‘American Idol’ top 2 performance show recap, polls

Who's going to win?

The season nine finale dispensed with the fluff. With only six songs to fit in one hour, the producers let the final two sing longer versions, and the judges didn’t talk as long. A recap video with Will Young singing filled the final couple of minutes.

More notably, this was the final night for Simon Cowell to critique anything.

Crystal Bowersox forced Simon to end the night saying something nice after her powerful “Up To the Mountain.” While the momentum was shifting to Lee DeWyze as the finale neared, Crystal put up a strong fight. She even thanked Simon before his last critique, which may have been calculated for votes but probably heartfelt.

I am rooting for Crystal, who I have always liked more from the start. However, Dial Idol, currently, has Lee far far ahead of Crystal and since that is only based on calls, I doubt she’ll be able to close the gap with texts.

Bottom line: Like Kris Allen last year, Lee is more mainstream, more broadly appealing. Expect him to take home the crown tomorrow night.

My rankings of the songs, though I don’t think anybody did a cruddy job. 1. Crystal’s “Up To the Mountain” 2. Crystal’s “Me and Bobby McGhee” 3. Lee’s “The Boxer” 4. Crystal’s “Black Velvet” 5. Lee’s “Beautiful Day” 6. Lee’s “Everybody Hurts”

“I’m beside myself,” Crystal said. “I’m entirely grateful for my family and my life and my son. I’m ready for anything.”

“I will be doing this for the rest of my life,” Lee said, regardless of what happens from here on in.

Favorite song they’ve sung before

First up: Lee (”The Boxer” Simon & Garfunkel) – He does a very pretty version of this song but it doesn’t have any real peak emotional points.
Randy: “Pick it up. Get more energy going.”
Ellen: “I couldn’t be prouder if I birthed you myself. I think you did it better than the first time.
Kara: “You got to punch harder. A meaningful song. I’m glad you were connected to it.”
Simon: “I would expect a lot more passion, excitement. That was a kiss on the cheek when I want a kiss on the lips.”

Your favorite performance tonight?

Second up: Crystal (”Me and Bobby McGee” Janis Joplin) – The whole Janis Joplin comparison doesn’t necessarily mean she has to sing this song again. But here she is. It’s a solid cover version, with a strong ending, but I can’t say she transcends the original.
Randy: “It started a little slow but you picked it up. At the end, it’s the Crystal we’ve grown to know and love.”
Ellen: “You just are so compelling on stage. You and that guitar filling up the entire room. Stunning.”
Kara: “You have fire in your belly tonight.”
Simon: “This brought us back to the time when we absolutely fell in love with you. The past three or four weeks have not been great. We have a competition tonight. That was terrific.”

Round 1: Crystal

Simon Fuller’s pick

Third up: Lee (”Everybody Hurts” R.E.M.) – It worked at moments but I’m not sure he connected all the time with the crowd. And he definitely through a few wonky notes in there.
Randy: “It was a lot better”
Ellen: “I felt you went off a couple of times but I didn’t care. A couple of times you really got into it. then you pulled back again.”
Kara: “You’re emotionally accessible.”
Simon: “Brilliant choice of song for you. I think what I”m feeling tonight is you’re nervous. You have another song to come. You have to really understand what this night can do to change your life.”

Fourth up: Crystal (”Black Velvet” Alannah Myles) – I preferred the original. She sings it with an odd buoyancy and her final “big” note is a bit rough.
Randy: Mama Sox is in it to win it. That was hot!
Ellen: Wardrobes are like Cher changes. That was fantastic.
Kara: Tonight is the night to give it your all. That’s what you were doing.
Simon: I’m almost allergic to that song I’ve heard it so many times in auditions where they’ve murdered it. You took that song and you absolutely nailed it.

Round #2: a draw

Song they sing if they win

Fifth up: Lee (”Beautiful Day” U2) – He doesn’t try to over sing it to match Bono’s powerful pipes during the chorus. Smart move. But he lacks the capability to bring the majesty of Bono’s performance. It’s merely good. I still wish he would show a bit more life on stage. But at least he is trying to hold a note or two.
Randy: When you hit the high notes, you started getting the groove.
Ellen: I was watching your eyes and you were fully present in the song, taking in these people’s energy.
Kara: You got swallowed up in that song. You had good moments and not so good moments. You’ve grown the most.
Simon: You made the most of it. This is the final time I’m going to judge this show. This is what the show is designed for. Someone who needs a break… you’ve worked hard, you’ve remained a really really nice person throughout and I genuinely wish the best for you.

Pimp spot: Crystal (”Up to the Mountain” Patti Griffin) – She starts on a stool and sounds amazing. She brings her entire soul into the song and pulls it off. Is it commercial? No way we’d here that with Ke$ha. But that’s just fine.
Randy: An amazing song by an amazing singer. I’m so proud of you. One of your best moments at the perfect time.
Ellen: You’re always looking for someone unique. I can’t compare you to any current artists. You’re in a league on your own.
Kara: This was a very important song for you. If I have one criticism, I haven’t seen what’s going on inside of you. All I can see is you. You really blossomed just with that song.
Simon (his final critique ever!) – Crystal thanks him. Very classy! I thought that was by far the best performance and song of the night. This will be the final critique I’m ever going to give. That was outstanding.

Well, tonight was about as close to a blow out as I have seen in an Idol finale. While off-key Lee may still pull out the win, tonight was a clean knock out by crystal in my book.

1. Crystal – Up to the Mountain – This was as close to a WOW moment for me as any performance this season. I actually had to wipe a couple tears away as this song ended. Crystal sang this with an emotion we have not seen from her all season. Win or lose she capped the season with her best performance. Simply amazing.

2. Crystal – Black Velvet – A perfect torchy choice by the producers. Crystal absolutely slayed this song. I was scared for her in those heels going down the stairs, but other than that she blew this “out da box”.

3. Crystal – Me and Bobby McGee – Loved this the first time she did it, and loved it again this time. Crystal came with her A game tonight and showed no matter what the actual outcome is, she was here to win.

4. Lee – Beautiful Day – a couple pitch problems, but overall a very good performance by Lee. Did not feel it was as good as any of Crystal’s performances, but it was very good and showed Lee’s talent and that he definately deserved his spot in the finals.

5. Lee – The Boxer – Not sure this was as good as the first time he sang it. His nerves were on full display, and he had some really rough spots in this song. Still it was a good solid performance, but not great.

6. Lee – Everybody Hurts – On the good side, it was not a total trainwreck performance, but it was painful. Lee hit some very sour notes and just seemed to be slightly behind the beat the entire song to me. I think Lee’s nerves really got to him tonight.

SHOULD WIN – Crystal. She owned the stage tonight and was clearly the best performer.

WILL WIN – 50/50 – Lee has such a deep fan base that I am not sure even the clear blow out tonight will matter.

I’m just so crestfallen that Crystal’s so far behind in the voting already. HOW? I’ve never seen a final song performed with the goose-bump level that Crystal brought. I’ll keep voting as long as I can. I haven’t been feeling well today, and I think my voting will end as soon as DWTS ends tonight.

D. Don’t discount the hordes of tone deaf Idol viewers and the relentless pimping of Lee for 11 of the `12 weeks. After the AI tour, let’s see how many fans show up for the Tin Ear Alley Tour (ie, Vaudeville for the tone deaf for those of you under 55)

here is a little Dial Idol perspective.. Won;t say stop hyperventilating everyone, but I think it is vary telling.

First – here is why dial Idol shows Lee so far ahead —
his Busy Percentages are 16.56% 14.11% 13.54%
Crystal’s busy percentages 9.7% 8.25% 7.85%

So, Lee has double the busy signals for dial idol callers — seems like a clear victory.

However, let’s lool at the raw numbers:

Crystal 39628 Votes with 3411 being busy signals
Lee 28538 Votes with 4155 being busy signals

So while Lee has a bigger busy signal %, Crystal has a 57.3% to 42.7% voting edge.

Thanks for that perspective, Mike. I’m motivated to keep voting for our girl, then!

Wow, Lee was like a high school musical kid that can kinda sing okay until he goes up against someone that can really sing. He was blown off the stage tonight and you could see in the judges faces. They were trying to eek out a competition for the final show tomorrow night but it’s over. Lee will not have a singing career, never…no way.

I am truly outnumbered, but I do not like Crystal. Maybe it was nerves, or something she took to calm them, but she was really off in everything BUT her singing tonight. She is about 35-40 years too late with her style. Gotta run and vote for Lee now.

I get so fraking tired of people Dissin’ on Crystal BECAUSE she doesn’t sound like anyone in contemporary music. That’s because 99.9% of those girls singing pop right now are voice-over/vocoder/studio created vocalists, IF that, and have all the personality and glow of a flashlight whose batteries are dying. Crystal brings up memories and joys of truly great female vocalists … so WHAT if they were years in the past???? There really are NOT many really GOOD female singers — i mean creative, vocally talented, confident, SINGERS. And most of those that are considered “pop” are just sucky, relying on gimmicks, technology, sex, and makeup (way too much) to make them stand out. Crystal can stand there and not move, and STILL outsing most of the singers of today. Is she fantabulous the best ever singer? NO, she’s not. But she’s dayum good …

and that’s my opinion and i’m stickin’ to it.

You know, I am not a regular on here but I enjoy yall’s comments. On one hand, it was no contest at all. To say there was any comparison at all would be an insult. Each of the people were good for the respective fans, but Crystal’s last song was a religious experience. The only ones from the past I can think of even coming close were Fantasia;s “Summertime” or Bo Bice doing “Whipping Post” accapello. So I am torn. If Krustal wins, she has one limp album before her career takes off. If she is robbed and comes in second, her career takes off immediately. If Lee wins, his debut will be his swan song. If he loses, he gets a crappy album cover like the obviously unforgettable number two from two years ago (much like the obviously unforgettable number one from two years ago). Both of the final two are deserving, both have good back stories, but all I can think of when I see Lee is John Travolta’s character in Saturday Night Fever. Crystal is unique. She’s no Patsy Cline, but who is… Best of luck to both but I am almost pulling for Crystal to come in second just to avoid the dreck.

When you have singers like Grace Slick, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, even Janis Joplin, short a time as she was here, Phoebe Snow, the backup! singer on Pink Floyd’s shows/albums–sorry i can’t remember her name, Stevie Nicks, … Anne Wilson, …early Aretha, Diana, …on and on i could go …. then compare THOSE vocalists, singers, artists, with the likes of Britney, GaGa, Winehouse …. yeah there are SOME good current singers, but as a class of performers, …. sorry, i just do not get it.

Linny…everyone of the singers you mention, I LOVE! I really think Crystal would have benefited by doing some Stevie Nicks (did she…I don’t remember) or Heart, but not “Alone”. That song has been overkilled on AI. Heart has PLENTY of songs in their repertoire that I would have loved hearing from Crystal. She actually might have performed “Barracuda” real well. Patty, Lee has a good back story. I think Crystal has had a rougher life and that’s why she pours herself into her music. I think she has shown more guts than most with her diabetes, single mom, etc. The fact that she didn’t buckle to the pressure of the judges and compromise her music was great and the only reason she auditioned for AI was for her son. Can’t ask for a better reason than that from Mamasox.

I like Lee. He’s a good guy and family supports him. Just not on the same level singing as Crystal. He will appeal to pop rock (not hard rockers) and tweens. His appeal and voice will benefit from the studio work like Taylor Swift who also has “pitch” problems. Crystal just has a voice that doesn’t need studio correction.

Just my opinion, but we seem to have gotten some “single mom” backlash on the blog tonight. If so, then that is just a shame.

Raw number votes on Dial Idol show 59% for Crystal and 41% for Lee.

Had to work late tonight so just got through my DVR review. Wasn’t even close as I expected. A natural singer vs a guy who seems nice enough but can’t carry a tune in a bucket. No contest in singing ability but remains to be seen as to who will have the vote getting ability. I know you guys diss the tweener, cougar, etc. voting, but I can’t help but think the majority of the voters are female. Hopefully enough will be swayed by talent over physical attractiveness.

I thought the judges were really pushing for Crystal for some reason. she was good but not that much better than Lee, if at all.

Voted my socks off for Mamasox tonight. I’m so disappointed that DI has her so far behind Off Key Lee on a night when the cream of this year’s crop – Crystal – rose once again to the top. There was no comparison. Even the judges had to admit it. But hey – one night can’t combat weeks of unabashed Lee-pimping, even on nights when he was off key for at least half the song.

She blew the roof off the house and it’s still not enough. Perhaps that’s why I find this season especially disappointing: the egregious judge interference robbed the better singer and more mature artist of a win she deserved. And the busy signal seems to indicate that the voting public with the speediest dialing/texting fingers bought into it completely.

Quote of the night from Kara to Lee:

“Was it a perfect vocal? NO. But that’s what I like about you!”

Wish there was this much passion for real elections.

This finale was more of a blow out than Jordin vs. Blake. It wasn’t even a competition. Yes, Lee will do fine, heck he can probably sell more than Crystal, but I’m voting based on the competition and Crystal BLEW Lee out of the water. It was as if he wasn’t even trying, or trying too much, that can happen sometimes.

I still won’t be disappointed whatever the result, but tonight, finally, Idol recaptured the magic. It was because the focus was on the music, and at least 75% of the music was good.

Just finished recordings of “Idol” and”Glee” (”Glee”!!!!).
Frankly, it’s unbelievable that Lee got as far as he did. All he needed were two bolts in his neck, and voila, there we’d have Boris Karloff as the Monster… Lee seemed scared out of his wits in front of all those people and it affected his off-key problems horribly. His stiff movements never went beyond that robotic stomping of his right foot, not unlike a frightened pony.

Crystal’s last song was the Moment of the evening. Perhaps even the moment of the last month.
She is clearly a wonderful singer, and I hope a career worthy of her talent awaits her.

Neg, re your “Never in idol history has anyone lost being THIS MUCH BETTER than the person who won on the final night. Ever!”… guess you didn’t watch the Kris/Adam sing-off??

Well as I said on the earlier blog, this middle aged female, who was somewhat bored with Crystal by the end of the season – texted her fingers off for her.

Lee may be easy on the eyes, but Crystal just smoked tonight. I came in totally ambivalent and ended totally blown away and proud of her for bringing it when it mattered most. Not that she wasn’t good all season, but she almost phoned it in towards the end. She earned it tonight and I’m glad I have someone to solidly root for now.

I still think though, that this finale could have been so much more interesting (and balanced) if Siobhan had made it here. But I know I’m in the minority on that!

Mercedes, if Crystal loses I’ll make the unhinged Glambert fans appear mild mannered and rational by comparison.

OK, East Cost voting is over. Lee is up by 4.5 points (how?????) in Dial Idol, but Crystal does have a 60-40% raw vote advantage, so you never know….

If Crystal doesn’t win, it will go down as one of AI’s biggest upsets

I voted for at least an hour and a half, no idea how many votes, but it had to be a lot.

And I have to wonder, had america not voted stupid during top 24, where would Lilly, Katelyn, and Alex be at this point?

Whelp, voting here is over. Lines are busy. Too bad because I’m so awestruck by Crystal’s amazing abilities I’d literally stay up all night dialing and texting just to get one more vote in for her.

She’s just that good, that soulful, that ready–she’s the real deal and I just hope more people out there saw what I saw tonight–a special lady in dreadlocks who finished the night and silenced 7,000 strong in Nokia theater.

Whatever happens she won in my book. Yep, and I will buy anything she puts out there.

While Dialidol is probably right and Lee pulled the win I think he will most likely go the way of some previous winners who were completely forgettable a few months after the show ended. Crystal on the other hand, should be the more successful. Personally, I will only buy her CD.

Good morning, all. My “feeling bad”-ness last night cost me this morning. So after staying up as late as I could go to vote for Crystal instead of going to bed early, I now must take a sick day from work.

You know: We pro-Crystal voters did our best. She could still shock us all and come out on top, and that would be absolutely wonderful. I will agree with B. I’m not going to say I’ll forget Lee, but I’m not really going to remember to remember him (if that makes any sense) unless his name is brought up down the road.

Crystal might actually benefit from not winning. I think being a finalist was the door she needed opened for her to get the recording contract she needed. We’ll see how they each do.
