Tim Urban ’sad’ by Vote for the Worst placing; season low ratings for ‘Idol’

tim urban singingTim Urban, who finished seventh, was “sad” by being on Vote for the Worst, where he held fort for a record nine weeks. In other words, he didn’t take it humorously as some past contestants who have been named. Yes, I was second up on today’s press conference and asked him about it:

I really have no comment about that website. I’m not excited I was on the website. It’s not really anything that I should be proud of. I really didn’t like being on there and was basically working my hardest to get off of it. I’m actually sad I was on that website.

His smile in face of criticism: “It was me having fun on stage and not let them really affect me that much.”

On his slide during “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”: “I was goofing off in rehearsals. Hey, I’m going to slide. I did it. The stage manager and the producers said you should do that in the performance. I thought it’d be great and a lot of fun. Absolutely. It was a last-minute joke that turned out to be something I wanted to do …

Shania Twain mentoring next week; Lady Antebellum & Rascal Flatts performing next week; Cigarette company drops Clarkson concert sponsorship

shania idol

Shania Twain, who had fun as a guest judge last summer, is back as a guest mentor next week.

The final six will have to sing Shania’s tunes, too. Will Aaron sing, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman”?

Twain has been living in Europe for years and has only released four albums, her last in 2002. Her 1997 release “Come On Over” is still the biggest-selling female solo country album in history and was a huge cross-over hit.

The only act in the top 6 now who has a country feel is Casey James.

Lady Antebellum (”Need You Now”) and Rascal Flatts (”Unstoppable”) will perform next Wednesday.

Her discography of singles:
“What Made You Say That”
“Dance with the One That Brought You”
“You Lay a Whole Lot of Love on Me”
“Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?”
“Any Man of Mine”
“The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You)”
“(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!”
“You Win My Love”
“No One Needs to Know”
“Home Ain’t Where His Heart Is (Anymore)”
“God Bless the Child”
“Love Gets Me Every …

Who got cut from ‘Idol’ this week?

Tim Urban leaving

  • It’s long overdue
  • He deserved more time

I thought they wouldn’t cut anybody on “Idol Gives Back” night but they did anyway and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy: Tim Urban.

“Teflon Tim,” as Ryan Seacrest dubbed him, wasn’t even supposed to be in the top 24 but another contestant was under contract and broke the rules. Tim was never considered a favorite. He had that goofy Brady hair and goofy grin, not much stage presence and an okay voice.

Tim-Urban

He did improve and had a few decent moments but was Vote for the Worst’s most successful contestant yet. I suspect they even kept him alive for awhile but he certainly had his (youngish) fans.

I did properly predict his departure after he failed to ignite “Better Days” and got two out of the bottom three right. (I thought Michael would be in the bottom three but Aaron was there instead.). Casey was on the bottom three for the first time but survived.

Given the show went …

‘American Idol’s’ ‘Idol Gives Back’ live blogging

There will be much solemnity and perhaps some weird CGI trick (remember Celine Dion “dueting” with Elvis three years ago?) tonight. Sure, we should be charitable – to the charities. As for the performances? We can be as mean as we want to be!

Kelly Clarkson’s Indonesian smoking billboard; Danny Gokey at Wild Bill’s Friday

Billboard and TV advertising for tobacco have been banned for years in the United States. So it’s a little jarring for us when we see billboards of Kelly Clarkson concerts in Indonesia sponsored by a tobacco company — in Indonesia, where such advertising is unfettered.

AP ran a story about how some anti-smoking advocates here in the U.S. are trying to stick their nose in another country’s regulatory issues by trying to get Clarkson involved.

“If Kelly Clarkson goes ahead with the concert, she is by choice being a spokesman for the tobacco industry and helping them to market to children,” said Matt Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

- Danny Gokey is coming to Wild Bill’s this Friday night at 11 p.m. with presale tix just $15. A portion go to his charity foundation. I see it listed on Dannygokey.com but I can’t figure out how to buy tickets in advance. His single “The Best Days Are Ahead of Me” has been languishing in the lower reaches of the …

‘American Idol’ top 7 performance show recap, rankings, polls

On inspirational song night, front-runner Crystal Bowersox solidified her lead status by slaying “People Get Ready.” Everybody else was merely second place.

Who will go home? Probably nobody since “Idol Gives Back” is airing tomorrow. If they bother, I think the bottom three will likely be Casey James, Michael Lynche and “Vote for the Worst” favorite Tim Urban. And I think this might finally be the time Tim goes home. This is when Sanjaya was ousted, too, three years ago.

My rankings: 1. Crystal 2. Lee 3. Siobhan 4. Aaron 5. Michael 6.Casey 7. Tim

Alicia Keys was the mentor but nobody seemed to care much. I found her bland comments purely forgettable and I suspect most of the contestants did, too.

First up: Casey James (”Don’t Stop” ) – This was pretty pedestrian, standard …

Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum future guests on ‘Idol,’ Carly Smithson coming to Atlanta May 3

Lady_AntebellumAmong future guests on “Idol”: Christina Aguilera on the finale, Lady Gaga on May 5, and Lady Antebellum (in a pre-taped April 14 performance, left) and Justin Bieber (also pre-taped).

- People.com got a “behind the scenes” look at the rehearsals for tonight’s show. No song leaks but Crystal is going without her guitar and Lee took to a stool.

-I’m set to talk to former Atlantan and season seven finalist Carly Smithson on Thursday about her upcoming appearance at Center Stage May 3. She’s fronting We are the Fallen, which opens for Him. But there’s an obvious question that she seems to get bowed up about: Evanescence and former lead singer Amy Lee. Several members of Evanescence are part of We are the Fallen and Smithson herself has sung Evanescence songs before.

Someone who is obviously not a fan of Carly posted an audio interview she did with a Tacoma paper where she gets very defensive about the comparisons to Amy Lee. I’d embed the video but my bosses would frown upon it …

VH1 bringing back ‘Fantasia For Real,’ is a Crystal/Lee finale inevitable? The list of inspirational tunes

fantasia-for-real

VH1’s “Fantasia For Real” opened big with 2.3 million viewers its first night in January but slipped to below 800,000 by March.

Surprisingly, VH1 is giving the third-season “Idol” winner a second season anyway. I suspect Fantasia made the cut because VH1 has been struggling lately to find a big hit since its “Rock of Love”/”Flavor of Love” formula has lost steam and its “Rehab”/”Fit Club” shows are only doing okay.

The show’s breakout star was Fantasia’s brother Teenie, who came across as spoiled and entitled and a bit lazy living off his sister’s success, yet resenting it at the same time.

Fantasia is hoping for a comeback on the music charts the same way Monica did thanks to her recent reality show. Her new album is due out in May.

Will “Idol” bother to cut anybody on Wednesday on “Idol Gives Back”?

  • Why not? Plenty of folks deserve to go home already.
  • No. It won’t fit into the “Idol Gives Back” feeling so they’ll repeat season 6 and nix two people next …

Carrie Underwood wins ACM Entertainer of the Year

AP

Carrie Underwood won ACM Entertainer of the Year again last night.

She became the first female entertainer to win twice in a row.

Perhaps the fact Taylor Swift lost indicates some signs of backlash against her, I’d fathom. Plus, the ACM voters tend to be more conservative than the CMA crowd.
