Next week: Alicia Keys guest mentoring inspirational songs; Elton John joins ‘Idol Gives Back’

Next week’s theme is inspirational songs, as I figured. R&B singer Alicia Keys will be the mentor.

elton JohnFox has also released a note that part-time Atlantan Elton John will sing next Wednesday during “Idol Gives Back” on behalf of his AIDS Foundation. He joins Carrie Underwood, Black Eyed Peas, Annie Lennox, Jeff Beck, Joss Stone and Mary J. Blige.

Season one “Idol” co-host Brian Dunkelman spoke to Vulture about Ryan Seacrest’s flat-lined joke that Dunk would be co-hosting “Idol Gives Back” Tuesday.

He took it surprisingly well.

It must feel pretty nice that people cheered for you.
I’m flattered, if not touched, that people actually clapped. It’s a good feeling. And hey, the Pasadena Civic Auditorium is literally walking distance, so if they need me, I’m available.

Queen Latifah is co-hosting, not Dunkelman. But “Idol” should at least invite him now.

-Ratings race: Tuesday’s “Idol” beat Monday’s “Dancing With the Stars” by a mere 77,000 viewers: 20.639 million to 20.562 million. DWTS has beaten “Idol” the past two weeks in total viewers.

I wish they would all sing their own music. I hate that most of them butcher the “original” songwriters intent. Idol is nothing more than canned crap. Oh yea, one last thing, Elton sucks and has sucked for years now.

I hadn’t realized that Dunkelman had left of his own accord rather than being forced out. (I didn’t watch Idol until S7, so I was only vaguely aware that it began with two hosts). I do think that changes things a bit. It’s *very* mean to jab at someone who got kicked out… but it isn’t quite as mean to jab at someone who left under his own power.

As for last night’s show… glad to see Andrew go. Not so happy to see Katie go. I must have looked silly sitting on the sofa with my eyes closed and fingers in my ears while “The guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won?” sang.

I know I differ with many of the female denizens of this blog, but I actually find him visually repulsive.

As for last night, Andrew was a no brainer and his sing off was the consummate proof of his vote-off. he sounded good, but there was just little to no meat on that bone.

Was a little sad to see katie get the axe before Tim or Aaron (just personal preference), but I can also understand it in a way. She has not don’t anything to create a fan base, and has been in the voting bottom all along. Aaron, while in the same league as Katie, has not shown voting weakness; and Tim has actually stepped it up quite a bit and seperated himself from those two.

Speaking of Tim, I am with NEG on this one, he is a legitimate candidate for the Top 5, and may go Top 4 or Top 3 – SERIOUSLY.

Here is my reasoning. Aaron is showing his weaknesses more each week, and I think Tim is beginning to pull the tween vote away from him more and more. Big Mike has shown some voting weakness, so all signs point to Aaron going in 7th and Mike in 6th. That leaves Tim in the TOP 5.

Now you have Lee and Casey splitting the Gravelly Voiced Rocker vote. So it is quite possible one of them goes at number 5, or if Siobhan continues to slide she could be out at 5. Just switch those and Viola you suddenly have a Top 3 of Crystal, Lee/Casey, and the TUrbanator (TM).

Sorry, Mercedes, but I swore a while back that I would never again type his name. (At the time he was the most undeserving but overexposed ‘celebrity’ on the planet, so I thought I’d refer to him in a way that reminded folks that he did not win.) So far, I’ve been able to keep that pledge.

But even Rodney thought the song was mediocre.

I think “The guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won?)” feels like he has to overcompensate for weak songs and less-than-stellar singing with theatrical and overproduced stage effects. Remember his dramatic descent down the staircase last season? (He asked for – and got – more production effects than any other contestants.)

Max Weinberg of the ‘E Street Band’ has the smallest drum set of any major band. When asked why, he said “Anything else is just overkill.”

A great performance doesn’t need all the extras.

Uhhh, RH, maybe you ‘figured’ that because Ryan announced it during the show!

I’m okay with Katie going home, I guess. Since she was in the bottom 3 a couple times it stands to reason that she was already having trouble garnering the votes.

Still, she has done much better than Aaron, IMO. He hasn’t even come close to a ‘moment’ so far, while Katie’s “Let It Be” was excellent!

Rickster, are you anti-gay or something? You harp on Adam who is so obviously BETTER than Kris Allen could EVER be!!! Adam is entertaining, can hit notes that haven’t even been invented yet and his theatrics ARE part of his appeal. So with Kris – what do you get? A geeky average cheeseball who can barely draw the attention of a swarm of bees because he is such a snoozefest. If I want to sleep dude, I’ll go to church!!!! Bring on the Adams of the world. Even SIMON knows the wrong guy took the title last year. But at least Adam gets to sing his own music and doesn’t have to sing something stupid like Live Like I’m Dying. By the way, all this time I have totally misread your phrase “The guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won)”. In an old west saloon, a guys bursts through the doors and yells “Everyone Run! Big Jake’s a’ comin!”

All the patrons hurry out as fast as they can, but before the bartender can escape, the doors swing inward.

A huge man, dressed in black walks in. He has an eye patch, a nasty scar on his cheek and two guns with multiple notches on the handles. He swaggers up to the bar, pounds his hand down and orders the bartender to, “gimme a shot and a beer.”

Terrified, the bartender complies.

The man downs the shot and chugs the beer. Then, without a word, he turns and heads to the door.

The bartender meekly asks, “Is there anything else?”

After that sickening performance on the awards show I will never watch him or spend one dime on any of his music. KPH – tell that to KISS, David Bowie, The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, Dee Snider, Green Day…etc. Not all musicians have to look and sound gravel-like. Know what I mean? Glam rock is just another form of music. I’m not a fan AT ALL of Southern Rock – LynSkyn, 38 Special, Allman Brothers, etc. So if you don’t like gimmicks, I’m guessing you didn’t like 80’s music – Alternative or HairBands because both those genres exaggerated the meaning of the word gimmick with the make-up, spandex, hair, rhinestones. And some of the best music and bands EVER came out of the 80’s.

The thing that bothers me most about “The guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won?)” – aside from the ever-changing hairstyles, fingernail polish, guyliner, etc, – is the fact that – to me, at least – he’s not on the stage for any reason other to entertain/promote/glorify himself – not to entertain his audience.

His ‘antics’ at the (I think) American Music Awards showed a great deal of (channeling my inner Simon) ’self-indulgence.’ The VAST majority of people who tuned into that show did not tune in to see him exhibit such sickening, boorish behavior. They wanted to be entertained – not shocked.

But did “the guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won)” care? No. He went out of his way to do whatever the heck he wanted to make whatever point he felt needed to be made – and the heck with the audience.

When an audience thinks the artist puts his/her audience above their own… that is an audience that will dwindle quickly. “The guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won?)” may have learned that too late.

I sure hope so.

KPH – I’m all for great talent, but the lyrics and especially the musical arrangement is far more important than the actual technical vocal abilities. That’s why someone like Dylan or an elderly Johnny Cash is so well thought of.

I’ve promoted Casey all year, and he’s clearly got the best guitar/vocal combo. And, I’m starting to like Tim who has arranged some clever stuff. I especially liked how he realized his Leonard Coehen song got his best response of the year and has now done a few more in that style.

“KISS, David Bowie, The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, Dee Snider, Green Day”

Most of these bands are well below par for the point you’re trying to make. Kiss was a 3rd rate Rolling Stones. Bowie decent. The cure, forgotten. Flock of Seagulls, only famous today fot that GTA:3 theme song (yes it was I Ran). Dee Snider was in Twisted Sister right? Are you seriously using them as an example. I’m so glad Katie is gone, although she gave a decent (not stellar, just decent) performance in Beatles week. Anybody with pitch problems Should. Not. Be. On. American. Idol. And Katie has mondo pitch issues–even more frequent than Lee’s or Siobhan’s. So I’m glad she’s gone. Say what you will about Tim. His range is limited? Yes. He’s not very good? Sure. But he’s almost always on pitch. I will take a limited on-pitch singer over someone with a wide off-key range any day, and almost every Katie performance had some stinkers of notes. Her attitude was also a huge turn-off.
Something else… Sometimes, singers who entertain me (Adam, Siobhan) aren’t singers whose music I’d buy. I loved watching Adam, but Kris gets way more airtime on my iPod because he’s just easier on the ears. Adam’s a great performer, and his concert would definitely be more of a show than Kris’ concert (and by the way, the two of them are friends, and it’s a shame their fans can’t show a similar level of maturity). Still, I’d rather hear Kris if I’m going to listen for more than three minutes.

Agreed ugaaccountant. The lyrics and arrangement are very important but if sang by someone that sounds like a dying calf in a hail storm and played by someone who sounds like a cat running across a keyboard then the lyrics and arrangement get lost in ear splitting horror of it all. Dont you agree? :-)

“I will take a limited on-pitch singer over someone with a wide off-key range any day”

There’s dozens of on-pitch soloists in every chorus and choir in America, including all the contestants on this show. It’s alot tougher to stay perfect with 20 million people watching.

In another “What The insert your favorite expletive are the AI Idiots thinking? moment, Nadya Suleman (aka “The Octomom”) is going to appear in a comedy skit on the “Idol Gives Back” show.

“There’s dozens of on-pitch soloists in every chorus and choir in America”…uga that’s one of my points. Kris Allen is “one” of those everyday people. If I want to hear “everyday choirs”, I’ll just attend the local high school glee club. I’m looking for something different. Something unique. Something that sets an artist aside from ALL others. That’s Adam. The guy is awesome. I don’t get that vibe from him that he’s just out there for himself. Look at how he mentored these kids this week. He was one of the best EVER. He’s simply confident and wants to please HIS fan base which I am one of. Those who do not like him? Well, he’s not interested in pleasing those people. He knows WHO his fans are and WHAT his FANS expect and he delivers. Top 3 Idols ever: Kelly, Carrie and Adam. IMO. Daughtry is great too but his music is one facade and you know what kind of sound he’s going to bring – pop rock that’s not offensive to anyone and still is a bit edgy for those into more cool (i.e., Blake Lewis was not cool)

I hear ya ugaaccountant. A lot of high notes come out so bad it’s like fingernails screeching on a chalkboard to me. A lot of Lewdberts gave me that skin crawling feeling. A vocalist with several octaves to work with that knows their limits however is very entertaining to me.

Oh thank you JTESLA for helping me make my point. All those hair-bands of the 80’s wore make-up and spandex. While I wasn’t a groupie for EVERY hair-band, some made some great music and some were cheese. One of my favorites was Queensryche “Silent Lucidity”. And look at Bon Jovi. Still going strong and have turned a corner drawing in middle America with it’s country vibe. One of my least favorite 80’s – Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” and anything Bret Michaels fronted. But they all wore make-up and had HUGE fan bases. My personal favorite band was Duran Duran whom I saw in concert a few years ago with the release of their Astronaut album. Nick Rhodes to this day still wears more make-up than Tammy Faye but he looks good. And they were one of the most successful bands of the 80’s – so Stevie Ray Vaughan did not always know what he was talking about. He probably loved “Free Bird and cigarette lighters” too.

KPH – Adam does not scream. And he has no limits. Southern Baptists are not going to like him no matter if Jesus himself annointed Adam into heaven. They simply can’t get past his sinful ways of being gay.

Skittles, you’re right. “The guy who came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won?)” doesn’t scream.

He screeches. :-D

That’s not even funny man. Don’t be joking with us like that. That is a joke right? What am I saying, of course it is a joke.

I’m going to start making a list of reasons why this season of Idol will be my last ‘full time watching’ season. I thought that “two hour show when one hour will do” would be at the top of the list, but Octomom will bump even that.

Wait, Adam Lambert was gay? Next thing I know, you’ll be telling me Clay Aiken was too.

Notice Clay sold alot of tickets and stayed in the industry this long because he never crossed the line into indecency on stage. Elton John, the guy from Queen, Michael Jackson, all gay men, but at least on stage they kept it acceptably tame.

If they give Octomom the same treatment they give all the no-talent delusional wannabees, it will be ok.

ugaaccountant, I have to disagree, I don’t feel that it will be ok.

No-talent delusional wannabees are people just trying to get on TV once.

Octomom is trying to leech off society and find a source of funding to support and fund her mental deficiencies. She needs professional mental health help provided by someone who truly has her, her family, and her future in mind. Idol’s providing a stage for her, any stage, is denying her what she needs by providing revenue source even if it is an indirect revenue source.

Octomom is a modern day circus freak.
