Clay Aiken’s new album coming out; David Archuleta ‘memoir’ out, too; Diana DeGarmo is ‘Easy to Be Hard’

I hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day weekend. Especially the week after the “Idol” finale, I know only you true loyalists are hanging around today. I am back from New York and a four-hour flight delay that got me home at 3:40 a.m. I am feeling punchy!

clay-aiken-tried-true

Anyway, Clay Aiken (remember him?) is coming out with a new album. Sadly, it’s another cover album. The man seems allergic to singing new music.

And he called the album “Tried and True,” a signal that yes, he is treading old ground. Sadly, he and Ruben are NOT coming to Atlanta on the summer tour.

He was on “Good Morning America” today, where you can see the Claymates:

-David Archuleta’s book “Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song, and the Power of Perseverance” is out today. Yes, his publisher had the temerity to call it a memoir. We debated that term earlier but it does seem like the most pretentious book title ever, eh?

Here’s Diana DeGarmo singing “Easy to Be Hard” on the Early Show on CBS last Friday. She was born to be on Broadway.

Not only that, but the first day back at work after the Holiday weekend. I do have to say, that LA Times Power Ranking was, um, interesting. Though, I will not fault them for keeping Kelly on the top. ;)

Memoirs at 19? Um, yeah…about that. But hey, I’m sure some will read and love. Gosh. Good luck, Archie.

And as long as we’re posting videos….I NEVER saw THIS Lee on American Idol. Watch the video with him singing Beautiful Day. This could be why he won although I don’t recall him EVER singing this well on Idol.

Fantasia has turned into a helium-voiced singer, while Diana has grown into a wonderfully talented lady.

Remind me again why Fantasia won?

Rickster, Fantasia won because American Idol hates us.

Fantasia is basically the female Taylor Hicks. She’s a song stylist rather than what we might call a pure singer. she won based on her amazing performance of Summertime. She caught on with the audience in the same way that Taylor got our attention. By singing the song in a unique and interesting way. She won that season because she was different and likeable. Same reason that Taylor won.

I don’t like her either. I DO like Taylor but never thought of him as “commercial”.

It is interesting that you perceive Clay as being “allergic” to new material. Nothing could be further from the truth. Clay’s first album was all original material. He was recording original material for his second album until Clive Davis mandated that he record covers. Even that album was 1/4 original material. His last album before “Tried & True” was “On My Way Here”. Virtually all original material, produced by Kipper (of Sting fame) with musicians from the Steely Dan band. With the exception of his Christmas albums (which fall in an entirely different category), I would venture to guess that Clay has recorded more original material than standards. It is strange that many people seem to have the impression that he only records covers.

Deirdre

pixie…I think it’s because his latest work is standards rather than original and we tend to go by the adage “yeah but what has he done lately”. To be honest, I prefer Clay singing standards. He’s never going to be a pop icon so why not do what his supporters want to hear?

Al & Tipper remind me of a joke:

A REALLY elderly couple show up in front of a judge, seeking a divorce. He’s 102… she’s 100.

The judge looks at them and says, “You’ve been married 80 years. And you want a divorce? Why now? Why after such a long time.”

The wife looks up at the judge and says, “Well, it’s well known about all the problems that are experienced by children of a broken marriage.”

The judge says, “Yes. And?”

The wife continues, “We decided to wait till the children were dead.”

Rickster, if Siobhan hadn’t been a contender this year, I would have been good with “Crystal, you know, the girl who should have won Idol this year”…

Enjoyed the LA Times’ Idol ranking. Some people I couldn’t recall at all, some I remembered too well. Loved the reason for ranking Alex Wagner Trugman: “His parents put up ever ‘Idol’ has-been who comes through town, and for that alone, Season 8 Top 36 contender Alex Wagner-Trugman deserves a shout-out and a show of thanks here.”

In the ‘What’s your take on this?” department:

Top 40 stations around town are playing Pink’s ‘Glitter In The Air’, which is definitely NOT your typical Top 40 song – even for a ballad. (It has fairly intelligent lyrics, an actual melody and not a real ‘hook’ or repetitious tag line in sight!)

The point being, it is unlike anything you normally hear on the usual Top 40 playlists.

My question is, does anyone think this song would have seen the light of day on today’s radio if it weren’t for Pink’s remarkable performance of it on the Grammy’s?

I for one don’t think so. But it does give me a bit of hope for today’s music scene!

Kathy

Clay’s voice is just perfect for these songs. Covers? who cares. These are great songs and many artists have sang them. Didn’t the idol finalists this year just do covers instead of originals. Clays last album OMWH I think was his best so far. Until this one. My mom loves these songs and so do I. Lets just talk about the music. Its great!

Kathy, pointing out that they are covers is just talking about the music. Clay should try to sing something new, maybe that would buy him a bit more time before he becomes a Vegas lounge singer. Did I say Vegas? I meant Atlantic City.

so basically, what you guys are saying is Pink is ‘all growed up’ now and singing more maturely instead of feeling she has to sing poppish schlock? i agree, by the way. Which re-ranks her among the talented instead of the PC-Pop-Same-ol-same-ol category. However, i say this knowing that someone ELSE may try to do the same thing, since this is catching on, and may NOT have the talent to pull off a “real” song. If you catch my drift…

of course, once again, that leads to the discussion of “canned” releases which are magnificently enhanced, tweeked, and polished by the electronics industry and a good mix-man

linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

June 1st, 2010
6:40 pm

WHICH, by the way, AI needs to find before next season. The television mix-tech this past year, from practically day one, has NOT had his or her proper ears on… the studio audience MAY be getting wonderful mixes of the performances, whether contestant or mentor or guest, but many MANY times the television viewing audience has been subjected to sudden volume drops or pops, and way way WAY to heavy on the band and way way WAY to light on the contestant way more times than i can count. And it was happening last year, too…personally I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they’ve put the band in the mezz … the band should be back where it was, at the stage level, imho. And i’ve seen many many many performances from classical to rock to folk to opera to electric to acoustic to drama, and it’s always the same BS when the band is put “up” above the performers…. if they want to separate the band from the stage, put them in a “pit” like orchestras have, and get RID RID RID RID of the phoney baloney so-called “mosh” pit.

linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

of course, using an orchestra pit format would mean that someone actually realizes that orchestra pits in dramatic presentations (opera, broadway, etc) was done for a REASON… but hey…

I really do not care if Clay sings covers or originals. He has an amazing voice and I think he can sing anything. Natural talent cannot be denied. I really do believe he is the best vocalist to come out of American idol. I have never heard him sing a bad note. He is also well spoken and can articulate on really any topic with intelligence. When I heard him sing, ” Solitare”, and saw the reaction of Neil Sedaka it was an idol moment. He had the best male version of that song. Karen Carpenter owns the female version. That song is truly amazing and praise goes to Neil Sedaka for writing it.

David Archuletas book is a must read! He is so inpirational and a hard working young man! He just makes you want to be a better person. At any age we need people who inspire us! He had so many obsatcles and fears to overcome and still does.Mostly people who dont see the good in anything! David has kept a journal for many years. So cool to hear his thoughts and fears. No arrogance just a humble thankful young man who I for one am glad to be his fan. Before some critized him just pick up the book and then give your opinion. It is the most honest and real books I have ever read! You can tell David wrote every word! You can see into this young mans soul!! Love it!!!!!!!!!He will be around for a very long while!! Highlander, You KNOW I adore Pink’s song! She really hasn’t been your tradiitonal play-by-the-pop-rule-book singer from the start. Her lyrics have always been edgier than most of the Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swifties of the music world, and her attitude has always been one of love it or leave it. Personally, I love her.
