Next four axed on ‘American Idol,’ leaving 16; Kelly Clarkson on Lilith Tour
Loading ...Tough night for minority diversity on the show. Michelle Delomar, Jermaine Sellers, Haeley Vaughn and John Park were all cut. While none of those are considered big losses, there was some actual vocal skills and charisma there, just not both at one time.
First gone: Johh Park. Great first audition but he failed to take advantage of his first two performances. His first semifinal night was bad but fortunately, there were worse singers that night. John was actually decent last night but while he possesses a good voice, his stage presence and connection to the song lacked a certain something. What’s worse, going second, he was quickly forgotten.
Second down: Jermaine Sellers. I got both guys right! (And so did our collective wisdom in the poll I posted Tuesday night.) He can now spend the rest of “Idol” at home wearing his “onesy.” “In God, there is no failure. I leave here happy. I appreciate you all.” He has decent stage presence and some interesting vocal runs, but he came across as trying too hard. And he talked back to the judges. That doesn’t endear one to voters very often. Evoking God so much may not have helped either only because it seems self serving in this type of situation. He’s much more relaxed singing his song in his exit.
Third going home: Michelle Delomar. She has a decent voice but she made the cardinal sin: she sang Creed. ‘Nuf said. More seriously, she was distinctly indistinct. I feel like I’ve seen 100 of these pretty R&B singers before. Her vocals are more or less clean but not interesting at all. She was one of those that probably doesn’t generate much passion one way or another, which means a lack of votes.
Fourth gone: I was hoping Lacey Brown was worth going home but country gal Haeley Vaughn was snipped. So I got three out of four right. Haeley is really really sweet but vocally, she is clearly not ready for primetime. She sounded even worse post-elimination.
About other aspects of the results show:
- Group sing with Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.”: Now THAT felt like a theme-park performance. Some of them hammed it up – especially Michael Lynche. I’m sure Danny Gokey doesn’t miss those!
- Danny, by the way, is better groomed on the show than he was at Best Buy. The optimistic ditty “My Best Days Are Ahead Of Me” isn’t bad but isn’t likely to go No. 1. You can tell he likes pop-country, not country country. At least he isn’t trying to fake a Southern accent. And gosh, he’s chipper, isn’t he?
- Anybody miss those awful Q&As from season seven? (Or was it season six?)
Anyway, I spent so much time today reminiscing about past performances, I forgot there was some “Idol” news today. So here is is in quick summary:
-Kelly Clarkson has been added to the 2010 version of the Lilith Tour, featuring dozens of acts including Ke$sha, original Sarah McLachlan, Martina McBride, Suzanne Vega, two-thirds of the Dixie Chicks (Emily Robison and Martie Maguire’s side project Courtyard Hounds) , the Go Gos, the Bangles, Loretta Lynn, Jill Scott Corinne Bailey Rae and Erykah Badu. No dates set but it is going to stop in Atlanta. I’m there!
- Reigning Entertainer of the Year Carrie Underwood landed five ACM nominations.
-David Archuleta in the Spanish version of “We Are the World”
-Ratings yesterday were steady over Tuesday at about 23.5 million.
- L.A. Times said Scott MacIntyre will be singing “Heartstrings” next week on the March 11 results show. And Matt Giraud might join him to sing Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It,” in dueling pianos form.

well, watching last night’s gals…poor Katie. She has a MATURE voice …. meaning, not that she’s matured and is perfect or even close — but her voice is practically designed for some rich old-fashioned female singing, and they keep telling her to “be younger” she could sing mary had a little lamb and it would SOUND a bit “old” for her, imho. she’s not my favorite, but i recognize that her voice isn’t POP, it’s…. “old” …. not sure how to put it, but i can hear HER growing into some rich vocal performances, no matter what the genre the song begins in, she’s not going to please these bozos. just imho

He didn’t add enough “Gravity” to make an impression. It wasn’t a bad performance, just forgettable, as Simon said. Going second for a mediocre singer is a kiss of death at this point.
