Who is gone tonight on ‘American Idol’?

Siobhan going home

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

In a bit of a shock, Siobhan Magnus is going home. And there’s no “save” for the judges.

She had a good voice but had trouble creating a consistent musical sound. And that screech was irritating. I also didn’t like her stiff performance style and facial expressions while she sang. I could never buy into whatever she was trying to sell.

But she sure was odd with her clothing picks and hair styles. Vote for the Worst can’t be happy about this at all. She was the immediate post-Tim Urban pick and wasn’t able to get the votes to keep her around.

Everyone was expecting Michael Lynche to go home again. In fact, I didn’t even have Siobhan among my bottom three picks. (I had chosen Aaron and Crystal.) Instead, it was Michael, Casey James and Siobhan.

And amazingly, “Idol” finished on time. Actually, it was early.

Next week: Harry Connick Jr. mentors with Frank Sinatra songs as the theme for the top 5.

Coveritlive polls:

Frank Sinatra night: 94% like it 6% do not
Sons of Sylvia 20% A 40% B 13% C 27% F
Lady Antebelleum’s “Need You Now” 47% loved it 47% loved it but tired of song 6% meh
Shakira/Rascal Flatts 22% A, 22% B, 17% C, 33% F%
Who is going home: 74% Siobhan, Casey 26%
Rascal Flatts 22% A, 44% B, 22% C, 11% F

Whos’ going home among top 3: 21% Siobhan, 74% Michael, 5% Casey

I honestly don’t think a female can win AI again…..if you trust Wikipedia, they indicate that of the 47 million albums sold from AI contestants, 85% are from contestants from the south……

And since Bowersox is from Ohio (a northern state) and female, she is not going to win either…….f*ck it…..my favorite is gone…..

By rigging the vote and having the most talented singer kicked tonight, Idol lost me as a fan. It is so clear that Siobhan is the best, yet Simon did his unprofessional best to gut her. And he won. Thank God, he will be gone next year. Good grief.

I will not watch Idol nor will my friends and relatives for the rest of this season.

Aaron apparently did get all of Tim’s voters. Can’t believe that. I’m glad Casey is still here, but I’m disappointed that Siobhan is gone. I too thought Mike was a goner, and I would’ve been fine with that. I’m more bummed than I thought I would be about Siobhan.

Well Shibonbon, you lost your way dear. Something happened, whether it was bad advice or nerves we’ll never really know. But at least you reminded those doubters out there why you are special by singing one of your strongest songs as a going away present. There isn’t a lot of people in the world that can sing like she can. I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t the last we’ve heard of Shibonbon and I’ll go as far as saying she was the best #6 to ever grace Idol’s stage.

The rest of the live performances were really good tonight. I thought Shakira’s was fantastic. Cool song, cool choreography, great singing while dancing. Nice job. I also thought that Sons of Silvia (or whatever their name was) sounded great too. That was some good singing. In fact, out of all the performances tonight Rascal Flats was the least inspiring, and they weren’t that bad.

Back to Shibonbon, by last nights performance I wont say she didn’t deserve to go home. But overall, I’d much rather see her sing next week than Aaron, Lee, Mike, or Casey. But alas it isn’t meant to be.

She wasn’t my favorite, but I’ll miss her quirkiness. She was fun to watch.
I’m glad Aaron is still in it. He sure has a lot of heart and soul for a 17 year old.

Only reason Shibion made it this far is lack of talent in the group this season. The voting stuff has become way too manipulated. America should pick bottom 3 and judges should choose who goes home. My guess is it would have been big mike. No way Casey should have been bottom 2.

Re-posting this from the end of the live blog:

I am so disgusted!

Lee – mainstream and too frequently off pitch (but easy on the eyes)
Mike – mainstream and okay at best
Casey – mediocre with occasional good performances
Aaron – mediocre boy band, boy voice
Crystal – excellent voice, but boxed in to the same type of sound each week

Siobhan – excellent voice, polarizing, interesting, never know what she’ll come up with, look forward to seeing what she brings.

Gee – guess who’s gone.

UGH!

Sad to see Siobhan go this early, but was not really surprised. She never really reprised her first couple performances, and the last few weeks her popularity was rapidly shrinking.

I am very happy Big Mike is still around to torture his haters for another week, especially with Sinatra being right up his alley. :-)

Mike…please tell me you did not use the word “haters”!

I think Casey and Lee are going to have trouble with Sinatra. Casey because he’s just to immobile a performer to get in the groove of it and Lee because most Sinatra songs require the singer to stay on key. Even Sinatra had trouble as he got older.

Aaron and Mike should have no trouble at all and Crystal will nail it the way she nails almost everything else.

Well that concludes the Idol experiment for me. Hysterically dumb Nickelodeon/MTV type show for the kiddies and any looser adults (like me I guess) dumb enough to watch. Absolutely insipid waste of time so that human crotch Cowell can line his pockets. I’ll never pollute my mind with this nasty, pretentious garbage again. Yuck. Time for absolution and a hot shower. Well the best went home. When Siobhan sings people call it screaming its not screaming its called TALENT. I wanted Casey to go home his voice isnt that good and why do people think hes cute he is UGLY. I really dont like crystal bowersox or should i say crystal bowerSUX her voice isnt that good she cant sing without an instrument she thinks she already has the game won but fyi you SUCK. she needs to go. aaron is my favorite he did such a good job last night. but yeah Siobhan was the best.

Let’s look back at last night’s review and admire the all knowing Neg.

————————————————————————–

April 27th, 2010
10:16 pm

Neg’s proclamation:

1. Crystal – She seemed uneasily bashful with the song’s message, but was perfect in her vocals.

2. Lee – I only liked the opening. For the first time he showed his softer tone, which I thought was brilliant. Then he resorted to his single not gravel, which just another faceless Lee growl song.

3, Aaron: Cheeseboy nailed it, but the Archie wannabe vibe annoyed me. I’m so tired of his endless ballads.

4. Mike: Well done in general, but I felt he was putting on an act.

5. Casey: You sold out to Michael Bolton ballad music! Up yours, pretty boy!!! Boooooo!

6. Siobhan: WHAT A FACKING MESS! Easily her worst performance to date. Embarrassingly phony with that crowd hand slap, and the point marks for her singing on the back stage was so overstaged and wooden it was uncomfortable to watch. No believability whatsoever, and that shriek at the end was just horrific. Oh, and that outfit…repugnant!

Jeez, folks. Don’t you remember the tiny disclaimer flashed on the credits? The PRODUCERS decide the outcome of this show. Voting is just theater, and a fortune is made each week from the voting/texting that’s done. We’ve stopped caring about the outcome years ago. Here’s how we view the show: We record it on DVR and then watch only the performances later, skipping the judge’s comments and commercials. Takes about 30 minutes. Then, on Wednesday night we tune in for the last ten minutes of the show to see who gets the boot, which is all that matters anyway.Keep in mind that the bootee still gets to tour for a year. This is big business, friends.Simon may not be on camera next year, but he still owns this franchise. And he still runs every aspect of this show. It is entertaining to see how gullible Americans are, and how they can be led around by the nose by 19 Entertainment.

I’m done with Idol for the rest of the year. Crystal is the best singer left, but that’s just because the others are ‘forgettable’. I wonder how long Shakira would have lasted? What a joke. Siobhan will be missed, but will be around a long time.

I cannot understand all the love for Siobhan. Glad she’s gone! Her low register sounded horrible. Very Nasally! Reminds me of Kermit the Frog. Maybe she should have done Rainbow Connection. Her recorded voice would have sounded horrible. They would have to do magic in the studio to get it to sound ok. I think the screeching is what kept her around so long and she didn’t sound so bad when she sang with power, but she would always wait to the end of the song…

Deirdre

April 29th, 2010
7:44 am

Morning!

Simon Cowell does NOT own this show. He has no monetary stake in it OR the singers. Except for his paycheck of course, which is substantial.

Why do you think Simon Cowell is leaving? He’s going to start a show that he DOES own and he CAN control.

Deirdre

April 29th, 2010
7:47 am

OK…this is what is wrong with this season.

There’s no one to stand behind who has serious talent. Even Crystal is a cubby-hole singer.

So, if we pick one singer that we like better than the others, we’re absolutely flummoxed when that singer is eliminated.

NONE of them are very good!!!!!!!!!! So whoever leaves…it doesn’t matter!

Now you all see how most black people feel when they kick off the black kids . It is not the fans who kick the singers off it is the producers read the credits it is there in black and white. I too had Aaron, Crystal & Siobhan in the bottom three. Lots of people don’t think Michael shoud’ve been saved, so he’ll go in the next 2-3. Still think it’s down to Lee & Crystal with Lee winning by a hair due to his pop image.

Deirdre

April 29th, 2010

The show “democratic”? What? It Never claimed to be a democracy.

Seriously, doesn’t this happen EVERY year? One particular contestant gets eliminated and the cries of “cheating”, “voter manipulation”, “racism” start echoing through all the blogs. Heck, I’ve done it myself!

The one thing the show DOES do, is make us believe that the person we, individually, think is the most talented will win. That’s baloney! We don’t all think alike. We don’t all think the same person is talented. Talent is subjective!

I like Siobhan and am sorry to see her go, but I’m not part of the “Idol Manipulated This” conspiracy crowd, sorry.

Many people think Siobhan lost her way, but I think she had a clear goal in mind. I’ve always though – in part based on her YouTube clips – that she was looking at the Idol stage as a Broadway audition. Many AI alums (Federov, Studdard, Maroulus, Fantasia, Hudson, Degarmo) have found sucess in musicals. Each week, Siobhan seemed to be aiming for that type of career more than for a recording contract.

veemmmgee

Siobahn either screamed, or sang through her nose – I didn’t really see any talent in that. This year is just not that great – the show needs to go with Simon – bye bye. I used to not want to miss it, now I could care less. It has just gotten old and tired…

One challenge for contestants is to start out good enough to develop a fan base – but not so good that you can’t improve each week. Back in Season 7 (I believe) Lakeisha came out in the first live show and was immediately crowned the front-runner. She could never top that performance.

Andrew peaked Hollywood week and couldn’t improve on that.
Siobhan peaked early on with “Think” – and could never (IMHO) out-do that performance.

I just think it’s ironic that Siobhan is getting criticized for her ’shriek’ when “The guy who cam in second to Kris Allen (you know, Kris, the guy who actually won?)” was lauded and adored for doing the exact same thing.

But that’s just me.

Harriett

Dierdre, you are right. But, I don’t get the gnashing of teeth over one person being eliminated. Don’t we KNOW what might happen to our personal favorite each week? We know, because we’ve seen it happen before, over and over–Chris Daughtry, etc. Mike is my personal favorite, but if he goes home, I am not going to stop watching the show. As a true fan, I will just pick a new favorite. I admit that this year’s crop leaves not much of a choice, if one’s favorite is gone, but goodness, this is a TV show!!

Kat

Thank God. Not only is Siobhan tone-deaf, she is literally going to ruin her vocal cords shrieking like that. I think my ears were bleeding after her last performance. The judges should be ahsamed for encouraging a “singing” style that could literally do her physical harm. Someone please tell her that screaming or “belting” is NOT singing. (It’s no coincidence that Fox 5 News ran a story about how singing the wrong way and vocal lessons for the very young can damage your voice permanently…right after the Tuesday night show.

I don’t really think that ShaBonBon having to say ShaByeBye last night was such a surprise. She hasn’t repeated the kind of performances that got so much attention at the beginning of the Top 10. Seems she was too interested in showing how different and quirky she was rather than putting some real thought into song selection.

And she fell into the trap of always trying to insert her vocal gymnastics (some might say vocal masturbation) into her song selection whether it fit with the tune or not. :-)

At the beginning she was at her very best. “Wicked Game” was the perfect choice, and she gave an amazing performance. Haunting, dark and beautiful, it was by far the high point of her run on the show. I was a big fan of hers after that performance, and thought she and Crystal would go neck-and-neck for the title.

Then she decided to go diva and take on Aretha’s “Think”. Well, like we saw last night, she was swallowed whole by the song as it was just too much for her thin vocals to handle, and she fell back to the pack.

The next week she redeemed herself with a haunting, killer performance of “House of the Rising Sun” that showed us the side of her we were so struck by in “Wicked Game”.

Alas, she then lost her way, this time for good, the next week with “Paint it Black”. It’s when she decided to take the leap from singer to actress, and transform her dark, hauntingly beautiful tone into a tasteless theatrical mess. The God-awful SHRIEK suddenly appeared along with all the overly dramatic stage set and costume. Some loved it for the shock value, but many others were turned off as she transformed into the polarizing “Adam-wannabe” contestant.

Everything that followed got progressively more annoying and gimmicky, until the epic disaster of “Any Man of Mine” that rivaled Kristy Lee Cook’s laughable “Eight Days a Week” for worst performance in Idol history.

If she had just kept it going with the deep, dark, haunting vibe of songs within her range, without all the overdone costume and theatrics and morphing into some perverse farce of herself, she would have had a much longer and more successful run.

From yesterday:

<i4. Crystal

Who will go home? I have no idea.

Like I said, I’ve got a faulty Magic 8 Ball.

Hey. At least I got Siobhan as my #6 pick! :-D

Siobahn has no low register and can only hit that one big note…she sounds weird as crap all the time when she sings low, hasn’t decided what type of artist to be, doesn’t appeal to the mainstream, and we’re suprsied she’s gone why??? This year’s talent, for all the hype, isn’t all it’s cracked up to be..Lee and Crystal are very talented…Casey is nothing more than a local bar/small venue type, Aaron looks like he’s gonna pee his pants every time he performs, Michael is BORING and we’ve already had a winner (Reuben) who was a better but still same type of, singer,

But at least I got Siobhan as #6!

Oh yes, I called it in yesterday blog – Siobhan gone.
She needs to understand you don’t have to scream at the end of every song, it sound real bad. “Feel Like a Woman” is a gritty rough song, she tried to sing it smoth like it was a broadway song or something, it was real bad.

She’s not bad I just don’t think AI is setup right for her, she need to stick to her type of songs, She could be top 3 one week, then very bottom the next.

I would like AI go to format where singers just pick their own songs each week, or even have to write their own songs, she would have done better.

Frank Sinatra songs = boreing, I may have to skip next week.

Just two small nitpicks with your dissertation Neg. I personally thought “Think” was her third best performance of the year right behind “wicked game” and “rising sun”. I also think she sang it brilliantly last night.

And as I pointed out earlier, I actually had her rated #1 this week with the only minus being the useless glory note at the end of “Any man”.

But, that is just personal taste, and even with ranking her high this week, I am not shocked or upset that she was voted off. She has just sort of drifted through the last few weeks, and had fallen from top 2 to just “MEH” for me.

Mike is easily the best talent out of the group. It’s never easy for a Black person to win, because the vocal styles we use are so much different than most White artists. Not better or worse, just different. And unfortunately, the only acceptable time to sing a song from a Black artist is during “Motown” week. That era has it’s place in history and is the foundation of soul/r&b, but it has long since changed and been reshaped and they AI does not respect a person that does sing that genre.

That’s OK, Mike…you may have also loved KLC’s “Eight Days a Week”, too. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Mike needs to go. They wasted the save on him when they shouldn’t have. Siobhan wasn’t the best singer by far, but I too liked her quirkiness. I think Crystal is losing steam, and that Lee and Casey are gaining it. Poor little Aaron. To me, he’s not a terible singer, he just don’t seem like Idol material to me. That’s just me though.

Rob, just a nitpick – Soul/R&B were around long before Motown. MOTOWN was a refinement of the sound that had begun back in the 1800’s with black gospel and had been tweaked and refined through the years — from Scott Joplin and his ragtime experiments, to Charlie Parker and his amazing Jazz, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, on to Ella Fitzgerald and her amazing vocals, All of the amazing blues singers of the 30’s 40’s & 50’s, then through Barry Gordy’s amazing dream in that little house in Detroit.

Soul/R&B is a fusion of all of those sounds and all of those pioneers – MOTOWN was just the vehicle that brought it into the main stream.

Unfortunately many black artists have now devolved that sound into the miasma that is hip hop and rap.

The result being that artists like Michael Lynche, Ruben Studdard, Melinda Doolittle, etc etc are compared only to giants of the past, and as in the case of Ruben forced to record albums that do not embrace the true Soul they possess but instead pander to the “sound of today”.

Had AI marketed Ruben as the new Barry White/Teddy Pendergrass I have no doubt he would have been huge (no pun intended) — instead they forced him into a rap/hip hop niche that his voice was ill-suited for. his follow on Gospel album, and the recent “Return of the Velvet Teddy Bear” were amazing vocal efforts, unfortunately falling on now deaf ears.

Y’all, Deirdre’s right again. Every year we go through this cycle of high excitement at the audition stage (interspersed with shrieks of laughter at the William Hungs)and then grow increasingly disaffected and threaten boycotting and all manner of dire consequences directed at the producers.

The producers are about money and even now they’re reeling it in in barrels. They don’t give a flying f who wins, and the judges, two of ‘em anyway, are looking for potential recording artists. Again, money.

We have our faves and in the end they all fade except one, but many are reborn post-Idol. Amen, so be it. It’s still a fun ride.

Siobhan was the only original artist on the show. IMO, she is the only one that will make it as an artist. The rest all sound like like someone else.

Crystal – Janis Joplin
Casey – Kenny Wayne Sheppard
Mike – Luther Vandross, and Marvin Gaye
Tim – Billy Joel / GRunge rock
Aaron – Season 7 runner up. His name escapes me.

Mike should have been long gone. Black vote keeping him around.

Aaron should have been long gone as well. Teenage girl vote keeping him around.

True about the one man’s trash thing Neg – but no, I did not like Kristies “eight days a week”. That was a train wreck on the level of Kellie’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and was in close competition to devolving into any performance of Sanjaya.

Mike$ and Rob…..you both make very interesting points. I agree with both of you. I do believe that Fantasia and Rueben were the last black winners we will see on that show. I’ve noticed each season since Fantasia won that the judges always seem to pick apart any R&B type of singer.
