The ‘two percent’ issue

I misheard Ryan Seacrest last night. I thought he said there was a “two percent” separation between Lee and Crystal in votes from Tuesday. So I wrote it was 51% to 49%.

The truth, according to “Idol Chatter,” is that he said: “Coming into the vote last night, less than two percent separated the finalists.”

So he said nothing about the vote Tuesday night. He didn’t say how many votes were tallied, probably for the first time, which means it was far less than the 100 million from last year. And we have no clue how many votes separated Lee and Crystal.

Thanks for the clarification, Rodney.
Just another indication that this wild-card voting system skews the results too broadly. My favorites from the beginning were Lee and Siobhan, and Siobhan shouldn’t have been eliminated so early. She was kooky but still wonderful. I also think we might have lost Lilly, Didi and Katie too soon. (Lacey Brown, on the other hand, shoulda gone home earlier; she was cute, though, in a funky kind of way.)
It might be time to lobby for a new voting system before next season . .. . .
And, first?

I would be interested to see numbers for the whole season. On elimination nights, how much separates the top from the bottom?

And, to put things in perspective:

Little over 2% gave us Bush instead of Kerry in 2004
Gore had 0.5% over Bush in 2000
Little over 2% gave us Carter over Ford in 1976
Less than 1% gave us Nixon over Humphrey in 1968
0.1% gave us Kennedy over Nixon in 1960

Actually those numbers don’t mean anything, as you can see in 2000… that’s just the popular vote, but calculating percentages for the electoral vote is silly.

Both Lee and Crystal will be on Ellen’s show tomorrow (Friday)

I could’ve sworn I heard Ryan say “over 50 million votes” Didn’t tape it so I can’t verify. Probably imagined it.

Rodney, or anyone, (Bueller?), is there a way we can find out what the margin was? Ryan made it clear @ last year’s finale that Kris won by 40 million votes. If Lee did actually win by 50 million votes, that would be a shocker, even though he was my favorite. I think it would be another argument for tweaking the voting system.

Crystal and Lee have both signed on with 19 Recordings. Lee with RCA, Crystal with Jive.

Actually, Rodney, I believe Ryan said that Lee sang in tune less than 2% of the time.

I just figured out something that happened this season that I don’t believe ever happened before.

During the audition phase, we always see those poor, unfortunate (and sometimes humorous), tone-deaf people who swear their family and friends have always raved about how great they are. …Then they start ’singing’.

Well, this season the judging panel (‘tators, per Lady Linny) became Off-Key Lee’s surrogate family! …“Oh, honey, you sound just great. You are so, so good. Wait until Aunt Ethel hears you. You’re like the next Frank Sinatra, Jon Bon Jovi and Bono all rolled into one!”

And unfortunately, there were obviously quite a few others who bought into it!

Fantasia had ‘Summertime’.
Carrie had ‘Alone’.
David Cook had ‘Billie Jean’. (Chris Cornell’s version.)
Adam Lambert had ‘Mad World’.
Kris Allen had ‘Heartless’.

I can’t think of a single “Wow!” moment that Lee had this season! …Unless it was, “Wow! He made it through that whole performance in tune!” (And I’m not sure that ever happened!) :-)

Good Morning Everybody. T G I F!!!!!!!!

Today’s Quote: “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”

Well, I for one, hope that the powers that be (the producers) will curtail the voting to a minimum limit, whether you cast votes by text, phone or net.. They need to follow the examples of other reality shows such as DWTS or SYTYCD. I realize that there are more teens that text than older people, and that they can text at 90 miles per hour. My 14 year old granddaughter can text faster than a freight train, so in that essence, the text voting SHOULD be limited. Hopefully, this will be one of the changes coming next season. Correct the voting system!!!!!!

If I don’t get back here today, I will tell everyone to have a safe and happy Memorial Day. Remeber the ones who gave their lives for our freedom and who are still giving. Please don’t drink and drive.

We are leaving this afternoon for vacation and won’t be back until June 8, so keep the blog straight and running smooth.

I’ve already said that this morning but it didn’t post.

Rosita, what I thought I heard was that there were over 50 million total votes…not vote differential. But I could have been dreaming it.

Thanks, Nana. Hoping for safe travels for you and your family. Have some fun! You surely deserve it. Thanks, as always for your cautions, and we will see you back here on June 8. For everyone else, good morning!

It will be quiet around work today, with folks taking off work to get started on the weekend. Our students left over two weeks ago, so the campus is quiet, but we have to work on Monday. Doesn’t make sense. High schools are graduating all over the city today, and then all will be quiet with the morning traffic.

Mercedes, in spite of your less-than-stellar review, I plan to see SATC on Sunday. Two of my co-workers who are fans, have talked me into seeing it. In fact, they are the ones who prompted me to start watching the re-runs and really enjoying the show. I do not have HBO, so I did not watch during the heyday. Anyway, it will be a fun outing on Sunday afternon.

At what point during ths show did Ryan refer to numbers? I have it on my DVR and can look it up.

I had a “Wow Moment” during the finale. When Fantasia opened her mouth to sing during the results show I said, WOW does she suck, WOW I still can’t believe she ever won this thing, and WOW does America get it wrong sometimes.

My Idol winner rankings by personal preference:

1. Kelly – You never forget your first. Hit it big post-idol.
2. Cookie – Transformed Idol from karaoke to artistic interpretation.
3. Carrie – A chart-topping, post-idol superstar.
4. Reuben – The most lovable Idol winner ever.
5. Kris – Humble acoustic rocker just getting post-idol career started
6. Lee – Likable and neurotic, he’ll try and make it as an alternative pop-rocker.
7. Taylor – Hardest working Idol winner lives the road warrior life.
8. Jasmine – Pop/dance diva sells singles, not albums.
9. Fantasia – How this helium-voiced ho-bag ever won Idol is beyond me.

Harriett…I think it was toward the beginning. First 5 or 10 minutes. I can picture him in the audience or by the judges when he said it, not on the stage.

Neg…who is Jasmine?

oh! Jordin! I can never remember her either.

May 28th, 2010

D, I will take a peek when I get home tonight. Ok, here is my list:

6.Jordin (for reasons stated above)

May 28th, 2010

Neg you are missing Jordin Sparks….didn’t she win?

May 28th, 2010

So whose idea was it to have a bunch of losers come on stage with a live microphone???? That was stupy and really could have been a wardrobe or language malfunction.

May 28th, 2010
8:57 am

Since we’re ranking…

1. Carrie “Boots” Underwood: Enough said. ;-)
2. Kelly
3. Cookie
4. Kris
5. Ruben
6. Jordin
7. Lee
8. Taylor
9. Fantasia

Hope everyone has a great weekend (and hope its three days for everyone as well.)

May 28th, 2010
9:04 am

While we ar ranking, I thought I would rank my favorites that did NOT win by season:

3.George Huff
4.Don’t have one–Carrie was IT!
9.Mike Lynche

You really can’t just include the winners in this list. What about Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken, Daughtry, Katherine Mcphee. Wow moments for each of them Circle of Life, BOTW, Hemmorage, Somewhere over the Rainbow. Also Diana Degarmo’s Don’t Cry Outloud. David Archuleta Stand by me. Idol has plenty of talented non-winners to be proud of. I think they are all winners and success is not just limited to who holds the crown.

May 28th, 2010

#1 Kelly (by a huge margin)
#2 David Cook
#3-5 Pretty much a meh! tie between Carrie,Kris & Taylor
#6 Lee
#7 Jordan (but cannot stand her anti women’s rights stance)
#8 Rubin (should bee Clay all the way!)
#9 Fan-freakin-tasia (nails of chalkboard, subway train brakes, beestung tongue list)

Someone above (mind’s not working too sharply today) listed “moments”, but totally left Kelly out. I think every performance she had was a standout, but let’s give the girl huge props for “Some Stuff LIke That There”!

May 28th, 2010

make that “be Clay” and “beestung tongue lisp” – Sooooo ready for this holiday!

May 28th, 2010
9:51 am

I’ll take a stab at these rankings
1. Kelly – rags to riches superstar and deserves every bit of it.
2. Cook- Really has it all, if his health lasts.
3. Jordin- Did I miss something with her? She has a fantastic voice and some of the best performances ever on Idol.
4. Carrie- I’m not that big of fan actually, but her success pushes her up my list. She’s no Reba, Trisha, Faith, or Twain.
5. Kris- There is room for him to grow on this list, still too early to make a solid ranking for him.
6. Taylor- You may not like his style, but the guy can sing.
7. Reuban- You may not like his style, but the guy can sing.
8. Fantasia- You may not like her style or voice, but the girl can sing.
9. Lee- Worst “singer” to ever win Idol. I can sing better than this scam.

May 28th, 2010
10:13 am

In the MOMENTS category: My top moment was the moment Bo started singing an acapella version of Badland’s “In A Dream”. This feat is a one of a kind – not attempted before or after by any contestant, much less pulled off spectacularly!!!!!

TGIF, y’all,

I wanna play this fun game, so here are mine:

1. Kelly – Is this even a question for me? Nope. Like Neg said, you never forget your first.
2. Carrie – No doubt.
3. Cook – A complete musician, imo.
4. Jordin – Great voice.
5. Kris – I enjoy him more now than I used to, and find myself rooting for him.
6. Ruben – R&B is not my thing, and I wanted Clay to win. Still, he’s dang good.
7. Taylor – I was borderline Soul Patrol. His charisma performing was what impressed me at the time. He was completely at home onstage.
8. Lee – Seems like a sweet guy, and I’m totally Team Mama Sox in that finale, but I am going to give his old stuff a listen. Maybe he stays in key when he’s not nervous?
9. Fantasia – I was never really a fan of hers, but she did have some pretty amazing performances.

Highlander, LOL @ my “checking out” comment! Stuff like that never crosses my mind. Thanks for the laugh, bud.

Kathy, nice list, but “You really can’t just include the winners in this list”, actually I’m going to do just that:

1. Carrie, her season got me hooked and she was a large part of that. I’m not a fan of country, but I was/am a fan of hers.

2. Kelly, I barely watched her season and she still stands out for me.

3. Taylor, I was more a fan of Daughtry, but Taylor provided non-stop entertainment during his run. Post Idol… Taylor who?

4. Cook, Mr. Make it your own. He was the best at presenting off beat arrangements.

5. Ruben, I didn’t watch a lot during his season, but he had a great voice and I still enjoy seeing him return to Idol.

6. Jordin, I didn’t care for her all that much. Nice girl, but she doesn’t do anything for me.

7. Kris, see my comments regarding Jordin.

8. Lee, how was it that he won again?

9. Fantasia meh.

What’s odd is that the name is showing JTe$la in my last post, but the name I have does not have the $… why do you taunt me blog. Or maybe it is my cookies. I like cookies.

I seem to always think the number two spot is better than the number one spot in these talent shows. For example, these people came in second – Crystal, Adam Lambert, David Archeleta, and the greatest number 2 spot ever from Britain’s X Factor-Susan Boyle.

May 28th, 2010
11:42 am

I seriously think Lee and Crystal are more than friends.

May 28th, 2010
11:44 am

Both Lee and Crystal have already inked their deals:

May 28th, 2010
11:55 am

Why do you think that, Neg?

I agree that the #2 spot in often better than the #1 spot.

Season 1….Definitely Kelly was better than Justin. Her only serious competition ended in the #4 spot. Tamyra Grey

Season 2….Ruben and Clay were just about tied for me. Loved both of them. And #3 that year, Kimberly Locke, could have won this season singing at half her ability.

Season 3…..Fantasia, JHud, Diana…it was truly a girl’s year.

Season 4….Carrie and Bo were both amazing. I would have been happy with a win from either one of them.

Season 5…..imo the best season Idol has ever had for sheer numbers of possible winners. Taylor had the season sewn up because he was so unique but Chris Daughtry, Elliot Yamin, Paris Bennett, Katharine McPhee and Kellie Pickler were all at a possible winner level

Season 6….Jordin was fine…lovely voice, terrific girl. But 3rd place finisher Melinda Doolittle stills stand out for me as one of the best that Idol has ever seen.

Season 7. David Cook deserved that win hands down bar none! Archie was cute and sweet and a very good singer. imo Michael Johns was robbed that year.

Season 8….I’ll give Kris Allen all the props he deserves for rising from virtual obscurity to take the crown. Good singer, even better musician. Adam set Idol on it’s ear and I think they’re still trying to recover.

Season 9….Crystal was really the best they had.

Not sure how I feel about this. Bret Michaels wants to replace Simon. Wouldn’t we be worried about him dropping dead during one of the live shows?

May 28th, 2010
12:33 pm

He might be ok, but I have serious problems with the “ewwww” factor, after his Rock of Love and his “tour bus thrusts,” which he demonstrated on the Celebrity Apprentice. He’s just not someone I think is in Simon’s league. But, nobody asked me. If I could forget all of that, perhaps…

A good indication of popularity is the Yahoo Buzz Search Index. Crystal Bowersox is number two, while Lee DeWize hasn’t crack their Top 20.

May 28th, 2010

I still think if they’re going to stick with four judges, get Katy Perry.

If they decide to go back to the three-judge format, get Katy Perry, dump Ellen.

May 28th, 2010
1:09 pm

Rickster, I’m ok with change, but we got to get rid of Randy too. Yes, I’m a broken record. He’s fine during the auditions, but after that he is a waste of TV time.

May 28th, 2010
1:14 pm

Just me, but I think dumping Randy might have a residual effect like Paula’s leaving did. The “big three” were present at the creation, and getting rid of all three does not sit well with me. As I said, just my opinion.

May 28th, 2010
1:29 pm

New thread up!

May 28th, 2010
2:11 pm

I’d agree with you on most of your last comment, JT. But I think Randy becomes a waste after Hollywood week.

But I agree with you Harriett, losing all three original judges in a little more than one season would be too much of a shock to most Idol viewers.

Let them 1) get rid of Ellen (though now that she’s started her own record label, she’s got ‘cred’) 2) in a (qualified) newbie, 3) let folks get used to those changes and 4) dump Randy after Season 10 (if they don’t dump everyone by closing down Idol completely.)

May 28th, 2010
4:30 pm

Ok I will try and stick with the winners. Here it goes:
Season 1: Kelly all the way. But I liked Tamara Gray; Christini Ricci
Season 2: I like Ruben but for me CLay was the voice. Kimberly Locke also a favorite
Season 3: I think Laytoya London, Jennifer Hudson, Diana Degarmo could have won. All great singers. Fantasia is inspiring and unique however I think there were other strong singers that year.
Season 4: Carrie sang Alone and I knew she would win. Bo was good also
Season 5: I thought Kat would win with Somewhere over the rainbow. Excellent performance. Surprised about Daughtry. Taylor was very likeable and down to earth and handled himself professionally. He was entertaining.
Season 6:Blake was different and I thought he had a chance until the coronation song. Better suited for Jordin. She can sing.
Season 7: Cook was good. Young David talented but not as well spoken as Cook. I enjoyed both Davids that year. Michael Johns also good
Season 8: I thought Adam would win when he stood still for Tracks of My Tears and Mad World. Two of my favorite performances of his. Kris Allen is very likeable and sings well. Surprise but not shocked this year. Wish them both well
Season 9: The voting system maybe to blame but Lee is very likeable like Cook and Allen. Crystal will do well as number 2. She is in great company with Clay, David, Adam and the others.

May 28th, 2010
5:42 pm

In the future, anytime we hear Lee sing ‘live’ we’ll be wondering just when he’s going to go off key. And it WILL be a question of when, not if!

Someone else (might have been Alex T) nailed it on an earlier thread, …we now have a male Taylor Swift!

And judging by all the ‘favorites’ lists here, I’m not alone in that assessment.
