Someone on my live coveritlive blog tonight said “Idol” has yet again become a “sausage fest.”

For the first time in “Idol” history, the first four out are women! (That’s with an asterisk since Casey last week was the bottom feeder but was saved.)

Tonight, we lost precocious teen Thia Megia and quirky Milwaukee mom Naima Adedapo.

Neither was shocking departures. In fact, the consensus on Zap2it’s expert panel of “Idol” viewers had Naima and Thia as most likely to go home. My prediction was Paul McDonald and Naima gone with Stefano Langone as the third one in the bottom three. I liked Thia’s performance last night so I let my personal biases keep me from thinking she’d go home.

Let’s study why:

Thia had one of the purest voices ever in this competition. But she had the problem of being a teen who spent a lot of time on stage while not developing her own personality. That lack of connection with the songs she sang limited her fan base. Even though she did connect with “Daniel” last night, a lot of folks had written her off as boring and could not find the emotion last night. She is one of those singers you have to wonder might have done better on “Idol” if she had waited a couple of years.

Naima reminded me of Nadia Turner a few years ago. Both had a very defined, vibrant personality and a good (though not great) voice. Unfortunately, Naima’s appeal was limited, though she did pull off some good performances. Last night’s reggae vocals were risky and may have turned off more people than turned them on to vote. “Idol’ is a mainstream crowd. She is not mainstream.

Why did Paul land in the bottom three? Vocally, he is the oddest of the bunch but also lately has been the weakest. Nothing he did with “Rocket Man” changed that impression. He has good stage presence, though, and that’s gotten him this far.

Chuckles[tm], who is a regular blogger here and seems to have some inside ties with “Idol,” said the 1980s theme we were expecting last week will be this week. Then word that the PR folks made a mistake and jumped the gun a week early on the 80s theme makes more sense. Fox usually sends out the theme and next week’s performers around midnight EST (after the show airs on the West Coast.)

The producers made a good choice dispensing with the group sing and doing smaller duet/trio/quartets. The Lauren Alaina/Scotty McCreery take on the Carrie Underwood/Randy Travis duet “I Told You So” was especially good. It filled more time but in a good way.

Fantasia captivated some, repulsed others as usual. (She has been back on the show more than anybody, hasn’t she?). The Jamie Foxx/will.i.am promo for an upcoming movie was painful.

Here were results from the coveritlive polls

Lauren/Scotty’s “I Told You So”: A- 78% B- 6% C-17% F-0%

“Kryptonite” music video: Cute -59% Bleh 41%

Naima and Jacob’s “Solid” : A-0% B-37% C-47% F-16%

Fantasia’s “Collard Greens and Cornbread” – Delicious- 21%, Mute button- 79%

Thia, Haley and Pia’s “Teenage Dream” Dreamy – 13%, Just okay – 75%, Nightmarish 13%

Who will take up the final bottom 3 seat:
Casey – 5% James 10% Paul 30% Stefano -55% (whoops!)

Which Haley do you prefer?
Reinhart- 67%, Scarnato – 33%

In retrospect, should Kris Allen have beaten Adam Lambert?
Yes! America voted correctly- 33% No! A true injustice! -66%

The backgrounder video of the “Idols” week:
Edifying: 8%, Entertaining but not edifying: 42% Time filler at est: 50%

House band’s “Band on the Run” (Paul, James, Casey, Stefano): A-41%, B-23% C-32% F-5%

Should Paul have been in the bottom three?
Yes -62%, No- should have been Stefano 32%, No-should have been someone else -6%

Jamie Foxx/will.i.am’s “Hotwings”
Great fun- 8% Painful to anyone with hearing – 92%

Group sings vs. what they did tonight:
97% what they did tonight 3% group sings

This is really sad…so here we go again…four years in a row. The girls being plucked, one by one, they love me…they love me not…until we’re finally left with only two…Casey and Scotty. Four years in a row…a white guy wins. Pia? Forget about her. She is NOT as good as Casey or Scotty and will not make the finale. I’m just totally disgusted as to how each and ever year the girls are being voted off. WHO is voting? Girls and women only? And they’re voting with their romantic interest toward the guys? Idol needs to completely eliminate the split of 6 guys/6 girls making it through to balance it again. When they first began the show, there was no split…the votes went to the top 12 regardless of male/female. Obviously they need to return to that formula cuz THIS ain’t workin!!!

Kiki, as Rodney stated, Casey was technically eliminated last week, but saved by the judges. I’ll put my swami hat on and predict that next week we will lose either Paul or Stefano.

Perhaps the judges are partly to blame.

#1. They “saved” Casey. Bad move.
#2. They have critiqued the girls harder than the boys.

I think in the next three weeks wie will see Stefano, Paul and Haley go home. Not sure what order but it is a good bet. Lauren could get to the finals but I think it will be Scotty, James or Casy in the final.

Can’t say that I’m sad. It’s too bad about Thia, but that’s the nature of the beast.

The next three to go home should all be guys.

Paul then Stefano then Jacob.

After that, Casey and Haley.

That will leave a “Final Four” of Lauren, Scotty, Pia and Jame.

I want Pia to win! I think that she is the best singer of all. But, a co-worker told me today that she is conceited. I see her as assertive, classy, and confident, not conceited. Do you think Pia believes she is the best Idol contestant of all?

Personally I don’t care if it’s male or female, black or white, I just want the best singers. I’ve got to think whoever it is that gives the winner the record deal is praying casey doesn’t win, we remember what happened to taylor hicks and he sounds so much like taylor hicks part 2. I did like casey when he used to just sing, but this new casey that has came out ever since the live singing repulses me. I predict the final to be either pia or lauren and scotty or james. My favorite is lauren.

Island girl, I would guess that your coworker is a female, I would then guess that she is jealous of Pia. The girl is beautiful and a talented singer, and I’m guessing that your coworker has never spent any time around Pia. She may be conceited, most talented people are, but I would guess jealousy is the explanation of your coworkers thoughts.

I think that was the best Jacob so far, not as screaming and the face and gestures did not seem so out of place.

Perhaps the bottom 3 status of Paul will convince him to go back and try and to do well (or perhaps he made the tour and now he doesn’t much care – we’ll know for sure if Paul breaks out the reggae in the next two weeks – speaking of reggae, have all reggae singers gone home from Idol?)

Actually I think Fantasia should have gone home – I guess we are lucky she isn;t sticking around. Mostly I have problems with the tone of voice I guess more than most.

Casey’s rendition of Your Song on wednesday was mind-blowing. Seacrest said he got an insane amount of votes, I would be interested to know the number. By the way, I started watching wednesday and now I am hooked for the rest of the season. Lauren is my favorite, I think she is really special. There is nothing racial about telling it like it is. The best way to handle this is limit people to one vote per phone number, one vote per computer. This auto dial crap is not realistic, and setting up call centers for your home town candidate sucks too. The other suggestion would be to vote for your least favorite, I’d buy a phone franchise to vote Paul off. My wife, sister and sister-in-law hate his singing more than I do. At the moment I think it is James to lose.

Sad to see Thia go home. Loved her voice although she didn’t always connect with the songs. My favorites are Jacob and James. I love that Jacob has personality and feels the songs; however, I didn’t like the duet with Naima. Wrong song choice. I like Pia but “Yawn”. I like Scotty and love his voice although I would love to hear him sing something other than country.

I am big fan of Fantasia but the song she sang is not a mainstream song. It has a ol’ bluesy feel to it. I would rather her sing one of her ballads off of the new cd. Hated the hair. IMHO, people need to get over her weight. Just my thoughts.

Hey, Stefano can came out of nowhere like Kris Allen. Don’t forget Lee DeWyze, lacked confidence, blah, blah, blah! At least this year, whoever wins is talented. This is such a great pool and I agree, the judges are great. Steven Tyler makes the group more well-rounded although he does come across like Ellen Degeneres at times. And Randy has lost some of the Dawg (yeah!). Jennifer Lopez is really good with technical advice. Kudos to the producers!

For the yoohoo poster above (bhead – short for bonehead?) who critized me for being racist and sexist. Facts are facts….
1. David Cook. White – check; Male – check
2. Kris Allen. White – check; Male – check
3. Lee DeWyze. White – check; Male – check
Now – unless you know something about these past three winners that they’re really a black woman dressed in disguise as a white male, then please feel free to correct me. And at this point, Scotty, James and Casey appear to be front-runners. Again, all three are white males. Furthermore, I’m white. Being a racist against one’s own race makes no sense at all.

Jacob reminds me of the g-u-y-s and the minister of music at my old church, he has that same singing style. and he screams a lot. tiring. Pia has a great voice but I am sick of her ballads! Good morning, all. I really blew it last night, forgetting that Idol aired at 8 PM and not 9 PM. So, I missed blogging with everyone during the show and did not care to turn the computer on afterward. Thank goodness I always DVR it! I am not a Lauren fan, but I absolutely loved the duet with Scotty. I see the producers are already lining up the tour numbers, and that should definitely be a part of it. I really liked not having the group sing.

Looking back, I think this week was boring. Elton songs just do not translate well for individual interpretation, IMO. I hope the 80s week brings out more excitement.

I’m disappointed but not surprised that Thia went home. I was looking at our list of numbers to which we texted and at the bottom I had written “In Trouble: Naima, Thia Paul”

Sure had that right.

But what was the “you won’t believe who goes home” thing in the intro? It wasn’t a great surprise.

Add my kudos to getting rid of the group sing. I liked the Lauren & Scotty duet. The others? Jacob/Naima: never liked that song anyway. Pia, Haley & Thia: okay. The house band: Horrible.

I am satisfied with the results. Thia should try again though. She might have what it takes two or three years down the road.

I thought the duet with Lauren and Scotty was excellent. So did the judges since it was the only time they gave a standing ovation last night.

Fantasia was pathetic and so was the song from the Rio movie. Two bad choices from the producers.

I think the judges are overall better than ever. However, I do miss Simon and believe that this panel of judges needs to have a little more tough love. That being said it’s possible that the producers have asked them to remain positive with all their comments.

Have a good weekend all.

Melissa’s Mom….if you go back and read MY original post which is the FIRST one on this thread, I merely complained about all the girl’s being picked off one by one. I never said anything about race except for the OBVIOUS fact the LAST THREE YEARS in a row a white male has won. I’m not talking about Season 1, 2, 3, 4….ONLY the last three years and now that all the girls are getting voted off it is appearing ANOTHER white male will win this year.

As for Not fooled, I NEVER said the show was racist. Some bonehead said I was a racist and sexist for pointing out that the last three year’s winners have been white males which is a fact. Racist? No. Sexist? No. Facts? Yes. And you’re an idiot for saying my name sounds “black”. What does THAT mean? Kiki: This blog is kind of sensitive in nature. And it’s so busy, everyone mostly scans thru posts quickly – and that definitely can lead to misinterpretation of things said sometimes.

Sadly, little tweens and teens seem to control most of the voting, ergo the girls get s-it upon! Wasn’t like that in the early years, though God knows who in the world voted for Fansleazia! There’s not a single demographic I can imagine voting that way!

But, since these little gals seem to adore all the Disney girls and Taylor Swift, you’d think they’d jump on a lovely, talented young girl like Lauren or Thia – just not happening on Idol.

Explaination of Naima’s oust stated above by Rodney: “Last night’s reggae vocals were risky and may have turned off more people than turned them on to vote. “Idol’ is a mainstream crowd. She is not mainstream.” I think that comment is spot on from Rodney. I’m CERTAIN Naima will be fine. She’s gotten the exposure she needs to have a chance to be very successful in her niche.

It has also been mentioned that once again the women are being plucked away first. Looks like we’re going to have a “sausage fest” again. This is true and trendy as of late on AI. Although Crystal Bowersox finished runner-up and very talented, I’m sure a lot of women banded together to help push her through.

What’s also true and trendy of AI, is people of color are being eliminated early too. Whether you are of asian, latino, or african decent, chances are all will be eliminated before the final 4. Not trying to make this a racial issue, it’s just the way it is and has been noticable the past couple of years. Hey, it may just be a preference of what the mainstream is comfortable with, and what mainstream will toloerate. If your style does not fit the mainstream, or if the mainstream “doesn’t get it”, then you get no votes. It doesn’t matter if you have the talent or not. AI isn’t all about the “talent”. There’s no right or wrong, it’s just the nature of the show’s base.

Thanks Sam-A….but seriously people need to re-read what they read if they have a problem with it to make sure they simply didn’t misinterpret as they obviously did. And you may be right about why the girls are getting voted off as it has trended now for the last four years. The tween/teen girls are voting for their “crush”. :-)

Thank you G!!! I’m not the only once who has noticed that the girls will all be gone in a few weeks at this rate with only Pia standing….just as Crystal was left with four guys last year! Sausagefest! LOL…I love it!

And the shame of the tween/teen vote is there’s not a single attractive guy on this year! Stefano – meh; Paul – nice teeth, looks about 38; Casey – if you want a 40 year old mountain man, he’s your guy; Scotty – cutish for a friend, crush – no wayyyyyy! Jacob – do I really need to comment?! James – all the weird blinking and squinting mixed with the faux-hawk – nah!

Yet there are some really cute, talented girls, ie Lauren, Pia, Thia, “Legs” girl ( name escapes me).

I don’t think there’s a bias against blacks/hispanics/etc – it just happens that for the last 2-3 years there haven’t been any very talented ones on Idol. Audience votes for the ones they like best – what is racist about that? I voted for LaToya London year 3. And Kimberly Locke was in top 3, along with Ruben, in season 2. I know several regulars here voted for Melinda a few years ago. Send some really talented & attractive (whole pkg) ethnics in and the votes will happen!

The Jamie Foxx/Will I. Am mess was unbearable. I went to commercial break. Fantasia turned out not so bad for what it was. Greens and Cornbread. Started weak but got pretty soulful. Not a fan but not too bad for what it was. Cheap entertainment.
The Thia/Naima departure was of course predictable. I was kind of hoping Paul would go. Haley seems to have picked up a little steam. Ok with that. James and Casey down a notch. Scotty=Scotty. Move along, text your vote.
The smaller groups were okay but like seeing the choreography of the group sings.
I’d say Stefano is the man to beat for going home this week.

Morning from sunny, warm California!

Thia and Naima shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone. Naima didn’t have the vocal chops and Thia didn’t have the maturity needed for her performance skills.

Looking forward to see the duets. sounds interesting.

I’m very happy that I’ll be able to fast forward through you-know-who.

As for girls being eliminated…..to be honest, I would have picked these girls to go first…with the exception of Paul and Stefano, they just don’t have it. Re previous years…other than Crystal, name one girl from the last 3 years who was Idol winner material. Maybe Allison but she needed more time to mature as well.

I did not care for Fantasia’s song. We kept rewinding to confirm she was singing about collards and cornbread. Probably the dumbest song I’ve ever heard, although I do love both foods. I thought both ladies handled the bad news in a very classy way. It was a classy end and made Casey look pretty stupid for all of his antics the week before. (Please – another doctor episode with Casey??? This guy has some issues.) The highlight of the night was the duet with Lauren and Scotty. It was stellar. At this point, I’m picturing a rock v. country final, although I think it will be Lauren and not Scotty. Scotty has his voters, but he will not be picking up the leftover voters from those voted off before then. Have a nice weekend, everyone!

I think people will only be happy if we all just state that America is sexist and racist. This of course ignores what mainstream America listens to and focuses the attention only on Idol. A place where people don’t plot together, but instead simply vote for their favorite. Season 3 had 3 guys in the top 9, they lost because they weren’t that good. Viewers then became wowed by those that could make a song their own or perform a unique arrangement… about the only people rising to that challenge happened to be white guys. It’s not their color or their gender but what they do on stage.

Hey, Deirdre! How was your flight? Uneventful, I hope. Guess from your comments you did not have access to tv on your plane. I think you will love the Scotty and Lauren duet. Lauren seems to be listening to someone and has toned down her act a bit. I like her better now, though am still not on the bandwagon.

The duet with Jacob and Naima was awkward, due to Jacob’s having two left feet. They were supposed to dance.

Harriett, no the plane did not have tv’s unfortunately. And the movie was awful, too. One of those Focker movies but we managed to get past Tulsa without incident.

I think(and this is totally different than where I was before) Lauren has the potential to win. IF(note big IF)the producers can get her to stop turning people off by flirting with the judges. She’s not my favorite but I saw sparks of something the country will like during her last performance.

Pia so far is a big voice, a beautiful body and nothing else. No real emotion to speak of, no song interpretations that make her step away from Celine. However, she has the chance to win, too.

Both James and Casey are polarizing. Reminds me of the “Adam screeches:no, Adam sings” debate. I’m not sure that they can win. Jacob also has his polarizing traits….so who does that leave from the male contestants? Stefano? Paul?…Not going to happen. Scotty is VERY popular but he’s soooooo country that I think he turns off a lot of people.

A girl could very well win this year.

For those of you who want to inject color into a talent competition…..blah, blah, blah. It’s about talent, plain and simple. Man up and make a difference instead of whining about how life is not fair. As far as the show goes, I am really disappointed. I don’t think the talent pool is that great and what is the deal with the judges? They add no value at all. Their critique is like watching a bunch a little league moms handing out trophies to everyone so nobody gets their feelings hurt (I’m not against giving little kids trophies, but these “kids” are adults who want to succeed in the music industry shark tank.). I was so looking forwarding to Steven’s spunk and fire, instead he acts like he is on Prozac. Jennifer – she is pretty and I love her lipstick. Randy!! I thought he would have at least kept some of Simon’s honest crankiness. Overall, its all so dull!

Don’t have time to read others comments before I post, so hopefully I’m not being too redundant.

LOVED the pairings vs group sing! So much better and it felt like it kept things rolling more. Result shows can get stagnant.

Disliked both “celebrity” performances, and unfortunately can’t get “turnips greens and cornbread” out of my head.

I’m happy with the bottom 2 this week. Interested to see what the remaining contestants do with next weeks’ Rock n’ Roll theme (my favorite genre!).

As far as the judges go, I wish Steven would get some of his energy back. I don’t care if he calls everything “beautiful”, but give us something to work with. I too am tired of J-Lo’s intrusions on Randy’s comments. Let him speak! It’s not the “J-Lo’s opinion is the only one that counts and should be heard” show. I like her judging overall though. I think Randy is doing very well.

That’s all.

Show has a lot of talent this year – its great to watch – I wish Casey would bring back his Bass- I wish Jacob would sing more luther type songs- I hope Scotty keeps singing low and deep – oh well – It’s just really fun to watch

Glad Paul made it, he’s the best and was in the bottom 3, crazy.

Why would anyone vote for Casey after being saved is crazy, he should have been gone. He remind me of the guy last year who did one nice song in Hollywood week but people kept voting for him based one that one fluke performance.

They should go home in this order
Next Casey Then
Jacob then
Stefano

Then the battle is on

While I think the boy’s version of “Band On The Run” was tepid at best, I was very impressed with Casey actually owning a Hofner Bass! Wow! Obviously James is not the only McCartney fan in the group.

And Lauren was great, even brought Scotty up a level.

Dierdre: hope you’re right about a girl winning – I’ve thought the girls were better than the boys from the beginning. And, don’t gloat too much – we’re having sunny and low 70’s tomorrow and Sunday (supposedly). But I do truly love CA! Hey, maybe you can get tix to next week’s show if you’re still out there.

The girls voted off deserved to be voted off. Honestly, I was disgusted early on when they had to keep 12 gals and 12 guys so they let some great guys go in order to keep some so-so gals. Not fair. Oh, and I am female.

J911 – I’d been thinking exactly the opposite, ie kept some extremely mediocre dudes and let a couple of really good girls go.
