Rolling Stones theme for top 12

TheRollingStonesThis may or may not get under your thumb, but the top 12 “Idols” will be singing Rolling Stones songs next week, EW has learned.

Wikipedia lists 92 singles, 41 of which made the top 40. That makes for plenty of choices. We can surmise what would be good songs for each contestant once we know the top 12.

Have the Stones ever cleared songs for the show? I’m sure some of you have a better memory than I do on this one.

-Reminder: Katharine McPhee will be on NBC’s “Community” tonight vs. the “Idols” results show.

-Jennifer Hudson will be joining a phalanx of country stars to give a tribute to Brooks & Dunn, who are breaking up.

The Academy of Country Music announced today that Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Jennifer Hudson, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, George Strait, Taylor Swift, and Sugarland will perform at the television taping of the all-star concert special, ACM PRESENTS: BROOKS & DUNN – THE LAST RODEO on Monday, April 19, 2010 to air Sunday, May 23, 2010 at 8:00 PM ET/PT on the CBS Television Network from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The show will be produced for television by dick clark productions. Tickets are available now for the live concert event.

Thanks Rodney, I’m looking forward to next week. The Stones have enough variety that everyone should be able to find something, and I’m sure some will find something that they shouldn’t do.

I wonder if The Stones will perform on the vote off show? Only half serious with that BTW

Only 3 Idols have done the RS: Gina Glocksen did Paint it Black, and both Adam and Bo did Satisfaction. :)

It’s a good thing my DVR can record four shows at the same time. Of course, I wouldn’t bother to record ‘Community’ – but it’s a nice capability to have.

K&Cfan… dang. Remember I already picked you to be on my Trivial Pursuit team.

Even though I was semi-impressed with Todrick last night, mostly because he didn’t stink as bad as the prior weeks: I’d prefer that, instead of “Satisfaction The Musical,” Todrick would do “Get off the show because we already did the Broadway thing last year”

But JT, Todrick is so going to rock “Songs of The Wizard of Oz” week! OH wait, he already did that and got his pants sued off. never mind.

JT, heh, well, you might want to rethink that…

Rodney stumped me with a Season 1 question last night: Which Idol fell and ended up in the hospital? (No, it wasn’t Christina Christian or Jim Verraros). It was…RJ!

NEg – I too am a huge Stones fan. The problem with that is that the bad performances are going to seem even worse than usual because they will piss us off so much. Especially if one of them – todrick – completely changes a cherished song into something totally unrecognizable.

Mike S – that’s what happened with Beatles week 2 seasons ago – even the ones I was pulling for messed up some of the greatest songs ever written (believe that also happened a time or 2 this year). I kinda get tired of the judges with the “change it up” and “make it your own” stuff. A great song performed by the songwriter as it should be sung should always be respected. Don’t ‘change up’ “Hey Jude” or ‘make’ “Yesterday” ‘your own’ – just sing it from the heart and beautifully, and I’ll vote for ya.

Mike, true…but on a positive note, you know at least a couple will have MONSTER performances. I think Lee should really shine for the guys, while Smellysox and Siobhan go toe-to-toe for the gals.

I can picture Smellysox just shredding a killer version of “Fade Away” with that harp of hers, Siobhan was born to do a powerfully haunting “Gimme Shelter”, and Lee would do an awesome job with “Sympathy for The Devil”.

K&C, consider me an honorary member of the the club. Can we make a motion for not understanding why Lee pitchiest singer ever Dewyze gets so much love too?

“You try to explain this isn’t what you ordered, try to send these unappealing items back to the kitchen, but everyone — the waiter, the manager, the busboy, and the chef — insists you’re turning your nose up at a delicious meal of filet mignon, haricots verts, and creamy polenta. You think to yourself: ”Am I going crazy? Am I losing touch with my senses?”

That quote perfectly explains what I’m feeling for almost every single guy the judges rave over. I sit in my living room with my mouth wide open.. I love that writer D, that’s two times I feel exactly the way he describes it.

I agree Rx…we’re all kinda grasping at straws here. Our best guy, at least to me, Michael Lynche could MAYBE have place 4th in just about any other season. The guys are just not that good and we got excited last night because they were a little bit better than they have been before.

As long as no one does Angie I’ll be OK. Given the output of ballads so far though one of them will.

Wasn’t able to watch this week so I just watched the performances online. I can’t believe Todrick’s Somebody to Love received anything favorable from the judges, it was excruciating to me and it’s not that I think Freddy Mercury is sacrosanct or anything. Anne Hathaway did a memorable version in Enchantment that I enjoyed for its humor and her pipes.

Alex is my #1 favorite guy for now, it was Andrew, he peaked too soon. Alex just needs to gain some confidence! After making the top 12, LaKisha had her best performance and could never match that one again. I think that’s what happened to Andrew.

ummm Bad Choice, you might want to look at the demographics of AI’s television audience. Yes the contestants are young, but the show is made for TV RATINGS not for thier musical tastes. There is a reason Idol chooses the artists and themes it does, and it all has to do with who thier core viewers are and nothing at all to do with today’s top 40. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Oh and before you come back with the standard but they have be abkle to sell records canard, I suggest you read yesterday’s blog. This was all discussed ad nauseum. Album sales are but a pittance of what AI makes, it is all about advertising dollars and TV ratings.

JTesla

March 11th, 2010

Bad Choice, in addition to what was already said, there might be something wrong with your kids. Get them checked out.

Many kids that I know, and many more that I have encountered, listen to quite a bit of what is considered classic rock. They are playing it on their video games (Guitar Hero Aerosmith, Rockband Beatles), they are playing it in their music lessons, who picks up a guitar and doesn’t want to play Stairway to Heaven, and they are listening to it on their iPods and phones. They know the Rolling Stones.

We’ve had three weeks where these “kids” could choose Top 40, and we’ll have more of it later in the competition. Let’s move on to something a little different.

Mike S

March 11th, 2010
3:16 pm

JT, you just made a very salient point – “We’ve had three weeks where these “kids” could choose Top 40″.

And what did these kids choose for the most part? Songs from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Mostly folk, country or classic rock.

There is a reason they chose those songs instead of “modern top 40″.

ugaaccountant

March 11th, 2010
3:23 pm

Mike S. – Well they sort of can choose from the top 40. But far fewer current songs are on the cleared list, and the chances of AI calling up for instance Lil Wayne and asking him to clear one of his songs is awfully close to 0. There are large swathes of pop music simply off limits to the contestants.

RK

March 11th, 2010

That’s ok. Lil Wayne doesn’t make music.

One interesting theme night could be T-pain night where they go in the studio with him and do a song using auto-tune. Not saying they have to sing his songs, just use his signature auto-tune style that sells so well these days. Obviously this studio night wouldn’t be live, but frankly the show could use a few curveballs.

With the over abundance of dirges so far, there’s no way we’ll get through next week without Angie, Let’s Spend The Night Together, Wild Horses, Waiting On A Friend, etc. to be killed …um, covered, I mean, by the Top 12!

Not that I view any of those Stones’ songs as dirges, just as slow songs. And I think I’ve heard enough slow songs from this group to last the rest of the season!
