Scotty McCreery, the putative front runner for months, took home the 10th “American Idol” crown Wednesday night, the first time a male country singer has taken home the prize.

He beat fellow teen and Rossville, GA resident Lauren Alaina, who gave it her all Tuesday but couldn’t close the gap.

Scotty had an aw-shucks appeal from day one but also a steely confidence. Some pinned him as a one-trick pony with his deep bass voice but he possesses natural stage presence and better-than-expected vocal range once he broke out of his Josh Turner mode.

The results came after two mostly very fun hours of medleys, guest stars and comedy. The highlights were numerous. Jack Black goofing around with Casey Abrams. J. Lo heating up the stage with her hubby Marc Anthony. Lady Gaga going to “The Edge of Glory.” The off-the-wall Tom Jones medley. Jacob Lusk hitting notes with Gladys Knight and Kirk Franklin. Haley Reinhart dueting with the legendary Tony Bennett. Atlanta getting love with TLC. The skit where James Durbin and Casey mock argue over whose departure was more shocking, then Pia Toscano popping up with a crown and sash reading “Most shocking.” Carrie Underwood working her hit “Before He Cheats” with Lauren. Scotty matching Tim McGraw with “Live Like You’re Dying.”

Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez melt the stage.

Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez melt the stage.

Not everything went great. That second Beyonce song? Superfluous. Was there a melody in there?

Nigel Lythgoe, you earned your keep this year! This almost makes up for that nightmare called season 9!

This has made my night…Scottie had something you can’t manufacture charisma…It came so naturally to him…and his low silky voice was great. I’ve enjoyed his singiong from the first week.
I know he will have a long career. Great Job Scottie…

I am not sure what everyone heard.. but there was NOTHING good about Scottys singing. A former idol just said on our local news here in dalton ga, that the “little girl” vote is where winners are made in Idol. well, there and the cougar vote…

Scotty WILL BE good in the future, but he needs a super good vocal coach, and lots of stage presence training. Notice that even LAUREN sang harmony with Carrie, while Scotty stuck to simply lead solos… that is a lack of ABILITY to sing harmony….. LACK OF ABILITY… anyway…. On to the voice and americas got talent.

Several changes were made to the show content after Lauren’s vocal chords got tweaked. A couple of performances got changed (group numbers) and a planned duet with Scotty & Lauren was axed. They’re saving her voice for the tour (and any prospective recording of someone signs her).
No word on any contracts for her yet.

DS, there were plenty more people than just “tweens” & “little girl” vote for Scotty. I know many people of all ages voting for him.

I have a hard time believing anyone that still uses the term “western” to describe country music is a big lover of the music. Western has not been used to describe the music in many years.

Scotty sounded better than Tim McGraw which is saying something. I wish Lauren would have taken it home, but she will also do well. There have been some great #2s (Aiken, McPhee), but she is the best and will have a great career. Regarding the show, it was awesome. Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and U2 (minus 2). I wonder if the younger people watching realize U2 is bigger than all the artist put together.

maybe they’ll be the new “Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash” in country music — i always said they should stick together to perform, honest i did! just look way back at my posts!!!

Now that was an entertaining show.

You know, I never really thought too much of Scotty, but after his duet with Tim McGraw I was really impressed. He might have a decent career in county after all.

The top 13 contestants really impressed me. Even Paul and the earlier black girl whose name escapes me. I’ve never heard them sound so solid.

Gaga and Beyonce are some singers man…. they both have such flawless voices.

Jack Black is so awesome.

Haley is so awesome. I really think we’ll hear some more from her.

How funny is it that off key Lee was never even mentioned. In fact, he was barely seen once in the background when Ryan was talking. What a hack. Who the hell voted for that guy over Crystal? I still can’t shake that…

Neither Lauren nor Scotty WON the Idol competition in any meaningful sense of the word.

Certainly they have talent, but they were simply outperformed every week by even more talented contestants.

not going to do like the other NW Georgia folks and make excuses – I stuck my neck out and said she would win – even prodded you guys into wondered what you would do if she did win. She didn’t. In this contest, she came up second – no excuses, the very same voting process kept her in the show a couple of times, so blaming the voting process is wrong. It was a contest and Lauren was the first loser. She’ll do OK, considering a lot of 2nd placers have been pretty successful! Good job, good luck!

You people are so hilarious. Your fav did not win. That is the way it goes in this type of competition. Sometimes your fav wins, sometimes they don’t. That does not mean the winners are bad and will not make it. It does not mean the winner is not talented because you did not like them. Be happy for the winner. Them winning does not have any impact on you whatsoever. If you don’t like their music, I promise, you will not be forced to go out and buy their music. Their music will not be forcibly downloaded to you mp3 player.

I for one think that Scotty (& Lauren too) will have good careers in country. If Taylor Swift can be a superstar with her average voice, Scotty will definately have that opportunity. There is definately a spot for a teen male in country music.

One of the hottest up and comers in country now, Easton Corbin, sounds just like George Strait.

Be happy, sit back and see what happens, you just might be surprised.

Scotty is a nice guy but he isn’t a good singer. Lauren with tweaked vocal chords whipped his AZZ! The 9, 10 and 60 year old females got Scotty the season 10 title…it wasn’t talent. He sounded awful all night long. I’m glad Lauren didn’t win because now, she can have a great future and career in the music buisness. AI holds most winners back. Scotty is 17. When did that stop being a teen?

I picked the someone else choice on the poll. I like both the kids a lot but many of you already know my stance on Idol going younger. Lauren, as talented as she is< is so obviously not ready for all this attention that it breaks my heart to watch her. Scotty is a little more mature but this is overwhelming him as well.

Scotty a one trick pony? If so, what a trick! There are some pretty successful and wealthy country stars with the same one trick. He IS America’s Idol, because the majority of people voted for him – I suspect by a big margin. If you don’t like it, get over it. Will never watch again? You think anyone will miss you.? By that criteria, why has ANYONE watched since Taylor Hicks won?

Sad that Lauren didn’t get the title, but I do believe her chances for a career are much greater than Scotty’s. And I agree with those above, it appears our little GA girl and Scotty are boy/girl friends. Cute couple.

As much as I don’t like Haley, when she sings in the genre her voice was made for, ie jazz/blues, she sounds good. But in Pop/Rock – no way.

Marc A looks like an anorexic drowned rat, and a very oily JLo, tossing her wet hair in her face continually and crawling all over him was kinda nauseating, at least for me. She’s a pretty lady (most beautiful – no way), what could she possibly see in this skanky tiny dude, who left a wife and baby to jump on her?

Beyonce is beautiful, but these “sexy” humping performances and lousy songs do her no favors, except maybe with the 13 to 23 year old boy crowd.

Tom Jones still sounds pretty good, but can’t do the highs, lows and extended notes anymore. In his prime, his voice would have blown everyone else off that stage (but performance-wise, he was kinda skanky too).

Last night’s finale was a huge disappointment – performance-wise.

Whoever chose the songs for the group sings should be ashamed. Except for the Tom Jones medley, they were horrible.

I still don’t get Lady GaGa. She’s got a better voice than I realized… but I thought her performance ranked higher on the “can you do that on TV” meter than the AMA performance by “The guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, Kris, the guy who actually won?)”

Horribly inappropriate.

Agree that the “most shocking” featurette was the funniest of the night.

Durbin/Judas Priest: Just okay.
Casey/Jack Black: meh
Jacob/et.al.: seriously??
J-Lo/Marc: Why does J-Lo feel like she needs to dress like a high-priced Tijuana hooker?
Haley/Tony: Actually… one of the better ones of the night
Beyonce’: She’s got a better voice than I realized. But that song was a mess.
Scotty/Tim: Never been a big McGraw fan. Liked Scotty better
Lauren/Carrie: Should put to rest all those Lauren/Carrie comparisons. Carrie schooled that teen!

Noticed a whole lotta love between Scotty & Lauren. He hugged her and say “I love ya, babe.” She planted several kisses on his check on multiple occasions.

Odds on Ford vehicles:

Scotty: F-150 Pickup truck (2-1)
Lauren: Mustang Convertible (3-2)

Observations and opinions:

Stefano should be singing the kind of songs Marc Anthony sang. Hate to put Stefano in a “box” like that. But he is way younger, much better looking than Anthony. I think Stefano is trying to be something he isn’t and can’t be, what with singing Usher songs and trying to move like him.

Jacob Lusk needs to sing with the girl Idols, not the guys, considering how he moves like them.

“Dream On” is one of the all time great songs. Perfect song to be performed on the Finale. If you have not yet seen a live version posted on YouTube, please do so. It is amazing! I never get tired of hearing this song.

They need to STOP brining out 85-year-old legends to perform, before somebody has a heart attack before a live tv audience.

Casey is really just pitiful. His calling may be to WRITE music instead of trying to perform and be funny.

That bit with GAGA wrapping her legs around the guy laying on top was way too explicit and I didn’t appreciate the “butt-shots” either. JLo looked like she’d developed rabies and was running amok in the Marc A number. Too much. And believe me I am no prude – can keep up with any sailor when provoked (which doesn’t take much).

I love Lauren and would have been happy to see her win, but I felt Scotty deserved to win it. He apparently finished 1st or close to 1st in voting every single week. Would have been a travesty for him to lose his spot on the very last night. Honestly, neither of them needed to win it. They are both going to be superstars. I am thrilled though for Scotty. He deserved to win. :)

Yeah, Rickster, the “Most Shocking” video was the funniest gag of the night but the funniest line came from Niaima regarding Scottie and Laurens’ age – “They both still have Similac on their breath!”

Quiz time for all the Idol worshippers:
I know you can name all of the Idol winners. Can you also name all the Presidents that the USA has had during the time of Queen Elizabeth II? (Hint: Start back at WW2)

RxDawg said “The top 13 contestants really impressed me. Even Paul and the earlier black girl whose name escapes me. I’ve never heard them sound so solid.” Amazing what a little vocal rest can do, I think. By the time we hit top 13, most of the contestants are already hoarse. Not cool.

I’m relieved that this is all over. I won’t ever hear Scotty sing again until they trot him out once a season for a while on AI. He’ll be played only on stations to which I don’t listen. Great for him, great for me.

Did you hear that Cheryl Cole is out of X-Factor and “co-host” Nicole Scherzinger is taking her place as a judge? Makes me wonder if they brought Nicole in originally because they were worried about Cole.

If I have a prayer for AI 11, it is this: please, dear Lord, do not let both finalists be country singers. Amen.

@Jeopardy: FDR, Truman, Ike, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, Obama. Your point? Oh, I’ll bet it’s some kind of faux-intellectual superiority because we are talking about something you deem frivolous.

As it happens, I’m about a year away from my Ph.D. at Georgia State. Run along now.

Rickster, were you just in a rotten mood when you watched it last night or something? It wasn’t that bad of a final show, especially when compared to the Scotty vs Lauren snooze fest the night before. That show was so boring Idol actually brought in other performers to change it up. They’ve never done that on a night dedicated to the contestants performing. Especially the last 2!

And man, some of you folks are pretty big prudes. Lighten up ok. SEX IS NATURAL. And some folks use it’s idea to entertain. Such is the way of the world.

@ D I picked “the others should of won” too. Idol brings us some great performances and talent. But the voters that vote for idol look for a lot of other things besides musical and vocal talent. I’ll also predict that unless Idol gets in some very untalented and unlikable males for contestants a female will never win again.

A funny thing happened on the way to work this morning. The Elvis Duran Show (105.7) provided their listening audience with a Scotty McCreery “Hick Hop” CD as a stocking stuffer. They played a medley of current hip hop hits (i.e. Black & Yellow, etc.) and had this old white guy with a twang sing the lyrics over the tracks. Too funny!

Oh yeah, they said……”He’s still rep’n country, just a part of the country he’s never been to.” LOL!!!
