The lamest top 10 ever?

The print edition of the AJC wanted a story about “Idol” for the top 10. So here was my take:

Fox’s top reality show “American Idol” is struggling to maintain its footing as it muddles through middle age.

Ratings in its ninth season have slipped again. Fans are complaining about the lack of depth in this year’s lackluster top 10. Simon Cowell seemed especially peeved after last week’s poor showing by virtually all the contestants.

This top 10 is arguably the weakest since season six, which at least had Blake Lewis’s beat boxing and Sanjaya’s hair to distract us. Maybe the contestants can redeem themselves working with Atlanta R&B star Usher, tonight’s guest mentor.

Let’s review the top 10, from worst to best:

10. Tim Urban: Inserted as a substitute in the top 24, Urban sang a heartfelt version of “Hallelujah” one week but otherwise seems incapable of connecting with the songs he chooses.

9. Andrew Garcia: After an intriguing version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” Hollywood Week, this bespectacled guitar man has proven to be a pure one-note act with limited range.

8. Katie Stevens: At age 16, she’s a bit of  a blank slate who seems more comfortable singing old classics for the nursing-home set than channeling anything remotely current.

7. Aaron Kelly: Another teen, Aaron is a lower-grade version of season seven’s runner-up David Archuleta. But he always gets an A for effort.

6. Casey James: So laid back, it’s almost like he isn’t trying at times. But his easy-going vibe and Teen Beat hot looks will keep the votes comng in for awhile.

5. Didi Benami: Her quivering, cutesy voice melds well with her quirky persona. She’s has “coffeehouse singer-songwriter” imprinted on her forehead.

4. Lee DeWyze: His on-stage charisma remains at low wattage, but he possesses an appealing modern rock voice and has plenty of room to improve, which voters tend to like.

3. Michael Lynche: This year’s velvet teddy bear, he evokes a bit of season two’s Ruben Studdard though critics find some of his affectations a bit on the Velveeta side.

2. Siobhan Magnus: Her weekly “scream” may torture your family dog, but her vocal flexibility and sweetly likable sensibility makes her a solid bet for the finale.

1. Crystal Bowersox: She may resemble those ratty guitarist subway dwellers plying for dollar bills. But she’s also the only contestant who seems ready to cut an album now as a fully-formed recording artist.

Judging the judges:

Simon Cowell: As a lame duck, he appears disgruntled and disengaged at times. But bottom line: he remain the arbiter of tough love and truth. That will be difficult to replace.

Ellen DeGeneres: She’s no music expert and it shows. Her sense of humor remains her saving grace, even if her quips are far more calculating than predecssor Paula Abdul’s often inadvertently strange commentary.

Kara DioGuardi: In year two, the outsider has become an insider, coming into her own as a judge. Her over-the-top hunger for Casey James has been a wee uncomfortable, but she brings genuine passion to the table.

Randy Jackson: Yo, dawg, you say the same six things over and over again. But there’s something oddly comfortable about your utter predictability, especially since you’ll be the last remaining original judge next year.

From todat’s WSJ:

“‘American Idol’: Real Worth? The Answer for CKX Is, Less Than the TV Show Was Worth 2 Years Ago

“One Equity Partners, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.’s private-equity arm, is nearing a deal to buy out CKX Inc., the owner of the blockbuster television enterprise ‘American Idol’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ for roughly $6 a share, according to people familiar with the matter. Robert F.X. Sillerman, chief executive of CKX, would retain his roughlly 20,6% stake as part of the proposed deal.

“Mr. Sillerman and other insiders offered $13.75 a share for CKX in 2007, a deal scuttled by the credit crisis.

“Back then, the company’s stock hovered in the midteens. But the past two years haven’t inspired investors’ confidence in CKX. Earlier this year, Simon Fuller, the creator of American Idol, left CKX.”

“One issue for the company (CKX) is that it is costly to keep the talent happy. The company, for example, recently paid Ryan Seacrest $15 million to retain him for future projects and to market his name and image, according to analysts.”

Interesting take on talent…

Remember – this is the idiot that gave us THE song for last year’s winner to perform after winning. What song was it? It was so bad NO radio gave it play time. Get rid of Kara and Idol has a chance.

Life is like the sea, “an eternal, moving thing” that changes with time, takes shape first one way, and then the other. WHY ARE THERE 4 JUDGES? It totally slows the show down. No performance can ellicit four different points of view, so all we get is repeitive blather.

KARA IS THE WORST. I believe she probably knows what she is talking about, but her comments are predictable and way too long-winded, especially given the 4-judge format. OK, we get it, they need to “make the song their own”. fine. NEXT! The funny thing is, that Kara is actually a very attractive women, but it just takes 5 minutes of her talking to make me completely lose any affection for her.

Idol “jumped the shark” when it added Kara. I imagine Simon will come out and say this in a couple of years.

my thoughts precisely. the show is becoming indulgent(in simon’s own words). ellen was the worst pick for a new judge, she is clueless everytime ryan asks her anything, other than a joke. didni’t get her on the show.

the contestants, have no personality. maybe it will improve. the top 24 was better than the top 10, but they were sleepy. the show should have kept the dancing guy toderick.

I get that we’ve all b!tched and moaned about the judges (commentators, hey, Linny!), but unfortunately, it’s what we are stuck with now. I actually don’t think Kara is the worst judge, as her comments seem better than Mr. Catchprase…I do like Randy, but at this point he’s like the old blankie you don’t get rid of ’cause it’s comfortable. I just wish he had more to say that “pitchy.” 8O

2 hours!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Remember when they could fit the top 10 into one hour? Heck even during the top 24 phase where they had 10 men or 10 women a night those shows were only an hour!

Idol: first you put together the most lame, mediocre, and boring group of contestants and then you run 10 singers through 2 hours?

Now is when I start griping about the four judges, I do have to side with K&Cfan. Kara has been bugging me, but at least there are occasions where I will agree/disagree with her. I don’t mind disagreeing with her, that means that she is at least saying something. Randy doesn’t say anything to agree/disagree with.

“E what do you think?” Is about the best new thing Randy has said in three years. Boot Randy and give us back a one hour top 10 show. Give us back two songs per contestant from the top 5 on!

Two words to describe this season – bo ring!

My take on the pathetically weak top 10.

10. Tim Urban: no talent, but will continue to garner votes from little girls because he’s “cute”.

9. Andrew Garcia: his look (tattoos and Sally Jessie Raphael glasses) is all wrong as are his vocal chops, but he’s the only Hispanic in the competition so he’ll probably stick around a few more weeks.

8. Katie Stevens: may be the best voice for her local high school, but her talent is very thin on a national scale. Will continue to win votes from the young texting crowd..

7. Aaron Kelly: I don’t get the love for this kid. He’s not even close to David Archuleta in terms of talent. His warbling voice sends cold chills down my spine. But like Katie, the young texting crowd will continue to move him along for a few more weeks.

6. Casey James: Would be great in a cover band, or in a band as lead guitarist. The “Kara has the hots for him” has become waaaaaaay too old.

5. Didi Benami: Unique? Yes. Extremely talented? No. May make the top 6 but wouldn’t bet on it. I just don’t think she has a huge fan base. The young texting crowd may not connect with her.

4. Lee DeWyze: I have yet to hear this guy sing on tune through an entire song. Cover bands throughout the country have better singers.

3. Michael Lynche: Good voice, smiles a lot. Ho hum. Has a newborn daughter….so do several people I know. Will be in top 5 but won’t do much when his album is released.

2. Siobhan Magnus: Biggest enigma of the bunch. Just what style of music would she record and what radio station format would play this style? She may want to tone down the “wanted my hair cut in a mohawk once in my life” clips if she truly wants to win. May be a little too over the top for the masses (i.e. Adam Lambert).

1. Crystal Bowersox: The makeup people have smoothed her “hygiene deficient meth queen” look. Very talented but aloof. Was probably one of those musical “purists” who trashed AI for years, but the chance for big money caused her to compromise.

Judging the judges:

Simon Cowell: Has to be laughing all the way to the bank. This guy makes what, $50 million per year? It’s his last year and he helped stack the deck with the weakest group of competitors yet. Ratings will continue to drop, thus paving the way for the introduction of his new talent show. If nothing else, Simon in shrewd.

Ellen DeGeneres: Has as much business being on this show as I do commanding a space shuttle mission. So she likes music. Big deal, so do I and millions of other Americans.

Kara DioGuardi: Is way too full of herself. We’ll see how valuable she is when the show struggles to survive next year with Simon’s absence..

Randy Jackson: Really adds nothing other than “pitchy”, but he’s like that comfortable pair of jeans that feel juuuuuuust right. Hope he’s banked his money because next year the show will suffer big.

I also believe AI is in decline. They now seem to be in a politically correct mode with every race, creed, sexual orientation (Ellen), et al, being represented rather than focusing on music.

Here’s something that would make things interesting, even if just for a week. On a given show, maybe the top 6 or so, have each contestant sing the same song. Each contestant would be given the choice of singing the song in its original arrangement or change it to their liking. I think it would be great. Try to imagine Katie, Aaron, or Michael singing “Paint it Black” by the Stones. Hilarious.

JTesla

March 30th, 2010

Two hours equals 12 minutes per contestant. You know they aren’t going to be singing 12 minute songs. We’ll get 30 minutes of songs and 90 minutes of JUNK! And that’s being generous considering the group we have now.

That’s it. I’ll read the blog opinions and FF to the ones I’m interested in. Which means I’ll probably watch Andrew and Tim for train wreck reasons, Siobhan because I like her, Didi because she is easy on the eyes, and that’s it. The rest I’ll cover by watching the recap.

Now, Sticking to the Topic,

I am sure Michael will be right in his comfort zone and ought to be one of the best tonight if not the best. Siobhan is way overrated IMO I haven’t been impressed with anything she has done yet, it’s like people are just clinging to the idea of her and her supposed yet seemingly contrived quirkiness. Maybe I’m missing the big picture, but I am NOT AT ALL impressed with any of the vocalists on this years AI except for Crystal Bowersox. There had to be some other contestants that were better than the ones that were selected to be on the show (Top 24). If not, then this should be the last year for AI.

I totally agree with Rodney’s assessment of Ellen on the show as a judge. She has absolutely zero credibility as a judge on the show when it comes to experience in the music industry.

eagle, the spoiler lists do not show up until after the dress rehearsal which should be about 6 pm edt.

Rodney posted the list that the Idols must choose from in a previous blog titled R & B Songs Idol Contestants Can Choose From…or something like that. Look on the right side up near the top and click on the appropriate title.

‘pizza…I still like American Idol. Good singers or bad singers, the show is still a hoot to me.

Two guys, two girls in the final four. That might make it worth watching. When this is over, I think I’m going to jump ship with Simon and watch his other show. “Sorry.”

I wonder how the summer tour is going to sell out – how many cities won’t sell and how many will??

Yo Dawg,
Your critics are a little “pitchy” to me. Come on, try to be more original…

I like ellen, just not on Idol. She’s clearly uncomfortable judging and that make’s me uncomfortable. That said, this years idol has been like nails on a chalkboard. There’s a couple of people on the show that can sing Michael and Chrystal will be in the finals. God help us getting there!

Deirdre, I guess I’m more with you than with my “I don’t know if I can take it” rant. The show is still a hoot, I even enjoyed the laughably bad that was last week. It was entertaining. My problem is that I just don’t want to keep doing three hours a week. I know that I don’t have a life, I’ve been told so many times, but I still don’t want to spend two hours watching thirty minutes of singing.

JT.. If it wasn’t for this blog, especially the insta-blog on Tuesdays, I’d just record Idol and FFW all the nonsense, including Kris’s nasal Ford ads.

I love Idol, I still do. But I feel like it went from being out on a hot date to dinner with the family.

I’m with Mercedes, if it weren’t for coveritlive, I probably would record it and watch it later.

k&cfan… how about breakfast with the family, on a weekday – everybody is tired, no one cares to make a fancy dish from scratch, like pancakes or waffles, so people just reach for the cornflakes and milk…and discover the milk is off.

It’s all about ratings. Idol still gets them, everyone makes tons of money and the producers are happy.
