Jason Derulo and David Archuleta joining Rihanna Wednesday. And is Ellen DeGeneres an ‘Idol’ savior?

archuletaJason Derulo, who broke out with a major hit with “Whatcha Say” a few weeks back, has his second hit “In My Head” near the top of the charts. So he’s now joining “American Idol” Wednesday along with Rihanna during the results show. David Archuleta will also reprise “Imagine” from two years ago.

Three songs means no group sing, right? We can only hope. That leaves less time for other “Idol” time-killing techniques from years’ past. The dreaded Q&A. Canned interviews with Ryan. Asking the judges questions about who deserved to go. Video of the “Idols” at a film opening. (Oh, wait. They just did that last week along with a painful infomercial of some film I refuse to mention.)

Alessandra Stanley of the New York Times sure likes Ellen DeGeneres. Heck, most people like Ellen DeGeneres. She’s a likable person. But is she really that big a deal for “Idol”? I’m not fully convinced. Yes, she brings a touch of genuine humor to the judging at times – but not much else.

More than in any other of her ventures, Ms. DeGeneres’s performance on America’s favorite television show suggests how hard she works to seem effortlessly funny and how determined she is to be openly but unthreateningly gay. She doesn’t need the work, but she appears to want the demographic — “Idol” is her chance to expand her reach to a younger, more pop-obsessed audience, the Hulu Generation of viewers, who prefer to download their entertainment rather than press the remote. And Ms. DeGeneres, funny, irreverent and also quite cautious onstage, is setting herself up as the Jon Stewart figure on “Idol” that people under 30 can trust.

- Early on, I wasn’t a fan of Vote for the Worst. But I’ve grown to admire their moxie. As the show takes itself way too seriously, this site is the perfect antidote. And I really think its embrace of Tim Urban has indeed kept him alive. Here’s a great interview of the founder David Della Terza through AOL.

Some people are saying this is the worst season ever. You must be so thrilled.
Oh, it’s the season of Vote for the Worst. That’s what we’re saying. I mean, this is our season, because, basically, everyone is so bad, there’s no shortage of people for us to pick. The only bad thing is, we like [it] when there’s good contestants too, and there aren’t any great contestants this year. When Didi went home, people were going to be upset, but no one’s, like, fuming mad, because she wasn’t that good. We like it better when there’s someone really terrible and then the good people go home. If it’s the mediocre people going home, no one’s really going to be that upset with us.

And here’s Anoop Desai on “Good Day Atlanta” yesterday:

really? everyone sleeping? Idol is just plain boring. I’m tired of the remakes of all the “oldies”. I am from that generation and listen to Idol to catch up on the current stuff. I haven’t downloaded one song this year because no song has been worth it. My favorite was Heartless last year. Who wants to listen to “Imagine” again?

idol has resorted to bringing back past contestants who were popular it seems in an effort now to remind people how good the show used to be, lol. though still a good ratings draw, the erosion of viewership is beginning to be reflected in a way that can no longer be easily spun. the erosion may just be the natural progression /byproduct of the shows age, i dunno. they are fighting to do anything now to recreate lightning in a bottle, and restore idol as ‘must see’ tv, but i’m not sure if it will work. i like seeing the former idols return, but it’s odd bringing both david’s back to sing songs other than their own, or new singles. whatever, lol. face time is face time, and getting it in front of 19-20 million people nowadays on idol is still a coveted platform for many artists. we’ll have lambert in a week or so, and it’s up for grabs who the next former idols will be in the quest to boost these ratings.

OK, David Della Terza sounds like he’s 12. We like it better when there’s someone really terrible and then the good people go home. If it’s the mediocre people going home, no one’s really going to be that upset with us. Seriously, if you want people to be upset with you, why not just go toilet-paper somebody’s house? Or spray graffiti on a store front? Or put a flaming bag of dog poop on somebody’s front porch?

what’s more entertaining to me is watching idol slowly but surely begin to sink under its own weight, and the efforts the producers are going to resort to in an effort to try and salvage the season, shore up the ratings, and somehow convince and compel people after the show ends this season to buy tickets to the tour, and the cd’s from anyone getting signed to a label. kris and adam haven’t quite measured up to either cook’s or archuleta’s sales in singles or cd’s, and i just don’t see anyone from this season doing any better. this is going to be wayyyy more entertaining, lol.

Most people just write “D”, ncdafan.

If you read the rest of Rodney’s piece(you know, the part that isn’t about Archie ;-) ) you’ll see the whole Della Terza quote.

As for Ellen being THAT good. It’s a little over the top but I DO agree that she adds a quality to the show that wasn’t there before and I like having her there. However, if they gave me the choice of keeping Ellen or going back to 3 judges…I’m all for 3 judges.

hi d – hahah, good one. i’ve missed a lot of things this morning – need more java… i skimmed over rodney’s piece, but missed making the full connection with his name. i’m on the opposite side of the fence re ellen – i don’t see where she has really added anything to the chemistry, or the judging panel this season. her usual wittiness and ability to make the quick quip seems forced, and i just don’t think she has looked comfortable, at all, in her role. the 4 person panel imo didn’t work last year w/the kara addition, and it doesn’t work this year with the ellen one. she hasn’t hurt the show in a tangible way, but i don’t feel or see what she’s really added either. the 3 person panel, and the chemistry between randy, pauler and simon, in hindsight, seems to have been the better fit. it wasn’t broken, and didn’t need fixing, so tptb bear the blame for this one.

it wasn’t broken, and didn’t need fixing Is an excellent way to describe what’s wrong with Idol, ncadfan. My impression is that when Nigel Lythgoe left, the remaining producers felt the need to flex their muscle and “make the show their own”. Unfortunately, the show didn’t need the “help”.

a to the men about nigel d… never thought i’d be saying that, but i think idol starting going off the rails somewhere in the back of house with his departure. there were weeks and years i liked and loathed him, but looking back, idol seemed to run a much tighter ship under his guidance, and much of what he has said in the media about the backstage infighting and the egos has come to pass.

Ellen as a judge is a joke. Serves zero purpose other than a distraction. And I can’t imagine ANYONE wanting to purchase tickets for the Idol tour. This is the lamest group ever and to know they were hand picked to be the Top 24 by these “seasoned” judges makes me question their ability to know good from bad anymore. What amazes me is how everyone thinks Crystal is the greatest thing to come along since Carrie Underwood whereas Jason Castro was a similar artist to Crystal but WAY better. Yet, he received alot of flack for not being very good. Scratching my head on this one. Would love to see Crystal and Jason go song for song – Jason would blow her away.

Hey y’all,

I have a new theory about the subpar contestants this season. Other than the whole “Simon is sabotaging the show to make X Facto seem that much better.” Maybe having Hollywood Week and choosing the Top 24 so close to “air time” is to blame? At least it would help to explain why the contestants seems so nervous, etc. They didn’t have time to prepare.

…and why am I thinking about this, anyway? Clearly, the Urban Legend will OWN Beatles night. Gooo TURBAN!

Good morning. I have already said my piece about Ellen and how I don’t like here here, but do on her own show. I agree, D, that it will be nice to see Archie. I actually liked his voice, but the right David won that year. I like being reminded of good shows in the past and why I watched in the first place. I don’t think this group of contestants is bad. 100% obvious there is no mega-star here, but the final 10 were all fine.

What is bad is the production of the show. It is constantly getting worse. It’s already a dvr fast forward show for me, but at this point it’s almost ready to be a you tube show for only the best performances.

2 hours for 10 contestants should allow them to actually sing a whole song. But that would allow too much reality into the situation, so instead we get some unpopular talk show host making lame jokes and then Ryan making everyone in studio and at home uncomfortable. Hey Ryan, Didi’s not going to like you anymore if you keep making her look bad. Oh, too bad, you helped eliminate her. Great plan cassanova, you really blew that one.

Results shows are an hour of unwatchable garbage. One week the best thing about the result show was a Wham! song, so I don’t even want to get into what was the bad parts.

Hopefully Tim and Katie will sing something fun, since the pressure’s basically off. The judges hate them, so appeal to the audience. Tim’s already embraced this philosophy.

Didi’s perf WAS the worst one last week and she was properly voted off, but kudos, Didi, for telling the “commentators” how lazy, hurtful – and inconsistent- they are this season! Hadn’t expected so much spunk from such a wobbly contestant.

‘So David Archuleta doesn’t have anything new to offer so he has to do “Imagine” again? I may not be a fan, but let the kid do his own stuff.’

hi jtesla – i scratched my head w/this sentiment, same as when they brought cook back to sing ”jumping jack flash’… both are in the middle of writing and crafting their 2nd cd’s, still working on getting the 1st singles ready, so i understand the lack of new material to sing in that vein. both do have material on their debuts that could have been sung, so this seems like a producer ploy to bring them back, banking on creating that goodwill, warm fuzzy feeling of good idol seasons in the past… it’s regressive on idols part to go that way, not the david’s or any other former contestant that may be appearing in the same manner. david isn’t managed by 19m, but 19r still has a hook in him for a couple more years, so maybe the stipulation for appearing was reprising ‘imagine’… who knows with these producers this year, but it’s a bit of a head scratcher.

Sam , re “Crystal… is very Joplin, Aretha… would love to hear her do some Ronstadt” – what blocks me from getting interested in Crystal is her constant Janis Joplin imitation. If there is a Crystal Bowersox in her, I’d like to hear that. All previous Idol winners and notables have had a voice all their own, even the nasally challenged Kris Allen.

Despite the general lack of overall talent, I do have to admit to this being one of the more enjoyable seasons of AI for me — sue to something ugaacountant said — DVR.

Since I am in school on Tuesday’s, I don’t get to see the show until after I get home. I FFwd to the performances, watch them, MAYBE watch the judges, and the FFWD again. See the whole show in 30 minutes and none of the extra crap to ruin it.

I have determined this is the only way to watch Idol anymore.

The latest rumor is that “The First Lambert” is going to mentor next week? I have no words other than, “Are you serious?! Get the flock outta here!” But I guess he could do as good a job as Miley?

Re Lambert as the mentor. I think he might be singing on the results show but I doubt he’s a mentor. If he is, maybe he could instill some performance skills into this group.

As for Archie singing Imagine…my guess is because John Lennon wrote it and it being a Lennon/McCartney theme week…it only seems natural.

As for the show, we’ve been complaining about it since Lythgoe left and maybe a little before that. Seems like they would have realized by now that their clever “innovations” are nothing but crap!

It appears that the rumors of Adam Lambert mentoring may be true. We’ve talked before about having former Idols as judges but I don’t recall talking about having them as mentors. It’s actually a pretty good idea when you think about it. They’ve been through it…especially the ones who have made it all the way to top 3…..they have gained a lot of incite about what works and what doesn’t. They may have a better idea of how a contestant can meet the judges criteria. They can’t transfer their talent to these contestants but they might be able to teach them a few tricks.
