The show should have stuck with “teen idols.” We might have been more entertained than this overly broad “Billboard Number Ones” theme.
Overall, this night was uninspired at best. I only truly enjoyed Crystal Bowersox as usual. A few folks were okay – Casey, Michael, Lee, Katie. Everybody else left me in the cold – with no coat.
Who will go home? This might be the easiest one we’ve had so far: Paige Miles. The poor gal is lost. She was singing in the dark there. Who else will join her in the bottom? Andrew Garcia clearly got no love. And Tim Urban will only be saved by his tween fans. He should be in the bottom three, though.
My rankings: 1. Crystal 2. Michael 3. Lee 4. Katie 5. Siobhan 6. Casey 7. Didi 8. Andrew 9. Aaron 10. Tim 11. Paige
As for Miley Cyrus as a mentor, she lacked the weight of say, a Dolly Parton or Barry Manilow by dint of her age. But she was sweet and provided a few decent observations. In other words, based on very low expectations, she met them.
First up: Lee DeWyze (”The Letter” The Box Tops) – He tries to move around the stage but he’s still a bit stiff. Vocally, I enjoyed the jazzy feel.
Randy: You knocked it out of the box.
Ellen: You have a favorite pen blah blah blah. Then it runs out of ink… my favorite pen is back.
Kara: The progress is tremendous. Believe that you’re good.
Simon: That to me was not a recording performance. That was you doing something quite corny.
Second up: Paige Miles (”Against All Odds” – Phil Collins) – She’s all over the place. There is barely a note in the right place. Maybe she should get laryngitis again.
Randy: That was honestly terrible.
Ellen: Let’s look at the positive. You didn’t fall down [with those high heels.]
Kara: It was the worst vocal I’ve ever heard from you and possibly for the season.
Simon: You’re going to be in serious serious trouble. It’s like you stopped competing, as Kara said, and stopped believing in yourself. You were so good weeks ago.
Third up: Tim Urban (”Crazy Little Thing Called Love” Police) – He clearly was told to use the stage. And he tries. But it comes off as synthetic. He is trying so hard to be engaging, he forgot to give a good vocal.
Randy: The dopest thing you did was the slide. The vocals were so boring. It was like bad karaoke.
Ellen: You have huge fans. It felt like an audition for “High School Musical.”
Kara: Little girls will love that. You took the song and didn’t do much with it.
Simon: The problem is that it was completely and utterly pointless and silly. You have zero chance of winning.
Fourth up: Aaron Kelly (”I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” Aerosmith) – I abhor this song and here it comes rearing its ugly head again. He simply lacks the vocal power to pull off this song, even with his illness.
Randy: It wasn’t a perfect performance. Thank God you came on the stage and started singing because the two before you. I’m a fan.
Ellen: You’re always pitch perfect. And you’re like in third grade… that was amazing.
Kara: Best song choice of the night. It accentuates the strength in your voice.
Simon: You’re making yourself old fashioned.
Fifth up: Crystal Bowersox (”Me and Bobby McGee” Janis Joplin) – Phew! She is so professional, so self assured. Sure, this was the most obvious song ever for Crystal but she did just fine.
Randy: That’s what’s called being a star.
Ellen: I was driving the other day and this song came on the radio. You’re singing that today. Nothing wrong with that performance… the only thing we’re missing is personality. A little something between the audience and you.
Kara: I did feel more. I saw you smiling. I think too would you ever consider putting the guitar down? ["I have big plans for next week," she said.]
Simon: I wouldn’t change anything.
Sixth up: Michael Lynche (”When a Man Loves a Woman” – Percy Sledge) – He isn’t quite as smooth as Ruben Studdard and he overdoes the runs, but he has proven himself a top 5 finalist for sure.
Randy: You know who you are.
Ellen: It was a safe choice. It’s like driving the speed limit.
Kara: I love you. Technically, it was really good but I felt it was a bit boring and loungy at times. Overindulgent and too many riffs.
Simon: You want one scoop of ice cream and you end up with 11.
Seventh up: Andrew Garcia (”I Heard It Through the Gravepvine” Marvin Gaye) – I may be the only person who found this tolerable. it sure beats the crap he’s been shoveling at us the past few weeks. And Miley actually gave some advice that was worth taking: ditch the guitar for once.
Randy: It wasn’t good man. This is not the kind of vocalist you are.
Ellen: That was enough to get a lot of people on board.
Kara: You’re chasing that moment. You don’t know what to do up there.
Simon: Maybe we overrated that moment in hindsight (”Straight Up”) The arrangement was horrific. You sucked the soul out of that song and tortured it.
Eighth up: Katie Stevens (”Big Girls Don’t Cry” Fergie) – She goes more current and starts up fairly spot on with Fergie’s version. She misses some notes throughout the song but I did see glimmers of home.
Randy: You picked a younger song. At least you’re listening.
Ellen: I think it was your best performance so far. I think it sounded great.
Kara: This is the lane for you. Pop with R&B leanings. You moved like you felt the song.
Simon: The way you look tonight compared to the pageant horror outfit we saw a few weeks ago is better. Are you believable in this area? I’m not sure.
Ninth up: Casey James (”The Power of Love” Huey Lewis & the News) – He did a surprisingly good job on a cheesy pop song though he didn’t do anything extra with it. I also didn’t like the overuse of horns.
Randy: You did it well. I believed it.
Ellen: Not a fan of the song choice but it was the best vocal of the night. (No “Back to the Future” jokes?)
Kara: It’s all there. You’re in the zone. Stay in it.
Simon: I don’t know what you’re listening to Kara. That song was old fashioned 25 years ago. He did an identical version. It was like watching an 80s cover band. No originality.
Tenth up: Didi Benami (”It’s No Good” Linda Ronstadt) – She was pretty sexy and did okay. I found it enjoyable but she’s still a lesser version of Brooke White.
Randy: I loved the idea of it. Just the pitches…
Ellen: I don’t get the song choices tonight. I do love your voice.
Kara: I felt like you were playing a character. It didn’t feel like you.
Simon: Irony screeching ‘You’re no good.’ It was like a musical. The bad part of the musical.
Pimp spot! Siobhan Magnus (”Superstition” Stevie Wonder) – I wasn’t a big fan of this. She kept grinning like a silly person throughout the tune and then there was that ignominious screech at the end – again.
Ellen: To quote Oliver, “More please!’
Kara: You express yourself every time you’re on stage. That end note-how do you say that’s not amazing (That’s not amazing.)
Simon: This singing with the screaming at the end. Maybe next time start then go softer. I don’t think you hit the notes as near as you’ve done before. Tell contestants-you’ve got to start pushing yourself and finding better songs. Start making yourself relevant. Tonight, this was not a good night.
The polling tonight: for the first time, we had a unanimous decision. Paige Miles sucked so bad nobody even felt sympathy enough to give her a “good, not voting” vote. But Andrew and Tim were not far behind.
Top top 11 ranked on who has the highest percentage of “voting for sure”
Crystal: 54% voting for sure, 40% good, not voting; 7% go home!
Siobhan 36, 29, 36
Michael: 20, 70, 10
Katie, 19, 38, 44
Casey: 18, 73, 9
Lee: 8, 75, 17
Aaron: 8, 58, 33
Didi: 7, 60, 33
Tim: 0, 14, 86
Andrew 0, 8, 92
Paige: 0, 0, 100
And bonus question: Who do you prefer? Michael Lynche: 43%; Ruben Studdard: 57%

First time watching the show this year, tho I’ve read reviews. And it will be the last. Where are the stars? There wasn’t one performance that made me want to hear more. Off-pitch, no stage presence, no believability. A couple of good moments, but overall, horrible. I’d take the Republicans stance on this: send ‘em all home and start over.

You are spot on Rodney. Crystal and then everyone else. I agree that the tweens will save Tim Urban. You have to give Tim credit, he has taken an opportunity and ran with it. Looks like he will be going on tour, which I am sure was just a dream when he didn’t originally make the top 24.

My man Lee brought it!
Siobhan socked it out of the park but needs to watch overdoing the quirkiness, and
what’s so great about Crystal? She strikes me as mannered and anemic.

Maybe the expectations were so low but Miley did a good job. She didn’t try to be a vocal coach but instead tried to give them confidence.

If Rosita is out there, this is the first time that I didn’t think Lee stunk.
About the only performances I even remember is Crystal, Shibonbon, and Didi.
I thought the judges were way over the top rough on Didi. And for really no reason, I pretty much disagreed with everything they said about her performance.
1. Crystal – despite the cliche of singing Janis.
2. Shibonbon – to watch her go from dork to stage goddess is comparable to watching Clark Kent become Superman. She really does have to watch the screaming notes. They aren’t mandatory. She has to be artistic when she uses that power and that will be her ticket to win this contest.
3. Didi – she has come a long way. She seemed comfortable, playful, sexy. I thought it was great.
4-9 Everyone else except
10 Drew – Strangest contestant of the year. I just don’t know what happened, it’s got to be mental.
11. Paige – That sucked

The band had fun tonight. I like it when the contestants involve them in the performance.
Lee- Still my fave of the guys. He’s getting more comfortable on stage every time.
Paige- Obvious choice to go home. Really bad.
Tim- Performance was a little silly but he wasn’t the worst tonight.
Aaron- I hate this song, don’t think his voice is very strong & he shocked me by actually being better than I expected.
Crystal- Yes, an obvious choice but she was great.
Mike- Good, not fantastic.
Andrew- What happened to the guy I liked early on? He’s not even the same singer. Awful.
Katie- Never would have come up with this song for her but I think she did quite well with it.
Casey- Sounded good but it was kinda boring.
Didi- I liked this. Maybe it helps that I’m not that familiar with the original? Sassy Didi is better on stage than scared Didi.
Siobhan- She’s my favorite but this was probably my least fave of her performances.

1. Crystal, of course
2. Didi — sexy, perfect song choice, great stage presence. Basically, the complete opposite of the judges. Who cares if she put on a “show”? You think if you saw her in concert, she would just stand there?
3.Michael — good, yet safe song choice. Great tone as usual.
4.Showban — sick of the big, off note at the end. Thought it was a terrible song choice — I’ve heard so many better versions.
5.Casey — loved the original song choice…just think he could bring more to a performance.
6.Katie S — good song choice, but not for her. As flat as Glenn Beck’s chalkboard.
7.Lee – eh.
8. Aaron — 90 minutes later, I can’t remember what he sang. I know it was better than the people below, though.
9. Tim – he is what he is. Congrats on not sucking more than the others to make it on tour. I’m sure that the Idol Tour will benefit.
10. Andrew Garcia — I’m just done with him. BORING.
119. Paige – “just a memory of your face” tonight, because you are gone after tomorrow.

People don’t really give Miley Cyrus the credit she deserves but after tonight I have to admit it, she must have been a great mentor because everyone’s performance have had huge improvements. In fact they all sounded more like recording artist for once. For the most part everyone was pretty good. Tim Urban really has redeemed himself tonight because normally he sucks. I’d say only Paige seemed pretty weak.
If you haven’t already make sure you check out their official public opinion polls on Baduku, the Idols can really use all your support and words of advice, especially Siobhan who’s clearly a favorite but isn’t getting the fan support she deserves online. http://www.baduku.com/americanidol9

Neg’s take:
1. Crystal – Amazing job with Bobby McGee. She’s in first by a landslide. Word to Ellen and Kara: shut the F up, she doesn’t need to change a thing, and hopefully she will not listen to your garbage advice.
2. Michael – Shut the F up judges! Not sure how anyone can criticize Big Mike for this. He absolutely nailed When a Man Loves a Woman.
3. Katie: I closed my eyes and thought I heard Fergie. She was fabulous.
4. Didi: Again, Shut the F up judges, she was really, really good. Dripping with hotness, too.
5. Casey: Decent performance of a lame song. Slightly improved on the stage fright. Kara, please Shut the F up with the exaggerated praise.
6. Lee: Decent performance, but not connecting very well with the audience or the song.
7. Tim: Good vocals, and moved around with much more confidence. Double extra points for totally disregarding the judges attack with his smug, dismissive grin. Kara especially had that nasty p-u-s-s, and looked like she was going to come out of her chair when he smirked at her criticism.
8. Aaron: Bad song performed adequately at best. Shut the F up with the excessive praise judges, and props to Ryan for tossing in that sarcastic David Archuletta comment.
9. Andrew: Yet another dismal, boring, forced performance by Andrew.
10. Siobhan: I didn’t think she could be any worse than she was last week, but low and behold she out-stunk herself! Bad song choice, lame vocals, terrible look, and, yes, more idiotic screeching. She could be in trouble soon if she doesn’t get her act together.. Ellen and Kara, Shut the F up.
390. Paige: Do I really need to comment on perhaps the worst vocal in human history? Bu-bye Paige, you shouldn’t have lasted this long.

Paige has a great voice, but she picked horrible outfits. She also picked horrible songs. I could see her singing Randy Crawford, “I got high last night at dance land.” She should have also sang Donna Summer “Last Dance.” She is too lost! She is not an American Idol.

Paige is a better singer than she was tonight. I thought Tim Urban and Garcia were worse than her, only because Tim cannot sing AT ALL, during ANY WEEK of the competition, and Adam Garcia is a self-absorbed, pompous ass who was vastly overrated.
Of those three, Paige *should* stay. Unfortunately, she probably won’t.

I think Crystal has it going on. My daughter doesn’t have any idea who Janis Joplin is, so I made her watch some songs on YouTube. (She didn’t get the whole thing…) Anyway, I love Siobhan and hope she wins it, but I am in agreement with others who would encourage her to not be oblidged to hit the really high note every song. Give that a rest for a while and don’t play the card too often. Going home: Paige. She was really horrible. I could have sung better. Something crazy is going on with her, because she was seriously bad, and it was really painful to listen to her.

My take:
1) Kara and those boots. She’s obviously trying to appeal to me and win me back as a fan.
2) Paige, actually she is #1… #1 worst performance past Hollywood week.
Aaron, I kind of liked it. Maybe I’ll need to stop slamming the kid. Big Mike, he’s Big Mike – he’s no Ruben and that is a good thing.
It’s the top 3 vs. the rest.

Neg, your problem with Katie is that you closed your eyes (though I don’t know how you didn’t hear that she was off-key). The worst issue was that she smirked her way through what ought to be a tender “It’s not you, it’s me” song. Her expressions (and big ol’ grin at the end) totally undermined the lyrics.
But poor Paige sounded worse, far worse.
The two of them, however, were so pitchy. At this stage in the competition, I don’t think there should be consistently off-pitch singers!
Crystal is so *effortlessly* good that I worry about her tenure on the show. She’s great. She almost shouldn’t be there (and I remember people saying that about Adam last year). She’s got little growth potential, because she’s excellent at what she does.
I was really enjoying Siobhan in the beginning and am enjoying her less and less as the weeks go on.
I’m liking Lee and Casey, but they aren’t even playing on Crystal’s playground. I mostly like them because I like that style of music. Okay, also, Casey is yummy (and he kind of reminds me of my first ex-fiance).
Andrew is awful. Aaron is a child playing dressup. Tim has nice hair and bad vocals. I can hear that Mike has a great voice, but it’s just not my style of music–not fond of R&B. Still, he’s way better than most of this year’s crop. Didi is growing on me, although I didn’t like this week’s as much as last week’s.

Judges were indeed way off in their criticism of Didi tonight & are becoming something of a joke lately (and I don’t just mean poor Ellen, whom I love, but sadly remains clueless up there).
Only 3 contestants have a shot: Siobhan, Crystal, & Didi.

Dear boots, two things. 1) I’m the last person to enforce nebulous board rules, but c’mon, this… is American Idol! and 2) The people who will benefit the most from the health care reform are NOT the unemployed, who already have Medicaid or won’t be able to afford the coverage at any price, but the very low wage workers like Wal-Mart clerks or the fast-food workers. In addition, the nonpartisan CBO estimates that this will save quite a bit of $$ over the next 10 years or so.

I don’t really get what people see (hear?) with Didi. Alright, she is very hot but the girl can’t sing. 2. Siobhan but she needs to show off her voice instead of her scream
3. Mike was flawless but too safe. he needs to kick it up.
I can’t really rank 4-10
Lee was just ok and I think he performs awkwardly
Aaron was decent but I bristled at Ryan calling him Archuleta. Not even close for me.
Katie? maybe? She wasn’t awful
Casey – his arrangement was uncreative and repetitive.
Tim – his voice sounded better than usual but yeah that was corny.
Didi – I just don’t like the dated way she stylizes songs
Andrew – a different but fairly odd style tonight
11. Pitchy Paige
Miley was better than I expected but I think she should have told the contestants to look at the camera.

I’m a big Siobhan fan, but tonight was the first time I felt she really didn’t connect with the audience, Could be the weird staging and forcing a nonexistent interplay with the band, but her performance felt forced and for the first time, she really didn’t surprise me. When I saw her outfit and hairdo, I was praying for an 80’s tune, but got “Superstitious” and the look felt off. She still rocks my socks and sang the song perfectly fine, but as Simon would say, she lost a little star power tonight. Of course, we all know she’ll get it back.

Morning!
I guess I’ve been feeling a lot more generous than my fellow blogsters. Maybe it’s the regular blog atmospherre as opposed to the liveblog. I enjoyed last night.
I thought Casey improved a lot. Really liked his Power of Love cover. Sometimes a straight cover works best and this time it did for Casey. Also better, imo, was Katie(although Nutmeg will disagree) I heard pitch issues once or twice, not through the whole song and I thought she did just fine. And Lee was, without a doubt, the best I’ve seen him this season.
Crystal and Siobhan were great as usual. Crystal just flat out nails the song every time. Siobhan is our one and only serious entertainment factor this year. You never know what she’s going to do but she always makes it interesting. Yes, I hope she’ll give up the glory note for a few songs…just to surprise us.
Didi wasn’t nearly as bad as the judges let on. I liked her performance, too. And Michael was in excellent voice but struck me as a little boring
That leaves 4 singers who are not that good, which, to me, is about par for an Idol season. Aaron did a commendable job with his song, so I’ll give him a pass. Tim, Andrew and Paige were terrible last night. Especially Paige who couldn’t have found the right note in that song if someone had put a spotlight on it. Kinda sad cuz she seems like a great girl.

I don’t think I could listen to Miley’s performance last year and take her seriously when she says someone is pitchy!!!
And I just don’t get why people like Siobhan? I thought she wrecked that song – and I like that song….

Dang! I hate when a post doesn’t go thru.
I said that I was having trouble liking Crystal’s performance last night, for the simply reason that she chose a copycat song, note for note. Everybody knows she can do Janis. She did not have anything to prove by doing Janis. It was cliche, imo. She rocked, of course, just like everyone knows she can, but I like her much better when she does her own interpretation.
And, this is not popular, but I have Mike second, for the reason that he convinces me when he sings. He can make me feel as if he’s “been there,” whether or not that is true. And, I think he’s more marketable than Ruben was, personality-wise.

please put us out of our misery now idol. this show reached a nadir last night that is unrecoverable. first of all, how in the hell do you neglect to recognize alex chilton, the box top singer who tragically died last week, when the 1st contestant is singing the song that made him famous, ”the letter”. total, unforgivable fail on ryan seacrest’s part, and just shows the cluelessness of these keystone cop idol producers. they all need to be fired after tonight. the judges, 99.9 percent of the contestants, simon fuller, and everyone connected to this trainwreck, and the stripping away of the last vestiges of dignity and credibility this once great and fun show had.
of all the songs that could have been chosen, these contestants chose some of the most played out, boring ones to torture us with. the judges bear a lot of the brunt for the laughingstock that idol has devolved into. where is the crackle, the spark, the wow, the freaking contestants who can sing, and come with 100 feet of a note.
never seen such a collectively bad group of idol singers in 8 seasons. miley added nothing to this mess. paige was horrible, tim was laughable, andrew was horrific, tired of that chick that has the scream as a gimmick now in every song, crystal was good, but is getting boring, aaron kelly can’t carry david archuleta’s microphone, so please ryan don’t insult the intelligence and the ears of the audience, lee was ok, siobhan was ok. this show is on life support, and i think it’s past time to pull the plug.
oh – good morning everyone!

I don’t get the Crystal and Siobhan love.
Every one of Crystal songs sound the same. Can SOMEONE get her some teeth whitener PLEASE and some soap!!!! Sorry it bothers me.
Siobhan sounds like she has tourette syndrome. STOP ALL THAT SCREAMING!! It’s annoying.
Mike step away from the buffet table. Like his personality, but he’s getting boring.
Didi deserves more credit that the judges give her, but she’s too fragile.
Casey is eye candy. Enjoyed him yesterday.
Lee sounds like he is angry. He’s kind of cute though.
Aaron is out of his league. He’s decent though.
Paige should not have even made it to Hollywood week.
Andrew, What the heck?
Tim, what the heck?
Katie should not have made it out of Hollywood week.
This is the worst year on AI I’ve ever seen. Please bring back 11 of the singers you sent home that really deserved to stay.

Crystal was amazing of course, but I thought Didi was pretty great – looked and sounded fantastic. Siobahn and Casey were both pretty good. Wasn’t crazy about most of the song choices. Thought the Letter by the Boxtops was a good choice as a tribute since the lead singer and influential singer Alex Chilton died last week. Andrew, Paige & Tim Urban were painful to watch. Watching this week confirmed my feelings that the voters made a big mistake getting rid of Lacey Brown last week!

Hey y’all,
First off, cut Rodney some slack! He was on both the coveritlive and the “old” blog at the same time. Not to mention, that in the time it took me to catch up on LOST, he’d posted this recap.
As far as the show goes:
Crystal was good. But I have to agree with Harriett. I just hope she doesn’t get Melinda’d.
Didi – I thought it was entertaining. I don’t get the acting criticism. Come on, like Adam never acted up on stage?! I don’t know that she’s got that “WOW” moment or chops to win it, but I can see her being a viable artist. PS. Boots = win.
Lee was Michael Buble-ish, you know, after his week long bender in Tijuana…or hanging out at the smokey bars with Miley.
Katie was better, but I hate, hate, hate that song, so…
ShakeYourBonBon – What the eff was THAT?! Seriously, I mean, I really want to like her, I do…but her continuing attempt to be the female Glambert just isn’t working for me.
Casey – He made me want to bust out my Back to the Future DVD.
Andrew – I think I’m over him. He started with so much promise, but it just doesn’t feel like he is living up to the bar he set for himself.
Aaron – I love that song, and his version was alright. The girls will probably save him.
Tim – Peter Brady sure has pretty hair…
Paige – She sounded so bad that I can’t say anything, really. It’d be like kicking a wounded puppy. Seriously, though, she had laryngitis last week and sounded better. What’s up with that?
Overall, a big “YAWN!” When are they going to do something different? All these songs are old Idol rethreads. Come on, they make buckets and buckets of money, surely they can pay to get clearance on “new” material?

Morning!
Pleasantly surprised by Miley’s “mentorship”. She does have EXPERIENCE and most of the idols do not. Her take charge voice seemed to encourage the contestants. Andrew, much as I dislike his voice, showed he can perform without a guitar, andmove about without looking uncomfortable or stupid. Voice another matter though. He’s my least favorite of the 11.
Lee was a happy improvement. Such a sadsack at the mentoring session, and then he came alive at the performance. Do like his voice, Rosita.
Paige… oh Paige. Only time she was good was when she was sick.
Tim – all his songs sound like the one he did last night. Mildly hummable, no highs or lows.
Aaron – like Lee, he keeps improving. Kid has a great voice, which maturity can only help.
La Sox – every song sounds the same. I wish Janis Joplin could be erased from her brain. I’d like to hear what she sounds like without that constant “inspiration”.
Mike – good, as always. One of the top five fir sure, possibly top three.
Katie – loved the boots and the outfit. And the girl can sing.
Casey – more, please. Eye candy, yes, but what’s wrong with that?
Didi – that “poor little me” vibe that some men find appealing make most women want to barf.
Sionhan – girl gotta slow down on the scream.Otherwise, she’s the only one who attempts to be a real Idol, with total make-overs. And she interprets a song without going drama queen with it (Didi).

The reason we don’t just cut 5 a week and “get to the finals”, is because the multi week process helps us figure out if we’d really give a rip about supporting Crystal’s career. It’s not just about the first hit single, it’s how will we feel about them in the long run. I see that multiple people are like me and have already gotten tired of seeing her perform. Sure, i’d give a single she put out a listen or two, but I absolutely wouldn’t pay $50 or more to go watch her tour. She’s just not entertaining.
Also, really starting to turn on Siobohan. Not sure she’s got a clue what she would really do on her album or tour. And the fashion sense is hideous.
What we’re trying to find out is if any of them really could carry a tour. Maybe Casey, who’s a potential John Mayer type performer, or Big Mike if he picks back up the fun songs for about half his performances. Didi’s very close, if she gets the right hit songs, I’d pay to see that.

Nutmeg? Crystal is so much better than that, and she can do so much more if she can continue in the vein she was in to begin with. I have dreaded her doing that song. Guess she had to get it out of her system. She needs to believe that we believe, or some of us do. I actually have liked Siobhan best from the beginning, but her scream is getting on my nerves for the same reasons I cited with Crystal–we know she can do it. We know, for goodness’ sake!

Well, another mediocre night in a mediocre season. Not much to get excited about, not much to slit ones wrists over. One shining light, one unmitigated disaster, and a whole mess of MEH in between.
On a good note, however, Miley Cyrus was not the total train wreck I expected. She stayed within her little area of knowledge and did not try to put herself off as something more than she is. I thought her advice, while light, was pretty spot on to be honest. She didn’t sugar coat, and wasn’t afraid to make suggestions.
I still wish they would have stuck with TEEN IDOLS, as the prospect of much carnage, cheese and trainwrecks would have been off the chart.
Anyway, here are my ranking, not that there is much reason to rank this seasons steaming pile of whatever.
1. Crystal Bowersox – Me and Bobby McGee – Did the PINK arrangement of the song, and let’s face it, Crystal is in a totally different league than the rest of these performers. This was a virtuoso performance, and looked like the one star among a group of wannabees.
2. Michael Lynche – When A Man Loves a Woman – I thought this was an absolutely beautiful performance. Awesome? No. Earth-shattering? No. In front of a fire, chilled wine on the table, and your best lady next to you. HELL YES.
3. Siobhan Magnus – Superstition – First half, amazing. Second half, good, but I am with Simon, she did not need the gratuitous scream just before the end. The final note was awesome, but the SCREECH right before ruined an otherwise outstanding performance.
4. Casey James – The Power of Love – Personally, I think Casey just made himself a definite top 5 player with this performance. I thought it was a huge step forward for Casey. Still not sold on the power of his vocals, but the whole package of singing and guitar is working.
5. Lee Dewyze – The Letter – Much improvement for Lee. I thought this was his best performance to date, but still a lot of pitch and nerve issues. He is improving however, and could be the one that comes from the pack to make a top 3 or 4 run this season.
6. Katie Stevens –Big Girls Don’t Cry –This was Katie’s best performance by far, but it also highlighted the limitations in her voice. She has an amazingly beautiful sweet spot in her voice, but her range is almost non-existant. She is one of those middle of the pack that never breaks out contestants.
7. Andrew Garcia – I Heard it Through the Grapevine – This was not bad, but it was also not great. Just like Katie, Andrew did good, but also showcased the limitations of his range and voice.
8. Didi Benami – You’re No Good – I really wanted to love this performance. It had huge potential, and had some really wonderful spots, but in the end Didi’s nerves once again did her in. I love her voice, and am rooting for her, but much like Brooke White she needs to get a hold of her nerves.
9. Tim Urban – Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Ok I know this is ironic in its wording, but how can one totally emasculate Queen? Tim took a great song and turned it into a Boy Band ditty. Tim sang well, but just like last week totally missed the mark.
10. Aaron Kelly – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing – Well if tim Emasculated Queen, Aaron took Aerosmith and turned them into a group of off-key nasally whiney little b*tches. This was a totally torturous disaster from note one. How anyone can like this whiney crybaby singing is beyond me. This was pure out and out rubbish.
11. Paige Miles – Against All Odds – I like Paige, and I think she has a beautiful voice. Unfortunately that voice is shot, and has no hopes of getting better as it needs rest. This was a complete total utter disaster. I hate it for her, but this was just horrible.
Should go – PAIGE. Her voice is toast.
Will go – PAIGE. Her voice is toast and she is too.

This season is starting to lose me. The people who are good are only good when compared to the rest of the trash. Crystal is like a toy car that’s caked in dirt and missing a wheel, well that is pretty good compared to a used Kleenex or a half chewed chunk of grisley chicken.
People keep trying to call the “end” of Idol. Well, it will limp on past the end, but that end won’t be Paula or Simon leaving, the end will be the judges putting forth “talent” like they have this season.
The best: Crystal, who I have to agree with a prior blogger, has the personality of a dead cat. Her sound is early 90’s chick-rock. It’s good bit unoriginal.
Siobhan, again unoriginal, and did she eat paint chips as a kid?
Aaron, might be the one to watch, but we already did this two seasons ago. Big Mike should also get more love than he gets.
The rest, garbage that shouldn’t have made the top 12.

JTe$la best descriptions I’ve read so far ! I fault the judges for the lack of talent this year. I mean really they had thousands of people to choose from and they pick this bunch. I’ve watched since season one and this is the first time that I really (so far) don’t care.

Agree with all of it except that I still see impending greatness in Lee.

Stand by my assessment of Crystal as mannered and anemic. Siobhan self-destructing. Didi hot but so what? Screechy and not in a good way.

Harriett, I’m a little worried about what bizarre thing Crystal has planned for next week. She all but promised not to use the guitar… I agree with Mike $, though. She’s the Adam Lambert of this season to me, not Siobhan–and I don’t mean in terms of style or even vocal power. Instead, you know she’s going to be good. She isn’t going to put out a bad performance, isn’t going to sing a bad note… of course, just wait until next week. She’ll probably do something horrible just to prove us wrong.

The longer this season goes on the less I like the talent. The last 2 seasons had much much better talent.
Tim – Go home, you shouldn’t be here
Page – Go home, you shouldn’t be here
Andrew – One trick pony
Aaron – Ugh
Siobhan – Has a lot of potential but she needs to stop talking.
Didi – Easy on the eyes but there’s nothing special here.
Michael – Nice voice, but his story will only carry him so far. I’m bored.
Katie – She’s a cutie, and has potential, like a young Kat McPhee, just needs more training.
Lee – Doesn’t have a ton of personality, but great voice and if he plays his cards right he can go far.
Casey – The same thing you’d hear in every corner bar in America. Not bad, just not a star.
Crystal – Gezz, can we run out of Melissa Etheridge, Alanis, and Janis songs already. She’s good but she’s expected. She should have come out and sang Miley’s Fly On The Wall or something.

For now, there is Crystal and all the rest. Let’s see how the themes roll and see if she has to do anything out of her comfort zone but so far she is a pro among amateurs. Stage presence, missing molars, I don’t care, she can belt ‘em out.
Big Mike can do the R&B thing to the hilt as well and I have to give him credit for at least singing on key. His performance was a bit blasé though and a song that begged for Percy Sledge emotion didn’t have as much soul as Michael Bolton’s cover.
I give points off for needless vocal calisthenics so even though I think Siobhan has “IT” she dropped this week for them. She could have picked any number of the thousand or so songs to choose from to display her range without having to warble and screech at the end.
Lee was safe and boring.
Casey did fine but was definitely coloring between the lines.
Didi, less than ok, good enough to tour.
Aaron. Such a nice boy.
Katie. Such a nice girl, pitchier though. Will still make the tour though.
Andrew is lucky Paige sucked so badly. Fox wants to extend this the requisite weeks but I would be ok if he left now. What I’ve seen of this guy does not deserve the tour.
I really thought Paige did well on Honky Tonk Woman. This week she showed why she shouldn’t be on the tour.

Crystal can do no wrong – love love love her. The closest thing we’ve seen since Kelly to perfection.
Hated song, but loved Casey’s performance of it.
Siobhan – been my #2 so far, but just sunk to my 4th place – if she doesn’t abandon that screamy screech at the end of every song she’ll be near my bottom fast. Has a lovely voice and proved she can sing just about anything, so why screech! I really think that’s why Adam didn’t win last year.
Lee not great but still in my top 4.
I think Katie is much better than the judges give her credit for. A lovely voice.
Hated hated hated Didi.
Michael not my cuppa tea! Been thru this with Ruben (and every other overweight black ’soul’ singer from every season), though I will say he definitely sings better than Ruben.
Aaron ok mezzi mezzi
The rest not worth remarking on. Wish we could ditch 3 (Andrew, Page, Tinm) this week and get on with the talent part of the show.

I agree with Neg. This season is not as bad and certainly no worse, than season 6. Our expectations have risen beyond some of the amateurs capabilities.
We complain when Idols with experience are around that it’s supposed to be about fresh young talent.
This group is raw and we complain that they don’t have stage presence, they’re not professional enough.
Each season had only a small group of the truly talented.
AI1…Kelly, Tamyra, Justin
AI2…Ruben, Clay, Kimberly and maybe Josh Gracin
AI3…Fantasia, Diana, JHud.
AI4…Carrie, Bo and maybe Constantine
AI5.(best year ever)Taylor, Chris, Kat, Elliot, Paris, maybe even Kellie
AI6.(worst year ever) Melinda, Jordin and I guess Blake although he never had a chance to win
AI7..David, Archie, Syesha and maybe Michael and Carly
AI8.. Adam, Danny, Kris Allison
AI9(so far) Crystal, Siobhan, Michael
