Does Twitter following equal votes?

I have been very remiss about following the 11 “American Idol” contestants on Twitter. I know I should be. MTV did a tracking for me.

Here are the top 11 ranked by Twitter followers as of 6 p.m. March 29, 2011. Scotty’s following is not surprising given his age and his popularity. Casey at No. 2? Obviously, those fans did not step up last week!  I’m really not sure how much this ultimately correlates to real votes. But it’s data and people are hungry for data!

1. Scotty McCreery: 49,606

2. Casey Abrams: 48,341

3. Paul McDonald: 40,863

4. Lauren Alaina: 34,804

5. Pia Toscano: 34,538

6. James Durbin: 33,439

7. Thia Megia: 33,033

8. Stefano Langone 30,545

9. Jacob Lusk: 19,969

10. Haley Reinhart: 19,216

11. Naima Adedapo: 15,628

Facebook. I’m not even sure these pages are official. Some appear so, some don’t. Some of the contestants are active, some aren’t. I couldn’t even find a page for James Durbin!

1. Scotty McCreery: 39,660

2. Thia Megia: 22,384

3. James Durbin: 13,327

4. Paul McDonald: 12,388

5. Lauren Alaina: 9,301

6. Stefano Langone: 8,150

7. Casey Abrams: 7,174

8. Naima Adedapo: 5,194

9. Haley Reinhart: 3,603

10. Jacob Lusk: 3,459

11. Pia Toscano: 1,598

I’ve been interested in seeing how people finish in relation to the number of followers. Casey… well maybe followers doesn’t equal votes. I believe that there is a hurdle in place to slow down internet votes, leaving the social media types forced to use old fashion methods.

I think twitterers and facebookers are too busy with their obsessions to even watch Idol, far less vote.

Just two words about “Source Code” – SEE IT

The problem with followers is that reflects demographics as well as early performances. Andrew Garcia last year had a lot of followers, too, but mediocre performances later on killed him. People don’t usually “un” follow someone on Twitter if they stop voting for them.

The figures probably equal their number of fans worldwide and it doesn’t really show how many of those fans are eligible to vote and are even voting. So it’s absolutely unreliable!

Good morning!

I would imagine that most who Twitter (twit-iots) also spend a lot of time texting. But since you can only text vote if you’re with AT&T, that (it would seem to me) would cut the overall figures down quite a bit.

So, no, I don’t think there’s much correlation between the number of Twitter followers and the voting blocks.

Morning!

I think twitter and Facebook are just 2 more measuring sticks that, combined with others, may give one an idea of how well a contestant is doing. But as Rodney said, just because you “liked” someone during the prelims doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re still voting for that person.

Really looking forward to tonight’s show and hoping that the mentors have realized that Casey needs to change his tactics.

Highlander: Love “twit-iots”!! Never heard it before, but how appropriate!

Probably Casey’s high number of followers is due to people looking to see if there’s any mention of his health and recurring fainting/hospital visits, et al.

Good morning all. I agree, Sam, abuot the curiosity factor and Twitter with Casey. I am looking forward to the show, too, D. And, besides Casey, the mentors need to work with Scotty and his facial/eyebrow expressions that have nothing to do with the song. His stage presence without a guitar is awkward, to say the least, with his leaning, scrunching his shoulders, etc.

At 16, Scotty has a lot to learn, no doubt about it.

I hope someone has also talked to Haley about her “dance” moves. Elaine Benes really exists!

I just hope they pick the right songs from Elton’s work. This could be another great competition tonight because of the two-fer eliminations.

Speaking of the “two-fer” elimination…I’m going to be about half-way to California(please let me make it past Tulsa this time) for a long weekend with my little sweetheart, Lucas, when the eliminations are announced so I’ll be depending on y’all to let me know what happened.

Maybe we should offer to be mentors next year! We’re all so full of great suggestions. This year, I’d want either Lauren (stop flirting, tops a little higher) and Pia (move your butt girl, and sing some fabulous fast number – do a fast Kelly song if the opportunity arises).

That offer, of course, would exclude Rickster and JT – can’t afford the leering and drooling over the girls! And lord knows what would happen if Diana D or Carrie made an appearance.

Here are my song choices for tonight (in segments to try and defeat the evil PacMan – who hates me)

Casey: To buffer the “angry white guy” image – “Grey Seal”
Haley: “Blue Eyes” – would be perfect for her voice.
Jacob: “Levon” – that song with his emotions? Stunner!
James: “Daniel” would let the rocker show a softer side.

Hi y’all,

Twitter is an interesting tool. Honestly, I don’t think there’s much of a correlation between followers/fans and votes. Not only because people tend to not “unfollow” that quickly even if they stop voting, but also because some might be tempted to follow multiple contestants as well.

Sam-A, funny you brought up Kelly. Pia has mentioned that Kelly is her favorite (+1). However, as much as I think Pia has the chops, she needs to be a little careful going that way.

D, we’ll do our best of relating the results. Two are going home! After last week, I don’t know that anyone really is safe. I think part of the appeal of this season is that anyone of them can do either really well or bomb.

Any guesses on how’s “leaving us tomorrow night?”

Lauren: Our little “Honky Tonk” girl from Rossville should do “Honky Cat.”
Naima: Last week she did an African dance. This week, the Swahili-inspired “Akuna Matata.” (Seriously.)
Paul: The only song he could possibly sing (or should consider singing) – “Your Song.”
Pia“Philadelphia Freedom” would blunt any attempts to balladize and would require movement.

Scotty: Not only “Country Comfort” the only song he should sing, it’s his “lane.” (As opposed to Anoop Desai’s lane, which is “is smart and hip. It’s hooky, it’ s catchy.” Of course, he’s stalled completely dead in that lane… but that’s another story.)

Stefano: If he can keep his eyes open & connect with the crowd (and the song) – “Candle in the Wind” or “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” would offer this crooner his best shot.

Thia: With her pacific island heritage… “Island Girl” is the natural choice.

And how many times will we hear Ryan stress how “every vote is important.”

One point: it appears that anyone who can text can text vote. It is not limited to AT&T, but those people simply aren’t charged.

You sure about that, JT? Ryan says “If you’re with AT&T you can text your vote…”

Re: Voting via text

For American Idol, only AT&T wireless customers can vote by text message using their cell phone keypad to write the message ‘VOTE’ and sending it to a 4 digit contestant number.

Rickster! Are you familiar with the “Island Girl” lyrics? If so, do you really want a 16-year old singing about turning tricks and johns and a “white man’s world” ????

k&cf, I would bet that Paul and Thia are gonners if everyone does well tonight. Those that didn’t vote heavily for Casey last week will make sure that he is not in the bottom 3 this week (or bottom 4) however Ryan is going to stage it.

K&C: I totally agree that doing Kelly is very dangerous – as the Bond title says so eloquently: “Nobody Does It Better”! However, if Pia did “Beautiful Disaster” (my personal Kelly fave) in the uptempo version, I think she’d possibly do a really good job!

Thanks K&Cfan. We discussed in the off season, and the time I paid attention to Ryans blurb about it, it wasn’t as clear cut. Of course that was once out of the 40 times he has said it this season.

Woodpappy, I’m thinking Thia as well, but wonder if Paul’s time is up.

Sam-A, love Beautiful Disaster. Kelly has done about 3 different arrangements of that song. Well, technically, Jason Halbert is the one who’s done them. (Her musical director, in case anyone wondered). She could find a version to make it work.

JT, yup. I recalled having discussed it, but I couldn’t remember what the answer was. Figured I’d check the source.

JENNIFER PLEASE LEARN HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE CONTESTANTS NAMES!!!! ALSO, YOU CAN TELL BY THE COMMENTS FROM THE JUDGES WHO WILL BE VOTED OFF THE NEXT NIGHT. THIS SHOW DOES NOT GO ON VOTES FROM THE PUBLIC. I USE TO THINK IT DID BUT NOW I DON’T.
