Nigel Lythgoe touts a 15 year old, gets flak

nigel-lythgoe

MJ has been following Nigel Lythgoe’s tweets about the Nashville callbacks. He is apparently getting heat for touting a 15 year old who could win season 10.

He felt a need to defend himself, first with this:

Wow people talking about pimping and rigging because I liked a 15 year old. I didn’t mention male or female or name them. You’re really SICK

Then this:

There was an incredible 16 year old in Milwaukee too. Don’t knock the young guns ’till you’ve heard them. I bet you’ll be shocked.

To make up for it, he mentioned a 28 year old late yesterday.

A 28 year-old stole the honors in today’s auditions. Absolutely stunning with a real Aretha Franklin feel to her voice.

There are a lot of fans of this show (me included) who was not big on lowering the eligibility age. We’re worried we’ll be seeing too many singers who are not ready for prime time, who may have good voices but have no clue who they are yet because they’re, well, just 15. Even Justin Bieber spent years prepping before he became a star.

- Top selling digital track this week is “September” by Daughtry. That song is at No. 22 on the top 40 charts, according to Mediabase 24/7. It’s No. 2 on the Hot AC chart and No. 1 on the AC chart.

On the urban charts, Fantasia’s “I’m Doin’ Me” is at No. 27. It’s No. 14 on the urban AC chart (while “Bittersweet” is at No. 3).

Chris Sligh on the Christian AC chart is at No. 13 with “Only You Can Save.”

- Daily Carrie Underwood “Mama’s Song” country radio airplay update: the song is still at No. 14. She edges up to 5,012 spins for Oct. 20-26, an increase of 244 spins from Oct. 13-19. She’s now 456 spins behind Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party.” Her week-over-week spin increase has slowed down the past couple of days.

- Season four finalist Jessica Sierra has released a single. She was last seen doing “Celebrity Rehab.” Hopefully, she’s clean now but she looks a bit rough. This song has no particular hook. Can you find one?

Re Jessica…just that picture alone makes it look like she still needs rehab!

Re Nigel: I don’t like the lower age group either but jumping down Nigel’s back for pimping this early is just plain silly!

Does anyone else Nigel is just a bit too defensive?

It’s not hooky. Nor is it catchy. It’s not smart nor is it hip. The way she’s swerved out of her lane, I wonder if she’s still clean! :-)

She’s the anti-Noop!

Don’t remember Jessica AT ALL. Maybe she’d look better in her natural hair color? And: black nail polish is SO last year.

As for the song… hook? There is none.

And we thought Archie jumped the gun on releasing an autobiography!

Sixteen-year-old Bieber, who recently released his autobiography, said he’s “extremely humbled and honored” to be part of the show, which honors the most popular albums and artists.

Here’s a video of Jessica on Idol…to help tweak memories. She was top 10 but didn’t make it to top 9.

I guess an autobiography from a 16 year old would include things like his favorite Lego set, which fast food place is his favorite and how he’ll NEVER do drugs no matter how famous he becomes.

SIXTEEN? He can’t even add a chapter about his struggle with acne! (Unless, of course, we see him soon on TV pitching Pro-Activ!) :-)

Nigel, dial it back a little. We get it, exciting new season, but now you’re killing it before it even arrives.

I remember Jessica well; thought she had a strong voice that season. I liked her and that of course was the curse—-she was gone sooner than later! Maybe it’s my fault about the whole rehab thing???

Nigel is just keeping Idol in the news. He’ll be fine and so will the show. You’ll see.

Gotta go. Rodney and kelly&carriefan have a wonderful time tonight at Carrie’s concert. Be sure to take pics, give Carrie our love and tell her to stop by the blog sometime. Yeah, it could happen!!!

Oh, and thanks Mr Ho for our daily dose of Bieber! 8-)

Don’t get me wrong, I am the only person on the planet that supports expanding the age group, but I don’t want to hear about how great Nigel thinks someone is. Let me watch the show and decide for myself. Or I should say: let me watch the show and through proper editing I’ll be shown who you think is so great.

I think Nigel was just trying to generate a little excitement for the next season. It kinda blew up in his face. But then, I’ve never been a fan of the “judges are pimping” hue and cry. What? Are they not supposed to tell us who they like and who they don’t like?????

Your queeness…. IMO the judges are supposed to be objective observers and critics. They cross the line when they start promoting certain contestants like Simon did with Lee DeWyze (you know… the other winner nobody remembers other than…. oh…. what’s her name.)

Bleach blond now, bleach blond then … and she’s using the same, bad beautician! Good, strong voice on Idol clip – thanks, D. – but Simon was right when he talked about her lack of likeability.

I don’t agree, Rickster…they’re called judges by the show(despite linny’s insistence that they are “tators”) I think their purpose(given their titles) is to judge. I’m not happy that whatshisname won either but I think Simon may have, in his opinion, seen more commercial viability in whatshisname than in the better singer, Crystal. With Simon, it’s always been about what will sell, not who sings best.

We only object to “pimping” when we disagree with who is being pimped. And it’s also my opinion that the judges’ favorite, if not the audience favorite, loses votes as a result of said pimping.

Adding to that, I think most people vote for who they like best not who the judges like best. At least, I would hope that is the case.

judge/critic… means basically the same thing to me. They’re supposed to give their opinion on a contestant’s performance – not actively promote said contestant.

Personally, I wish they’d get rid of all the back story stuff. Just introduce the folks, let ‘em sing, and let the judges give their critiques.

Then, move on to the next contestant.

I don’t mind the post Top 12 pushing that the judges do, where I start to have a problem is prior to that.

The show promises a huge buffet of food, we’re talking Vegas style all encompassing food extravaganza. You go in hoping to be able to choose from a great variety, but then the host refuses to show you the great buffet and instead walks you by a small table filled with a decent selection of food, but by no means a huge diverse selection. Then after you are seated you are told that you don’t get to pick anything off that table, the chef has selected 24 items for you, 12 of them you have never heard of and the chef thinks that they aren’t any good (even though the chef selected them).

You were promised a huge buffet, but in reality you are only allowed to select from one of twelve items, from Filet mignon to rutabaga. Not much of a choice. In case you are wondering, Lee was billed as the steak, but as it turns out he’s just a turnip.

There have been hints that this season will have an expanded Hollywood Week…or buffet table, as the case may be.

When I said enough with the judges already I did not mean we should hear from the producer who pushes kids. Is hearing from Roman Polanski as the director next? And on the dancing celebrity program there were young girls dressed up as school girls ripping off their clothes with young boys dancing too. People get mad because a kid in Asia someplace is making shoes for pennies a day while right here on their own home ground kids are being exploited with the whole country watching them and it is called entertainment. Shame on these hypocrites.

Bad news! I slipped on my steps this morning and landed on my previously broken arm/wrist!

Good news! The previous implantation of the plate in my arm saved me from breaking my arm again!

Good luck Maggie!

I love the three judges format but I am not “in love” with the prospective replacements for Simon, Kara and Ellen
