More than 60 percent of ad buyers think ‘Idol’ will drop from No. 1 in 2011 or 2012

simon_cowell

A majority of ad buyers, mostly citing Simon Cowell’s departure, expect ratings to drop for “Idol” to the point it will fall out of its perennial No. 1 spot among 18 to 49 year old viewers, according to a survey by MediaLife magazine.

Most ad buyers prefer three judges and won’t miss Ellen DeGeneres. Harry Connick Jr. is the top pick among the names the pollsters offered, ahead of Elton John and Justin Timberlake. They want more focus on the contestants, less filler and less verbiage from the judges. They also want fewer audition episodes (though those tend to bring in the biggest numbers). In other words, ad buyers are a lot like us!

- Justin Guarini, in 2002, was being considered for a role in Broadway’s “The Lion King.” He went to “Idol” instead. It’s taken him eight years to get a Broadway gig, this time in a musical version of “Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown,” a great film from 1988 I remember seeing in New York City. Congrats, Justin!

- Speaking of theaters, Jordin Sparks made her debut in “In the Heights”  last night. MJ posted pictures. Here she is performing on “Live With Regis & Kelly”:

The first Hollywood week show will peak the ratings as people tune in to see the newly-revamped panel of ‘taters.’ After that… barring some super talent being discovered… the ratings will tank.

Yay! to the ad buyers. Does anyone think Idol will listen?

When I look at the picture of Simon… I think “Why is this man smiling?”

Because next year… after a disastrous Idol Season 10… his new “X-Factor” is going to be one of the top shows in America & make him a even richer man.

What do they know? The producers of Idol know what is best for us!

It is funny how the ad buyers match us.

Good for Justin. I saw “The Lion King” a few months ago, he would have made a great Mufasa or older Simba.

Maybe it’s less a question of the ad buyers thinking like us, than the ad buyers reading the blogs and thinking the show should actually work to give us, the audience, more of what we really want.

What a novel idea?

Afternoon!
Or Evening, rather…
Two movies made in/around Atlanta open today – one good, one not.
The (very) good one is “Get Low”. Robert Duvall plays a gnarly old hermit with a sketchy past. Feels his time is up and orders himself a funeral – while he’s still alive. Understanding undertaker, Bill Murray, fixes a party for the backwoods ‘hood. Sissy Spacek, still nursing an old crush, shows up.

The (very) bad movie opening today is “Lottery Ticket”. Every cliché from every urban ghetto movie is here in a predictable “comedy” about a nice kid who wins the lottery and has to fend off a bunch of lowlives who think they have better use for the $370 million. Bow Wow, as the lottery winner, is an engaging young actor who deserves better material.

Finally, you don’t have to be a kid or bring one along to enjoy the fabulous Emma Thompson who returns as Nanny McPhee in… “Nanny McPhee Returns”. The British title, “Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang” was considerted too risqué. Maggy Gyllenhaal co-stars as a young mother beset by problems in WW II England. Other big names show up in movie – Maggie Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Ewan McGregor,Rhys Ifans.

It’s raining, so this is weekend for indoor chores… like cleaning up heaps of “important” papers. Found a People mag cover story from April 9, 2007 “The Finlists Tell All! Idol Secrets!”
This is the season few of us can remember (Jordin Sparks won) …Chris Sligh? Lakisha Jones? Phil Stacy? Chris Richardson? I don’t reckognize their faces and have no idea what they sounded like.

Haley Scarnato did have pretty legs, and they are amply displayed on the cover shot. This was the season of Melinda Doolitle (who should have won), Gina Glocksen (my favorite) and SANJAYA. Who did I forget? Blake Lewis, number 2,

This is how People rated the singers:
1, Blake – the Beat Boxer
2. Sanjaya – The Shocker
3. Chris Richardson – The Timberlake Look-a-like
4. Chris Slight – The Holy Rock’n'roller
5, Melinda Doolittle – The Mom Figure
6. Gina Glocksen – The Rocker Chick
7. Lakisha Jones – The Single Mom
8.Jordin Sparks – Teen Wonder
9. Phil Stacey – The Family Guy
10. Haley Scarnato – The Hottie

Who can beat THAT haunted story?
And…20 years on death row???

Rosita

Many people don’t realize it but it is actually cheaper to imprison someone for life w/o parole than to execute them, because of the automatic appeals process built into the capital criminal justice system. Death penalty appeals take a minimum of 10 years and 20 years is not at all unusual. Ask Woodpappy: Carlton Gary has resided on Georgia’s Death Row since 1986. . . .

Chris Sligh was a friend of this blog’s for a couple of seasons. He’d chat with Rodney and was really forthcoming about Idol behind the scenes.

I among others who will tune in just to be nosey and see what if any new changes in format will be in the next show. I will be as curious as a new born puppy taking its first look around his den.

Its kind of like..You know there will be a Huge change, You know the show wont be the same yet it will be very Compelling at least the first couple of shows. They will probably have a few guest celebrities sing for filler..couple of corny exchanges from Randy and Ryan. God awful contestants and a new clueless judge.

I think many of AIs audience will tune it just to talk about it what its not rather than what it has become or now is. Either way expect a rain of disdain, hisses and jeers and of course Critique. A bad night will Still Fill a Blog. Only problem is most will not be compliments.
