TMZ reports: ‘Idol’ contestants move out of ‘haunted’ mansion

“Ghost Hunters” alert! TMZ reports that “Idol” contestants moved out of the mansion they were placed in because of paranormal activity.

Among the problems: a leaky roof, a spider infestation, flickering lights and get this: several contestants claimed they saw a bed sheet float down an empty hallway. They demanded a new home and were sent their way to an undisclosed location.

This, I have to say, is beyond bizarre!

Well, spiders and leaks and faulty lights have nothing to do with a place being haunted and more to do with poor maintenance by the owner.

As to the floating sheet…hmmmm…let’s chalk that one up to a practical joke or sleep deprivation and fever hallucinations.

It is probably a foreclosed property owned by some bank that Idol is renting… Probably had issues they didn’t know about.

Good morning.

Casey = good

Tia – Great

Jacob – Safe song, but he did good. His last two notes reminded me of Louis Armstrong. He was the only one to get a standing O from the judges.

Lauren – ok with my favorite, Ms. Diana Ross

Stefano – the song was too freaking safe for him.

Haley – didn’t sing with the compassion that song required.

Scotty – boring (and I like him)

Pia – WTH. She sang that song too slowly.

Niama – she nailed the song!

As much as I like STyler, he needs to bury the word “beautiful!!!”

A floating sheet? Really? So our batch of Idol contestants are dumb this year. Talented, but dumb.

Ahem… did I or did I not say last week that that fake Roman villa looked like an unsuccesful spec pile? Probably built on top of Indian burial ground. There actuallyis a house like that out in LA that has been sitting empty for years – ocasionally taken over by devil worshippers and such likes,.

Saw idols sing twice, second time showed hubby just the contestants. The only kids he saw the whole performances from were Lauren, Jacob and James; everything else was “FF” after a few notes.

“occasionally”…

My current Top Eleven, after last night’s “Motown” (and only half of the songs were Motown quality imho):

1. James – an enjoyable performance
2. Lauren – “the whole package”
3.Jacob – managed to rein himself in
4. Scotty- climbed out of his box, picked a “different” song. and dragged it back in box with him
5. Paul – yes, Paul is growing on me. I give quirk a chance.
6. Thia – kudos for going NON-ballad. Listens to judges.
7.Casey – slowly fading…one trick pony.
8.Pia – Booo for sticking to ballads. And that that’s ok with judges,
9. Haley – too concerned with outfit and keeping balance on those heels going down steps. She needs to take control of her look. Surely she doesn’t want to look like Sheen angel?
10. Naima – it’s a singing contest!!
11. Stefano – catastrophic song choice, velveeta-ish perf.

Trying to post in parts… since PacMan has eaten my post – twice. (He must be hungry this AM)

Sorry I wasn’t able to post in the previous thread. But here goes:

Two disclosures:

1. Mrs. Rickster had the remotes, so I couldn’t FF through anything.
2. I feel like I was watching an entirely different show than the judges (or Rodney or most of you) seemed to have watched. Welcome to Bizzaro World (or maybe an alternate universe.)

Casey: Hated his performance. Tiring of him very quickly. Very dark persona on stage. I don’t like dark.

Thia: Still love her voice… but she hasn’t had a breakthrough moment.

Jacob: Hated this one too. The song was bad enough without the facial gymnastics and the “bunny hands” thing.

Lauren: Who woulda thunk one of my favorite performances on Motown Week would be given by a teen aged girl from rural GA with an accent as thick as sorghum syrup?

Stefano: A technically amazing performance, with absolutely no heart, soul or emotion.

Haley: Please… go home already.

Scotty: Getting on my nerves with the head bobs & such. A bit smarmy. Have to close my eyes & listen, not watch.

Pia: If she doesn’t have the best female voice (clean, pure, powerful) to grace the Idol stage, she’s definitely the best since Carrie. But move already!

Paul: Not saying much, but his best so far. But I still don’t “get it.”

Naima: Still hasn’t shown me anything to justify using the wild card to keep her.

James: Powerful voice? Check. Amazing range? Check. Ability to strip a great song of the edge and grit and heart and soul and everything that made it a classic? Check.

The best voice of the night: Pia. Get used to it. She has the best voice in the group.

Best dance award: Naima.

Worst dance award: Naima.

Only-dancer-of-the-night award: Naima

Whitest teeth award: Paul, in a blowout

Growl of the night: Casey. He has won this award each week so far.

@Confused: I think James has a great voice. I just don’t like what he does with it.

If you listen to Stevie’s version v. James’ version – there’s no comparison. There’s not heart, grit, soul, emotion, in James’ performance. He tends to hit the high notes just because he can… not because it adds anything to the song. (Personally, I think it detracts more than it adds.)

Guess we can agree to disagree…I was on board with your opinion early on in the competition until he sang “Maybe I’m Amazed”….now I am hooked. And I do think GnR would be great for him. Truly I am hoping he gets to do the duet with Steven Tyler at the finale’.

I have the hots for Pia…but she needs to branch out.

I am OVER Casey…haven’t been a big fan from the start…maybe to the fact that he appeals to a niche’ and I am not in that niche’.

Scotty is what he is. GREAT at his style. He needed AI to get exposure…that has happened. Whether he wins or not will have no bearing…he will get a deal.

I love Lauren…but I fear she is slipping into the crowd…

Ready for Naima to GO…ugh.

Halley is nice to look at…REALLY nice to look at…and has some talent…but I think she has no base.

Thia needs to go audition for Disney.

Stefano…HELLO? SERIOUSLY??? If I listened to it in the 80s is it REALLY Motown?

Paul is just odd.

And I am beyond past Jacob…last night he did well…but his dramatics are a huge turn off.

On another note…

I went to YouTube & watched David Cook’s version of “Hello.” VASTLY superior to Stefano’s.

Also noticed that David had the whole “tail” thing working. (That was three years ago?)

So James dresses like David Cook… and sings like “the guy who finished second to Kris Allen (you know… Kris, the guy who actually won?”

I guess a guy could do worse. But does that really tell us who he is as an artist?

Deirdre

Re Is it really Motown….the contestants are given a list of songs to choose from. The show provides the list. Lionel Ritchie was on the Motown label so, while you and I know better about what’s really Motown and what really isn’t, you can’t blame a contestant who wasn’t even born when Motown was king for picking a song from a list the show gave him.

That being said…after David Cook turned that sappy song into something truly beautiful, you’d think Stefano would have avoided it like the plague!

When both James and Lauren finished their songs, my initial thought was: I want to see more of them, hear more from them.

And I wish they’d allow Haley do dress her own darn self. Yesterday’s skanky look was an insult to the cute girl I’m sure she is. Hobbling down that staircase in heels she can’t master (anytime a girl bends her knees like that, she’s too young for heels), those unforgiving hotpants… bad,

American Idol’s Secret Weapon: Marc Anthony

Mar 24, 2011 12:30 PM ET
by Deborah Starr Seibel

Record-company executive Jimmy Iovine may be getting the lion’s share of the credit for working with American Idol’s Season 10 contestants. But the singers revealed after the show Wednesday night there is another music-industry heavyweight who’s been coaching behind the scenes: Jennifer Lopez’s husband, Marc Anthony.

“A lot of the struggle that had been going on in prior performances was that we hadn’t adjusted to the ‘In Ears,’” says Naima Adedapo, referring to the custom-made earpieces that singers often use to balance out sound levels when they’re singing with a live band on a big stage. Most of the contestants performed with the earpieces for the first time last week during their second performance.

“We couldn’t really hear ourselves,” says Adedapo. “We were having ‘pitchy’ problems. But Marc Anthony took the time to sit with us one on one and say, ‘Okay, how does it sound, how does it feel?’ It added so much.”

Part of the adjustment is that a singer can wear one earpiece, two — or none at all. “You can have two but I chose one because I still like to have that live vibe,” says Haley Reinhart. “A lot of us have taken out our ‘In Ears’ because we’re like, ‘We’ll just go the natural route because we’re not used to them.’”

But, says Casey Abrams, Anthony’s coaching made a big difference. “Tonight was my first try with ‘In Ears’ and Marc Anthony really helped us out.”

Says Reinhart, “Getting this feedback and lessons from Marc? It was awesome.”

RxDawg

March 24th, 2011
2:06 pm

Huh, cool info about Marc helping them out. It just reinforces that J Lo got into this because they actually care.

I got a theory about Casey. Wanna hear it? Well here it goes..

Casey is one of the most musicaly intelligent contestants to ever grace Idol. He’s a master musician. Kris Allen also was vastly underrated in this same department but it was something I picked up on very early that season. And I think it was the tipping point that allowed him to win. Now, Casey came out so strong that now he’s letting everyone down so to speak just because he’s doing some different kind of things. Well, maybe he’s doing that because he knows he can right now. It’s not like he’s being threatened by anyone right now to be removed from the show. So now would be the time to showcase some different stuff. Take HUGE risks, cough Nirvana cough. Why? Because he safely get’s to show how versatile he is. When the talent and competetion weeds out the wannabes then he can go back to doing what made us all love him to begin with. It’s actually not that far fetched at all and would be quite brilliant because it could give him momentum towards the end. I know it’s something I would do as an early front runner.

I do hafta admit… my premise about this season producing a very talented winner (as opposed to the last two seasons) with the chance for a big career seems to be panning out.

Season One: Kelly (’nuff said.)
Season Two: Ruben (moderately successful – primarily Broadway)
Season Three: Fantsleasia (Train wreck, any one?)
Season Four: Carrie (Yes!)
Season Five: Taylor (Wasn’t he the guy that….)
Season Six: Jordin (Still waiting for her big breakthrough)
Season Seven: David Cook (First, best and most successful WGWG winner)
Season Eight: Kris Allen: (Wasn’t he the guy that…)
Season Nine: Lee DeWyze: (WGWG v 3.0)

With two seasons between a very talented winner, Season 10 should bring us one as well. So far… I like its chances.

JuAl

I liked Casey in the beginning but he is starting to get on my nerves.

Pia, move already. Agreed with JLo, it would be a boring concert for two hours to just watch her stand there. Apparently they don’t teach that at the school for “performing arts”.

James I thought was the best of the night.

Hayley, what’s with the hot pants? Please get with someone to show you how to move around the stage before you get hurt.

Confused, I noticed the microphone switching last night too. Clay Aiken did the same thing. Didn’t realize they were so heavy.

I’m saying the bottom three will be Thia, Haley and a toss up between Stefano and Lauren. But I wish Paul and Casey would get in there and maybe bring them back down and rethink a few things. When Paul sang the duet in Hollywood I thought he was good…..now…well.

I thought it was interesting speculation over on Joe’s Place about the possibility that The Save could not happen tonight. Here is the quote from Joe’s Place:

” Since tonight is the determination of the top 10 – those making the tour – the judges could not use The Save and have a double elimination next week. it would then go from 11 to 9 – thus never having a top 10. The only way a Save could be used tonight is if the Double Elimination is put off for another week.”

She wasn’t voted in to the Top 10, and if she gets booted (hopefully tonight) there is no way the save should be used for her. That would essentially give her a third chance move on.

My pick for the top three contestants the judges will use the “save” for:

1. Naima
2. Jacob
3. Casey

Rate the judges:

Worst: JLo. She won’t shut up. She probably takes 1 or 2 minutes to get her point (if she even has a point) across. And when Randy actually offers something other than glowing reviews, she talks over him. Can her and get someone else next year.

Second: Steven Tyler. I thought surely a Rock legend like Aerosmith’s lead singer would offer some very constructive criticisms. Instead, he ususally says “beautiful” or some other contrived praise. I like some of his witty remarks, but he often seems bored or detached.

First: Randy. Who would have thunk that this guy might be the best judge on the panel. Still too many “yo yos” and “dog…” but he will actually offer something other than feigned praise.

I’ve been disappointed with the judges for the most part.

Deirdre

March 24th, 2011
3:29 pm

I disagree about JLo…yes, sometimes she says to much but many times, what she says is a valid and kindly put criticism. Example: after Stefano did Hello last night, she very rightly made the point that the feeling isn’t there. Yes, he’s passionate about doing well but she’s not getting that he’s passionate about the story in the song. And instead of telling him how bad that is…she told him to find that passion and he’ll be unstoppable.

I do, however agree about Randy….no longer #3 judge, he has come into his own realizing that we want to hear what he has to say. He is no longer the “other” judge sitting beside loopy Paula and the guy who everyone paid attention to, Simon. He’s decided he can earn our respect…and he’s doing it.

As for Steven…I love the wit and the devil in his eyes but he needs to be braver about telling someone when to rethink their strategy. I don’t think he’s bored so much as he’s at a loss for what to say.

Sam-A

March 24th, 2011
3:34 pm

I too am disappointed in JLO and ST. ST really needs to figure out that piling erroneous praise on these kids is not helping them in the long run – and I can only remember one show where he actually gave any actual criticisms and he was always the 3rd to speak at the time, after the others had actually criticized the singers. JLO is even stickier/sweeter than Paula at her worst. and the way she keeps reaching out and pointing to the kids, as well as singing along with them – how very distracting that must be for most of them!

Deirdre

March 24th, 2011

I don’t agree with Joe’s Place about the save either(I’m being very disagreeable today)

The double elimination is usually done in order according to votes. Therefore, the person with the least votes would be considered out at top 11 and the person with the next to least votes would be in the top 10.

Deirdre

March 24th, 2011
3:45 pm

Almost all the contestants who are left can sing…we may not like all of them but they CAN sing….so the judges’ focus must be on their phrasing, their emotional connection, their stage presence, their song choices. JLo was doing that last night. I think she’s becoming one of the better judges that Idol has seen…which really surprises me.

Sam-A

March 24th, 2011
3:57 pm

Dierdre, your “disagreeability” has rubbed off on me. I cannot agree that “they CAN sing”. What Paul is doing is certainly not by any standard I’ve ever seen called “singing”, nor are Casey’s latest offerings really, tho last night’s came closer than the past few weeks have been. Some of the other’s are a bit sketchy too, but these two just really are in a league below Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan in these, their later years, when their voices are quite less than melodious and pleasant!

I hope they only use the save when it is for somebody who could actually WIN the thing. Giving Naima a save would be wasting it…she is NOT going to win. I would use it for someone like Laura, Scott, James, or Pia if it came down to it…

By “they can sing” I mean , they can carry a tune. They can all do that…they may not carry it well…but they carry it.

One man’s Celine Dion is another man’s Charo. Taste in singing styles is not the same as the basic mechanics of singing. Paul can carry a tune. So can Casey. you don’t have to like it but to some people, it’s singing. I like Casey’s singing…mostly. I don’t like Paul’s singing.

Ales…how about Snow Blind White

I wish some of them, mainly Jacob, Naimi, Paul, would carry their tunes right on off the show and into never never again land!

Here I go again. Yes, Pia can sing. But, being an idol means more than just singing. It requires a whole package. Little Thia can sing and has a pure voice. She doesn’t belt which Pia can do by throwing her head back to belt at the ceiling and screeching her lungs out. Ugh! Also, what is with the waving arms up and down, up and down, up and down throughout the whole song . She is female George Bush Sr. stressing his thousand points of light. The woman must have some personality because she romps and wrestles with the guys. Her performances, not so much! A lounge singer, yes! A big band singer, yes!
An idol; I think not. Give me the kids making mistakes, but trying their hearts out. At least I’m not bored. Pia comes across as, “I’m a lady and much beyond all of this, but by being here I’m doing everyone a favor.”
