Could Nigel Lythgoe be returning to ‘Idol’?

Nigel-Lythgoe-740634-795620Since “So You Think You Can Dance” judge/creator Nigel Lythgoe left his executive producer role on “Idol” two years ago, the show has had serious problems staying on time and this past year seemed to rely too much on “whoever is hot today” artists to bolster the results show.

Now there is talk he may return as an executive producer, according to Hollywood Reporter. The Wrap says he will only be a CKX rep, whatever that means. I’m not sure what his powers will be if that’s the case.

Either way, this could be good news for the aging show. Lythgoe has always frowned upon the four-judge panel, which has slowed up the show and takes time away from the contestants.  He told a reporter in April he’d start over.

“I would replace the entire judging panel,” Lythgoe tells Zap2it. “I don’t think it really works replacing one person. They don’t have a great deal of chemistry at the moment. Ryan [Seacrest] and Simon have fallen out. It’s uncomfortable to watch. Ellen [DeGeneres] hasn’t worked out as well as we would have hoped.”

Randy Jackson has one more year on his contract. Ellen DeGeneres has multiple years. The story says Kara DioGuardi may not be under contract so “Idol” could dump her and go back to a three-person panel.

Elton John’s name is back in the till as a potential replacement. (Despite his Atlanta connections, for some reason, that does not excite me.) Another one: Justin Timberlake. He’s very funny on “Saturday Night Live” and has the musical experience, but I can’t tell if he’d be good as a judge. He threw out Usher, too, but I doubt he’d be interested. He’d also like Paula Abdul back but she’s committed to that CBS show “Got to Dance.”

I’m still rooting for Harry Connick Jr. I think most of the regulars here are on Team Harry.

-Oh, and that Ian Bernado who filed an anti-gay complaint against “Idol”? I misread the complaint. He is actually asking for $300 million, not $300,000. Yes, that certainly ups his credibility, eh?

Har-RY! Har-RY! Har-RY!

I think Justin Timberlake is too big for Idol. Not happy with Elton. Don’t know if Usher would be good.

I AM happy that Nigel may have some control over Ken Warwick and his steadfast determination to ruin the show.

Reading through some early comments on Idol Chatter (USA Today) and a lot of the posters are really for dumping all the judges (’taters) and starting over. Sadly, someone did suggest Lindsey Lohan as a replacement–yeah, that’ll work.
Anyway it will be interesting to see how this all pans out and if a streamlining of AI does happen.

While Harry, Elton, & Justin are in a word “intriguing” choices, they’re also active recording artists. There could be schedule conflicts galore. I do like the idea of Harry on the judging panel, though. I have a couple of other ideas in mind, but I doubt anyone would go for them. It would be nice to have direct access to the producers, if only to make a few suggestions for what to do with the show and know that they would eventually SEE these suggestions and supportive argument for them. But, it’s always been difficult to have this sort of access.

Ian Bernado is asking for $300 million, not $300,000 in damages. I glazed over the number because I don’t think my rational mind thought anybody would realistically ask for $300 million under the circumstances. I was wrong.

Don’t know what will happen with Nigel back on board but here’s what I hope will happen:

1. Revamp the judging. Go back to 3 judges, eliminating Kara, Randy and Ellen(although contract-wise I don’t think this is possible this year) Hire HCJr, Shania Twain and maybe Nigel himself as the new judges. Or a former Idol as a guest judge each week.

2. Go back to focusing on the contestants. More singing, please!

3. Revamp the voting. Keep phone and text voting. Add computer voting and MOST IMPORTANTLY limit the voting to 10 votes from each device.

4. Eliminate the big orchestra. Go back to piano and/or guitar accompaniment with NO backup singers.

5. Get Ryan Seacrest back…I don’t know who that guy was who hosted season 9.

6. Eliminate the mosh pit.

7. Return results night to it’s original format i.e. cheesy group sing, cheesy Ford commercial, maybe a song from a former Idol(not necessarily a winner) and the RESULTS! That’s ALL!

8. Take a survey about which themes are favorites. Use the top 5 every year then GET SOME NEW THEMES! And don’t use the bottom 5 themes more than once every 2 years.

Good list Deirdre. #2 is the most important. Why is #1 a problem, because it interferes with #2. Why is #4 a problem, because it interferes with #2.

I’m not for clearing the judging panel, just get rid of Randy. He really needs to go. The only time he offers anything is during the initial auditions, then it is just painful to watch him.

idolblogwatcher…the mosh pit is that pile of pretty young things who stand at the foot of the stage and raise their arms and sway to the music thereby distracting everyone, including the frickin camera guys, from focusing on the singer.

Sorry. the orchestra and the backup singers have GOT to go. They are part of the reason why Lee DeWyze made it to the finals. Huge efforts were made by both to keep him singing on key every time he went off key which was just about every song.

D- good list above. However, in #1 when you say former Idols as guest judges, are you limiting that to the actual Idols (of which there are just nine) or meaning the entire pool of former contestants in which case there are obviously many more choices? Inquiring minds want to know…

I (and kelly&carriefan) have championed this idea of rotating guest judges from former contestants which would include the likes of not just the Idols but some runner-ups and others like Pickler and Gokey, possibly.

sakura, I hear Carey Mulligan bowed out of playing Lisbeth. I do like Kristen Stewart (Twilight madness aside), and I’d be alright with her as Lisbeth, but I don’t know that she’d be the first choice. Although, if I could get the role of Miriam Wu…just kidding.

Carrie Mulligan is still on the rumored list for Lisbeth. Kristen Stewart certainly fits the visuals for Lisbeth but is she a good enough actress to carry it off?

I wondering if Dakota Fanning is old enough to pull it off. I haven’t heard her mentioned at all and she’s one of the best young actresses around. Maybe too young, now that I think of it.

I’m not too worried about how the actress looks…the magic of Hollywood will make her look like Lizbeth. It’s going to take a very good actress to make the character likeable despite her “idiosyncracies”.

Queen D., I agree with list except for #4.

I think the band actually helped anyone with good ears notice when Lee when off the reservation (which was constantly, I agree)!

Maybe an addition to the list would be to limit the number of times a contestant can perform with THEIR instrument. After all, it is a singing competition! (And we definitely had some people hiding behind guitars last season.)

Highlander

July 27th, 2010
2:53 pm

And I must take a tongue-in-cheek exception to something…

When Linny talks about the judges, she refers to them as ‘commentators’, which should make the short version “tator,” rather than “tater’ (which reminds me of Ron White, not our own Lady Linny)! :D

Deirdre

July 27th, 2010
2:56 pm

Highlander, what bothers me about the band the most is that it interferes with the vocals. It’s too loud most of the time and we have already talked about the sound being poor. Many times, when the judges give off-the-wall critiques….telling someone how good they were when they were awful…it has a lot to do with the band drowning out the singer.

kelly&carriefan

Rickster, LOL. Nice summary.

D, I hadn’t checked IMDB…who knows? Dakota Fanning would be an interesting choice, I believe she’s about 16?

Deirdre

July 27th, 2010
3:04 pm

Fanning has the acting chops to pull it off but at 16, I don’t think they could let her do some of the scenes. That’s probably why she hasn’t been mentioned.

I think, with Nigel’s help ore without it, Idol needs to make some significant changes this year if they want to keep going. And just replacing Simon isn’t going to be good enough.

Though I’m against an American remake (it’s perfect the way it is), I think Evan Rachel Wood would be great as Lisbeth – and she’s done some controversial roles (he-double-l, she lives with Marilyn Manson!). She’s been excellent in everything I’ve seen her in, from the TV show “Once and Again” to “Across the Universe”. Very intense young actress.

While an excellent actress, Dakota F is toooooooo young for that role, and I’d hope her parents would refuse even if she was interested.

So I guess what Deirdre is saying is that the band and background singers are kind of like FedEx, in other words they don’t deliver the package. Here you have a group that’s sole focus is to enhance the singer’s natural talent, and what they really do is detract. Kind of like FedEx, a company that specializes in delivering packages yet is totally incapable of actually delivering a package.

Am I agreeing with Deirdre, or venting about the horrid service provided by FedEx? Why would I vent, I only have to drive clear across town to pick up a package that they are incapable of delivering because they are the worst delivery service EVER. Oh and it’s easier to nix the band with Ricky Minor gone, especially after the cold treatment Idol gave him.

Haven’t read alll the comments yet, but have to throw my 2 cents in….Deirdre GREAT bullet list! I do disagree about the orchestra — small orchestra instead of big, perhaps b/u singers after the final 5 show … BUT… the SOUND MIX GUY needs to be replaced and has ever since they moved into the new digs. Put the band/orchestra back on the stage, where they belong. With b/u singers IF used back WITH the band/orchestra, not featured out by the contestant. To me, the biggest problem, however, IS the mixing of the sound. Perhaps IN the music hall the sound is great as mixed; however, for broadcast purposes, the mixing has the orchestra/backup singers way too loud and the contestant’s mic way too LOW. I don’t think they need a huge back up band/orchestra — the smaller “studio” size would be perfect IF mixed correctly. I truly think that the orchestra is up above the singer is a large part of the problem. I mean, what music hall/opera hall/musical theater has the orchestra located above and behind the performer? They’re either on stage, behind, or in a “pit” in front for a REASON guys.

And i like the idea of limiting how often the instrument can be used — I’d say no more than 1/3 of the shows should be allowed, AND i think that the contestants who use instruments should have to draw straws, so to speak, as to who gets to use their instrument each week, so that it’s not all clumped together one week, then no instruments the next. OR, again, NO instruments until the top 5 or 6, b/c by then the chaff should have been divided from the wheat!

I know, JT, that’s a very long paragraph and i once promised to break mine up so you’d read them, so i apologize, but i’m so exhausted from my vacation that i can’t think clearly enough to stop rambling!!!!

Sorry you didn’t enjoy “salt” asmuch as I did,D., I thought it was great fun. And I liked that she didn’t rely quite as much on explosions and car chases as the persecuted agent usually does in these type films. AND we have to disagree about Dakota Fanning too. She may be a brilliant 16-year old actress, but she’s way too immature for “The Girl” part. If I was her parent I wouldn’t even
want her to read those books yet.

Kristen Stewart is only a few years older than Fanning , but since I first saw her in “Panic Room” with Jodie Foster I have seen Stewart in ten movies NOT counting the “Twilight” ones, and she is a superbly talented actress.
