American Idol recap, top 10 girls, with rankings

Which two will go home?

It was Crystal Bowersox tonight and everybody else.

There were some train-wreck song choices, some bold choices and one perfect choice, courtesy of Crystal.

Who will go home? Tough to know for sure. I think Lacey Brown is in major trouble. She’s quirky but less talented than, say, Siobhan Magnus. Michelle Delomar also went way off the mark with Creed and simply lacks a distinct personality. If not them, ever smiling Haeley Vaughn could be a goner (but Vote for the Worst has her on their speed dial!). Ditto with Didi Benami.

Report card on Ellen DeGeneres this week: improving, injecting more humor, showing less nervousness, still rambles a bit on occasion when critical.

Report card on Kara DioGuardi and Simon Cowell: Simon clearly misses Paula and is using Kara as his distraction. Kara is just glad to have a guy to flirt with while keeping her distance from Ellen, at least physically.

My rankings:

1- Crystal Bowersox (Creedence Clearwater Revival “Long As I Can See the Light”) – She has incredible emotional depth, tone and power in her voice. She rocked a lesser-known tune with confidence and maturity. She’s ready to go as an artist now. She’s clearly the early one to beat. As Simon said, this was similar to the Kelly Clarkson moment when she sang “Respect” season one. A pure “Wow!”

2- Katelyn Epperly (”The Scientist” Coldplay) – She slowed it down a bit too much, to the point I felt like I was in a quiet piano bar. But I really liked her for the first time. She felt the song better than many of the other singers. And she sounded good. But who is she as an artist? Hard to tell yet.

3- Siobhan Magnus (”Think” Aretha Franklin) – A bold choice, picking a tough song that Diana DeGarmo pulled off season three. Siohban lacks the fullness of Diana’s voice but she did a respectable job. That high note was in tune though a bit thin and screechy to me.

4- Katie Stevens (”Put Your Record On” Corinne Bailey Rae) – Younger sounding than last week’s song but still not contemporary feeling enough for a 17 year old. It was a wonderful karaoke performance. Indeed, she has one of the best voices in the competition. She has to pick songs more attuned to a teen.

5- Lilly Scott (Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”) – Her voice was too girly for this soulful classic. She did okay but it didn’t fit right. Another quirky female singer in the group, that’s for sure.

6- Paige Miles (Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away”) – Decent performance, though lacking the nastiness Kara and Kelly were thinking about when they wrote it. She has a great voice, for sure, and I think she’ll survive for now.

Which were the top 2?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

7 – Michelle Delomar (Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open”) – She gets points trying to change this tune up because it’s a terrible song from the get go. But melodically, she has no center. It’s all over the place.

8- Haeley Vaughn (Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb”) – Good song choice, middling execution. She has a good voice but no control over it. As Kara said, she needs time to mature and work on her instrument. If she had joined “Idol” in two years with proper training, she could have been much stronger.

9 – Didi Benami (Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me”) – A bit of a mess. A total mismatch of song to voice. But she sure is cute, isn’t she?

10 – Lacey Brown (Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me”) – Great song choice for her chipper, cutesy personality (as suggested by Kara last week) but she simply lacks the vocal heft and control to make it work.

Coveritlive.com polls ranking from most no votes to fewest no votes. Most notable is nobody here will vote for Katie Stevens (like Aaron Kelly yesterday). Only three singers got an real significant “voting” support:

Haeley 11% voting, 6% good, not voting 83% no way
Didi 18% voting, 18% good, not voting, 69% no way
Lacey 5% voting, 48% good, not voting, 48% no way
Michelle 5% voting 65% good , not voting 35% no way
Paige 8% voting, 58% good not voting, 33% no way
Katie 0% voting, 78% good, not voting, 22% no way
Crystal 82% voting 6% good, not voting 12% no way
Lilly 17% voting, 72% good, not voting, 11% no way!
Siobhan 44% voting 50% good 6% no way
Katelyn 63% voting, 38% good, not voting, 0% no way

1. Siobhan – This season just got worse, because it’s no contest anymore. Holy freakin crap just give this girl the crown. Not only can she blow, she’s eccentric, she’s a dork, and she’s hot in the weirdest way. Winner.

2. Crystal – perfect performance. Great singing, great performance. Truly heartfelt.

3. Lilly – I still love Lilly, this was a tad shaky in parts for me and I thought she did much better last week. Still, it was very good.

4-10 the rest. Either average or bad.

I think Haley and Didi should/are gone. Possibly Michele too.

Rodney, Katelyn was your #2 for the night? Really? I saw potential in that song and in her, but there were just too many mistakes for me to rank her that high. She was very middle of the pack for me overall. She looks a lot better more natural though. In fact, she might be the best looking of the girls. I love that hair!

Wow, what a difference from last night’s pain. The performances were so much better tonight it was not even close. While there were a bunch of good performances, there were two performances that stood out as this years first WOW moments. I also think those two have marked themselves as the two to beat, and the likely finalists.

1A Soibhan Magnus – Think – That note is still ringing in my brain. Just absolutely breathtaking. Not 100% perfect, but DAYUM!!!!! This was a performance that will be remembered in future seasons as the moment Soibhan said “I am here to win”

1B Crystal Bowersox – As Long as I Can See the Light – I am so glad Crystal was string enough to perform, and pray her health issues don’t cut short her season. She is by far the best performer. This was an absolutely amazing performance. I really think this season will come down to Siobhan and Crystal.

3. Katie Stevens – Put Your Records On – I loved this. I thought it was the perfect song for Katie, and where does that voice come from in a 17 year old.

4. Paige Miles – Walk Away – OK this girl has gone from WHO to WHOA. I think she has a wonderful voice, and I am firmly in her fan club.

5. Michelle Delamore – With Arms Wide Open – I really liked this, and Michelle is quickly making herself a contender. She is to me the true dark horse in this years group, she may just move up as the season goes on and sneak into the top 4 or 5 overall.

6. Lilly Scott – A Change is Gonna Come – Lilly is so unique and I love her voice, but being perfectly honest : she deserves making the top 12, but at best she may make it to 8th or 9th.

7. Katelyn Epperly – The Scientist – I thought this was beautifully sung, but it was just wayyyyy tooooo slooowwwwww. Still Katelyn has a nice voice, and she could steal a top 12 spot.

8. Didi Benami – Lean on Me – This is my biggest disappointment so far this season. I think Didi has a wonderfully unique voice, but she is just not making the impression she needs to make. Being brutally honest here, Didi needs to really worry this week.

9. Lacey Brown – Kiss me – another one that has totally underwhelmed me. Her “Wonderful World” was so absolutely haunting I thought she was going to be a shoe-in for the top 12, but after last week and this week I am firmly off her train. This was annoying, nasally and weak.

10. Healey Vaughn – The Climb – I like Healey, I really do. She is a sweet charming delightful young lady, but she sounds like a 16 year old and is just completely out of her league. Time to put her out of our misery.

Should go home: Lacey and Healey.

Will go home: Healey and ????. Lacey and Didi definitely have to worry. Katelyn is on the edge also in my opinion, and unfortunately I think the lack of exposure early on makes Paige very vulnerable too which is a shame.

Well, it was Crystal and everybody else for me. Nobody was even close to her. It was close for me between #2 through #6.

I like Haeley enough to give her a few sympathy votes just to see what she can do next week. (I know, I know, it’s Vote for the Worst mischief but at this stage, it’s kinda fun.)

Haeley is an obvious one to go, but the other, not so much. I’m going with Lacey — although a nice voice, she was boring tonight, and was boring (and bad) last week. My wife and I thought that note by Siobahn was a bit shrill — but the judges loved it, so since they were right next to her, I’ll believe ‘em.

I love that Siobhan is “a funny little thing” & then that voice pours out. Wow. High marks to her, Crystal, Katelyn & Katie. Disagree with the judges that Katie’s not showing what kind of artist she would be, I think she is. She’s not a dance-track-singing pop tart even if she is 17.

I like Didi & Lilly but wasn’t happy with either performance tonight. Seriously wrong song choices.

Michelle- Bleh. Very wimpy vocals when she should have belted.
Paige- Just don’t like her voice.
Lacey- I want to like her but she just doesn’t have enough voice.
Haeley- Please make it stop. She is so incredibly annoying. Her voice is whiny & she lisps.

Katie – Amazing depth for a kid. She’s no Miley Cyrus clone and they shouldn’t force her to be.

Siobhan – Fun. That’s good enough for me

Katelyn – That was awesome. Apologies to the judges wanting their snappy tv show, but she rocked that.

Crystal – Sympathy votes imo. She’s not as good so far as Lilly or frankly Didi. Didi is amazing when you just grab the audio.

Haeley – I mean seriously, there’s a special category of suck for butchering Miley Cyrus. How bad do you have to be to not be able to do straight forward pop/country by a teenager when you are a teenager marketing yourself as pop/country? This VFTW crap needs to stop.

I had to laugh earlier with Katie also. She couldn’t come up with a “teen”star that she liked – which should have told them something! I appreciate wanting to see youth coming from a teen, but there are old souls out there and there’s nothing wrong with stepping out of teenybopper hell.

This is the first season of watching American Idol (and I have been watching since season 1) that I cannot find one girl that I love. I love them all. They are all so talented and I cant stand to see either one of them leave. The top 12 should be all the remaining girls and michael and lee.

Siobhan is the best singer in the world right now. So just give her the crown already and tell me where I can already buy ticket to her concerts. Just like Eva Cassidy, she has that voice that stops people dead on their tracks when they hear.

Siobhan is da bomb. Blew everyone else away. Crystal… great, but it is what I expect, Lily impressed again.

Best of the night Siobhan worst of the night Randy Jackson. The dude stunk it up big time tonight, what is this a “change up the song competition?” How about changing up what you say from year to year and show to show? I don’t like the whole Kara and Simon thing. It actually reflects poorly on Kara, she needed a crutch in the audition shows always pawing at the guest judge and looking for a cohort. Now she has chosen Simon to be on her team, just do your thing Kara, stop looking to team up with someone.

There are definitely two groups of women: those that are good and those that are just horrid. Paige Miles actually impressed me for the first time in the competition and edged into the “good” group. It wasn’t better than the original, but it was better than what many of the other contestants were doing. It kept me entertained, but it’s not something I would go out of my way to listen to again. Can’t wait to read the K&Cfan reaction to it.

Katie, I still don’t get it. She just hasn’t brought anything to the competition yet. If she doesn’t turn it up she’ll make it to 7th or 8th and be put out of her misery. I just don’t get all the love. I don’t agree that she needs to sing young songs, it’s not like there is a massive age difference among the contestants. Some will do better with some styles over others simply because they like them better, if her thing isn’t teenie-pop then stop forcing it on her.

Who goes home: Lacey Brown and Randy Jackson.

Morning!

I’ll add my list to the group on this thread.

1. Crystal

2. Siobhan

3. Lilly

4, Katelyn

5. Paige

6. Didi

7. Katie

8. Michelle

9. Lacey

10. Haeley

Siobhan and Crystal are neck and neck to me…and SO different!!!

Once I got off coveritlive…I actually started listening to the singers and WATCHING them sing. It makes a BIG difference folks. While y’all were discussing the relative benefits of fast food, I heard some really good voices. The coveritlive group heard background noise. I’m seeing potential in the singers, the coveritlive group is seeing who can make the best quips. Yeah…I like the show way better than coveritlive.

I’ll agree with Mike, Siobhan wasn’t perfect last night. but the girl took a risk and it paid off. She has a great voice and that last note was amazing!

Crystal was magnificent! Her performance didn’t feel anything like a competition.

Lilly took a song that she doesn’t match in any way, shape ore form and made it an interesting piece with a different, almost sad feeling.

Both Katelyn and Paige surprised me. Good song choices and good solid performances.

Didi…I just like Didi’s style even though this was a terrible song choice and didn’t fit her.

I really liked Katie last night, too. I have no idea what the judges are hearing because she sounded good to me.

Michelle disappointed me, Lacey was not very good and Haeley was awful…again!

I only got to watch half of the show, but have to say, again, YAWN! No one really stands out with a WOW performance and voice. But some stand out in a WOW, that really sucked way! Makes you wonder how they really got to the top 24?!?! Did AI jump the shark last year with the Adam Kris showdown?

American Idol Has Hit a Brick Wall

For this season, I think the real talent stayed home. In my personal opinion, you either “have it” or you don’t. I’ve never really understood anyone who wants to sing in front of a huge audience who has no stage presence, cannot stay on pitch, is a bundle of nerves, has no confidence or has no understanding of their genre of music.

I believe the age range for Idol is 16 – 28. In all honesty, the age range should be 20 – 32. A lot of young people truly do not understand who they are musically at 16 years of age. Sometimes, it takes years of singing and performing, experimenting with different styles before a person realizes what they do best musically. And then, sometimes folks know from day one what they do best. But, these folks are usually very talented and very unique and have something to bring to the table. However, the immaturity level in these young contestants is very obvious this season. There is not one seasoned performer in the bunch. They’re not even good at faking a half-decent performance.

What is the big deal with singing “young” music, according to Randy and Ellen? I think our society has hit a wall musically. The older stuff is actually a lot better. All of the new music sounds the same, whether pop or country. Everything has the same “sound” today…….boring and un-original. Even this year’s contestants who seemed to have individuality are copies of folk singers from days gone by. This truly feels like two hours of karaoke.

Some of these young contestants may actually stand a chance if they had a few more years of singing, performing and especially training. But, right now, it’s just too soon for most of them. Their nerves, lack of confidence, silliness, immaturity and lack of stage presence will not send me to Wal-Mart to buy their latest CD. I think American Idol has hit a brick wall. Maybe this season should be their last, especially if Simon Cowell is leaving. He’s not even as funny as he used to be. The vibe is just gone…….

I have my top 4 lined up, and don’t believe it will change, since these 4 are leagues above the rest:

Crystal
Siobhan
Casey
Lee

I don’t see anyone else who could improve enough to take one of these spots away.

Good for Crystal coming back from the hospital in top-notch form. Love her (and Simon was right, reminds me of Kelly busting thru the pack all those years ago). And who knew Siobhan could go from gentle, etherial voice to a real rocker!

bored…I agree with a lot of what you said. But I’m not bored, not yet anyway. I think the Idol judges are trying to step away from the past and bring Idol into the present. Only trouble with this is that Idol’s core audience likes it the way it was. The age of Idol watchers is getting older every year and I believe that the last 2 seasons (and now this season) has been an effort to “young-up” Idol.

Morning, fellow blogsters (bloggers? blog-landers? blogites? …oh, whatever!).

I won’t do a complete ranking thing ’cause for some of them it would just be pointless. I thought Crystal, Siobhan and Paige (she’s kinda growing on me) had the best showings, with a nod to Lily, too.

“For me,” Didi has been a big disappointment. I think she’s much better than her performances have shown, but I don’t know if she can get it together in time. I agree she may be in trouble tonight.

IMO, Haeley should be going home tonight along with either Michelle or Lacey.

Also, I’m not really sure why, can’t really put my finger on it, but there’s something about Katie that I find annoying, personality-wise, and I don’t agree with the ‘tators about her talent level. She certainly hasn’t shown it so far!

Good Morning Everybody. It’s such a beautiful day out this morning.

Today’s Quote: “Meanings are not determined by situations, but we determine ourselves by the meanings we give to situations.”

Did enjoy the show last night. Right now, I’m undecisive between Crystal and Siobhan. Both were really good. 3rd for me, would be Katie. Who goes tonight, I would say Lacey, Haeley (or Michelle). I realize that it’s way to early in the season to even began to choose a winner, but I will go out on a limb and say the top two will be Crystal and Siobhan with Crystal winning.

Deirdre, I think I agree with you about chatting live during the show. I found it difficult at times last night to type, read and watch all at the same time. I felt like I lost alot of what was being sung and what the judges were saying. It’s fun to converse with the other bloggers during the show, but, I’m not sure if it’s worth it if one loses the performances by not really paying attention. That is just mho.

Happy Friday Eve, y’all!

Let’s cut to the chase, my Top 6 Girls are

Crystal – Mama Sox! The girl can sing. I just really hope her health holds up and she can stay in the competition. She should be Top 5, if not the outright winner, for me…up to now.

Katelyn – She might be my “Kris Allen” this year. I was not aware of her, but so far, I’ve really liked her voice. The piano was a cool twist in the sea of guitar players.

Didi -Yes, Rodney, she sure is purrrty. But I also love her mellow style. I just think she needs a bit more confidence…and to toughen up a bit if she really wants a career in music. (Side note: She reminds me of a blonde Olivia Wilde).

Siobhan – I better learn to spell her name right, ’cause I’ll be typing it for a while, huh? She is really different (a mohawk?!) and while I’m not totally sold on her look, I think she is extremely talented.

Paige – Tackled a Kelly song, and while that is usually a BIG no-no in my world, it earned her a spot on my Top 6. Now, clearly it wasn’t as good as the original, to me it lacked the attitude Kelly brings to it. However, I like her personality. She reminds me a bit of Kimberley Locke (my pick for Top 2 in Season 2). JT, surprised?

Katie – The cute factor. But I’m not sure that she’s it. I feel she’s missing “it” to make her a star. Maybe she should’ve waited to audition another year or two.

Yes, I still think Didi should stay over these four:

Haeley – she’s cute and bubbly, but when you can’t sing MILEY, people…Miley. I mean, come on! Where is the girl who tackled Carrie and did well?! It seems this isn’t the same girl.

Lacey – I’m so distracted by her hair, the Kool Aid Gosselin. I’ve wanted to like her, it just ain’t happening.

Michelle – Who? Oh, yeah, corporate chick. I mean, I’m sorry, but Creed? 1998 called…it wants it’s song back.

Lilly – Yeah, she’s quirky, but I’m just not feeling her…

PS. I’m loving all the Kelly compliments this season. But it almost makes it feel like it’s the farewell speech….let’s reminisce about the beginning. I am worried how a Simon-less Idol is going to do. Also, I definitely enjoyed all the conversations on coveritlive last night. Those in attendance were hilarious.

Morning, everyone.

Girls were much better last night than the week before – or the guys the night before.

I keep wanting to hear Lilly Scott sing “I’ve got a brand new pair of roller skates” by Melanie. Her voice is almost identical. And (I can’t believe I’m typing this) her version of “A Change Is Gonna Come” was far inferior to the one sang last year by “the guy that came in second to Kris Allen (you know, the guy who actually won)”

My top three – based solely on their voices not performances:

Girls:
Crystal Bowersox
Katie Stevens
Paige Miles

Guys:
Big Mike
Andrew Garcia
Lee Dewyze

So the two to beat for the women are Crystal and Siobhan (though I do like Lily, and Didi is growing on me a bit). To me, Crystal was amazing. Siobhan is fun, and I like her, and the note was great… but Crystal is way out ahead for me.

“I realize that it’s way to early in the season to even began to choose a winner”

Nana, I agree and disagree. I was thinking back to previous seasons after the way we have all been lamenting this years group, and realized that while the overall talent level is definately lower, that by this point in all the previous seasons I have watched the top tier had already become clear.

Season 1 – Honestly this was Kelly and only Kelly from early on.
Season 2 – Rueben and Clay already had seperated themselves.
season 3 – DIDN’T WATCH
Season 4 – It was already Bo and Carrie by miles.
Season 5 – Taylor and Daughtry. NObody saw the 4th place elimination coming for Chris though.
Season 6 – The only miss. At this point it was Melinda, maybe Lakisha, and a sea of mediocrity. But even as the front runner, Melinda’s style and looks were already working against her.
Season 7 – David & David from day one.
Season 8 – Adam was already out front with Danny second. Nobody saw Kris coming at all.

So, to have two singers, Siobhan and Crystal, clearly seperating themselves from the rest is not unprecedented when you look at past seasons. The problem with this season is that the group behind them is even more mediocre than the disaster that was season 6.

Is Ryan in love with the horrid autotuned Justin Bieber? That’s two weeks in a row he has mentioned him. I hate when the judges try to classify the songtestants (eh, I can come up with something better) as “young” or “old”. Look what good that did Haeley — that song is only “young” because a teenager sang it.

JTesla

K&Cfan, I’m actually not surprised. You have an ear and an eye for music so I knew you wouldn’t bash an entertaining rendition. Paige showed what can be done with a Kelly song, Todrick showed what should never be done with any song last week. Big difference.

Mike…I’m going to have to disagree with you on season 1. For me, it was only Kelly BUT……there was a HUGE outpouring of love for Tamyra Grey. Those 2 were going head to head for awhile.

And season 4 may have been Bo and Carrie by miles but not at this point in the season.

1. RxDawg’s opening comment took the words right out of my mouth: “Siobhan – Not only can she blow, she’s eccentric, she’s a dork, and she’s hot in the weirdest way.” She is hands down my favorite.

2. Mama Sox is for real. I love her pure, raw soul, and her honest look – bad teeth and all.

3. Everyone else. Katelyn was good on the piano; I disagree the version was too slow, I thought it worked.

4. Lacey’s much better song choice (thanks to Kara) helped her improve, but I hate the Bozo hair.

5. Lilly was okay but she somehow annoys me.

6. Paige: pretty good. But so what?

7. Did: absolutely beautiful, fragile girl. I’m pulling for her but she has been awful. Needs a lot more confidence.

8. Michelle: Good but so forgettable.

9. Katie: Zzzzz.

10. Haeley: Has anyone noticed her lips never come together when she talks? I never thought it possible to make a “P” or a “B” sound without the lips touching. Maybe she will finally stop smiling when she gets cut tonight

I keep waiting for Crystal to rock a Melissa Etheridge song, preferably “Somebody Bring Me Some Water.” That or a Janis Joplin song (thought that would be “too old” of a song that wouldn’t be “current” enough for the judges.)

“Also, I’m not really sure why, can’t really put my finger on it, but there’s something about Katie that I find annoying,”

Her lazy eye perhaps?

I actually like Katie a lot. I like that she apparently is not a fan of the Miley Cyrus’s and Taylor Swift’s in the music biz. That tells me she has a musical ear. Her voice is powerful and mature, especialy for a 16 year old. Her biggest problem is song selection, but that can easily be corrected. I think Katie and Paige have the most potential to grow with the big 3 (Siobhan, Crystal, and Lilly).

Rickster, I think for Crystal to do a Janis song would be too cliche’ for her. Eveyone knows she has the chops to do it, so what’s left to prove? I think she is doing really well charting her own path and choosing songs that fit her voice and her unique style. Last night she showed everyone what “making it your own” means.

I am with Harriet and RX – I don’t want to hear Crystal sing Janis, or Joanie or Carole — I want to see her take something totally different and mould it into a song that one of them would sing. We already know she is a songstress in that folk rock mode, so she does not need to copy similar artists.

As for Katie, she needs to quit listening to the judges saying “get younger’ blah blah blah… they want to turn her into the next teenie bopper robot, but Katie is not Miley, she is not Taylor, etc — Katie is a 17 yr old with a 30 yr old voice, and she needs to sing what Katie wants to sing.

Read a commentator elsewhere who suggested this: “Siobhan’s glory note was like Plushenko’s quad.” I think that’s the *perfect* comment–because for me, Siobhan was last night’s silver medalist–several flaws but wow, the note overcame almost all other contestants’ songs. Crystal’s performance, however, was the impeccably-performed “gold” program.

For once I need to side with the people saying that this season isn’t as good as the past seasons. The talent pool just doesn’t seem as deep, there seems to be a bunch of mediocre singers who get taken everywhere the wind from the judges blow them. There are few artists.

Siobhan, Crystal, and Lily. Three solid women. Katie has not lived up to the hype, and may go from pre-performance favorite to top 10 cannon fodder if she doesn’t do something soon. So far she’s the Michael Johns of Season 9.

For the men it is even worse. Lee is the only one receiving consistent praise. Andrew and Casey have struggled more than they should, but they have talent so the hope is there for them to pull it out.

Paige and one of the guys (is it Alex that is talented but shy) they are positioning themselves to be the talented but forgettable 3rd place finisher for this season.

How about the judge talent pool: Randy is back to his old shtick. I actually like Ellen’s comments, but of course no one can touch Simon. He is making the best points, even recognizing the conflicting info coming from the judges. When I disagree with him, he is able to back his point so that I understand where he is coming from. Kara, stop trying to replace Paula, we’ve been there and done that. When she is actually judging she is doing well, but then she paws at and tries to team up with Simon. Blech.

LOL. Talented but forgettable third place finisher. Great line JT, and it got me thinking: I can name Danny from last year because he is in the news, Elliot from seaosn 5 because I like him and he is in the news, and Melinda from season 6 only because I talked about her earlier today. I have already forgotten who finished behind David and David, Bo and Carrie, and Rueben and Clay.

Rickster, funny you mentioned Somebody Bring Me Some Water. Did you see Vh1 Divas? Sorry y’all, no handy youtube at work. ;) I love Melissa (it’s kind of required with the family, ha), but I’m not sure about having Crystal cover it. Clearly she’s a fan…as Melissa signed the guitar she plays.

NGTUMUN, the EW Recap? Whoever they are, they are usually funny. Haeley being a classmate from Justin on Ugly Betty? Ha!

JT, when you’re right, you’re right. I just feel like after 9 seasons it’s almost like they’ve run out of ideas. They clearly attempted to stack the deck for a girl winner. Not surprised since the biggest Idol sellers are girls. Also, notice all the Kelly mentions…it’s almost like they’re now looking for a “new” Kelly. They’ve tried molding Allison to fit that bill, imo, but post-show. Maybe now they think they might be better served doing it along the way?

Oh, and a big note on Kara: Now, I might be one of the few, if not the only one who actually likes what she has to say. However, this thing with Simon, the buddy-buddy, flirty thing…bugs me. Look, lady, you are married. If I were Kara’s husband, I would not be really happy with that. Call me old-fashion, but you respect your spouse, significant other, whatever you wanna call them.

I would recommend all young girls with Idol ambitions to invest in glass blowing classes.( Or bagpipe dittoes.) Obviously it helps you develop powerful lungs and teaches you how to control your breathing.

1. Siobhan (I can now spell her name from memory) is this season’s Adam – you don’t know what the heck she will do next, but you know it’s going to be fun, different, and awesome. She’s my number 1 girl. Maybe number 1 period. Reminds me of Fontella Bass, if anyone remembers her.

2. Glad Crystal made it from her sickbed. “Idol” whitened her teeth, and in time might give her those missing molars, She’s ready for stardom.

3. Loved Katelyn Epperly and her piano – she was NOT too slow.

4, Katie Stevens is a contralto, like Adam was a countertenor. She’ll always have problems finding the “right” Idol song, but if and when she does, both Siobhan and Crystal had better look out.

5. Lily Scott – don’t know why I like her but I do. In spite of the wretched hair.

6. Michelle Delomar – corporate singer now seems to be on par with cruiseship singer. She’s good but needs to develop a personality. What the commentators call “show who you are as an artist”.

7. Haeley Vaughn. This season’s Paris, but cuter. Still wait for her break-out performance.

8. Didi Benami – nerves, nerves.

9. Lacey Brown – hair screams “personality”, but she has none.

10. Paige Miles. Ok voice, but forgettable.

I wish Kara would stop prefacing her criticism, good or bad, with “Here’s the thing”.
And I wish the commentators would stop referring to the songtestants (!) as artists. Some of them have performed for money, but Crystal is the only one I’d call an artist – at this stage.

I have to agree with some of you who have stated that this is worst group of talent I have ever seen on Idol. What a disappointment. It is really HOHUM. I have always enjoyed Idol and make very few comments, but this is a sad day for Idol. I really think that this will be the last season, or maybe just one more, but then it will be over. I really like Crystal a lot, and Siobhan is good too. Other than that, I am totally bored with the guys and the rest of the girls.

And I loved how Kara got the name of the song Crystal did last week wrong.

And the time during the auditions she told “Cancer Guy” (sorry, but that’s the only way I remember him being referred to) “I’ll remember you” – when he made it to Hollywood last year, and she didn’t remember him.

That’s some memory Kara’s got, huh?

Mercedes, maybe Ellen smells funny from running from show to show? I mean, I don’t know…it’s just distracting and rude. If she’s that afraid of the “lesbo” cooties, why did they change the seating? Surely she would’ve raised a stink about it…privately with the producers?

Here’s what I thought, in no particular order….

Katelyn: I was blown away by her last night. The control she has over her voice is fantastic. Really beautiful performance, however slow it was.

Didi: She hasn’t been showcasing herself all that well yet, but as far as her voice goes, I love her. I hope she gets another chance to stick around. She’s capable of being really great. And she seems so sweet and genuine…that helps.

Crystal: Yep, definitely a great singer. She’s doing her own thing, which I love. Very enjoyable to watch.

Lilly: I think she’s interesing and a good singer, but everything I’ve heard from her sounds the same. Good, but the same. I’m waiting for her to do something different and really wow me.

Michelle: So generic and boring. Way too polished looking too, which bugs me for some reason. Decent voice, but nothing about her stands out.

Paige: Good singer, but something is lacking. I tune out when she sings, she just doesn’t hold my interest.

Katie: I’m not quite sure what the hype is all about. Sure, she can sing. But she tries way too hard and I feel like she’s pretending to be what she thinks a singer should be, rather than just be the singer she is. I do like her though, and I think she’ll just keep getting better and better each week.

Lacey: I want to like her, I just don’t yet. Her voice is interesting, but it just doesn’t seem to fit in with the competition.

Haeley: Poor girl. She tries hard and she means well. But wow, she’s a mess. No control over her voice. She’s got to go.

Siobhan: I don’t see what the fuss is over her, I really don’t. Yes, she can sing, yes she has a big range. But she strains so hard when she sings, it looks painful, and long term effects of that are never good. She’s very nasal and I just don’t like the tone of her voice. I know I’m the minority, but I just don’t like her. And I also feel like she thinks the competition is a joke. But I know she’ll go far in the competition. Maybe she’ll win me over.

Agreed D. Bo seemed to come out of nowhere in season four to become the second place finisher. They didnt even show his audition until it was close to the end of the season and obvious he was a strong contender. Theme nights may prove to be tough for Crystal but I think she will handle them well with her vocal range. At this point I think she is the one to beat. Time will tell. :-)

Crystal? Really? Do you guys think she is star material? It’s not just about the singing here. Its the entire package. Crystal was born 45 years too late. I know a Joplin song is coming from her. Simon was spot on when he said “the trouble with you is there are a million girls like you playing in subways right now”. Lilly has IT. Wonder why Idol is boring? There are 20 contestants, and all of them are targeting the middle of the pack. Don’t draw too much attention by being too good or too bad. At this stage of the game, most seem to think that a front runner would flame out before it’s over. To win, they must survive the cuts and hold on to make the top 10. Then, make your move.

Idol, there were a lot better singers that auditioned and were sent home. I can name a few by name both male and female. The selection process as fallen through the cracks. Let’s not blame the perfomers they are just living a dream in a fals reality. Let’s look forward to X-factor. I agree, the young songs have no flavor. Last night, the only songs that even sounded good were songs from James Brown and Sam Cook era. Time for fresh new writers. Let the young kids sing old songs…they work…

Re: Coveritlive. Thanks Rodney. I’m partial to the “new, shiny toy,” but like having two options for those who don’t feel the same. It’s allowed folks who don’t necessarily take part in the “old” format to join in the fray. Honestly, I think it will get easier once the talent starts getting whittled down, imo.

Mercedes, that’s not only immature, but sad. I mean, she works in the entertainment industry…surely she’s been around others before? It does bring an interesting sidenote to the ET interview she did with Kelly where she asked her to deny being a lesbian…In any event, I’m not going to make a big deal about it. First time blogger…so bear with me…
My favorites are (like many) Siobhan and Crystal..in that order. Following Hollywood week, that order was reversed.
What I like and don’t like about each:
Crystal: Like->her folksy voice; her relaxed and laid-back approach to her songs (she seems completely relaxed up there); she doesn’t seem in a rush, but let’s the song happen naturally.
Dislike->The similarity in style of the songs I’ve seen so far (all of which I liked). I guess I’d like to see her, as someone has already mentioned, take a well-known song and put a Crystal-twist on it. I noticed though that when the judges mentioned this to her, she said “But they won’t let us use our own songs” (that’s not an exact quote, but close). Not having watched the show, it seems she didn’t quite get what was meant, and it might do her some good to go back to previous seasons and see what Adam Lambert and David Cook (for example) were able to do with their own versions of well-known songs.
Siobhan: Like->Her big voice; her song choices so far. I like the fact that the two song choices these last two weeks were very different, and I hope she continues to mix it up from week to week. I like the fact she (like Crystal) is confident in her voice. I hope she doesn’t go with “big” songs every week. It really cracks me up that I don’t know what to expect from her each week.
Dislike->Not much at all, but she does have her really dorky moments when she’s talking.

Don’t get me wrong…I *really* like both of these girls and am thankful they’re in the competition.
