My annual thank you note to my readers

I started my first thank you note in 2005 the morning after Carrie Underwood had defeated Bo Bice. (And no, her victory was not preordained. I honestly thought Bo had a shot.) I was in a hotel room in Birmingham, Ala. I was just amazed I even had readers at the time. I don’t think many of the regulars today were around back then. I also knew that most folks who were regular readers during the season would disappear off season.

Nonetheless, I decided at the time to keep the blog alive even during the off time. I figure there was always something happening “Idol” related most any day. There was the “Idols Live” tour and all the alums to track. There were chart singles to track, CD sales (yes, those still mattered back then) and the latest gossip about Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. And a few of you stuck around off season. Very few. Believe me, there were days I was lucky to get 7 or 8 comments in July. Lara, I recall, was one of the few.

But then season 5 happened and traffic exploded. I still think my biggest month ever was in May, 2006, the month that Chris Daughtry was eliminated and Taylor Hicks beat Katharine McPhee.  And the “Idol” blog kept chugging along. Traffic actually slipped off as viewership fell through 2009. We survived Flats, who triggered a splinter group. I tried an experimental software for a year that didn’t work out. We then moved to Wordpress. And last year, for logical and not-so-logical reasons, traffic zoomed more than 60 percent year over year despite the fact it was not a good year for “Idol.” Then this year, we’ve managed to grow traffic yet again.

Thank you all for sticking with me. I readily admit I can’t be as dedicated to this blog as MJ is to hers. I have another blog to tend to as well. As a result, I have to give a primo shout out to my key blog contributor: Deirdre. She’s been my rock for the past few years, playing unofficial moderator since I’m not always around. We’ve had an incredibly civil, calm year, haven’t we, Deirdre? I have to give you some of the credit. This blog wouldn’t be half as vibrant without you.

Sure, the Cover it Live portion isn’t Deirdre’s cup o’ tea, but there were plenty of others who enjoyed the ADD chat function for a second year. It’s been a lot more fun this year since I actually like most of the top 13. Season 9 for me will always be about “pants on the ground” dude, Crystal Bowersox and everybody else.

Anyway, JTesla, you are another loyalist, frequently first to comment whenever I post anything.  I deeply appreciate your support. Kellie & Carrie Fan, thanks for joining me this past year at the Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson concerts! Woodpappy -you’ve stuck it out with me pretty much as long as anybody, eh? Rickster – you are always there with a pointed jab or two. This blog always needs that. And Neg? How can we live without your commentary?

Others to thank: Sam-A, Mercedes S, Harriett, Mo Schreibman,  Seth T, Nutmeg, Carrie, newcomer Greg, jj, Nana, Pitchy, KPH, Andi, RxDawg, Cadre, JD, old_skool, Highlander, Cammi317, Weary Traveler, somebody else, G, notmzbehavin, ATL1000, occasional, Honu.

This is by no means a complete list. I apologize in advance for missing anybody.

For those who only comment during the regular season, feel free to sit back and join us again in January. For the others, I’m going to keep covering “The Voice” and when the fall comes around “X Factor.” And as the summer goes along, there will be tour and audition coverage as well as anything else “Idol” related. Will J. Lo and Steven Tyler stick around? Is Randy done? Who will be the biggest star from season 10? The Idol Industrial Machine never ends!

Bottom line: you readers are who keep me employed. I am humbled by your loyalty. “Idol” has been part of my life for ten years.  This blog is now past the six year mark. It’s now part of my DNA. Again, thank you all.

Rodney, it’s we who should thank you for supplying us with this entertaining excercise.
I’m proud to be mentioned … yet HONU got TWO shoutouts!
Thanks for keeping blog going in off-season as well.
To me this blog is a calm away from the daily storm that is life.
Until next, then!

Hey Rodney, thank you for the mention. I love this blog and read it before my morning e-mails. I don’t have as much to say as some of the others, but I’m always here. I appreciate your work, your opinions, and all the interesting info on our past and present idols. Like Mercedes said it is also my calm away from the daily stresses in life.

Back at the end of 2004, my dad died and about the time season 4 was starting on Idol, my mom moved in with me. That moved changed my life in drastic ways. I was forced into early retirement to care for my mother and found myself missing the interaction I had had with my colleagues every day.

I had watched American Idol since Mr Atlanta called me from school and told me about this great show that I’d really enjoy…that was the first Idol season and I was so impressed with Kelly Clarkson that I stayed for season 2.

While my mom napped one day, I stumbled on Rodney’s blog…and being the argumentative person y’all know I am, immediately jumped down someone’s throat for a comment she made with which I totally disagreed(big surprise, I know)

From then on I was hooked and my lonely life, caring for my mother, took on a brighter outlook.

So Rodney, you need a special thanks for saving my sanity, for opening a door to the world for me again. I’m not sure any other blog could have done that and I want you to know that I give you my heartfelt thanks for nearly six years of blogging plus a really fun phone relationship.

I do have one little complaint however. I’m still waiting for that “unofficial moderator” title to become official. Even though this year was remarkably free of drive-bys and rudeness… I want more
power!!!!!! ;-)

And to my fellow blogsters: Back in the olden days it was just linny, Lara and I along with a whole different group of people who have since moved on.

The absolute BEST thing about this blog is the people who inhabit it. If I start naming names it will take forever so, just let me say that it’s you folks(more than Idol) who keep me here. I’ve learned so much about different ways of life, about respecting different opinions, about arguing in as friendly a way as possible, about how good most people are, about other parts of Georgia…and Oregon ;-) , and about the basic decency of people who understand that, just because we aren’t all of the same politics or religion, or race, or preference, we are friends..in a truly unique and wonderful way.

I respect each and every one of you, those still here and those who have left to find other ways to entertain themselves…and , I hope, even when I’m pissing you off, which I’m pretty sure I do fairly regularly, that you’ll continue to hang around, even for just a little while to say hello!

@Mercedes: Would you believe that I was considering the Queen as a person and not as her title? *cough* I’m going to stick with that, anyway. At least I didn’t have to look up the list.

I have to second what Deirdre said in her last two paragraphs (11:21). We do have a great group of bloggers here, who are willing and able to step off the marked path for a bit, only to come rushing back to task when there is some relevant Idol news.

Just as a warning, I’ll be on vacation next week. Going to Kansas, so posts by me after Saturday will be few and far between.

Rodney, thanks for the shout out! I didn’t know you cared…lol ;-) I’ve enjoyed reading the blog for the last 3-4 years, but rarely posted until this year. Even with all the attempted manipulation from the producers this year (the doctor on Tuesday…ugh!), the complete and utter lack of any “judging” by the judges, and the voting off of my favorites…it was a much more enjoyable season this year than last. The finale gets an A+ (even if Beyonce’s second song was really bad) from me. It had a great mix of music styles and was good tv. It doesn’t quite beat out 2008 with Queen and Kiss, but it was very good!
RH…thanks for all you do to keep the blog going! Can you work on getting the “Dawg” put in the kennel for good during the off season?

Seriously, a great job as always and I look forward to posts on “The Voice” and “X Factor”.

And a sad goodbye to JTesla who earlier stated this was his last year to watch “Idol”. We shall miss your viewership, friend. You are still gonna visit this blog, correct?

JTesla

May 26th, 2011
12:32 pm

Well, I’m now torn. It’s silly, but one small thing that will get me back into it next year is that they are having auditions in Portland next year. So now I have to watch that show at least… I don’t know. I just don’t know.

At the end of the last two years I have felt like I was over Idol and that I had enough. This season I had that same feeling during some of the audition shows (usually my favorite) and I also felt it during some of the top 10. However, from the top 5 on (after I called my departure) I’ve been wanting more, and even with the boring Tuesday show, I’m here wanting more.

Regardless of how much Idol I watch next season, I’m not going anywhere. I have to keep up on past Idols, and I at least have to catch X-Factor. If they change the Idol judging panel they might get me to watch the whole season. Like all my other predictions this season, perhaps the prediction of my being over Idol was completely incorrect. Except, I did call Lauren at #2, that’s the only thing I got right this season. That’s it. One correct prediction, ignoring my saying “Stefano will be eliminated” for about 10 weeks and finally getting it right.

Re The other Queen and the presidents… there was a cute email going around with QE2 photographed with all the US presidents she had met during her reign (until Obama, but now that has been taken care of) and i assumed that was how you were supposed to count the presidents.

For myself it was Mr. Ho’s hat that first brought my attention to the Idol newspaper column because it is snappy and matches his shirt which separates the men from the other men whose wives dress them still. It is hard to tell from here if anyone else wears hats or if the rest of their attire matches even but there are some very nice persons writing here both the men and the girls and also those it is hard to tell which yet.

JT- glad to hear you are reconsidering. Therefore I shall withdraw my “sad goodbye” and smile again.

As for this season of “Idol”, I am glad Scotty won because that kept my “fave” losing streak intact.
Since I started watching in earnest in season 3 (Diana!), my personal choice has never won the title.
Guess I’ll have to be satisfied with my runner-ups (Diana, Bo, Lauren). Especially since a female is usually my favorite (Bo the exception) and we all now know that a female will never win again! Pfft!

Deirdre

Thank you, Mo…I think.

JT. Happy to hear you are sticking with us whether Idol grabs you again next year or not. We didn’t get to sit on the porch eating popcorn much this year but all we need is another polarizing contestant like Adam to get us back to our favorite spot!

And there’s still The Voice to make fun of and X Factor starting in September….I will watch despite the fact that I already know Simon and Paula together again is just going to irritate me.

Deirdre

OK, time to list our personal choices from each season(thanks Branch )

Season 1: Kelly
Season 2: Clay(although I loved Ruben)
Season 3: Diana(although I knew Fantasia would win)
Season 4: Carrie(although I loved Bo….and Constantine to she said very quietly
Season 5: Chris Daughtry…loved Kat AND Taylor)
Season 6: Melinda Doolittle…ended up voting for Blake because I couldn’t remember the girl and still can’t.
Season 7: Michael Johns, then David Cook
Season 8. Adam Lambert
Season 9: Crystal Bowersox
Season 10: James

For me:

Season 1: didn’t watch
Season 2: didn’t watch enough to care
Season 3: didn’t watch enough to care
Season 4: Lindsey Cardinale, after that Carrie Underwood
Season 5: Chris Daughtry, followed by Kat.
Season 6: Melinda Doolittle followed by Blake Lewis
Season 7: David Cook, but I was very fond of Syesha Mercado. I won’t admit to being fond of Ramiele Malubay early on… please don’t check the archives on that one.
Season 8: Allison Iraheta followed by Adam Lambert
Season 9: Siobhan followed by Crystal.
Season 10: Ashthon was an early favorite, but I picked Casey to win it. Later in the season Haley was my choice.

Greg

Deirdre, Melinda was my favorite in Season 6 as well. I was so upset when she was voted off that year. She is still in my top 10 moments on AI ever with her version of “My Funny Valentine”.

You’re welcome, Deirdre. Here is my list of personal choices who couldn’t quite make it to the top:

Season 1: didn’t watch, must’ve been really busy that year. But I love Kelly now!
Season 2: watched only sporadically. Sorry.
Season 3: Diana, of course.
Season 4: Bo; started with Lindsey Cardinale but she was gone at #12!
Season 5: Chris D.
Season 6: Haley Scarnato…..what?
Season 7: Carly Smithson.
Season 8: Alison; liked Gokey as well.
Season 9: Katie Stevens.
Season 10: Lauren, of course.

No winners for me. Guess I am not in it to win it, huh?

P.S. Season 6 winner? Jordin Sparks.

Melinda should have won hands down in season six. My favorite of hers that season was Trouble Is A Woman. She rocked the house with that one. It was such a shame she didn’t win especially since I heard so many stupid comments about her looks as the reason people wouldnt vote for her. I was extremely busy yesterday and didn’t have time to check in with y’all. SO, Rodney, really, thanking me for joining you at the Carrie and Kelly concerts? Come on, like that’s torture?! ;) I always enjoy chatting Idol and speculating about the numbers. On a serious note, thanks for the playground, the Idol scoop, and being a really cool host. The addition of CoverItLive last year is what helped me get through such a lackluster season.

D, you pretty much summarized the magic of the blog. Personally, I get to chat with folks I probably wouldn’t otherwise. That is what makes this blog such a fun place to be. We share thoughts and opinions and while I don’t always give opinions on politics and religion, I do respect and appreciate all the different perspectives.

In the honest of disclosure, I came on the blog as KellyFan right before the Great Divide. It was a sad time for the blog, but everyone moved to where they felt more comfortable.

To those who’ve joined us this year, I hope you’ve enjoyed being a part of the blog and stick around. I also think that we do a pretty good job of welcoming new people into the fold. This is a public blog, I get that. We just have no patience for bull crap and trolling. :)

So, see y’all on the next thread!
