Scotty McCreery gets $250K for winning plus merch sales

Because Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina are both minors, a court in California had to approve the contracts. They also are made public, according to the Associated Press.

So we learned that Scotty is guaranteed $250,000 with an album. Lauren gets a guaranteed $87,500 and another $87,500 for an album. “Idol”-affiliated labels have picked up the winner and runner up every single year and I don’t expect that to change this year.

Interestingly enough, Jordin Sparks four years ago (also a minor) received MORE money than Scotty: $360,000 for winning and a first album.  Scotty and Lauren both get merchandise deals that should net them more cash, too. Scotty gets at least $50,000 and Alaina, $40,000. Past winners have gotten at least $100,000.

David Archuleta was paid out $310,000 season eight.

So, if anything, “Idol” has gotten cheaper. But the problem is albums are not selling as much as they used to so you can see why “Idol” has gotten stingier on that front.

I’m on semi-vacation today visiting my parents so I skipped the press conferences with Lauren and Scotty. Sorry ’bout that. I will be completely off my computer tomorrow so hopefully my items today will tide you over til Memorial Day. (I plan to post my Kara DioGuardi interview Monday, then Diana DeGarmo Tuesday.)

I can understand why Idol has pulled back, but at the same time have they seen a drop in what they take in? How about sharing a bit more with the contestants?

Hopefully Scotty and Lauren know how to handle money.

Have a great time off Rodney, looking forward to sneaking in and reading about Kara and Diana.

KC, this seasons true Idol winner is: Jennifer Lopez. Declared the most beautiful woman of the year, top selling songs due to major Idol exposure, she even gets the hubby in on the act.

Granted, when declaring a winner I’m ignoring the extra loot the companies behind Idol made by extending the shows past one hour, while lowering their contestant and other costs. Bank!

I doubt very seriously that Scotty, a former grocery store employee, and Lauren, a former Cici’s Pizza worker, will care that Jordin and David made more than them. When I was 16 I would have thought I’d died and gone to heaven if I had won just $5,000. I just hope the money they will soon earn will be invested wisely.

They should be forced to put at least half of that money into a trust until they turn 25. That money is going to be gone in no time by the time Scotty and Lauren finish buying the types of goofy things teens believe they just have to have and everyone else finishes holding their hands out.

Finally watched Tuesday and Wednesday tonight. All I can say is that after the talk on the threads about Scotty and Lauren, I watched the end REAL close. The way she grabbed and kissed on him after the confetti (at the end of the credits) was teen love at its finest. They’re cute and if they don’t do anything stupid; who knows. :)

Rodney, thanks for a great job this year. (Queen) Deirdre, K&CF, Mercedes JT Rickster SamA and all, thanks for allowing me to join your fun, even though I was pretty absent the last month.

When you look at all the Star Power coming through Idol on the guest slots, mentoring slots, the Celebrity Judges, Seacrest, etc. – you can see that the design of the show is really mostly a prop to pimp the already known and famous in the music industry. The show helps them stay at the top by more exposure, helping them sell albums, downloads and tour tickets.

Fame is a monster (Lady GaGa) that sells stuff. If you want some help to stay on top as a Pop Label with your stable of Hotties and Hunks, you are wise to get into the good graces of Idol Producers.

If you have read some of the contracts auditioners sign in order to even just “try-out” and audition – it will give a quick lesson in how deep the hook is – in your future success. Additional contracts will be added for album production. E19 will take the gamble along with the expenses to promote and distribute the first album, so if it flops, at least the winner, and/or those signed, will get their gauranteed money.

But, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The top 11 Idols are all making way much more on the tour, than they would be in a weekend band somewhere. And after, a little fame as a finalist or winner on Idol is a big plus.

Come on….$250 aint that much after taxes. okay…it’ll buy you a starter home and some furnishings but it ain’t a Donald Trump or Sarah Palin lifestyle. Fortunately…Scotty is a hellofamoral worth more than either of those spoiled losers…..

Leave it to someone named Winnie to pooh, pooh another blogger’s comment!! :8

Hey, Ben, don’t go anywhere. RH keeps the blog going year ’round! (Though we do occasionally get trolls like whatshername from 1:38-1:44.)

Some of their money will go to pay the sales tax on whatever Ford vehicle they pick out.

I’m guessing Scotty goes with an F-150 double cab and Lauren picks a Focus. (My bet is her parent’s will counsel her on her choice.)

And had Haley won, her choice would undoubtedly have been a Cobra convertible! 8)

Winnie, develop a sense of humor. If you look back a couple of threads, you’ll see that our blog-master thanks us every year for participating and we thank him back…weird, I know. Imagine people on a blog being polite!

And the Queen thing is a joke…..I’ve just been around here longer than many of the others…and I’m also an official, yet unofficial, moderator. Rodney mostly lets me boss everyone around to keep me happy! ;-)

Looking at old threads since power outage prevented me from checking what’ was going on here…
warmed by all the thanks back and forth and then someone like Winnie comes along… go back to your cave and choke on your honey! (Sorry, I usually don’t get abusive, but in this case -)

For Sam-A – thinking of you today, and hope all goes well, and I promise a report on “Super 8″ when it arrives. Meanwhile, as for “Hangover II”, it’s the EXACT same movie as “Hangover I”, with the EXACT same people, even Mike Tyson, only set in Bangkok. Remember how funny the first movie was? If you go, you’ll be amazed at how slow, boring and plot-holey the second one is. The only good thing I can say about “Hangover II” is that it’s not in 3-D.

Plus, the physical mayhem of “HI” – pulled tooth, beatings – was reparable. Not so in “H-II”. Facial tattoo a la Tyson is not amusing, nor is chopping off a child’s finger and expecting laughs from it.

I’d say another key factor is the chosen, or target, market of both these contestants – country – is more limited than the wider pop appeal of previous winners.
