R&B songs ‘Idol’ contestants can choose from next week, Ryan Seacrest on ‘Oprah’ Friday

R&B is the theme next week with Atlanta’s own Usher as the guest mentor.. iTunes gave us the complete list of songs the “Idols” can choose from. (In the past, the “Idol” contestants could go off the menu in hopes of getting a song cleared but it’s a risk. I’m not sure how much they can do that this year.)

Some of the songs have been overdone by “Idols” in the past. I’d say avoid any of the Aretha songs, for example. And I don’t think it’d be wise to repeat “Grapevine” after Andrew Garcia just did it last week. Ditto with “Superstition” and Siobhan.

Interesting list of songs, there is more on there that I like than I would have thought with just the R&B theme.

Georgia On My Mind – Ray Charles
Papa Was a Rolling Stone – The Temptations

Oh yeh, these would be great ones.

Mustang Sally – Wilson Pickett

As many times as Tatiana del Toro sang it last season… “The Greatest Love of All” should be avoided at all costs!!

I hope these young singers stick to newer songs..dont touch these old songs that have been touched so many times year in and year out please….for the sake of us all!

I’ll bet $7 that Crystal chooses “Midnight Train to Georgia – Gladys Knight and the Pips”. Unless she goes back and sings “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman – Aretha Franklin” again. She actually did a pretty good version in Holywood week but she’l lose points with me for doing a song again.

If we are making requests I hope Tim does “Umbrella” by Rihanna. He’d get my vote, I’d be a voting fool!

WHA??? No Teddy Pendergrass??? Where’s “Turn Off the Lights” or “Love TKO”??? C’mon!

Maybe Teddy didn’t approve his songs for Idol.

This is great! Have they EVER given us the list before? All sorts of speculation can come from this list!

Other than Big Mike, I don’t think any of the guys has the ability to pull off any of these songs.

Not many of the girls either.

Yeh, Big Mike should just get an auto safe pass for this week.

Sooooo…I’m gonna go ahead and compile my list of $ongs I Do NOT Want to Hear Next Week (which only means I probably will): In addition to any Aretha, I will add: Let’s Stay Together, No One, Ain’t No Mountain, September, Midnight Train to Georgia, I Want You Back, Daoncing In The Streets, Tracks of My Tears, Superstition, People Get Ready, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, and Papa Was a Rolling Stone.

If anyone does On The Wings of Love, I will probably have an asthma attack laughing $o hard. Come on, Tim, you know you want to!

Big Mike to sing “Back at One – Brian McKnight”

Seriously, not a Joke suggestion:
Aaron Carter – You’ve got it bad by Usher, I’d love to hear it
Shiobohan – Greatest love of all by Whitney, let’s see if you’ve really got the chops you’ve been hinting at.
Tim does “Umbrella” by Rihanna – Seriously, I agree
Andrew – My perogative Britney style? – yeah I’m thinking something in his “straight up” style is coming this week

Realistic suggestions:
Katie Stevens – No one by Alicia Keys – she dominated this song in Hollywood
Crystal – Dancing in the streets, Greatful dead type arrangement
Mike – Soul Man Sam & Dave- Pull this off and i’ll be a fan
Casey – Mustang sally – has about the right ratio of guitar opportunity and chance to put some rock edge into his vocal without looking poorly in comparison with the original.
Lee – Any of the easy and safe ones, because he’s way overmatched in this category
Didi – one of the Supremes songs I guess

Clay Aiken sang “On the Wings of Love.”. We can only hope Aaron Kelly tackles it, too.

“Tim does “Umbrella” by Rihanna – Seriously, I agree”

If he comes out in ballet shoes with an umbrella I’d vote for him every Tuesday night for the rest of the competition.

Crystal – Waterfalls
Siobahn – We Don’t Need Another Hero
Aaron – With You
Tim – (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay
Lee – Stand by Me
Didi- Save the Best for Last
Andrew – Dancing in the Street
Katie – Human Nature
Mike – Georgia On My Mind

Yeah, if Mike “slayed” Georgia on my mind, that might be an all-timer performance. This is his week to really put himself into contention or establish that he’s just part of the crowd. Honestly, we should know as soon as we see the performance order. If he’s got the pimp spot, stay tuned for something great.

i’d have to shank somebody if they choose “Who’s Lovin’ You” by the Jackson 5 and mangle it, lol. as yet, no one i’ve seen so far has the kind of organic soul, emotion or range to do that one justice. but hey, hasn’t stopped them from fubarring most of the songs this season, so we shall see. mj sang the hell out of that song at, what, age 9 or 10, so if it’s picked the singer best come correct. i think it’ll be another night of retreads, the tried and true songs we’ve heard a gazillion times already on the show. my expectations are low that any will or can have the guts to really pick something current and burn the house down.

Michael Slezak of EW wrote a hilarious recap of last night:,,20312226_20354530_4,00.html

That Idoltini sounds just about right…

Neg’s song choice recommendations:

1. Crystal: Heat Wave (Linda Ronstadt version). She would belt this one out of the park.
2. Michael: Let’s Stay Together (Al Green). Holy crap would he slay this one.
3. Siobhan: Un-break My Heart (Toni Braxton). Big, huge emotional song. She could do very well with it (sans screech).
4. Casey: Soul Man (Lee & Dave). Perfect pitch for his vocal wheelhouse. Option to play the guitar, too.
5. Lee: Set Me Free (Vanilla Fudge version)). Lee needs to just rock one out.
6. Didi: Midnight Train to Georgia (Gladys Night/Pips). She needs to get back to her indie roots, and this song is just the ticket to make that happen.
7. Aaron: Everytime I Close My Eyes (Babyface). Has Archie 2.0 written all over it.
8. Katie: Sweet Love (Anita Baker). Should be perfect for her range.
9. Tim: On the Wings of Love (Jeffrey Osbourne). This should be about right for his style and voice.
10.: Andrew: Back At One (Brian McKnight). Andrew’s one good key is the perfect key for this song.

I just had to bring this over here from the last thread.

Carpet? If that bothers you then you wouldnt like a great deal of bands that are out there right now. Tom Petty, Allman Brothers Band, Government Mule, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Zac Brown Band, Carrie Underwood, Aerosmith, Dave Matthews, I could go on and on. They all have used these oriental type rugs on stage. I think it’s pretty cool. Anyway I’m not looking at whats under a performers feet for talent but I do listen to what is coming out of their mouths and instruments and when you take that into account Crystal is the best in this years group.

I love Usher and can’t wait to see him mentor these kids. He’s current and relative. Plus he has amazing vocals and dance moves. This will be one of the better weeks since it’s R&B. I look for stiffer competition as each contestant brings more game.

Negativo – I remember that Vanilla Fudge version! My 74 year old dad still has that entire album on vinyl and plays it on his “record player” periodically! Too funny that you should bring them up.

I would like to hear Big Mike rock “What You See Is What You Get” — he could utilize his lower range and dazzle em with that crazy falsetto — and it would be a nice tribute to Dramatics leader Ron Banks, who died a few weeks ago.
Aaron-”Easy” or “Sittin on the Dock…”
Katie-”Angel of Mine”
Andrew-”Could it Be I’m Fallin in Love” or “Never Too Much”
Casey-”Human Nature”
Siobhan-”Be Without You” or “We Belong Together” (scream opportunities at the end of both)
Lee-”It’s Alright”
Didi-”Try Again” or “Cruisin”
Tim-”Rock With You” or “Treat Her Like a Lady”

I really hope that next week there is not any (Sittin’ on) The dock of the bay, Georgia on my mind, Stand by me, or other overplayed song. Sure, they are great songs, which is why they still get played regularly and have for the last 40+ years, but we don’t need to hear them again. In some cases we don’t need to hear them again and again on Idol.

Something different please, something that doesn’t cause everyone to compare you to the original, or to Idol contestant X.

JT, I “soooooo” agree with you. Come on, there are songs on the list that haven’t been done on Idol. They need to do their homework and choose accordingly.

KPH, you can add Kelly. She also used a carpet during the Independent Tour. (The one she co-headlined with Clay.)

oldfart – I think that’s what alot of people don’t realize about the show. These contestants every week are told to “choose a great song” but don’t have nearly as wide a selection choice as the judges imply. Sometimes they even run into issues like 2 people choosing the same song or a song they thought would clear not clearing.

I love R&B this should be a good week.

Yep K&C fan I listen to a lot of jam bands and they all do the persian rug thing. I have noticed more and more artist doing it. Heck I even have one in the room where I have my karaoke machine set up LOL! I think it also helps with covering the cables and wires that are used on stage. It’s a very common thing these days. :-)

Teddy died just over 2 months ago. Maybe they didnt want to hear him roll over in his grave if Andrew, Tim, Aaron or Casey attempted one of his songs. Ugh, so glad that won’t happen. Eitehr of these guys singing, not Teddy rolling.
