Theme next week: the 1980s! Fantasia, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx to perform

MTVThe decade I grew up in, the 1980s, will be the theme for the top 11 show (part two). Or should we call it the top 10 show plus one? Or the post-save top 11 show?

I digress. Season one, “Idol” had an ’80s/’90s week. Season 7 did an ’80s week during the top 16.  And that’s all. In comparison, they’ve done Motown at least five times.

The 1980s – the decade of big hair, “I Want My MTV” and Michael Jackson’s heyday – had its fair share of cheesy pop music but plenty of classic songs, too. So the “Idol” contestants will have to tread carefully. We’ll study possible song choices for them next week.

As for the results show, the pattern continues: two performances, one by an “Idol” alum, plus another act. This time, season 3 winner Fantasia will sing her latest single “Collard Greens & Cornbread” (how Southern!). And Jamie Foxx and will.i.am are scheduled to sing “Hot Wings (I Wanna Party).” Maybe they should have had a food-related theme week instead!

All three have performed on “Idol” shows before. Heck, will.i.am was just there last week with the Black Eyed Peas!

“Hot Wings” comes from an upcoming animated feature film “Rio,” which is obviously going to pay some big bucks for promotion before its Apriil 15 opening.

- RATINGS UPDATE:

The Wednesday performance show drew nearly 24 million viewers, down one percent from the top 11 performance show a year ago. The 18-49 numbers were down 6%.  The early Thursday results numbers (which will  be adjusted upwards) show 20.8 million viewers, down 3% from a year ago. The 18-49 numbers were down 13%. In other words, “Idol” is holding its own.

Have to say this, although Casey has a very nice voice, and can probably sing anything, his acting is horrible!

I thought Casey was going to pass out on the stage when they saved him. He was truely shocked and I believe you will see a much better Casey next week. Reality had just slapped him in the face.

I cannot think of 3 performers I’d rather see LESS than these 3! Never watch Freaktasia, turned from the BEP’s a few weeks ago when they were on, and while Fox is a good actor, that ain’t “singing” he does by any stretch of the imagination. Guess I’ll be tuned in for the first 10 mins and the last 5 next Thursday.

Now that the save is gone we won’t have to hear Ryan go drama queen on us and say the contestant will be “singing for their life”. A little too over the top for me.

Will.i.am gets under my nerves. Something about that man makes me not want to watch him perform. He’s coc*ky, even when he just stands there. He’s gives off a condescending attitude. I know he does a lot of philantrophy work, but hmmmmmm….just something about him annoys me. He may say the same about me if he ever met me. I’m just saying…

Rickster™ © ® – all three saves stunk, but the worst was Cheese Puff Daddy (aka Mike Lynche). They should do away with the save or the wild card picks, but in my mind they should do away with both. The judges get to pimp their favorites every week so why should they have a save? Randy said “America got it wrong” about Casey, but the save did very little for Matt or Cheese Puff Daddy. Doubt it will do much for Casey as well.

Okay, so here is who I’d like to see eliminated:

Over the next two weeks: Naima, then Stefano. Not a fan of the “wild card” system. That would leave 9.

The two weeks after that we could say goodbye to Paul and Casey, in no particular order. That leaves 7.

To balance things out we’d then we’d get rid of two girls: Haley and Jacob. That leaves 5.

The following week we bid Thia farewell. That leaves 4.

We then allow James, Lauren, Pia, and Scotty duke it out for the championship.

Hey y’all….

I might be the only one here (Sam-A, might agree?) who thinks that Casey shouldn’t have been saved. He’s been one of my faves, but when he was told he was saved, he looked like he was going to collapse on stage. I saw genuine fear on Ryan’s face. Is this a good thing to do to this kid?

Conspiracy theory: I like Casey and I think he’s talented, but I also think he needs to take care of his health first. How convenient that he gets eliminated the night that Ryan makes such a big deal about going on the tour…and then Casey gets booted and saved. And they’re ALL going on tour! Which, sure it’s technically, the top 11…but really, how many shows will Casey be able to do? It almost feels like a convenient way to make sure they have the “draw” of everyone left. (No one was really going to be jumping on the “must see the tour” bandwagon for Ashton or Karen, imo)

♥ kelly&carriefan ♥

March 25th, 2011
10:22 am

PS. As far as next week, well, 80s night could be super cheesy fun. (e.g., Kelly sang It’s Raining Men for her 80s tune…oh, the hilarity). I loved the 80s (what I remember, ha) so I’m thinking I’ll have to take a stab at a song suggestion list.

My top 5: Lauren, Pia, Scotty, James..and a distant 5th, Stefano.

I’m on the same team with K&CF and Sam-A.

Casey’s gone Kim Jong-il on us and peaked during Hollywood week.

I have to disagree that Mike Lynche didn’t benefit from “The Save” (as opposed to “The Event.”)

He would have gone home in 9th place, but was saved and made it to 4th before being ousted.

Matt (who wouldn’t have even been in the competition except for a wild card selection) got saved at 7th and made it only to 5th place.

And did anyone else notice how angry the judges seemed to be when it was announced Casey was low vote getter?

Were they made at America? Or at Casey for putting them in the situation to have to use their save?

Based on their comments… I’m leaning more towards the latter.

The judges looked peeved at having to use the save. It makes me wonder whether they really wanted to use it or were “encouraged” by “uncle Nigel?”

Sam-A

K&C: with ya on the wasted save! All 3 saves have been wasted on limited talents. Bet that “previously agreed’ deal about 11 on tour happened when the judges figured out who we’d gotten rid of (many of us at least had hoped we would).

I can’t quite make a “top 5″, but my top 3 are Pia, Lauren, James. Scotty is a lot like Casey, very limited range and style, with very few established artists of their type to pull songs from.

On an entirely different note, to all you homeowners in ATL, Pikes is having a big deal tonight only, from 5:00-8:00, serving hors d’oeuvres and Champaigne, with 20% off all plants. Good deal, and it’s time/weather for planting at last.

Rickster™ © ®

I have no doubt whatsoever that they would use the save on Casey.

I’m betting that when Casey started singing, Randy leaned over and said, “Yo, dawgs. We’re using the save, right? I mean… him? Going? Whaaaaaaat?” (Or something like that.) :-)

Nigel wouldn’t even have had time to send a test message.

If Lynche can go from 9th to 4th with the save… I think it’s possible for Casey to make the Top 5.

Haley and Stefano should both go before Casey – as could Naima.

That takes us to 8.

Paul should go before Casey. Jacob could easily go too. (His performances are too over-the-top for some – including me.)

That takes us to 6.

After that.. (well… during the whole thing) it’s song choice and song performance. As good as most of these folks are… anyone could go home if they have an off week.

If Casey keeps going the way he has (Dark, Angry, Growling) he could go home next week. Which might not be such a bad thing… so he could have any needed surgery & recuperate prior to the tour.

Haley wasn’t in the bottom 3 because she learned how to get the votes… at least from one small section of voters. The “leg vote” will get her to at least 8th place. And don’t get me started on the hair. Haley don’t need to sing. Just sayin.

Sam, Senoia is a lovely, very tiny town(at least the old section). Mostly what they’ve opened is a little arty store, a pub, a nice restaurant. I’ve been to the pub…very good. To put its size in perspective, you could walk from the top of Main Street to the bottom in less than 10 minutes. It has a terrific furniture store. It might be worth a trip, especially since you can also partake of the other towns in the area. Fayetteville has the oldest, still used, courthouse in GA plus the Doc Holliday House. On the west side of Peachtree City is a lovely antique store with a tea room attached.

Here’s a humorous take on Idol, from Tracy Curtis of the Charlotte Observer:

Bracketology for ‘American Idol’

Posted: Friday, Mar. 25, 2011

Tracy Curtis

Filling out my NCAA tournament bracket, I can’t help thinking that this is how “American Idol” should be set up. Four regions of seeded singers, trying to advance to the Final Four in LA. It makes more sense.

You start the first round with 64 singers. In each region, you have 16 singers, who have been seeded by Elton John, Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, and Jon Stewart. I don’t know why Jon Stewart, I just think he’ll do a good job.

Exit Ryan Seacrest. Enter … basketball commentator Dick Vitale, who gives us stats on the singers, song choice, vocal coaches and injuries. He makes his pick – Duke – oops. They go to commercial and Seacrest fetches him a Coke. He’ll get the hang of it.

Dickie V picks the genre for the first round of the competition – Songs With The Word “Baby” In Them. Then the No.1 seed sings against the No. 16 seed, No. 2 sings against No. 15, etc. And viewers vote on each match-up. This either picks off the riff-raff, or we get to enjoy some very big upsets.

Now down to 32, the singers are asked to pick their favorite song. But Vitale takes possession at the top of the show, and tells them to switch songs with their opponent. Here we see a few fouls and some poor sportsmanship. But everybody wants to advance, and so they all try to maintain some team spirit.

To the Sweet 16 – where two sets of regions finally come face to face. Dick allows an assist – they can play an instrument. But they have to sing on a shot clock – only 35 seconds to make it your own.

The next round brings the final eight all together, and Dickie V announces the first ever Elite Eight Unplugged. No band accompaniment – they sing a cappella – a slam-dunk for viewers judging pitch and tone. And of course, anyone with a No. 1 seed still on their bracket.

Then they all meet in LA for the Final Four, where they each sing the national anthem. Dick throws it out of bounds and makes it a duet – double-teaming them with their favorite college basketball Idol, backed up by their favorite band. (I would sing with Duke’s Jay Bilas, backed by Weezer, which would totally rock, by the way.)

And for the championship, the two finalists perform the half-time show at the NCAA Finals in Houston. CBS would have to give Fox permission to simulcast, but Dick can work all that out. He’s in like, nine halls of fame, he knows everybody.

The winner still gets a recording contract, ESPN runs the highlights, and the runner-up becomes a free agent and gets a Dick Vitale bobble head.

Awesome, Baby!

What was the name of the other girl who didn’t make the top 24 after trying out like 7 times? She gave the double barreled finger to the cameras? I really thought she deserved a shot over Thia…forgot her name though. Must not have made that big of an impression!

I was thinking of a song where he could use his power and range. Your suggestion?

By the way, if I muffed that last one with Jacob, what about the other 10?

Eye of the Tiger doesn’t need a powerful voice like Jacob’s.

I gave one earlier…..Just Once by James Ingram….would allow him to show his passion, emotion and pipes. Just don’t ruin the Rocky theme song for me! lol

Just went thru a list of “top 10’s – ’80’s” – don’t like too much from that decade! No wonder I was listening to oldies even back then! These are just about the only songs I really liked:

Every Tim You Go Away – Paul Young
Time After Time – Cindi L
What’s Love Got to Do With It – Tina T (maybe Pia could break out with this one)
Missing You – John Waite
Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
Say, Say, Say – Sir Paul (with [yuck] Michale J)
Just Like Starting Over – John Lennon of course

For me there were pretty slim pickin’s – Milli Vanilli, Madonna, Hall & Oates, et al – UGH!

Speaking of ruining “Eye of the Tiger” – I visited Japan once and made my way to a karaoke bar (only to observe) when that song came up…….nuff said.
