There were some train-wreck song choices, some bold choices and one perfect choice, courtesy of Crystal.
Who will go home? Tough to know for sure. I think Lacey Brown is in major trouble. She’s quirky but less talented than, say, Siobhan Magnus. Michelle Delomar also went way off the mark with Creed and simply lacks a distinct personality. If not them, ever smiling Haeley Vaughn could be a goner (but Vote for the Worst has her on their speed dial!). Ditto with Didi Benami.
Report card on Ellen DeGeneres this week: improving, injecting more humor, showing less nervousness, still rambles a bit on occasion when critical.
Report card on Kara DioGuardi and Simon Cowell: Simon clearly misses Paula and is using Kara as his distraction. Kara is just glad to have a guy to flirt with while keeping her distance from Ellen, at least physically.
My rankings:
1- Crystal Bowersox (Creedence Clearwater Revival “Long As I Can See the Light”) – She has incredible emotional depth, tone and power in her voice. She rocked a lesser-known tune with confidence and maturity. She’s ready to go as an artist now. She’s clearly the early one to beat. As Simon said, this was similar to the Kelly Clarkson moment when she sang “Respect” season one. A pure “Wow!”
2- Katelyn Epperly (”The Scientist” Coldplay) – She slowed it down a bit too much, to the point I felt like I was in a quiet piano bar. But I really liked her for the first time. She felt the song better than many of the other singers. And she sounded good. But who is she as an artist? Hard to tell yet.
3- Siobhan Magnus (”Think” Aretha Franklin) – A bold choice, picking a tough song that Diana DeGarmo pulled off season three. Siohban lacks the fullness of Diana’s voice but she did a respectable job. That high note was in tune though a bit thin and screechy to me.
4- Katie Stevens (”Put Your Record On” Corinne Bailey Rae) – Younger sounding than last week’s song but still not contemporary feeling enough for a 17 year old. It was a wonderful karaoke performance. Indeed, she has one of the best voices in the competition. She has to pick songs more attuned to a teen.
5- Lilly Scott (Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”) – Her voice was too girly for this soulful classic. She did okay but it didn’t fit right. Another quirky female singer in the group, that’s for sure.
6- Paige Miles (Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away”) – Decent performance, though lacking the nastiness Kara and Kelly were thinking about when they wrote it. She has a great voice, for sure, and I think she’ll survive for now.
7 – Michelle Delomar (Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open”) – She gets points trying to change this tune up because it’s a terrible song from the get go. But melodically, she has no center. It’s all over the place.
8- Haeley Vaughn (Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb”) – Good song choice, middling execution. She has a good voice but no control over it. As Kara said, she needs time to mature and work on her instrument. If she had joined “Idol” in two years with proper training, she could have been much stronger.
9 – Didi Benami (Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me”) – A bit of a mess. A total mismatch of song to voice. But she sure is cute, isn’t she?
10 – Lacey Brown (Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me”) – Great song choice for her chipper, cutesy personality (as suggested by Kara last week) but she simply lacks the vocal heft and control to make it work.
Coveritlive.com polls ranking from most no votes to fewest no votes. Most notable is nobody here will vote for Katie Stevens (like Aaron Kelly yesterday). Only three singers got an real significant “voting” support:
