Adam Lambert rocks out for a very enthusiastic Atlanta Symphony Hall crowd

CREDIT: Rodney Ho/rho@ajc.com

Adam Lambert tore down the roof at the very staid Atlanta Symphony Hall Tuesday night. And while the venue was a bit stuffy, Adam wasn’t in the least.

Fortunately, he tamed some of his worst tendencies we saw on “Idol” and that ill-fated American Music Awards performance. Heck, he didn’t even sing “For Your Entertainment.” It merely played on tape to open his hour-long set.

The show flowed well. He started dark, including a short version of “Ring of Fire,” his only cover of the night. He then did a few acoustic cuts. Then he did happier dance songs at the end, including his current his “If I Had You.” (He apparently has dropped “Whole Lotta Love” and “Mad World” from the set recently.) Adam’s brimming confidence and grace on stage made the show easy on the eyes. Overall, it was a visually stunning set (with a simple, yet effective, laser light show).

adam-snarlThe crowd included a few teens but mostly women in their 30s to 60s. (Not as many gays as you would imagine.) I do have to say it was one of the most enthusiastic audiences I’ve ever been in. Between opener Allison Iraheta and Adam, the song “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas got most everyone on their feet to dance, even some folks who are clearly receiving Social Security checks. People actually applauded after “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” and “Sexyback” were played.

Naturally, they stood throughout his entire set, even during his two lengthy costume breaks. (One was filled with dancers. The other, long guitar solos.).

He didn’t utilize that annoying massive scream of his. Rather, he would wail at times but in a way that wouldn’t break glass or break eardrums. I was very happy.

I almost didn’t get into the concert. Apparently, I had no tickets available at will call. And I forgot to bring the name of the person who supposedly set it up for me. A woman with Atlanta Symphony Hall told me this was set up by an outside company so she didn’t have the power to give me any tickets. She said she’d try and told me to wait by the entrance. Just moments before Allison was to start, one of the ticket takers asked me if I was coming in. I said I was having issues with my media access. She then handed me a spare ticket, no explanation given. I thanked her and took it.

I’ll provide more thoughts tomorrow morning. I just wanted to get a couple of videos up first:

Here is Adam singing “Whataya Want From Me” in acoustic form mid-way through the concert:

And here are three very big fans of Lambert (left to right- Andrea Beyer, Lois Gray and Kathy McClain) who were teens when Elvis Presley was big. These three Floridians drove six hours from the Melbourne, Fla. area and plan to see three more Lambert concerts in their state. Kathy later told me she also was a huge fan of Adam Ant in the 1980s.

And yes, there were younger folks there, too. Here was my vantage point at about 8:47 p.m., 12 minutes before he hit the stage while Justin Timberlake was playing over the loudspeakers:

Becky: “the mean people say to grow a thicker skin”

What have I said that is mean?

“The world is never going to change if people don’t speak up about what they think is right.”

Which is EXACTLY what the Adam detractors are doing. I’m confused, because they are speaking up about what they think is right, but since it disagrees with what you think is right you try to stop it. Doesn’t that make you a hypocrite?

Becky…a couple of people who are posting on here are regulars…this blog has been in existence since season 4 and it’s a blog about the show, not about individual singers. Occasionally an American Idol contestant will come to Atlanta and our blog host will go see the show and report back to us.

Our problems usually stem from fans of one particular Idol or another showing up and assuming that everyone here LOVES that particular Idol. Not true….it wouldn’t be true ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD either…just on that Idol’s fan sites. So here’s a scoop…not everyone LOVES Adam Lambert(I like him a lot but that’s just me) And when a newspaper(which this blog is part of) reports about Adam you will get responses from people who like him and who don’t like him.

As said before, if you don’t want to read negative stuff then go to a fan site. This is NOT a fan site.

Jelinda, Re Jackie on AGT…she seems like a nice little girl but watching her sing reminds me of watching one of those old horror movies where the voice of evil comes out of a child’s mouth. Her voice is lovely but just….wrong.

“He didn’t utilize that annoying massive scream of his.”

Rodney, Adam NEVER screams! When he hits those high notes in his amazing 4-octave vocal range, it is always on key and pitch perfect! That is NOT screaming!

Deirdre

CNB some people just don’t like high-pitched things, whether they’re on key or not. They hear it as a scream and it hurts their ears.

Different musical tastes. Why should it matter if the whole world doesn’t appreciate Adam as much as you do? He has a good solid fan base and should be successful.

Ha. I love the unnecessary hyperdefensiveness and “you must not have seen the crowd I saw” type comments whenever a reporter happens to mention the age of Adam’s fans. If there’s no shame in being 60 and being an Adam fan, why the defensiveness over how many seniors were in the audience? I’m sure Adam would like to wave a magic wand and have a younger, hipper crowd but he probably has figured the cougar money is as good as any other money.

One thing that I find interesting is how homophobic some of Adams fans are. The insistence on their part that a gay man needs to be coddled from any and all detractors whether homophobic or not is wrong. I’ve watched interviews with Adam, he is both intelligent and insightful, which is a lot more than I can say about his fans who have visited us today.

Deirdre, it is popcorn time.

Jelinda

September 15th, 2010
1:20 pm

@Deirdre……..hmmmmmmm now that might be the answer. Maybe a few months from now TMZ will blow the cover on the story and we’ll find out that Jackie is really 32 years old. Did you ever see that horror movie where this family adopted this girl from Russia and she was displaying all kinds of weird behavioral problems so the mom started doing research. Come to find out the girl had some kind of hormonal problem and she was really in her 30’s and left a string of tourched buildings where ever she resided. Lol!!

I don’t think I’ve talked about the original article once. I scolded a girl for thinking about staying out late on a school night and then talked about AGT. What was the article about? Oh yeah, the concert. That will bring me full circle again…..tonight’s concert is on a Wednesday night – yes a school night – and Adam doesn’t perform until 10:00pm I better not hear about school aged kids being there. Are you listening @Cindy! :)

I like Adam. He’s a lot of fun. I think people on both sides need to lighten up a bit. Some of the fans tend to go over board in their fandom but by the same token some of the detractors go over board in their venom. As Adam would say “it aint’ that deep”. If people obsess in their love or hate over anyone who was on American Idol than it’s time to put down the remote control and step outside and breathe some fresh air.

Well, I am a different generation, but I so love these three ladies in the video above. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to rock out, party and follow Adam around speaks for Adam and his infectuous ability to inspire people across ALL generations. The ladies interviewed have experienced great music decades ago and they are more than happy to relive those exciting times with another superstar of a newer generation who thrills audiences for so many reasons, which span from insane vocals to painted black toenails to sex appeal like Elvis. Btw, I see a lot of young people in the background which resembles my experience during my three Glamnation concerts that I attended. You certainly see a mixed crowd when you go to an Adam concert and I think it is absolutely fantastic!!!!!! In addition, I have met the kindest and most positive people during the concert.

Thanks for the positive review, however, I am a bit confused by “worst tendencies on Idol”? I am not sure what you are talking about. Adam may have pushed the button a few times (Ring of Fire?) which I loved, but he was always spot-on vocally and in terms of showmanship. He has always been able to pull off anything from rock wail to acoustic to pop. His voice is so versatile and well trained indeed.

you’re right. Adam can take it. But not all gay men and women can. Adam said he punched someone in the nose who called him a fag. But how does defending a gay person make them homophobic? Bullies are bullies. Whether or not someone can take it is irrelevant. If no one ever stood up for gay people, they wouldn’t be enjoying the much higher degree of safety and security as they are compared to say the 70’s. Taking on a bully doesn’t coddle the one they’ve targeted, it just makes them less likely to pick another target.

JTesla

September 15th, 2010
1:48 pm

My point isn’t that the rights of all should not be defended, because it should be. My point is that that there is a stage where the defense becomes coddling.

If you try to prevent all thoughts or words that a person might find offensive then you aren’t doing that person a service, instead you are treating them as if they were less of a person than you. You are acting as if they aren’t strong enough to defend themselves, and we aren’t talking about baby seals here, we are talking about human beings whose rights should be protected, but who should not be treated as if they were children. If you stop all offensive speech, then you stop all speech because offense can be found everywhere by one person or another.

I’m not trying to prevent them, I’m trying to counter them. There will always be ignorance and hate in the world, and I have a right to speak out against it. Again, how is defending a gay person homophobic? That was the original subject. Homophobic means fear of homosexuality, right? So my defending a gay person means that I actually fear him?

@Dierdre you need to get a life or grow up. I hope you are a teen because if you are an adult you are pathetic and annoying with your constant rants. And calling Adam fans annoying has got to be a joke. Rodney, maybe you can learn to write a review without being concerend about who is gay. Just review the darn music and the show. And for the Kris Allen fans who are always trying to send Adam to Vegas. Let me explain something to you, getting Adam out of the picture will not cause people to run out and buy a Kris Allen album. It will not make the press suddenly interested in Kris. It will not help him fill up a room when he headlines. In other words, getting rid of Adam will not make Kris a Star. The glam-rocker is here to entertain His fans and he is here to stay. Maybe if Kris fans were not so against women over 30 he would be more successful. Because most of the youngsters are going for Bieber, Kris it too old for them. And all homophobic slurs and putdowns of women will not change that. If you want to help Kris, intead of stalking Adam reviews, got out and buy a Kris Allen album. Go to his concerts and cheer him on. Offer him some support and love. Because trying to bring Adam down is not working for you so time to move on.

JTesla

Congrats on the fan AriesGal, it must mean that you are doing something right.

What I said: “I find interesting is how homophobic some of Adams fans are.” Some. Not all. And yes, I do believe that some Adam, and gay rights supporters in general, fear homosexuality. People often support the right thing due to ideology, but do not know enough to support the right thing based on logic and research. So, some would defend Adam by labeling any comment against him, that is perceived as bad, as being homophobic. The intelligent person would counter the negativity, not with labels, but with a logical counter argument. Labels are designed to silence discussion, and often to coddle. While an intelligent debate which may be lost on some, will eventually win the day.

I agree with JT. The need to defend Adam against any and all criticism is childish not to mention, repetitive. Adam is a strong man with a good head on his shoulders most of the time and loaded with talent. Id y’all know that…then WTF is the problem with someone else not liking him?

They have the right not to like Adam Lambert without being called homophobic.

Anyone else who posts diatribes obviously meant as bait should be ignored.

There are Adam fans here who took and very nice review and picked it apart to make it sound like Rodney is a homophobic idiot who is trying to put all Adam’s fans into an old folks’ home. Rodney observed and reported what he saw…what his impressions were.

His words are not gospel…they are impressions..and why…why???? would y’all care one way or the other whether or not one reviewer saw it the way you saw it?

Much ado about nothing – Adam’s concert was awesome and so are his fans – no matter the sex, age or orientation. Great talent is great talent and Adam has great talent. My daughter, granddaughter and I had the most marvelous time. Way back in Row U but enjoyed every minute and could see everything thanks to a slanted floor!!! We drove 5 hours to get to Atlanta and have only been home about an hour. “Soaked” is my favorite Adam song and that performance was about as perfect as possible!!! The fans’ silence was a bonus we hadn’t expected. I love all of Adam’s music however but was sorry not to hear “Whole Lotta Love” – whatever his encore was it was not my favorite. That, however, is the only negative I can find for the entire night. We were lucky to have a great hotel that was close and we got home in time to get my granddaughter to her college class with 1 minute to spare. Did some serious driving at some serious speeds. But all went wonderfully the entire trip! Hurray for more concerts with Adam that we can attend!

If his shows bore you though, you can always go to a Kris Allen concert, his headling shows never sell out so it should be very easy for you to get tickets. But then again, he doesn’t have anymore headling tours so he is trying to latch on to the popularity of still another act. oh well. Such is life.

We need to use this blog only to express our feelings about Adam and the concerts we have attended. I attended the Dallas and WinStar concerts and I am still on Cloud 9!! I truly believe Adam will be iconic (quoting Paula Abdul) and Adam will be a worldwide Superstar (quoting Simon Cowell). Adam does not need his fans wasting valuable time defending him, please spend your time spreading love and sharing your love for Adam Lambert.

You’re so musically impaired that you can’t even tell the difference between real talent and an autotuned voice. Shaddup and go sit “yurself” down in a corner somewhere. You can’t even use correct english let alone be a discerning music critic.

Wow that is beautiful Jennifer, maybe we can get together to discuss love and to express how love will overcome hate, and to do some spreading. Of love… yes spreading of love. ASL?

It took me a while on this thread, but now I’m officially a jerk.

Oh yes!! Mr Lambert will be a WorldWide very SMALL venue phenomenon. We will see to that as he is already into us for too much money and we atleast want to turn a profit. That young man will find himself working 2 shows a day for possibly 225 shows a year until he pays back his loan.

Travel, food, lighting, sound, roadies, groupies, drugs, hair spray, makeup, lipstick, light days oval pads etc…these thing all cost money and Mr Lambert is writing check his mouth cannot cash. We look forward to providing many many quality shows to you THE FAN.

Dierdre – Thanks! And, yes, the ballet one is “Black Swan”. Don’t care for Kiera K, but if it’s a good movie, heh – we were recently lamenting the fact the the plethera of Brit movies has slowed down to a trickle in the past year or two. When they’re good they are GREAT, but when they’re bad – nap time in the movie theater. The last one I saw with KK a couple years ago was a real snorer! Don’t remember name, but rich girl falls for butler’s son – a really not good movie. And she looked like she’d been in a coffin in the ground for a couple of year, and resurrected as a skeleton with no discernable flesh on her.

OK…this has been driving me crazy for years(a short trip, yes, thank you, I am aware of that):

Ruben Studdard! NOT Reuben Studdard. A Reuben is a sandwich!

And while I’m at it it’s Kelly Clarkson NOT Clarkston!

Sorry! Just had to get that off my chest.

You know what is kind of sad… if you were to take out the “imitator” posts, Fantasia, Bob Seger, now Kelly Clarkston and all the other personalities of this ONE person: this thread would probably only have about 62 posts. Not too many really for Adam. David Archuleta gets more than that.

I flew from the Tampa Bay area to Atlanta just to see Adam perform at the Symphoniy Hall. Adam is bigger
than life. This young beautiful man is so talented and so kind that if anyone speaks negatively about Adam,
they are simply jealous and evidently know nothing about music. When I spend money and go to a concert,
I want to be entertained otherwise I would just buy their cd. Adam knows how to excite his audience because
he is a great ENTERTAINER and his vocal abilities are the best I have heard in years. If you personally do
not like Adams style of music or his delivery, then don’t waste your time or mine posting negative comments.
Adam is all about Love and making his audience feel good. I am sure there are plenty of sites you could
post on to express your unhappy life and misery but not on any sites pertaining to ADAM LAMBERT.. Adam,
thank you for making my night in Atlanta spectacular. It is people such as yourself that make this world a happier place to be. BE SAFE.

Adam Lambert? What is an Adam Lambert? Well whatever it is it wont be around long after it received a Chuck Norris patented RoundHouse kick to the face.

I counted to infinity…TWICE.
I can slam revolving doors.

@Corp America you need to go back to bizness skool. Adam Lambert is not playing at Six Flags! He’s headlining his first tour with his first album and selling out mid-sized venues. Isn’t selling out a venue a good thing? And do you really think RCA would let him take his show overseas if he was losing them money?

JTesla

I’m not really complaining. I don’t find it funny, but to each their own. My point however is that Adam isn’t really creating the traffic that it appears he is creating. Or is he? I don’t have the numbers, maybe Adams fans are too old to realize that you can comment on these fancy new computer thing-a-ma-jigs. So, comment wise we aren’t seeing the numbers of Fantasia (there I said it again) or David or Clay.
