” girl doing so well. (I drive by her former high school twice each day on my way to/from work.)
Diana may be the most versatile Idol alum. If she’s not… there’s an old saying that she “may not be in a class by” herself. “But it doesn’t take long to call the roll.”

Ah, yes. Branch is very happy and content now. Thanks for the Diana D. fix, Rodney. Glad to see she is staying busy with different projects. Looking forward to the movie and also some new music whenever she gets around to it.
So, thanks Rodney. Or did I already say that?
Ahh, Diana!

Gotta head out for a bit. I’m hosting another meeting of the “Council of Legendary Figures” at the super secret, undisclosed, highly secure but oh-so-comfy bunker. Luckily, the current construction won’t disrupt the proceedings (what with the soundproofing and all.)

As for Diana’s red dress, obviously the costumer who festooned Idol-Lauren with one hideous piece of garment after another, has a side job. Ans he/she doesn’t favor Georgia singers.

Good Morning Fellow Bloggers!!!
Great report on Diana, Rodney. However, I agree that a better picture is floating around somewhere.
On the previous thread, Carla Roqs wanted to know if Branch Loveless and I were the same person. To answer her question, No we aren’t. I have no idea why she thought that we were. Maybe she will appear here and tell why she did think we were the one and same.
Also, welcome Carla and Branch to our blog family.

Branch…would it be all right to reveal your previous identity just once to the blogsters who don’t know realize who you are yet?

For the blogsters who haven’t figured it out yet Branch Loveless is wreckedpizza. One of the hints is a devotion to Diana. another is a penchant for odd screen names.

Sure, Deirdre…if you can remember what it was; I seem to have forgotten. Still I want to thank Nana for the welcome. That is a nice thing to do even though we are not the same person. I doubt I could ever be a high-quality person like Nana!
(now back to the Diana pics…thanks Queen D.)

BL, being the southern lady that I am, I was extending the southern hospitality. I wondered where WP had gotten off to. Now, I know. Glad to know that you didn’t fall off the face of the earth.

I’m only allowed to post AP photos or whatever I have in my library (which are not that great). AP really has no decent shots of Diana in its recent library. I can’t post Getty Images or stuff from other photo agencies. We’re not licensed to do so.
