Siobhan Magnus came up with the scream in the shower, wants to go into theater

siobhan-magnus_barker_performance-550x442

Siobhan Magnus is too amorphous to become a real pop star in my mind. But she already knows where she might be at home: Broadway. That makes perfect sense for her sensibility and her voice.

In various exit interviews, she said she loves acting: “I’ve had a lot of experience in different kinds of theater—musicals and Shakespeare and I love acting. I do aspire to someday be in something like ‘Phantom of the Opera’ or ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’—any kind of opera or Broadway-type musical.”

And she admitted to loving all sorts of music and would like to meld it all, which makes no real sense in the real world as a musical artist but hey, that’s why she felt all over the place any given week:

From jazz and soul and R&B and blues to rock and punk and big bands—I love everything. I’ll hopefully eventually be able to create something that is my own sound but that also takes from everything that I ever loved—not just Courtney Love and Rob Zombie (laughs).

And yes – it sounds like she’s been torturing people with her scream for years, first developed in the shower. This was not an affectation to ape Adam Lambert:

“I’m pretty sure I figured out how to do that in the shower in high school one night. I’m an avid shower singer much to the dismay of my family and my neighbors. I was singing a Kelly Clarkson song, and I went to hit one note and I was able to resonate it in a different part of my head, that I could belt it that high. Ever since I figured it out I stared to use it more and more with different stuff. In school choirs, and in my band, and it became very useful with the style of singing that I like to do. At a particular time it came in handy, I was singing with my friend’s band and we did great gig in the sky by Pink Floyd. I had a blast just wailing on those huge notes in a battle of the bands, and we won. One of my favorite singers of all time is Janis Joplin. I learned very much through imitation. When I want to hear a singer that I love, I would try and emulate that, that kind of added up into the way I sing today.”

She also said she wants to be remembered her for “Paint it Black” performance, which was indeed one of her better ones.

Idol Chatter fed her a good idea if she had been around for Sinatra week:

So you were thinking about Sid Vicious’ My Way for next week?

You know, I did think about that. I was going to do that song, probably, if I was still here. And his version rocks.

Ellen DeGeneres said she though Siobhan could make the top 3. A lot of us thought that, especially early on.

MTV also provides a nice review of her fashion sensibility, if you’d call it that.

Someone in a previous blog mentioned that he found Siobhan’s enunciation annoying. I never thought about it but that is part of what makes me not like her. She doesn’t separate her words. I find that irritating:

I wonder how long it took for that interview. At the pace with which she speaks I could see it taking HOURS.

Siobhan was always too ‘out there’ for my tastes. And the facial expressions always made me want to listen, rather than look.

And listening to her talk made me want to try and finish her sentences for her!

Sobhan’s main problem right now is she lacks maturity. Much as she thinks it’s a strength to just sing and perform as whatever she thinks is good and enjoyable at the moment, that’s not being a professional; that’s being a young girl without a clue. Lack self awareness of your strengths and weaknesses as a performer will be a roadblock, and that’s why she’s not on the show anymore. She’s all over the place.

I’d like to be a football player, and a doctor, and the president of the United States, and a fireman. Oh, and I’m also 5 years old. You need to pick a major, in a genre that you both like AND have talent in, and go after it with focus and purpose.

Jack of many trades, master of none. She needs to look at performances like “House” and “Wicked Game” as examples of music she both likes AND performs well, while giving up on trainwreck experiments like “Any Man of Mine”, “Through The Fire” or “Superstition”. The crap that might be fun to sing in your shower, or play dress-up with your girlfriends, but pick the style that best fits your talents and keep the career focus locked in with laser-like precision.

Alan Jackson may sing “50 Cent” in his pickup truck for all we know, but he’s sure as hell not going to put out a rap record.

It’s pretty clear that when she was picking whatever she wanted to sing she could nail it. When she had to stay within the confines of a genre or performer, then she had some serious trouble pickiing the best songs for her style.

Just an aside, the tattoo on Siobhan’s arm is the cover picture of the Edward Gorey book “The Gashlycrumb Tinies”. Gorey’s illustrations are very Tim Burtonish. About as far from Mary Poppins as you can possibly get.

Kelly was one of the rare performers that I think actually could (should?) be a true variety star, but she also had the chops and the attitude to take on anything and make it work. She slayed Big band, R&B, Disco, Aretha, Motown, Pop, Rock, and even some country with Riba. There isn’t a single musical style that I can’t picture Kelly performing, and performing at the top level.

But, Kelly is uniquely gifted in that respect, and therefore shouldn’t be the model for others to copy, lest they want to flush there careers down the toilet.

Carrie is actually the model the Idols should copy, meaning combine great vocal ability with s specific genre and just go for it with complete focus.

Harriett, aww, thanks for trying. Someone I know is going 2nd row. Lucky! It’s alright, I will see her when she’s a married woman. I won’t be the same, but I’ll still enjoy it.

Siobhan was an interesting character. I liked her personality and could see her as someone to hang with, but her tone wasn’t for me. She gets bonus points for name dropping Kelly, tho. I kid, I kid.

There’s the conflict again: Sing songs that stick to “who you are as an artist” vs. “a great singer can sing anything.” I am a believer of the latter, partly because I was spoiled by Kelly. But I see the point of the former. The problem is, imo, that these kids don’t necessarily know WHO they are yet. Expecting Katie, Siobhan and/or Aaron to be so defined is a bit unjust. Am I the only one thinking that this whole knowing who you are spiel is Idol getting lazy?

There are some ‘artists’ (does anyone else think Kara has given that term a bad connotation?) who sing well enough but, for some reason, don’t necessarily connect with me. Sometimes it’s their particular phrasing or a certain tonal quality (or lack thereof).

Siobhan (”for me”) falls into that category. She hasn’t learned that the high-end ‘glory note’ doesn’t fit in every song. A power ballad, ..a real full-of-attitude R&B (read that Aretha) wailer, sure. Of course. Fair play to ya. But NOT every song you sing!

Trying to fit it in on a light, fun, sarcastic little song like ‘Any Man Of Mine’ was just stupy!

I thought I read somewhere that not only was Harry Connick Jr. next week’s Sinatra mentor, but he will also be arranging the Idols’ songs. Anyone know if that’s the case? I might just be crazy–working through final exams. It’s weird being both a teacher and a student–I have exams to do (well, they’re all research papers) and an exam to write (thankfully, multiple choice).

Deirdre–read your link about Usher. Doesn’t he have a point? We’ve all talked about the Idol Machine and how sometimes we would prefer our favorite contestants not win it all so they will have more freedom to be artists (and Kara definitely hasn’t ruined that word for me).

In addition, talent shows like this one offer shortcuts to fame, sometimes before people are actually ready (I’m looking at you, Aaron Kelly).

I don’t know how that couldn’t hurt the music business.

JTesla

Thanks Deirdre, Usher is a dunce. “Television is a lie. It can’t happen overnight” umm hello most modern pop acts, and all acts going back through the music video age, and a lot of acts before that. In fact, hello all acts of the television age which is covers all of the rock age doesn’t it? Sure there are some true artists in there, but the true artist was made big by television just as much as the non-artist.

if you think about it, most of the picks for AI HAVE been singing for a long time — very few “just started” with AI … many (think Carly, for one, Bo, Taylor, Daughtry, Cookie, …. a LOT of the contestants who are older than their teens have been singing for years … and even some of the teens — Archie was a contestant on that junior show, what was the name of it? and Allison Iraheta had been singing for years too… so, AI MAY/MIGHT/COULD/CAN be a quick step forward for someone, or not, but it’s just a stepping stone on the path that most have already chosen one way or another already. Many times it’s been shown that it was “one last chance” to break away from the life/job they were settling for instead of pursuing a singing career because of personal/life/family situations — AI opened a possible door for them — for others, it’s just one more audition, one more small success on the path they probably would take anyway. i don’t see it as “sudden” success by ANY means. Heck, the competition itself is pretty darn grueling, not a piece of cake!

linny ,,,=^..^=,,,

I guess that the idea that AI is “instant” success would have to also be applied to YouTube…look at the number of “acts” or “bands” that have found viral popularity and actually ended up making it to stages and performances that just 10 years ago would have been unheard of.

Deirdre

And excuse me but which Idol has been an “instant success”? Most of them we forget about as fast as we turn them into rock stars during the course of the show.

And amateur shows with the promise of big success have been around way longer than tv.

The voting public really doesn’t know much about real natural born singers. It’s too bad Siobhan was voted off for that simple reason. She has ‘STAR” quality and will go the distance in the long run.
