Event manager Diane Larche asked me at the last second to be a “celebrity taster” at the 21st annual Real Men Cook event Sunday, which provided funds for several charities including the Ruben Studdard Foundation. That meant a Ruben Studdard appearance, which made it an easy yes for me.
The event, held on Father’s Day, draws thousands to the Georgia Railroad Depot. Other participants include Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Sam Crenshaw of WXIA-TV, Jovita Moore and John Bachman of WSB-TV, Chef Jamika from “Next Food Network Star,” Jason Ellis from “Hell’s Kitchen” and Roger Bobb, supervising producer at Tyler Perry Studios.
I haven’t seen Ruben since the fall of 2008, before he started his vegan diet. He has since lost 100 pounds. He didn’t have time to actually cook, unfortunately, but arrived in time to sing a couple of songs (”I Surrender All,” “I Need An Angel”), sounding great as always, then set aside a couple of minutes to talk backstage. I also met his wife Surata Zuri McCants, who he met a few years ago at a Wal-Mart CD signing I also attended off Howell Mill Road.
I told him I was disappointed his tour with Clay Aiken didn’t hit Atlanta, but he said he hopes to have a second leg in the fall that does include the city.
I would have liked a bit more time with Ruben but this wasn’t an idyllic set up for that.
His charity foundation provides monies to support arts in education.
And here he is singing gloriously, “I Surrender All”:

Thanks Rodney. I love Ruben. He’s one of our more under-rated winners. I hope his tour with Clay reminds people of just how good he really is.
On a side note, now that Rodney and I have met face to face, I have to say(at the risk of annoying Mrs Rodney) I like you better without the hat.

The hat’s a gimmick. Gotta run with it!
Anyway, some medium-sized “Idol” news (lowering the age eligibility) which I felt I had to post but I wanted to keep Ruben at top so I back-timed it so it posted BEFORE Ruben although I wrote it after the fact. So go down to that blog if you want to comment about that news and take the poll. Also, Idol audition cities were announced, too. Only new city: Milwaukee.

First, let me say congrats to Ruben on the weight loss!
Ruben has always seemed very humble and apprecative of what he is and the talent that he has. Although I voted for Clay, I think Ruben has made an excellent idol winner. He reminds me of a big cuddly teddy bear. If he and Clay ever do make Atlanta a tour stop, I would do my best to get tickets.

You do have a great hat head, Rodney, but that particular hat has to go. It’s too bland, does absolutely nothing for you. Look for texture, at least, if not color.

Curiously, in a supposed anti-incumbent year, most of the departing are not retiring but seeking higher office. We may recycle more than we replace. The bad news is that a frustrating 114 seats still have but one contestant. Two of them aren’t even incumbents, meaning they will affect state policy without being vetted by voters. And I have to think that we’d be better off if many had run instead for the Legislature — and cut down on the number running unopposed. Georgia’s problems are numerous. They aren’t going away. There’s too much stale thinking at the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle. New voices would be welcome.

In weekend turmoil, forgot to post impressions of two movies opening last Friday!
Nobody in Hollywood can best Michael Douglas whenh it comes to playing total ESS-HAICH-I-T heads, and in “Solitary Man” he’s on top of his game! Great support from Susan Sarandon as his ex, and Mary-Louise Parker as his current sweet young thing. He’s taking his girl-friend’s daughter (newcomer Imogen Poots) to a college go-see and makes some really bad decisions.
“Jonah Hex” is better than you’d expect it to be, thanks to Josh Brolin in the title character. He’s more laid back than Clint ever was in his spaghetti westerns, and if he doesn’t have a cheap cigar stuck between his lips it’s because he can’t suck – an evil fellow ex-Confederate vet branded the “hero” , causing food and drink to fall out through a big hole in his cheek.
At 1 hour, 23 minutes, the movie is mercifully short, with only a 15 min appearance by Megan Fox.

Here’s the “lede”of the essay I’m writing about my garden:
The War Between (Wo)man and Nature
A garden, as Bette Davis once remarked about old age, is not for sissies.
Those sentimental fantasies of luxuriating in a field of flowers, picking grapes from an arbor while reclining gracefully on a Chesterfield bench – forget those. Earth mother emerging from a colorful patch of vegetables with a basket overflowing with its fruits? Not so fast, Martha!
Such images are mostly wishful thinking, if my experience is any measure. I was fully invested in them when I started my avocation as a gardener, but soon learned that wresting provender from the feisty earth is a pitched battle and, to borrow a phrase, “There will be blood.”

LOL! Rosita!
Gardening is easier in the northern climes. Things may not grow as well but the earth turns easier, the sun does not bake the garden or the gardener and the sweat doesn’t make the dirt and the bugs stick to you as much. However, even in the northern climes, Martha Stewart LIES when she walks through her garden looking fresh as a daisy. (or maybe it’s just that she has 20 to 30 people doing the work for her).
Maggie will get the sling off her back leg on Saturday. We will wait 5 days to see if the hip joint stays in it’s socket. If it does, surgery will happen on her front “wrist”. If it doesn’t, surgery will happen on her hip first, then once that has healed, the wrist will be fixed. Either way, Maggie has a long road ahead of her.
