Lee DeWyze’s new video for ‘Sweet Serendipity,’ trailer for Jennifer Hudson’s ‘Winnie’

I almost felt bad yesterday that I didn’t bother to note that Lee DeWyze’s debut post-”Idol” album came out yesterday. (Remember him?)  So to make up for that, here’s the video for his song. It’s actually not a bad song.

VH1 TV Shows | Music Videos | Celebrity Photos | News & Gossip

- Jennifer Hudson portray’s Winnie Mandela in the upcoming biopic about her. Here’s a trailer:

- Carrie Underwood’s “Mama’s Song” daily update: For the first time since I started tracking this more than a month ago, Carrie’s song has lost airplay spins week over week. From Nov. 11-17, the song received 5,588 spins, down 33 spins from Nov. 4-10. It’s at No. 11 (though No. 10 adjusted for audience size). Does this mean the song is going to be the first Underwood single not to make the top 2 on the country chart? Probably. If I know for sure her song is not going to rise any further, I will post a separate blog entry noting that when I said it could be her first “radio failure,” I was only half right. A top 10 single is not a failure by any stretch of the imagination but it would by far be her lowest charting single in five years by a long shot.

Ttrailer for “Winnie” pretty pedestrian, but movie has some excellent actors, and I really look forward to seeing it.

On front AJC “page”, the story “KY Men Sentenced in Bizarre Beard-eating Case” is what gives the South such a bad rep.

JT, questions and all, your trip to Seattle sounds very “holiday” and sweetly yesteryear to me.

Thanksgiving for me will be a trip to Charlotte, NC to my 90 year-old aunt’s house. Every year for the last ten or so, I have been allowing her to host Thanksgiving in her home, inviting whomever she wishes, and I do all the cooking. Sadly, this will be our last gathering in her home, or so she says, as she is considering a move to a senior living place. She is in excellent health, but has slowed appreciably in this last year. I think she will feel safer at Merrywood. I love seeing her excitement as she plays host to everyone. I tell her that her job is to entertain everyone and keep them out of “my” kitchen!

Nana, where are you? We need your usual list of delicious things you will prepare.

D-i-l sent me You Tube video of man forced to eat his beard. Dribkin’ and fightin’ and lawn mowers and men who talk “fir I knowed it” – must be the makings of a country song in there.

Thanksgiving for me involves driving to Wilmington island outside Savannah (4,5 hrs), where oldest son and d-i-l will meet up from D.C. with their two small dogs, a frisky chihuahua and a deaf papillon. Youngest son stays in Durango, Col. Sad. Brined turkey from Whole Foods ( a first) will be carried down, packed in ice, plus ingredients for sweet potato casserole, ditto squash, and blackberry crumble pie.

Hmm, so I like the song….but for some reason, Lee’s voice does nothing for me. I wish I could pinpoint exactly what it is. (No, it’s not because he’s a guy, har har.) Honestly, I think if Kris Allen or David Cook sang this, I could see myself listening to it quite a bit. More so, Kris as this song seems to fit what I’d like for him to sing. Disclaimer: I wasn’t a Kris fan during his season, but he’s grown on me.

Maybe that’s my problem with Lee? He feels to similar to Kris for me, and I think Kris is more talented. Hmm.

But anyway, so Mama’s Song is losing steam? Do we know yet if there’s going to be another single off of Play On? I don’t see anything yet on All Access. Granted, I don’t have access to the whole site…

OH! Speaking of airplay, I heard Don’t You Wanna Stay on 94.9 The Bull yesterday afternoon. It was # 2 on their “Drive Home” countdown. Now that it’s officially Jason’s 2nd single, I’m sure it’ll start taking off.

Rodney, you are correct—-Lee’s song is not bad at all.
Here’s hoping he (Lee) resonates more with the rest of the world than he does this blog. If not, his career is toast in just a short while!

The thing that got me about the beard-eating man (yes it hit our local news up here) was the dudes hat! Way to represent the South there buddy. Oh and maybe due to it being early, but Mercedes when you wrote “KY men” I didn’t initially think Kentucky. I guess my mind tracks a bit different.

I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving, even if it is abbreviated. I’ll be here until then, but now seems like a good time to say it.

They may not have beard-eaters up North, but how’s this for crazy:

An NYU professor is getting a camera surgically implanted in the back of his head for several months. It’s part of an art project commissioned by the Qatar government, and called “The 3rd I”.
A camera, according to the WSJ, “will take pictures at one minute intervals, with the images being streamed to a computer database and then appearing in different sequences, some in real time, on monitors in an exhibition space in Doha, Qatar.”

The professor, Iraqi-born Wafaa Bilal, “provoked controversy with earlier projects, including one in 2008 called ‘Virtual Jihadi’, in which he altered a video game to insert an avatar of himself as a suicide bomber targeting George W. Bush.”

Sam-A – it was kind of slow. Then again, I remember the book had a whole lot of seemingly aimless wanderings in the wilderness. The final movie should be a humdinger, though. Elf was best. Kiss HP and Hermione pretty good too. All three lead kids have grown up nicely.

Well, Nigel is sure shaking things up, isn’t he? Good morning!

I am listening, finally, to Lee’s whole album, and I think I agree with whomever compared his sound to Kris, with Kris being the more talented of the two. Wasn’t it you, Dierdre? Anyway, most of the songs are peppy and non-offensive, but just do not stand out for me. The listening booth site allows you to listen to an entire album over and over, should you wish. I don’t wish in this case. ;)

It may have been the reviewer Mercedes linked us to yesterday. Actually, D, though I do not like Lee, there are two pretty good songs on the album. The one I especially liked is “Me and My Jealousy.” Don’t know why they did not choose it for his first release. He does a Plain White Tee’s imitation on one called “Dear Isabelle,” as well. That’s my take. Now I am through listening. :)

Everybody following the Bristol Palin scandal? Amazing how this is getting people riled up. After seeing the two “stars”, Bristol and Brandy (both likker names!), dance (I’m not a “DWTS” follower), injustice, caused by trick voting from teabaggers, obviously robbed the better dancer of her moment at the finals.

Oh well. After Adam’s loss, and the recent “Project Runway” scandal, I now realize “reality” shows are rigged, one way or another.

Still will watch “Idol”, though.

Deirdre

November 18th, 2010
8:31 am

I agree that people who might vote for Sarah are voting for Bristol but I think there is also a huge backlash from the voters over the way Bristol is getting trashed by the likes of Joy Behar. Keep in mind how people tended to vote in favor of a singer if Simon trashed him/her.

“rigged?” Don’t get me started. An election(of any kind) always appears to be rigged if the guy I’m voting for doesn’t win.

Sam-A

Harriett: Bad news for The Event – after the show at end of Nov, it’s being taken off the air for 3 months, which means we’ll all have forgotten what was going on when it disappeared. That always tends to spoil shows for me.

You should give “Chuck” on NCB at 8:00 a change. I find it sweet, funny, charming. Don’t usually go for the nerdy type, but love the guy who plays Chuck.

kelly&carriefan

November 18th, 2010
9:49 am

Good morning, y’all.

Well, I’m not sure if a reviewer compared Lee to Kris, but I did too.

I’ve read all of Nigel’s proposed changes…and all I can think is, “Ummmm, what?!” Most importantly, if there’s no Top 24, how are we going to get a Top 12? Are the judges choosing the Top 12? If so, I’m not liking the having less of a choice. I mean, as much of a “choice” as we get on these voter-based shows. ;)

Oh, and music videos? Dancing? WHAT? Is this Burlesque Boot Camp or American Idol? I don’t think Nigel gets it. Idol needs to go back to it’s roots, imo.

I do think the idea of changing the Themes to decades might work, provided it doesn’t get repetitive and the contestants don’t choose the same tired old songs we hear every.single.season.

As far as DWTS…I’m surprised that Bristol is still in, but are we sure people just didn’t vote for Brandy ’cause they didn’t like her? I’m not saying Bristol is more likeable, but at least she hasn’t killed anyone (that we know of!).

Mercedes S.

November 18th, 2010

k&cfan, Brandy killed someone? What?

Harriett

November 18th, 2010

Sam, I hate when they do that with a show. But, I won’t forget. I love that show! Just don’t bring it back in the middle of Idol! I have heard Chuck is pretty good, but I think I would need a tutorial to catch up or understand what is going on.

KCF, it probably was you that compared Lee to Kris. If you have a chance, or the inclination, go onto listening booth and hear some of the other songs, especially the two I mentioned. It did not change my mind, nor make me want to buy, but I was curious.

kelly&carriefan

Mercedes, she was involved in a car accident back in 2006 that resulted in a fatality. However, she was not charged. Early on, people speculated that she’d gotten off easy. Evidence does suggest that she wasn’t completely responsible. But some people still have doubts. She has been involved in three lawsuits as a result. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/22421653/ns/today-entertainment

Harriett, I’ll give it a listen and share my opinion.

Sam-A

November 18th, 2010
10:28 am

Harriett: If you ever decide to try “Chuck”, I can give you a couple paragraphs for background. When USA Today ran poll of a number of likely-to-be-cxls shows, and asked for “save this show” votes, “Chuck” got more votes than all the other shows combined.

Dierdre: Great news for Maggie. Hope she recovers fully and is more careful in the future.

The Brandy story is sad (not at all like the situation with the gal here who killed 5 people and ran and hid her car). The point is she was really good, and Bristol truly sux . Not even sure how she’s on the show – there is nothing “star” about her. Even the lowest “stars” on this show have at least some connection to entertainment, except for that idiot congressman last year. The show is certainly going down the toilet! Glad I have Chuck and The Event for my entertainment.

kelly&carriefan

November 18th, 2010
10:39 am

D, that’s great news for you and Maggie. Here’s hoping she’s back to her old self in no time.

However, most of the country also thinks that Palin is a putz. It’s a conundrum.

Deirdre

November 18th, 2010

It IS very weird, JT. I think it’s more about what she represents than who she is. The country is “in a mood” right now and that mood might translate into Bristol Palin of the not too graceful feet winning DWTS.

Heck, Lee DeWyze won American Idol so why should we be surprised?

Harriett

I still think Kyles cuteness and progress as a dancer will make him the winner. He was the underdog for quite awhile and people really love him. He’s done a great job, too, with his dancing, listening and learning from the criticism each week.

I just had to respond to all of you and I know many agree with you but I am one of Lee’s older generation fans – over 50 – and I think Lee has a unique and refreshingly distinct sound. His prior albums are filled with songs I love and most of the songs on the album bring out that raspy voice. The bonus release Only Dreaming, Me and My Jealousy, Stay, and Beautiful Like You are all great songs. What I like about Lee is he reminds me of Harry Chapin (I know most of you are too young) but he was just a simple guy who was a great storyteller and songwriter whose songs you could relate to and were absent of cursing or illicit sex. Harry would walk out with his guitar even when those that opened for him had full bands. I think Lee will find success as more and more people hear him and I am sure that his days of singing at bars is over! So while he may not be as successful as those he went against this week – Beetles, Susan Boyle, etc., he will be earning 1000 times what he did in that paint store! I for one will buy anything he records and wish him the best!

Lee sounds too much like about half a dozen other singers out there. Nothing out of the ordinary. The song ain’t too bad. I expect him to be the least remembered, least successful AI winner of all time. Bless his heart.
