The heat is on and none of the top 3 quite hit their marks tonight. Plus, Fox told the producers to stretch nine songs over two hours. That meant more filler than in Joan Rivers‘ cheeks!

We had to suffer through that terrible Beyonce song and her pointless “mentoring.” They aired the original auditions from the three finalists (which actually wasn’t terrible filler.) Ryan Seacrest attempted to joke with Randy like he used to with Simon. Scotty McCreery’s dad sang the opening to that Josh Turner song his son loves so much. Lauren Alaina’s mom said she felt like she aged 20 years. Lauren’s pantyhose ripped. Scotty’s eyes bugged out even more than usual. Haley Reinhart tripped up some stairs and battled a wind machine. The judges jibber jabbered even longer than normal, including five utterances of “beautiful’ from Steven Tyler, four more “beautifuls” from Jennifer Lopez and four “in it to win it” references from Randy Jackson.

Oh, there was some singing, too. I suspect the pressure of having to do three songs, plus the hometown visits and the week-in-week-out vocal wear and tear have ground down the contestants.  They are all looking forward to the finale at this point, win or lose. Scotty struggled a bit hitting some high notes outside his comfort zone. Both Lauren and Haley were breathier than normal.

My favorites: Nothing tonight blew me away. I enjoyed Lauren’s “I Hope You Dance’ and “If I Die Young,” along with Haley’s “What Is and What Will Never Be.” (Nice touch to have her dad play guitar. It gave her an authenticity booster.)

My ranking: 1. Haley “What Is…” 2. Lauren “I Hope You Dance” 3. Lauren “If I Die Young” 4. Scotty’s “Amazed” 5. Lauren’ Wild One” 6. Scotty’s “Are You Gonna…” 7. Haley’s “You Oughta Know” 8. Haley’s “Rhiannon” 9. Scotty’s “She Believes In Me.”

Who will go home: I’m having a hard time with this one. I still think Scotty will make it through based on his fan base, not on his rather tepid performances tonight. I also believe in the vote splitting theory. Haley will sneak through as the only non-country pick. That means my favorite Lauren will unfortunately miss out on the finals. I hope I’m wrong!

The first three: contestant picks

1. Scotty McCreery (”Amazed” Lonestar) – He doesn’t quite give this the emotional edge the original had. It’s a decent facsimile and he shows some upper range but it never quite crescendos.

2. Lauren Alaina (”Wild One” Faith Hill) – It’s fun but her voice is definitely not 100%. She has some vocal control issues that wasn’t as evident in the past.

3. Haley Reinhart (”What Is and What Will Never Be ” Led Zeppelin) – She gets her dad on stage and totally engulfs herself. She trips up the stairs and keeps going. It’s undoubtedly entertaining whether you like her or not.

Next three: Jimmy Iovine’s pick

4. Scotty (”Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” Thompson Square) – This went No. 1 last year on the country chart but the song is kind of ho hum to me. Scotty cheesed it up with his eyebrows and eyes a bit much for me but it wasn’t half bad.

5. Lauren (”If I Die Young” The Band Perry) -I love this song.  She was strong for much of the song but lost herself near the end, then missed some notes near the end in an attempt to compensate.

6. Haley (”Rhiannon” Stevie Nicks) – I’ll remember the wind machine more than the actual performance, which was merely okay. She is no Stevie Nicks.

Final three: judges picks

7. Scotty (”She Believes in Me” Kenny Rogers’)  – This is not one of Kenny’s better tunes. Scotty couldn’t quite reach the emotional levels that Kenny did. I’m not sure he was sold on the song. It felt sort of flat.

8. Lauren (”I Hope You Dance” LeAnn Womack) – Her vocal fatigue may have worked in her favor in this song. The wariness and weariness added some needed pathos.

9. Haley (”You Oughta Know” Alani Morrisette) – Her verses were weak, especially in the lower register. As the judges said, she made up for it a bit in the choruses. It was not quite the capper she was hoping for.

Best Judges Quotes (thin gruel here!)

“I remember I asked you in the middle of the season to use vibratto at the end of the notes. Now you do it all the time… I bet there are a million girls wishing you were singing the song to them.” J Lo to Scotty after “Amazed”

“You chose a song that’s not for the weak of heart. That was crazy vocals. That was one of your best performances EVER. Crazy, crazy!”: Randy to Haley for her Led Zeppelin cover

“There were so many moments I liked it… you came away after you said the spoken line and you basically started laughing. That’s what the zone feels like… will you shave your head for the finale like the first time we saw you?” J. Lo to Scotty after “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not?”

“When you didn’t hit the modulation at the right point, you went back up. That’s what it takes to be a live performer. That was another good song choice by Jimmy Iovine. You are definitely in it to win it.” Randy to Lauren after “If I Die Young.”

“They caught you really beautiful. I thought you’d take it a little further at the end. It was a nice contrast. Very pretty ethereal moment.” J. Lo to Haley about “Rhiannon.”

“I haven’t heard you sing a chorus like that yet. You put me over the top with that.” Tyler to Scotty for “She Believes in Me”

“You gave me goosies from head to toe. That was beautiful, beautiful. (She’s hijacked that word from Tyler!)” – J. Lo for Lauren’s “I Hope You Dance”

“You came on like you owned the Grand o’ Opry. Singing is an extension of who you are. You are at such ease with it. LeAnn is a good friend of mine, too. (Randy said that moments earlier)” – Tyler to Lauren.

“Those were amazing choruses. I love seeing you rocking out. Haley is in it to win it.” – Randy to Haley about her ‘You Oughta Know.”

The judge’s song picks were the WORST! No imagination whatsoever. Of all the great songs throughout music history, they picked three songs that sounded like karaoke bar staples. Scotty and Lauren all sang three “safe” songs — sweet, pretty country-pop songs that weren’t stretches. Haley sang the most difficult songs — taking on Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, and Alanis all in one night?? Wow. I’m sure Scotty will be in the top 2, and between the girls, I think Haley’s more ready for stardom than Lauren. Lauren has some confidence issues that could be a hindrance as she enters the fierce town of Nashville…

I honestly have no clue who will move on to the finals. I hope Scotty and Haley will. I feel that Scotty is a true born country singer who will have a career no matter what. He’s ready even at a young age. He will do better doing things the way he wants, not what anyone else tells him to do. Haley has a unique jazz voice that we’ve never had on the show yet…I don’t think. Lauren reminds of Miley Cyrus, but for some reason I feel like she’s not ready to be declared Idol yet even though I think she has a better voice than Miley, lol. But the way things have been going this year with the voting this year, who knows what will happen. But I love them all!!!! :)

Interesting Cover-it-live polls. Haley wins all three, but is tied for who should go home?

The polls are contradicting themselves. Haley did the best but is most likely to go home? Really? I have a different take on Scotty’s performances. The only one I thought wasn’t outstanding was “She Belives in Me”. That song is too old for him and too old period. For the first time, I can see that he will probably win the title. I usually like Lauren best, poor thing raced through the first song, not showing off her pipes. The only one that made her shine was “I Hope You Dance” and that was not original enough. I didn’t get Haley’s first song, liked but not loved Rhiannon and totally missed her 3rd song. (Daughter decided to try to brush her hair with my round brush. It took me 20 minutes to get it out of her hair, totally destroying my brush in the process. I’m sure I’ll laugh about this later on.)

Wow what a night. Amazingly even I enjoyed Scotty tonight. I thought he did very well on all three songs. Although once again they were “safe” choices, no matter who chose them. Still he was good.
Lauren? Was it just me or was she flat and kind of seemed out of breath most of the time. I just don’t get why the judges don’t give her more critiquing. If it’s a pick between her and Scotty…well he’s got this one sewn up.
Haley? What can I say? No secret I’m a Haley fan, but she outdid herself tonight. There difficult songs, a stage faux pas, and still she came out full force. I loved that her Dad was there to jam with her. She may not make it through this week but it won’t be because she’s not the most talented, most versatile, most entertaining of the three. I’m hoping the country votes will be split between Lauren and Scotty…with one of them on the losing end. I do think Scotty is the more talented of the two so probably be him. I would love a Haley/Scotty final two, or Haley/Lauren final two. Long as Haley’s there I’ll be a happy camper. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Of course if the world comes to an end on Saturday this will all be for naught. Guess we’ll see.
GO HALEY!

I liked the show a bit more than Rodney did. Jimmie picked great songs for all three. The judges? Giving Scotty “She Believes in Me.” Really??? I thought each contestant won a round tonight (in order: Haley, Scotty and Lauren) This makes it tough for the voters but I’m betting that Lauren goes home. She is still a bit shy of where a “star” should be. Scotty owns the stage. And Haley, damn, this girl has grown so much. Someone has worked with her stage and body movements. She still ain’t Beyonce but her movements no longer detract from her excellent vocals. I look forward to her taking Scotty on in the finale.

How can you hold it against Haley when the judges give her a song she isn’t capable of singing!

A record company is never going to say “We know you can’t sing the lower part of the verses, but sing it anyway”.

Jimmy and the judges picking songs is just plain stupid. The singers know what they can sing, let them pick their own songs!

I agree with “Bored”. Terrible song choices by the judges. Don’t think they spent much time on choosing those. If somebody (Jimmy Iovine are you listening?) would only get word to Scotty to do one of Don Williams’ hit songs he would knock it out of the park. He has a low voice like DW. The one I want to hear him do is “Tulsa Time” with the same rhythm and drums DW uses. When I listen to it on DW’s CD I TURN IT WIDE OPEN!!!! Almost had to stop the car and get out and dance one day.

Scotty will be a lock due to female voting. But the judges couldn’t of picked a better song for Lauren with Hope You Dance. But still, Lauren messed up way too much tonight to earn a finale.

A Scotty vs. Lauren finale would be…. BORING. Please do the right thing America.

AboutScotty

Scotty is a nice kid, but he has repeatedly pimped himself to the god-fearing American caste of voters. His choice to stroke the 9/11 connection right after Bin Laden was smoked was a real vulgar pimping of himself to grab the vote of “patriots” and even Randy acted like a numbskull and praised him for this politically calculated song choice. He’s a kid so he can be forgiven, but he is pretty vague and lacking any real distinction. But lots of folks like boring, easily identifiable archetypes to project their own sentimental values upon and Scotty has shown himself more than willing to suck up to them.

Haley absolutely, positively owned the night. Incredible. Scotty was a decent 2nd. And then there’s Lauren – way, way back in the rear view mirror, where you can barely make out her 100lbs of hair extensions and that vomit blue prom dress..

You know, when you think about it, with these 3 it really doesn’t matter who wins. They will all 3 do the same thing and have the same amount of success they would have had anyway. Some studio execs in Nashville are already “licking their chops” over Scotty and Lauren, and have things lined up for them already. I know of one in particular who is looking at Scotty as “Mr. Taylor Swift” and has the money for a big push right off the bat. Lauren is somewhat of a “sleeper”. I predict with a little weight loss and a little more experience she could be another Carrie Underwood. And, of course with Haley she has what it takes with her voice, her dad’s musical expertise, and some pop execs backings to make it big also. So, the winner actually only gets a “trophy and bragging rights”.

I see Tom. He very obviously made a completely calculated appropriation of political news on the assassination of the world’s leading terrorist a decade in the making and you get all teary eyed when it rightly stated that is a deliberate attempt to get votes? Get a clue. What is not particularly nice is when people like you try to flip a rationale argument and infer that somebody stating the obvious is a bad person. Did I say Scotty is bad? No, READ. I said he is a nice kid and can be forgiven. But he did what he did and it was trashy. Got reading comprehension problems? Sorry you can’t handle a little dose of the truth. I’m sick of entertainers sucking up to the Red, White and Blue. It’s our country, but doesn’t mean it has to be sold off for the highest ticket prices. Deal with it.

I’ve been thinking for weeks that Scotty was the one to beat, but Haley is the one who has really turned it up these last few weeks. She is finishing strong. Very strong.

“AboutScotty” ever think that maybe he is really just ultra patriotic? Considering his upbringing and the values he’s displayed on the show, it’s not too difficult to see that his song choice was not motivated by the idea of getting votes, but by something that he honestly believes in. Heck, people like Scotty tend to view themselves as being in a minority, and the last thing he thought he’d get is votes. I’m sure he was willing to be a martyr for something he believes strongly in.

I hope you’re wrong! Scotty is a shoe-in, but I’d really like to see him go up against Haley, not Lauren. We don’t need two country singers in the finals, and Scotty is way better than Lauren. Haley had her best night ever (totally blew me away), and Lauren was just boring, boring, boring. She’s a Carrie Underwood wannabe, but not nearly as good. Unfortunately, it will probably be Scotty and Lauren, with Scotty winning the whole shebang. I’m from Durham, NC, so I’ve been rooting for native son Scotty to make the final – I just thought it would be with James! Who should have won!

I was a huge Lauren fan, but I think her IHYD was plastic because of her lack of life experience to carry the song like Lee Ann Womack does. Haley is great all around. Scotty should go home, just hoping.

AboutScotty

May 19th, 2011
12:35 am

JTesla, yes he is ultrapatriotic and he does wear his upbringing on his sleeve. Like I said, he’s a kid, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be different in 10 years, so you’re pretty much correct in what you’re saying minus the part about making such a calculated choice. He sang about 9/11 the week of Bin Laden’s death. I’m glad the guy was finally nailed, but this is a singing competition, not a morality contest and he chose to capitalize on it. I don’t doubt he meant it, but it was gross and you can easily see he can simultaneously be sincerely patriotic and pandering to a section of the public on a moral and political level. I’ve only watched this show one prior season, but you and I know the Southern vote has overwhelmed in the past, but that is perhaps changing a bit. How else do you explain a total non-entity wining over that Lambert kid? You never hear about him on the show, because he was really weak and should have never won. I’m not saying Lambert is a great artist, but he was vastly more talented and compelling. People vote according to agenda as much as talent and Scotty has played up this more than you care to admit. Still, I like him well enough. He’s a nice kid, but he’s boring too. He’s a decent singer, but nothing particularly great. He appeals to some just like the others do. I’m not lobbying for anyone. Just pointing out what people are afraid to hear and I’d been thinking about it since he pulled that stunt and decided to chime in. I found it pretty distasteful and I think he was misguided in his judgment.

Each of the top 3 will have opportunities in the music business. The top 2 will get assured recording contracts. Whover is eliminated tomorrow night will have a possibility of getting signed, and if they do, will also get a minimum gaurantee, if they take the contract, that will pay at least $150,000.

After the AI tour, which also pays pretty good money, they will be working with a Management Group for a while – that will set-up bookings, T.V. appearances, etc. None of these 3 will be back to singing for a $5. cover in clubs, at least for quite a while.

TOP 2 Lauren and Scotty. By far the two best. Haley should have exited weeks ago. I don’t get why people like her. Her voice annoys the hell out of me everytime she opens her mouth. Haley is karaoke all the way. She constantly squats through her routine dance moves like she has to go to the bathroom. Her voice is only sometimes a knockout; she’s so inconsistent as to be embarrassingly mediocre at times. She had a chance to really sing tonight and kick it out, and instead she sort of muffled through the lyrics. She tries so hard to make an impression, yet leaves her heart and soul out of the picture so doesn’t connect with the audience. Lauren, too, tonight, leaned toward the mediocre. She could REALLY kick it out with her strong, beautiful voice, and definitely has passion that communicates well, but she restrains herself, which due to her youth is entirely understandable. Scotty makes you want to watch him, as he conveys sincerity throughout each performance. And those judges? Are you kidding me? If I hear them say “Good job” one more time…!!! They never genuniely critique any more, there’s just kudos all around and the occasional mention of a falter. Why are they so afraid of mentioning that a performance fell flat? Are they worried about the poor Idol-babies’ feelings? We need Simon Cowell. He’s honest and his bluntness is refreshing counterpart of the blah, blah, blather of the current judges.

Both Lauren and Scotty have beautiful voices and beautiful vocal control, but both being young, have some stage-presence learning to do (tho’ Scottie has really had a good bit of that all along) … I thought tonight was haley-scottie-lauren in order of overall performance. gonna be interesting tomorrow night, for SURE!

I just don’t see how Haley can be having such high turnouts on these polls. Dial Idol had her as last, not far behind Lauren. After strolling onto the vote for the worst website a couple of weeks ago, I have this huge feeling that they are hitting all the polls, and leaving comments. Of course she has real fans too, however. I just know so many people that cringe when she sings. I really love her strong voice, but that is all she can do. When she tries to do anything else, like the softer part of You Oughta Know, it just sounds absolutely awful! Besides that, I have had the feeling that she would be two-faced and do not like her attitude.

I have been going for Scotty the whole time, but Lauren has really proven herself to be absolutely fantastic! Her beautiful voice almost (if not does) brings me to tears every week. It is just perfect! I see her as Dolly Parton/Carrie Underwood. I think she will really have a wonderful career and highly disagree with all of the people that say she is not ready. She can sing, and her songs sound like they have a lot feeling in them. I am sure that a lot of people out there weren’t that confident starting out, not that I really see that in her. Experience will make her flourish and anyone would be crazy not to sign her right now. I really enjoy watching her onscreen and think she is great. I love her personality! I have been voting for her the past 2 weeks….I feel that she belongs in the top 2 over Haley any day.

If Haley does go through to the finale, her challenge will be to somehow stay pissed off when she performs. If she starts smiling through songs that are serious or bluesy, like she did in the first few weeks, she’ll get flushed like a turd by Scotty. If she stays sultry, dark and tough she’ll be a very, very formidable opponent.

so what a surprise. we have a bunch of delusional “vote for the worst” fake haley fans here! Just to set the record straight, haley at times is okay, and at other times is terrible! The times when she is terrible her singing is actually painful to listen to. Both scotty and lauren are about to embark on huge music careers. Meanwhile, the only career haley will have in music is singing at karoke bars, and, singing in the shower!

lisa, all I can say is your absolutely deluded. Vote for the worst obviously never works, look what it did for Paul McDonald. Haley has real fans because beyond her voice she’s showed emotion whether it be attitude or anger or sadness she’s showed she’s a person and I believe that is what so many have related to. Her voice is never painful and she has range and can do rock, blues, classics, new hits, she’s a very talented and very stage aware performer. She’s awesome. Scotty is great as well and plays it safe. Haley goes for challenges. Lauren is very as I read “plastic” and so young that she has work to do before having such a title as American Idol. She needs to build her confidence and find out who she is a bit more. She brings off confusion and self consciousness when she performs. She’s very talented and has a great voice but control of the stage and belting out with full confidence is her struggle. Haley is great and versatile. She’s a true artist as is Scotty. They’re older and have this well deserved whichever it may be that wins!

Yawn…..I stopped watching after Casey got the boot. Idol’s iron grip on performance format kept him and others ( James) from really being able to showcase their talent. Nevertheless, if these three are the best that America has to offer after thousand of auditions and millions of votes…this show is on thin ice… I”m sensing another “Soul Patrol” finish

Morning!

Did VFTW pick Haley? Well, she was just about the worst at the beginning of the season. She had trouble staying on pitch, dancing around the stage and pretty much getting the songs even close to right. I would have sent her home weeks ago.

However, last night I voted for her. This girl has taken everything the judges have said to her(most of it very mild compared to what Simon would have said) and learned from it. She started out at the bottom of the pack and has gradually worked her way up.

And it isn’t because she stayed under the radar….noooooo…this girl stayed on the radar for every single performance. She let us watch her struggles to rise to the top of the heap.

This year’s winner will not be my favorite winner, no matter who wins, but Haley Reinhart proved something this year that few others have ever proven. You can sit in the bottom three most of the season and still come out a winner!

I think Scotty should also be in the final 2. He’s not my favorite either but at least he understood what he was singing…..or sang it well enough to make me think he understood it.

I thought his best performance last night was his first. Amazed was sung beautifully, with sincerity. The only Jimmy pick I didn’t think much of was Scotty’s Are You going To Kiss Me or Not. It was cute, uptempo and showed off Scotty’s fun side but I didn’t enjoy it. She Believes in Me was a song the judges picked to(I believe) even out the competition. They knew Scotty would have trouble with the chorus…yet Scotty sang the song as a story and told it well despite struggling in the upper ranges.

Deirdre

May 19th, 2011

And here’s why I think Lauren should say goodbye tonight: Her first song “Wild Child” was kind of a mess. Breathy, frenetic and mostly unintelligible. Her second song was MUCH better. Jimmy knew exactly what Lauren should be singing and he obviously worked hard with her. I Hope You Dance was another very poor judges pick and listening to Lauren sing it proved why…she just didn’t get it.

Her voice is fine but untrained, she has little control over her breathing which makes her phrasing odd at best.

Bottom line…the girl should have waited another couple of years. Lack of life experience makes her feel like one of those little cute Disney princesses on the Disney channel…sure, they’re popular but do they understand what they’re singing?

I really don’t have a horse in this race. My favorite left last week. I watched last night with an eye to picking who I thought did the best job over-all…..not who has been my favorite throughout the season.

1. Haley…the maturity level stands out making her opponents look even younger by comparison.

2. Scotty….have to say that this kid has been solid ALL season and deserves a spot in the finals.

3. Lauren…how I wish she had waited to try-out for the show. In a few more years, she’ll get where she wants to go.

D, I am so proud of you. I’ve never seen a love/hate, polarizing performer change minds this late in the competition, and the fact that she was able to even sway you, one of her harshest and most bitter critics on this blog, says a lot for both of you.

I really hope she can somehow win this thing. I just love her style, sound, look, and grit to fight to the top as an underdog who was piled on weekly by the judges and largely ignored by the producers. It kinda restores my faith a bit in the voting public,

I thought this was a very good top 3 performance show. Each of these kids was very good in their own way. I do think that Haley showed a maturity that Scotty and Lauren both lack. There could have been some better song choices. “Wild One” was too safe of a choice for Lauren, it did nothing to showcase her voice. I had been hoping Haley would sing some Stevie Nicks, but “Rhiannon” did not really give her a chance to shine – “Landslide” might have been a better choice. The judges’ picks for all three could have been much better. My favorite performance of the night was a tie between Lauren’s “If I Die Young” and Haley’s “You Oughta Know”. I’m sure Scotty is a lock for the finals due to his fan base, but it’s a tossup between Haley and Lauren as to who joins him. I’m hoping for Haley, but who knows?

My guess is that if it is a Haley and Lauren/Scotty final, whoever comes out of the Lauren/Scotty combo wins because their votes will be combined. The Lauren voters will switch to Scotty and vice versa. Personally, I think this is Scotty’s to win. Not based on anything but my gut…and the fact that women and teen age girls make up the majority of votes and this guy has done a great job of winning the majority of that market.

DC

Ok like I said when it happened….Hailey stole all of Casey’s votes and now she is stealing all of James’ votes…she is a shoe in for the finals. It will be her v scotty…Lauren sucked it up bad last night…she screwed up on all 3 songs…the last song she was singing way too fast over the music and had to slow down to get back into it.

I think the judges set her up with “you outta know”…song is very difficult in the verses and you have to sing it somewhat low…she killed the chorus though..

I agree to that comment that Rodney has been a Hailey “hater” all season…be subjective Ho..

I still cannot stand listening to Haley. When she stomps that foot and goes into a squat, with the left arm reaching up, I know to plug me ears, here comes another screechy scream. Didn’t like anything she did – as I haven’t liked anything from her all season.

Scotty is just the same old boring Scotty – but unlike a lot of you, I kinda liked the Kenny R song -it’s a lovely song, and he was ok on it.

Lauren still my favorite, as she’s been since Pia left. I’m sure she’s going tonight, and I’ll really be sad about that. Lovely voice, adorable face, sweet and funny personality – the only one with the whole package for me.

Out of all the final 3s in AI history, this was NOT one to remember. Quite possibly the worst final 3 in all AI seasons. AI should seriously think of taking the age up to 21, in which singers voices are more mature and trained. This is not to say young people don’t have talent, but it is very few young people that have a truly special gift of song that develops strong at an early age. It usually takes time, and it’s quite evident that all of AI final 3 are very good amateurs at best. Whoever wins, will need a LOT of guidance.

Deirdre, as always, you’ve nailed it, for me, anyway! Haley has come through the storm a champion. The other two have talent and promise, but Haley has pulled it all together and has that special indefinable something that not even every Idol winner has but that a handful of great performers have. I know you all have been waiting anxiously… so hear are The Rickster’s reviews from last night:

Round One:

Scotty: I liked it… but it wasn’t his best performance

Lauren: Song selection… song selection…. song selection! She needed to pick songs that showed her range. She didn’t. Maybe it’s because her voice was frazzled.

Haley: I admit it – I was wrong about her singing “What Is And What Will Never Be.” She rocked it! Nice touch with dad (who can seriously play a guitar) on stage with her.

Round One Winner: Haley by a mile

Round Two:

Scotty: I thought this was his best performance of the night. I had never heard the song… but I enjoyed the way he had fun with the performance.

Lauren: I had never heard the song, but I thought she did a great job with it. But I don’t think Jimmy did her any favors with the song selection

Haley: She blew me away with her first song. This song left me seriously lacking. I agree with Rodney… the wind machine was the most notable thing about the song. What’s up with that?

I don’t think Jimmy did any of the contestants any favors with his selections.

Round Two Winner: Lauren (Scotty a close second)

Round Three:

Scotty: Struggled a bit in the higher range, but who knew when the season started that he could even hit the upper range? Still, a decent performance.

Lauren: Wonderful song and she did a really good job with it.

Haley: A mess. Crystal & Alana Morrisette did this one on last year’s finale. The judges did Haley no favors with this pick.

Round Three Winner: Lauren

Best performance of the night: Haley: Round 1
Best performance of most songs: Lauren (Rd 1 & Rd 2)
Most consistent performer of the night: Scotty

Who goes home: I hate to say… but probably Lauren. (However… if Rodney says Haley will win it all in his next CineStars segment, Haley goes home.)

It appears that the homeowners of America, are only pushing for Scotty or Lauren for obvious reasons. Can we please stop the divide and let the best person win (Haley). You will have plenty of time to enjoy your favorite country music idols after the rigged competition is over. Good thing they didn’t play highlights of the home visits last night. If America had seen the damage done in the Rossville area and the way that community rallied around Laurne she would be a shoo-in for the finals based on the sympathy vote.

BTW…..Still watching, but I’m done wasting my time voting. It really doesn’t matter who wins at this point. The level of talent in the final is about equal, and the best talent is long gone. Can’t wait to see who finishes in the finals for The Voice.

Oh yeah, Sing-off has been renewed for another season. If you guys are interested in “real” singing, true talent, and pure ear orgasms you need to check out Sing-off. If you don’t have an educated ear or just used to one type of music, this show is not for you. Talk about pitch perfect singing, this is the show. This show can prove to be quite educational to the casual listener, but toxic to closed minds. JMO

Did anybody catch it when she asked Scotty to cut his hair for “The Finale”?
I think she was talking about next week’s finale, and thus slipped up big time.
The producers have pegged/determined that Scotty WILL be in the Finale.
Especially seeing that we haven’t had a male country voice get this close yet on Idol.
That tall blonde dude way back doesn’t come close to Scotty.
But Haley has the best overall package. Hot, as some have said. Unique voice, one I look forward to hearing on the radio.
And you don’t have to have the greatest singing voice to have great hits. You just need the HITS!

Ok, for all of you that say the singer must have “life experience”, I vote for that little girl on America’s Got Talent.. She has no life experience but through her voice can elicit emotion. Why do you have to have experienced hardship to sing with emotion and style? Probably the toughest final three to judge in years. Everyone has their favorite for one reason or another and they cannot have their minds changed, nor should they if that’s the way they feel.

On a sad note… he wasn’t one of my favorite characters on “Taxi,” but he sure didn’t need to end up this way:

Jeff Conaway, alum of Celebrity Rehab and star from Grease and Taxi, has officially slipped into a coma. The actor is in critical condition after overdosing last week. The 60-year-old was found unconscious after possibly overdosing on pain pills.

The star’s manager told E! Online, “He is in a coma and unresponsive at this time. He turned his head two days ago, but nothing since.”

Pretty scary since doctors haven’t confirmed whether or not they think he will come out of the coma. Jeff is currently in a hospital in Encino, Calif.

Back in 2008, he joined Celebrity Rehab and shared the dark secrets about his addictions to alcohol, painkillers and cocaine.

Okay, I actually enjoyed last night. I don’t have a favorite horse in the race so I sat back and hoped to be entertained.

Best of the night – “What is and what should never be” by Haley. One of my all time favorites by Zepplin and I thought she nailed it. Also, I thought it was cool that her dad was rippin’ the guitar. Even if you hate Haley, you gotta admit that was pretty cool. Just imagine when you were younger if you had singing aspirations and could get on national TV in front of millions singing a song by one of the greatest super groups and have your dad playing lead. Whew!

Worst of the night – Beyonce’s video. Good Lord what a waste.

Best vote getting moment – Scotty’s dad singing the intro to Josh Turner’s song.

Top overall all performances of the night: Haley, Scotty, then Lauren. I like Lauren, but I think she goes home tonight. My reasoning:

* Scotty benefits from the biggest voting block – young girls. This will keep him in the race.
* If someone’s rooting for a girl, the vote gets split – hurting Haley and/or Lauren.
* If someone likes country, the vote gets split – hurting Scotty and/or Lauren
* If someone hates country, Haley is the benefactor.
* If someone decides to vote for the underdog, Haley is the benefactor.
* If someone is ticked about the judges recent comments, Haley is the benefactor.

I just think this means bad news for Lauren and her fans. No dig at her talent, but someone has to go home.

Worst song selection per round – the judges. Terrible choices, especially for Scotty and Haley. Kenny Rogers and Alanis Morrissette? Get real.

Worst Jimmy Iovine selection – “Rhiannon” for Haley. I told my wife before she sang that it was a trap song. “Rhiannon” puts the focus more on Stevie Nicks rather than the song and people seem to instinctively compare the artist with Nicks rather than on the quality of the performance. Here’s Haley is a Nicks-style dress with the wind machine. Puhleeze. No way to win this one.

I believe the final two will be Scotty and Haley with Scotty ultimately winning. Haley seems to be one of the most polarizing contestants to get this far in a long long time. People either lover her or hate her and I don’t think that’s the recipe for winning AI.

JD

May 19th, 2011
10:16 am

Haley just happens to be peeking at the right time. She has dialed back her attitude just like Scotty dialed back his goofy expressions. Lauren was always less polarizing and has remained that way, although it seems some are very concerned about what she wears… I was glad to see that Lauren got to take Idol to Rossville, but I do think that all the activity affected her voice. I personally don’t feel that strongly about which one should win, so good luck to all three.

beebee, Jennifer didn’t slip. Whether Scotty moves on to the finale or not, the Top 13 always comes back to perform. They do a sort of “sneak preview” of the Idol tour. Lee should be performing as well. I’d guess they’ll bring David Cook to sing Don’t You Forget About Me (this years “going home” montage song). Kelly will not be there if I go by what she said last week. But she was already on the show with Jason Aldean. Not sure if Carrie is coming back…would make sense since she hasn’t been on, and the duet with Brad Paisley is being release soon.

Think back to when you were 16. The life experiences affected you probably as much or more than they do now, and for a longer period of time. (the rest of your life sometimes) I’m sure every teenage girl feels what Taylor Swift sings about and that is why she is extremely popular, and I personally don’t think she is a great singer, but sings and writes from her heart.
