Who gets into the top 10 on ‘American Idol’?

paige miles

This is a big week for the contestants and that may have played into how poorly most of them did Tuesday. The top 10 make it on tour and get a significant pay day.

Who will miss out? Paige Miles. She was widely panned for one of the worst performances in “Idol” history at this point so nobody is surprised by the result. Overall, she had a passable voice but didn’t connect well with most of the songs and had poor stage presence. In other words, she will join Lacey Brown in the “we won’t remember her in two weeks” category.

The other two in the bottom three included Tim Urban, who we all predicted would be there after a very robotic “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” He won’t be around long.

Paige Miles going home

  • No complaints here!
  • No! Tim should have gone home
  • No! Andrew should have gone home
  • No! Somebody else should have gone home

Despite lousy evening, ‘Idol’ ratings pretty good; Paula Abdul’s latest possible TV project

Maybe she'll ditch the guitar next week and do the Moon Walk!

Maybe she’ll ditch the guitar next week and do the Moon Walk!

Despite some of the grand awfulness we heard last night, “American Idol” drew 23.8 million viewers, based on preliminary numbers. It might end up being closer to 24 million when all is said and done so it’s going to be a photo finish between “Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars” this week. (DWTS opened with a series debut high of 23.9 million Monday.)

“Idol” is still far ahead of DWTS among 18 to 49 year olds but it’s incredible to think “Idol” NOT being No. 1 on the charts.

And it’s actually ahead of the top 11 performance show a year ago which drew 21.89 million (but less than the 26.1 million on the comparable date a year ago.)

-Last night confirmed to me that this is the weakest overall top 11 since season 3 and possibly the dullest crew, too. Season six was pretty weak, too, but at least we had Sanjaya to kick around for much longer than he deserved. Simon Cowell, I’m sure, cannot WAIT to leave this joint and …

The show should have stuck with “teen idols.” We might have been more entertained than this overly broad “Billboard Number Ones” theme.

Overall, this night was uninspired at best. I only truly enjoyed Crystal Bowersox as usual. A few folks were okay – Casey, Michael, Lee, Katie. Everybody else left me in the cold – with no coat.

Who will go home? This might be the easiest one we’ve had so far: Paige Miles. The poor gal is lost. She was singing in the dark there. Who else will join her in the bottom? Andrew Garcia clearly got no love. And Tim Urban will only be saved by his tween fans. He should be in the bottom three, though.

My rankings: 1. Crystal 2. Michael 3. Lee 4. Katie 5. Siobhan 6. Casey 7. Didi …

‘Idol’ bits about Tamyra Gray, Paula Abdul, Anoop Desai, Carrie Underwood

Good news for former Norcross resident and season one contestant Tamyra Gray: she’s pregnant!

Entertainment Weekly spoke to her.

Idol is a piece of cake compared to this,” says Gray, breaking the news exclusively to EW. It’s been a tough first trimester, but Gray is nonetheless excited to be expecting her first child with music producer husband (and former Color Me Badd member) Sam Watters.

- Paula Abdul was in town recently to shoot her third recurring guest role as a dream judge for Lifetime’s “Drop Dead Diva” in Peachtree City. The publicist, though, said the set this time was only available to select national press. I wasn’t important enough to merit a visit this time.

Idol magazine-Although it’s over for “Idol Tonight” on TV Guide Channel and whatever “Idol” show was on Fox Reality Channel (which is going away soon), “Idol” is bringing back its “American Idol” magazine after three years’ absence. It hits newsstands Friday. Do we really need an “Idol” magazine with everything already …

Miley Cyrus mentors the top 11; Joe Jonas is back to perform Wednesday

I know most of you are already doubled over in pain and possibly gagging from the news in the headline above but yes, Miley Cyrus is the mentor for the top 11.

I’m sure Crystal Bowersox will learn oodles from Miley, eh? And faint when she sees her! Seriously, Miley has had a successful teen career so far with No. 1 albums, a few hit singles (”Party in the USA,” “The Climb”), movies and big-time TV show on Disney “Hannah Montana.” For a 17 year old, she’s had a pretty impressive run so far.

But can she mentor? I have no clue. Perhaps she can teach them about stagecraft because a lot of them clearly are not yet up to speed on that front.

So even though the theme was changed from “teen idols” to Billboard No. 1’s, the concept of teen idols remains because on Wednesday, the Disney dynamos Cyrus, Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato will be performing.

This is clearly a desperate attempt to draw back the teens and 18-34 year olds that have been leaving the show in droves the past couple of …

Is Atlanta’s Usher the ‘Idol’ mentor for the top 10?

“American Idol” may trying to keep this week’s mentor a secret but it looks like we know who will be mentoring for the top 10: Atlanta’s own R&B star Usher. Conveniently, he has a new album out that same day called “Raymond v Raymond.” (Raymond being Usher’s last name that we seldom hear.)

Usher’s Web site lists his busy schedule which is listed as follows:

3/29 Good Morning America Live Interview
3/29 Late Show with David Letterman performance
3/30 Good Morning America live performance
3/30 American Idol appearance
3/31 American Idol live performance
4/1 Ellen DeGeneres live performance
4/1 Lopez Tonight live performance & interview
4/2 CBS Early Show interview & performance

Usher’s has his fair share hits though only a few are iconic to a broader audience such as “You Make Me Wanna,” “Yeah!” “Burn,” and “Confessions Part II.”

Idol theme changed to Billboard No. 1’s from teen idols

“American Idol” dumped its “teen idols” theme it announced last week and has gone with the more generic and open-ended Billboard No. 1’s. It’s a theme they did a few years back and had the Idols visit Fred Bronson, a Billboard magazine chart guru I’ve known for many years.

MJ confirmed with Fred that the theme was changed. I just emailed him myself to ask why. He said he didn’t know and didn’t ask. But he is a big “Idol’ fan like we are and was thrilled enough to just be back on the show.

Are you going to miss “Teen Idols” or prefer giving the Idol contestants such an open selection of songs?

I do love Billboard magazine. I grew up reading it religiously and tracking the charts. There are hundreds of No. 1 songs to choose from so this should be a good challenge when it comes to song choice.

Nigel Lythgoe gives up on Paula Abdul coming on SYTYCD

Paula Abdul sure is playing hard to get. I saw this item the same week she rejected “Star Search.” Nigel Lythgoe talked to the New York Post and said he has given up getting Paula on the show. She won’t do it, much to his exasperation.

PW: Will you continue to try and woo Paula Abdul onto the show?

Nigel: No. I spent an entire season wooing her and if she was ever going to do it, she would have. The timing was perfect for her and I was rather shocked she didn’t pick up and join us at any point. I mean, Katie Holmes was there, Jennifer Lopez was there. I know we don’t have “Idol” money and so does Paula, but at the end of the day I do plenty of things for no money because I want to support dance. And as an dancer/performer/choreographer, I would have thought she’d like to support us.

- Norman Gentile tells it like it is on Wendy Williams. You make top 10, you get $100,000 (plus!) and a job until September because of the tour. For those like him who didn’t make it, “you get a …
