Scotty McCreery, the putative front runner for months, took home the 10th “American Idol” crown Wednesday night, the first time a male country singer has taken home the prize.
He beat fellow teen and Rossville, GA resident Lauren Alaina, who gave it her all Tuesday but couldn’t close the gap.
Scotty had an aw-shucks appeal from day one but also a steely confidence. Some pinned him as a one-trick pony with his deep bass voice but he possesses natural stage presence and better-than-expected vocal range once he broke out of his Josh Turner mode.
The results came after two mostly very fun hours of medleys, guest stars and comedy. The highlights were numerous. Jack Black goofing around with Casey Abrams. J. Lo heating up the stage with her hubby Marc Anthony. Lady Gaga going to “The Edge of Glory.” The off-the-wall Tom Jones medley. Jacob Lusk hitting notes with Gladys Knight and Kirk Franklin. Haley Reinhart dueting with the legendary Tony Bennett. Atlanta getting love with TLC. The skit where James Durbin and Casey mock argue over whose departure was more shocking, then Pia Toscano popping up with a crown and sash reading “Most shocking.” Carrie Underwood working her hit “Before He Cheats” with Lauren. Scotty matching Tim McGraw with “Live Like You’re Dying.”
Not everything went great. That second Beyonce song? Superfluous. Was there a melody in there?
Nigel Lythgoe, you earned your keep this year! This almost makes up for that nightmare called season 9!
